part of a broad government renewable en-ergy strategy to harvest 400MW of electric-ity from the country's vast solar resource.

He announced that Garissa which previ-ously depended on unstable thermal power is now fully connected to the national pow-er grid.

Uhuru said the government is keen on narrowing the development gap between regions of the country adding that every Kenyan is part of his administration's de-velopment agenda.

“I see that the gap that existed is being reduced. We are developing our country uniformly from Moyale to Namanga from Mombasa to Lake Victoria,” said the Presi-dent.

President Kenyatta, further announced government plans to construct water pans in the region for rain water harvesting.

During his working visit to the County, the Head of State also commissioned the Modika Barracks, Kenya’s newest army barracks and home to the Kenya Army’s 6 Brigade.

The barracks, which will be home to three army fighting units and three support sub-units, is part of a program to modernise and improve the capability of the Kenya Defence Forces.

Uhuru stated that the government will con-tinue dedicating enough resources and funds to support the Kenya Defence Forc-es to continue maintaining its status as a world class military that is ready to defend Kenya.

President Uhuru called on KDF officers to uphold their military ideals as they protect the dignity of Kenyans and the territorial in-tegrity of Kenya. He pointed out that Kenya is a nation of peace but will spare no ef-fort to defend itself against those with evil intention against the nation and its people.

Speaking at the Kenya National Exami-nation Council (KNEC) headquarters dur-ing the release of the 2018 KCSE exam results, Education CS George Magoha noted there has been an improvement in performances this year, with the number of candidates who scored A plains rising from 3,417 to 5,796 this year.

The number of candidates who scored the minimum university entry grade of C plus also rose to 125,746 this year from 90,377 last year which is 18.77% compared to last year’s percentage which was 13.77%.

The CS adviced those who failed to attain the university entry points not to despair but to continue with their education in Ter-tiary and Vocational Training (TVET) insti-tutions.

KNEC cancelled the results of over 1000 candidates, while the results of some ex-amination centres were also withheld. “We have withheld results of 658 candidates just for routine checks on small details in-cluding accuracy of their names and regis-tration detail,’’ he said.

The Islamic view of Isa lies between two extremes. The Jews, who rejected Isa (Isa) alayhi sallam as a prophet, called him an imposter, while the Christians, on the other hand, considered him to be the son of God and worship him as such. Islam considers Isa to be one of the greatest and most forbearing of prophets, in addition to Nuh (Noah), Ibrahim (Abraham), Musa (Moses) and Muhammad, peace be upon them. Isa is also considered to be the Mes-siah as well. This is in conformity with the Islamic view of the Oneness of God, the Oneness of Divine guidance, and the com-plementary role of the subsequent mission of God’s messengers. The message of God to humanity, which is to worship God and God alone and to live according to His instruction, was revealed to Adam (peace be upon him), who passed it on to his children. All the subsequent revelations to Noah, Abraham, Moses, Isa, and, finally, Muhammad are in conformity with that message. Thus, Islam views any contradictions among revealed religions as man-made elements introduced into these religions. The position of Isa in the three major creeds- Judaism, Christianity, and Islam- is not an exception.Although the Quran does not present a de-tailed life-story of Isa, it highlights the im-portant aspects of his birth, his mission, his ascension to heaven. It also passes judg-ment on the Christian and Jewish beliefs concerning him. We will look at some of the truths which God revealed about Isa in the Quran.Born of a Virgin MotherLike Christians, Muslims believe that Mary, Maria in Spanish, or Maryam as she is called in Arabic, was a chaste, virgin wom-an, who miraculously gave birth to Isa. Isa’ birth in itself was a miracle in that he had no father. God describes his birth in the Quran as follows: “And mention in the Book (the Quran), Maryam, when she withdrew in seclusion from her family to a place fac-ing east. She placed a screen (to screen herself) from them; then We sent to her a spirit from Us, (the angel Jibril), and he ap-peared before her in the form of a man in all respects. She said: ‘Verily, I seek refuge with the Most Gracious (God) from you, if you do fear God.’ (The angel) said: ‘I am only a messenger from your Lord, (to an-nounce) to you the gift of a righteous son.’ She said: ‘How can I have a son, when no man hath touched me, nor am I unchaste?’ He said: ‘So (it will be), your Lord said That is easy for Me (God): And (We wish) to ap-point him as a sign to mankind and a mercy from Us (God), and it is a matter (already) decreed (by God).’” (Quran 19:16-21)This fact, however, does not necessitate that Isa is divine in essence or spirit, nor is he worthy of worship, for Adam’s existence was more miraculous than that of Isa. If his miraculous birth were a proof that Isa was God incarnate or His son, then Adam would have more right over this divinity

