HOW DID IT START? Ewan Clark was a prominent educator in Nova Scotia including Cape Breton, Kentville and Halifax. He and his 3 sons: Sandy, Ken and Ewan Junior sang as an a cappella quartet in local music festivals. They had been looking around for others who might like to be involved and when Art Heath, a barbershopper from Montreal, moved to Halifax that provided the spark for a chorus in Halifax. Hugh Ingraham, the public relations officer for the Barbershop Harmony Society (SPEBSQSA Inc. in Kenosha, Wisconsin) was from North Sydney and his daughter went to Acadia University in Kentville so in 1964 with the help of Jim Gillespie of Montreal the Dukes of Kent came into being. The Kentville Chapter, along with Jim Gillespie, sponsored the new Halifax chapter. Ewan Clark had been a teacher at Kings County Academy in Kentville played the organ and directed the church choir at the Church of St Paul and St Stephen. Ewan became the first Halifax director. Ken Clark was producing / directing programs at CBC Halifax (CBHT TV) at the time including the evening magazine show, “Gazette”, so had some access to that promotion tool. The radio recording studio was used as a meeting/organizational place. Frank Baldwin, a well known basketball personality, was involved with the Canadian Martyr’s Centre on Inglis Street. When he joined the chapter he was able to get the Centre gymnasium as the Monday night practice space for Atlantic Swells Chorus and The Halifax Dartmouth Chapter of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America, Inc. 1966 Halifax-Dartmouth Barbershop Chorus