than him. Rather, both are prophets who were inspired with revelation from God Al-mighty, and both were servants to Him liv-ing according to His commandments.“Indeed, the likeness of Isa with God is as the likeness of Adam. He created him of dust, then He said to him: ‘Be!’ and he was.’” (Quran 3:59)MiraclesMuslims, like Christians believe that Isa performed miracles. These miracles were performed by the will and permission of God, Who has power and control over all things.“Then will God say: ‘O Isa the son of Mary! Recount My favor to you and to your moth-er. Behold! I strengthened you with the Holy Spirit (the angel Jibril) so that you did speak to the people in childhood and in maturity. Behold! I taught you the Book and Wisdom, the Torah and the Gospel. And behold: you make out of clay, as it were, the figure of a bird, by My leave, and you breathe into it, and it becomes a bird by My leave, and you heal those born blind, and the lepers by My leave. And behold! You bring forth the dead by My leave. And behold! I did restrain the Children of Israel from (violence to you) when you did show them the Clear Signs, and the unbelievers among them said: ‘This is nothing but evi-dent magic.’” (Quran 5:110)God sent all prophets with miracles spe-cific to the nation to whom they were sent to prove the veracity of their message. These miracles were not performed of their own accord; rather, they were only manifest in their hands by God's will. The miracles performed by Isa were no differ-ent. The Jews were well advanced in the field of medicine, and the miracles which Isa brought were of this nature, proving the truth of His message and in order to con-vince the Jews. His DivinityMuslims believe in the Absolute Oneness of God, Who is a Supreme Being free of human limitations, needs and wants. He has no partners in His Divinity. He is the Creator of everything and is completely separate from His creation, and all worship is to be directed towards Him alone. This was the same message brought by all prophets of God, including Isa. He never claimed any qualities of divinity, nor did he claim that he deserved to be worshipped. He did not say that he was the “son” of God or part of the “Trinity”, but rather that he was only a servant of God sent to the Jews to bring them back to the true reli-gion, worshipping One God and following his instruction. The majority of the verses in the Quran which mention Isa discuss this aspect. They prove that he was only taken as an object of worship as a result of lies which people invented against him. It con-firms accounts of his life where Isa himself clearly denies that he deserved any wor-ship, and it supports the notion that the par-

Isa alayhi sallam in Islam

ables and examples which God has given showed his mortal nature, not his divinity or filial relationship to God. God narrates of Isa in the Quran: “They have certainly dis-believed who say, ‘God is the Messiah, the son of Mary’ while the Messiah has said, ‘O Children of Israel, worship God, my Lord and your Lord...’” (Quran 5:72)

DA'WAH

Lesson from last week Friday khutbah (sermon) delivered by Sheikh Abdirashid Ali Sufi and translated by Sheikh Badru JafarTopic: Imani Na Tabia Njema (Faith and good character)1. Allah has commanded us to always strength-en our faith towards Him.2. The one who claims that has strong faith, he/she should show it through his actions, words, and manners and how he/she interacts with oth-ers.3. For one to call himself/herself a believer, he/she should have good manners and faith all the time.4. Anyone who believes in Allah should always speak good things when talking.5. A Muslim ruler should always be very consid-erate and tolerant6. The ruler should never hesitate from accept-ing truth and righteousness 7. Allah is self-sufficient that all creatures should fully depend on.NOTE:• Faith regulates character: A person with strong faith, his/her manners will be commendable while the one with weak faith will go against the teachings of Allah and the Prophet (Peace be upon him)

God says about the belief that Isa is part of a “Trinity”: “They have certainly disbelieved who say, ‘God is the third of three.’ (Rather) there is none worthy of worship except One (God). And if they do not desist from what they are saying, there will surely afflict the disbelievers among them a painful punish-ment. So will they not repent to God and seek His forgiveness? And God is Forgiv-ing and Merciful. The Messiah (Isa), son of Mary, was no more than a Messenger be-fore whom many Messengers have passed away; and his mother adhered wholly to truthfulness, and they both ate food (as other mortals do). See how We make Our signs clear to them; and see where they are turning away!” (Quran 5:73-75)And also: “O People of the Book (Jews and Christians)! Do not exceed the limits in your religion, and attribute to God nothing except the truth. The Messiah, Isa, son of Mary, was only a Messenger of God, and His command that He conveyed unto Mary,

Maryam: The Honored Mother of Isa alayhi sallamEsteemed and loved by all Muslims and known as a pious and devout woman, Mar-yam (Mary), the mother of Isa was chosen above all other women.Islam rejects the notion that Isa is part of a trinity that is God, and denies emphatically that either Isa or his mother, Maryam, are worthy of worship. The Quran categorically states that there is no god but God. “Such is God, your Lord! None has the right to be worshipped but He, the Creator of all things. So worship Him” (Al-An`am 6:102)Muslims are required, however, to believe in and love all of the Prophets, including Prophet Isa (peace be upon him), who holds a special place in the Islamic creed. His mother, Maryam, holds a place of hon-or. As a young woman, Maryam went into the House of Prayer in Jerusalem, her en-tire life dedicated to the worship and ser-vice of God.Maryam Hears the News of IsaWhile she was in seclusion from everybody, a man appeared before Maryam. God said: “She screened herself from them; We sent to her Our Spirit, and he appeared before her in the form of a man in all respects.” (Maryamam 19:17)Maryam was afraid and tried to flee. She appealed to God saying: “Verily! I seek refuge with the Most Gracious (God) from you, if you do fear God.” The angel said: “I am only a Messenger from your Lord to you, announcing the gift of a righteous

WOMEN

son.” (Maryamam 19:18-19)Maryam was amazed and puzzled by these words. She was not married, rather a virgin who kept chaste. She asked incredulously: “O my Lord! How will I have a son when no man has touched me?’ He said, ‘So (it will be): for God creates what He wills; when He has decreed something, He says to it only ‘Be’ – and it is.” (Al ‘Imran 3:47)God created Adam from the dust of the earth, without either mother or father. He created Hawa (Eve) from Adam’s rib; and Isa, He created without a father, but with a mother, the pious Virgin Maryam. God, who has only to say ‘Be’ to a thing in order to bring it into existence, blew the spirit of Isa into Maryam via the Angel Jibril. “And We breathed into it through Our Spirit, and she testified to the truth of the Words of her Lord …” (At-Tahrim 66:12)Then, as the time came for her to give birth, Maryam decided to leave Jerusalem, and travelled towards the city of Bethlehem. Even though Maryam must have recalled the words of God, for her faith was strong and unwavering, this young woman was anxious and uneasy. But the angel Gabri-el reassured her: “O Maryam, Verily God gives you glad tidings of a word from Him, whose name will be the Messiah, Isa, the son of Maryam – held in honor in this world and the Hereafter and will be one of those who are near to God.” (Al `Imran 3:45)Isa is Born“The pains of childbirth drove her to clutch

at the trunk of a date-palm tree and she cried out in anguish: Would that I had died before this, and had been forgotten and out of sight!” (Maryamam 19:23)Maryam delivered her child right there, at the foot of the date tree. She was ex-hausted after the birth, and filled with dis-tress and fear, but nevertheless she heard a voice calling out to her.“Grieve not! Your Lord has provided you a stream of clear water under you; and shake the trunk of palm tree towards you; it will let fall fresh ripe dates upon you. So eat and drink and be glad…” (Maryamam 19:24)God provided Maryam with water, as a stream suddenly appeared beneath the place she was sitting. He also provided her with food; all she had to do was shake the trunk of the date tree.Maryam was scared and frightened; she felt so weak, having just given birth, so how could she possibly shake the immense trunk of a date tree? But God continued to provide Maryam with sustenance. The next event was indeed another mira-cle, and as human beings we learn a great lesson from this. Maryam didn’t need to shake the date tree, which would have been impossible; she only had to make an effort. As she attempted to follow God’s command, fresh ripe dates fell from the tree and God said to Maryam: “…eat, drink and be glad.” (Maryamam 19:26)Maryam now had to take her new born

It has been a week of violent protests across India over a controversial "anti-Muslim" citizenship law, which critics say violates the country's secular constitution.

The law passed last week aims to grant citizenship to "persecuted" Hindus, Par-sis, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains and Christians - and not Muslims - who arrived in India before December 31, 2014, from Bangla-desh, Pakistan or Afghanistan.

The opposition parties argue the law is dis-criminatory - even the United Nations has said so - and singles out nearly 15 percent Muslim minority among India's 1.3 billion people.

In the northeastern state of Assam, which shares borders with Bangladesh, Myanmar and China, protesters in the main city of Guwahati and other areas hit the streets fearing the new law will encourage Hindus from Bangladesh to settle in the region.

The citizenship law protests began in As-sam, where six people have died so far, four of them in police firing as mobs torched buildings and train stations.

Troops were deployed in the state and mobile internet had to be suspended in at least 10 districts. The ban has now been lifted, though the state remains tense.

In Assam, the anger over the citizenship law follows a contentious National Register of Citizens (NRC) exercise that was intend-

Weeks of protests in India against anti-Muslim citizenship law?ed to weed out undocumented immigrants mainly from Bangladesh. Nearly 2 million people were excluded from the NRC list, who now face a long and arduous legal process to prove their citizenship or be de-tained or deported.

Residents now fear the new citizenship law will provide protection to Bengali-speaking Hindus left off Assam's NRC list and leave Bengali-speaking Muslim migrants vulner-able to deportation.

The second reason why there is deep re-sentment and anger against the citizenship law, especially among Muslim students, is because the legislation is seen as part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's agenda to marginalise India's 200 million Muslims.

India's Home Minister Amit Shah has pledged to apply the NRC process na-tionwide to rid India of "infiltrators" and "termites" as a follow-up to the citizenship legislation, triggering widespread fears among Indian Muslims of being targeted and harassed by the Hindu nationalist gov-ernment.

On Sunday, in near-simultaneous attacks, police in riot gear stormed into the two cam-puses, firing tear gas shells and launching a baton charge on the protesting students. More than 100 students were wounded in the police action, some critically.

At JMI, multiple videos shot by students showed police smashing their way into the

main library and mosque as hundreds of terrified students barricaded doors and hid inside bathrooms to protect themselves.

Dozens of students were detained despite their injury and taken to police stations, triggering a major night-long demonstra-tion outside the headquarters of the Delhi police.

As soon as photos and videos shot by stu-dents under siege at JMI and AMU spread on social media, a rash of protests broke out in universities and colleges in other parts of India, including JMI. Thousands of students marched on their campuses or on the streets on Monday in solidarity with JMI and AMU students, and to uphold the secu-lar principles of the Indian constitution.

Even the end of the academic session did not deter many students as they forced the cancellation of examinations in several uni-versities and colleges, according to Indian media reports.

Solidarity protests are being organised in nearly two dozen cities across India, in-cluding New Delhi, the financial hub of Mumbai, Ahmedabad in Gujarat state and Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala.

A number of civil society organisations and individuals have also joined the protests in these cities, in what has become the big-gest political challenge for Prime Minister Modi's government since it came to power nearly six years ago.

All I Want For Christmas Is… For Muslims To Read ThisBy Muhammad ElShinawy

FEATURE

Tinselly window dressings are everywhere. It is holiday season— the only time during the year where peppermint bark comes to the local Trader Joe’s. Neighborhood win-dows glisten with ornaments on the tree. “Mama, why can’t we have a Christmas tree like theirs?” he asks. Sometimes, the youngest children ask the toughest ques-tions. Especially tough when this question was never adequately answered for us when we grappled with it as children.Let’s be honest here, for those of us grow-ing up as Muslim minorities, whether it was Christmas or another holiday, the assertive “because it’s haram (forbidden)” coupled with the parental death-stare was usually the end of the conversation. One genera-tion later, though, this answer – or the sub-conscious resentment of it – now has par-ents like me reluctant to repeat it, and for many, even questioning it.Better Late than NeverLet us first say that the “do’s and don’ts” of our faith being communicated to us su-perficially or belligerently, do not disqualify their potential correctness. In other words, withholding the reasons from us doesn’t negate that there may be very good rea-sons behind our abstention from observing Christmas as Muslims. To mention a few:1) God sent His final prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to rescue those co-erced (culturally or violently) into believing

that the Creator has partners/children that share in His Unique Perfection and Sover-eignty. It is no secret that with Christmas, the “reason behind the season” is com-memorating the day when Christ (peace be upon him), supposedly God’s son, was begotten into this world to be sacrificed on the cross for the salvation of those who ac-cept that doctrine. Given our deep love for Prophet Isa (Isa) alayhi sallam, should our children be left to conflate between casu-ally celebrating ‘the birth of God’s son’ and celebrating God liberating humanity (via re-vealing the Quran) from this claim? Therefore, should our children not grow wishing all people a happy hereafter, and therefore politely abstaining from saying “Merry Christmas”? Should our children not carry genuine concern for their friends and loved ones incurring the costliest loss? “Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills. And he who asso-ciates others with Allah has certainly gone far astray.” [an-Nisa’ 4:116]“And they say, ‘The Most Merciful has tak-en [for Himself] a son.’ You have done an atrocious thing. The heavens almost rup-ture therefrom and the earth splits open and the mountains collapse in devastation – that they attribute to the Most Merciful a son.” [Maryamam 19:88-91]2) Over the centuries, Christendom’s as-cription of divine qualities to human beings

has widened past Isa Christ to include saints as well. This is glaringly evident in the “harmless” Christmas carols, which we may not even know our children have memorized: “Santa Claus is coming to town; He sees you when you’re sleeping, He knows when you’re awake. He knows if you’ve been bad or good, So be good for goodness sake…”For a Muslim, if the super-foundation of your theology, la ilaha illa Allah, is singling God out in everything particular to Him (like being the All-Knowing, the All-Hear-ing, who hears the prayers we whisper and deserves our sincere devotion), then this is no longer an innocent song. Rather, this erodes in a child why the universe was cre-ated, why the Scriptures were revealed, why the Messengers were sent, and why Paradise and Hellfire were prepared. It rep-resents mixed messages for why a person is alive, what the priMaryam message of the Quran is, and why the worthiest blood, sweat, and tears were ever sacrificed. Our children’s pure little hearts are like sponges that soak up whatever they are exposed to, and we have been appointed as the gate-keepers of those hearts, and will be ques-tioned about that trust. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “ There is no servant whom Allah entrusts with subjects, then dies while having be-trayed that trust, except that Allah has

made Paradise forbidden for him.” [Sahih Muslim]And again, parents must inculcate in kids that being a true Muslim necessitates com-passion for humanity, and that compassion is not restricted to this life. A greater act of compassion and selflessness is tolerating the occasional backlash when identify-ing for others the harms of disbelief in this world, and the requirements for salvation in the next.3) Being comfortable with standing out, and the willingness to be different when necessary, is a hallmark of survival and of successful people. Nobody likes to identify with weakness, or be perceived with sus-picion, and hence we find Muslims more likely – at times – to leap into unhinged degrees of assimilation than others nowa-days. The desire to escape the media hos-tility against Islam is expected, but we must recognize that it also breeds an inferiority complex of sorts. Why else do Muslims, particularly where living as minorities, feel the pressing need to celebrate Christmas when many other groups don’t? Whether citing the commercialization of Christmas, or the pagan symbols of the Christmas tra-dition (think: charms on trees, bad luck to erect before a certain date), or Judaism’s rejection of Isa Christ (peace be upon him), there are plenty of people all around us who abstain from participation.

All I Want For Christmas Is...Continued From Page 7

Muslims not decorating Christmas trees is largely irrelevant to those who do— con-sidering how many groups do not without consequence. Therefore, the setting up of a Christmas tree really has to do with us as Muslims; which of us internalized the stigma and need to prove “we are just like you”, and which have escaped the identity crisis, feel privileged with Islam, and con-fident in being sufficed with the two Eids.A Charming TreeHow many have heard of this narration by the Prophet (peace be upon him)? “Abu Waqid al-Laythi reported that when the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) went out to Hunayn, he passed by a tree that the idolators called Dhat Anwat upon which they hung their weapons. The Prophet’s Companions said, “O Messen-ger of Allah, appoint for us a Dhat Anwat (good-luck tree) just as they have a Dhat Anwat.” The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Subhan Allah. This is just like Mo-ses’ people said, ‘Make for us a god like their gods.’ [al-An‘am 6:138] By the One in whose hand is my soul, you will surely follow the traditions of those before you.” [Tirmidhi: 2180; hasan-sahih]After generations of subjugation under Pharaoh, the Israelites struggled with an inferiority complex despite being liberated by God and seeing His Might firsthand at the sea. This is what prompted their urge

to imitate, along with the fact that humans commonly see the grass greener across the fence, and naturally conform to what they see as ideal. So in this age of global weakness and smear campaigns against Islam and the Muslim, the wise parent must be vigilant of similar tendencies, and understand what occasions like Christmas indicate for the Muslims in their family. Finally, a child’s desire to understand the world around them, and demand that his/her mind be respected via the infamous “but why?!” inquiries should always be vali-dated and satisfied. If we do not craft their worldview, others will fill that void. How-ever, the greatest gift you as a parent can give your child this holiday season is the confidence to be different. Is it then not urgent to instill that pride before the domi-nant culture finishes reshaping their new cultural identity?Saturate your children with enjoyable dis-cussions on tawhid (the oneness and greatness of Allah), speak to their teachers about alternatives during celebratory func-tions, supervise their screen time, make a big deal out of Islam’s Eid(s), and fill them with thrill and privilege for being chosen by Allah for Islam. And praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds.

The national government has suspended issuance of national identity cards in Man-dera County indefinitely due to corruption claims.

Areas most affected by the suspension include Khalalio, Arabia and Township in Mandera East and Elwak in Mandera South.

Speaking during the 56th Jamhuri Day cel-ebrations in Mandera town last Thursday, the area County Commissioner, Onesmus Kyatha said the exercise was infiltrated by corrupt officials and local administrators who extort money from applicants seeking the vital document.

He accused divisional vetting commit-tees of engaging in corruption and lack of patriotism adding that some of the youths seeking the vital document were forced to part between Sh2, 500 and Sh3,000 to members of the vetting committee before acquiring the waiting documents.

Kyatha said it was shocking for a gov-ernment officer to demand a bribe from students seeking a national identity card and added that stern action will be taken against government officers engaging in corruption.

“I’m really disturbed by this kind of treat-ment because when I was applying for ID during my time, I only got the school certifi-cate to prove myself,” Kyatha urged the lo-

and a spirit from Him. So believe in God and in His Messengers, and do not say: ‘God is a Trinity.’ Give up this assertion; it would be better for you. For God is indeed (the only) One God. Far be it from His glory that He should have a son. To Him belongs all that is in the heavens and in the earth. And God is sufficient for a guard-ian.” (Quran 4:171)God deems this belief as an enormity against His Essence: “And they say: ‘The Most Merciful (God) has taken (for Him-self) a son.’ Assuredly you utter a hideous thing, whereby almost the heavens are torn, and the earth is split asunder and the mountains fall in ruins; That they ascribe unto the Most Merciful a son, when it is not suitable for (the Majesty of) the Most Merciful that He should take a son. There is none in the heavens and the earth but

comes unto the Most Merciful as a slave.” (Quran 19:88-93)On the Day of Judgment, Isa again will free himself from this false attribution. God gives us a glimpse of what he will say when he is asked about why people worshipped him: “And (beware the Day) when God will say, “O Isa, Son of Mary, did you say to the people, ‘Take me and my mother as deities besides God?’” He will say, ‘Exalted are You! It was not for me to say that to which I have no right. If I had said it, You would have known it. You know what is within myself, and I do not know what is within Yourself. Indeed, it is You who is Knower of the unseen. I said not to them except what you commanded me – to worship God, my Lord and your Lord…’” (Quran 5:116-117)

Taita Muslims call for action against forced worship in schoolsThe education ministry has been urged to take decisive measures to put to an end the perennial discrimination of Muslim stu-dents on the basis of their religion in learn-ing institutions. The call was made by the Taita Taveta County led by the Council of Imams and Preachers of Kenya (CIPK) chairman Sheikh Abdulaziz Nur who called on the education cabinet secretary Prof. George Magoha to intervene and ensure that the rights of Muslim students are protected.Speaking to The Friday Bulletin, Sheikh Abdulaziz noted that forced worship and religious discrimination against Muslim students is rife in many church-sponsored secondary schools across the country and that the state should rise up to the occa-sion and put to an end the cycle of discrimi-nation to protect the fundamental rights to

freedom of religion and belief as enshrined in the country's constitution.“We have noted this with great concern and hope that the government through the education ministry will take all the neces-sary steps to ensure that Muslim students are not pushed around by teachers to go to church on Sundays, " he said while ex-pressing fears that Muslim students joining form one next year might face challenges related to practising their religious obliga-tions.Sheikh Abdulaziz said Muslim students are mandated to pray five times a day as com-manded by Allah and noted that the Educa-tion Act and the constitution are very clear on religious freedom adding that stern dis-ciplinary actions should be taken against head teachers who prevent the students to exercise their religious rights. “Compelling

the Muslim students to attend church ser-vices and observing the Christian way of worship is contrary to the constitution and contravenes the rights of Muslim students to manifest their faith as stipulated in the constitution,” Abdulaziz said.Sheikh Abdulaziz called on Members of the National Assembly to come up with laws that will punish head teachers and princi-pals who violate the religious rights of stu-dents saying the move will end religious discriminations in schools. The CIPK Chair pointed out that the re-ligious lessons were introduced in the school curriculum to nurture morally up-right students and wondered why some schools make it an office for Muslim chil-dren to practice their religious obligations.

Muslim residents in Mowlem within Dandora area in Nairobi have been urged to invest in Madrassa education to reinvigorate religious teaching in the community and to forge a “pious gen-eration”.Various speakers asked Muslim par-ents to use their investments in educa-tion of their children both at secular and madrasah institutions saying infus-ing spiritual values in the daily lives of Muslim children at early stage is of ut-most important and will help in creating spiritual awareness and inculcate good Islamic moral values for better growth of the young generation.Addressing Muslim faithful at Darul Hi-jra mosque Mowlem in Dandora area last Sunday, during prize giving day or-ganised by Darul Hijra Madrassa and Islamic center they pointed out that Madrassas serve as a vehicle for ar-ticulating Islamic cultural heritage and universal values that are deeply em-bedded in the tradition, consciousness and identity of the Muslim community.Speaking at the function, the Jamia Da’wah Officer Sheikh Muhammad Sheikh said education was a catalyst for the development of every communi-ty hence it was imperative for Muslims to priorities the education of their chil-dren to ensure the rapid development of the community. Sheikh Muhammad Sheikh who was the chief guest urged Muslim parents to embrace Madrassa education saying the only way of shaping their children into responsible citizens is by encour-aging them to work hard both at Islamic teachings and secular schools. “You have to be encouraging your children at this level before they are exposed to the world. Educate them in both secular and Islamic studies so that they will not regret when they will be in-dependent,” he said.He further advised Madrassa teach-ers to dedicate more time for Arabic language classes and return to basic grammar tests if they are to support struggling pupils stressing that the ini-tiative will promote Arabic among Mad-rassa children. In his remarks, the chairman Nai-robi branch of Council of Imams and Preachers of Kenya (CIPK) Sheikh Salim Charo told parents to channel their resources to their children’s edu-cation and not merely send the children to school without being supportive and fully engaged in their academics mat-ters.“Invest in your children’s education by paying for them fees and giving them all that they require. The knowledge they acquire today will last forever and will be beneficial tomorrow,” he im-plored the parents. He noted that learners who go through the system perform well in examina-tions and also turn out to be better and responsible citizens of the nation.

The Lapsset project should en-gage the county government through relevant departments on the land they intend to use for

This is wrong and unacceptable,” he added. He also pointed out that Garissa leaders and residents are united in supporting the project but those implementing it have not addressed land compensation. In October, the governor received officials from the Lapsset corridor project at his of-fice where he restated the need for com-pensation since Garissa land is commu-nally owned.Launched in 2012, the Sh2.4 trillion Lapsset project includes link roads from Kenya to Ethiopia, a pipeline to Kenya’s northern region, an international airport in Isiolo Town and a seaport in Lamu.

Parents have been urged to take a lead role in guiding their children with Islamic principles and morals. The call was made by Jamia Mosque Imam Sheikh Muhammad Swalihu during the second Ansaaru Sunnah Trust Islamic conference held last week at Eastleigh High school grounds. Addressing the conference, the pointed out that some parents have shied away from their parental responsibilities and are not living up to their responsibilities to provide guidance to their children. “It is becoming a common trend to find Muslim youths even girls wandering in the streets at odd hours yet their parents do not bother about their whereabouts and what there are doing,” he stated.Sheikh Swalihu stressed on parents to raise their children according to the teachings of the Quran and Sunnah of the prophet (Peace be upon him) and urged them to take a proac-tive role in inculcating good moral traits among their children as this will protect them from fall-ing into unsocial activities. On his part, the Jamia Mosque deputy Imam Sheikh Jamaldeen Osman urged the youth to live responsible lives and avoid falling into paths which are detrimental to their lives both in this life and the hereafter. Other key personalities who addressed the conference included the Qatar based Qura’n scholar and reciter Sheikh Abdulrashid Ali Sufi, Sheikh Ali Muhammad Salah from Norway and Sheikh Mustafa Ismail as well as Sheikh Mu-hammad Idris.

It would not have been possible for Maryam to explain how she had suddenly become the mother of a new born child. Since she was unmarried, her people would not be-lieve her explanations:Then Isa, son of Maryam, spoke. As a newborn baby, Isa, the Prophet of God performed his first miracle.Maryam is re-ferred to in the Quran as a siddiqah (truth-ful one): The Messiah, son of Maryam is but a messenger; messengers before him have indeed passed away; and his mother was a Siddiqah (a truthful woman); they both used to eat food. See how We make the communications clear to them, then behold, how they are turned away. (Al-Ma’idah 5:75)But the Arabic word siddiqah implies more than just speaking the truth. It means that one has achieved a very high level of right-eousness. It means that one is truthful, not only with themselves and those around them, but also with God.Maryam was a woman who fulfilled her cov-enant with God, Whom she worshiped with full submission. Water for Mwenye Mkuu Village in KwaleEvery day in rural communities throughout Kenya, millions of peo-ple suffer from a lack of access to clean, safe and reliable wa-ter. While travelling in remote hilly areas of the northern parts of this Country, One happens to occasionally come across a trail of women going up on very difficult terrains with water pitchers on their heads. Every morning and evening these women and kids travel 5Kms on steep mountain path and shrubby plains to reach the riverbeds where water is drying up. For school-aged children it's a burden that traps them in poverty. They often bear the bur-den of walking miles each day to find water in streams and ponds, full of water-borne disease that is making them and their families sick. Illness and the time lost fetching it robs entire communities of their futures. At the water source you will also notice long endless queues of eager elderly and young mothers with small children strapped on their backs waiting for the rare precious commodity- water. They travel back on steep mountains path with these heavy loads on their heads. Thus for every pitcher of water these women have to walk 10 km on these brigand infested terrains. This is part of the daily duty of women while the men attend to livestock and other outside works of the household. Without water you can't grow food, you can't build housing, you can't stay healthy, you can't stay in school and you can't keep working. Rain is a very rare commodity and hence the village folks live entirely depending on their livestock and subsistence farming as their daily livelihood. People live in great agony and pains due to non-existence of resources and other required essential ameni-ties. Due to paucity of funds/resources they cannot improve their living. They have been waiting for government interventions and attention to salvage them from this horrendous life for decades and that is hardly coming. This is the status quo in Mwenye Mkuu village in Kwale County.

Water is become a challenge to locals and the nearest they can find reliable water for their domestic use and drinking is 10 km away. This unsustainable situation of water scarcity cannot be an incentive to promote the locals unlock their potentials and create opportunities for rapid growth. Hence without water, they will con-tinue struggling to make ends meet by trekking miles to find any water source. Ummah Foundation came to learn of this sorry state and has embarked on a multi- million water project in the village that is intended to transform lives. Ummah Foundation is currently sinking a borehole in the Shimba Hills village of Mwenye Mkuu and we anticipate the project to be complete in the coming few months. With the availability of water in plenty, the villagers will access and use safe drinking water, good hygiene behaviours and sanita-tion facilities as a means of reducing diarrheal diseases in areas with recurrent emergency levels of malnutrition. Minimise crime in terms of reducing the vulnerability of women and young girls to risks of rape and burglary and assist the County government and local communities to increase their resilience to droughts and flooding caused by changing climates. It is our ardent appeal to all interested donors of good will to team up with Ummah Foundation to bring drastic changes in this pov-erty ravished areas that have been relegated to fate.
