CANADIAN JUNIOR FOOTBALL LEAGUE – PLAYERS OF THE WEEK – WEEK FIVE

Ryan Marsch – Quarterback – Winnipeg RiflesThe 3rd-year quarterback has been one of the hottest passers in the PFC in 2011. Marschthrew for a career-high 6 touchdown passes in Winnipeg’s 52-31 home win over the ReginaThunder on Sunday. Derek Dean would reel in 3 scores, Matt Lariviere 2, and Alex Vitt hadthe other touchdown catch. The 6’1, 205-pound Sturgeon Heights Collegiate grad wouldcomplete 20 of 34 passes for 425 yards. For the second straight week, Marsch would beinvolved in a contest where both he & the opposing pivot, Regina’s Wyatt Catley wouldboth throw for 400+ yards. Marsch leads the PFC in passing yards with 1094 and in thepassing efficiency ratings with a rating of 132.4.

Richard Veenstra – Defensiveback – Windsor AKO Fratmen9 total tackles, 3 INT, 2 INT for TD, 34 Total Def. Points, in 40-26 win over Ottawa SoonersRichard Veenstra, Rookie, 5'8”, 175 lbs, came off the bench to spark the AKO FratmenDefense with 3 interceptions and 9 total tackles. Richard returned two of the interceptions forTD's which ties an OFC record, and sets a new AKO record. Richard currently leads theOFC with 9 tackles, interceptions with 3, defensive points with 34, defensive touchdownswith 2, and is tied with 3 others for most points with 12. Richard will make his home debuton Saturday when AKO hosts the London Beefeaters at 7:30 pm at Alumni Field in a battleof unbeaten teams.

Quinn Van Gylswyck – Kicker – Westshore RebelsFor the second time this season Rebel kicker Quinn Van Gylswyck is the BCFCSpecial Teams Player of the Week. He would add to the Rebels scoring on Saturdayafternoon with 15 points, hitting all three field goals (17, 36 and 40 yards out), wasperfect on five converts and had a single. His kicking would pin the Broncos deep allafternoon with four punts totalling 228 yards, an average of 57 yards including abooming 75 yarder. His five kick-offs would total 313 yards, an average of 63 yards.

BCFC Week 5 SummaryBy Ryan Watters BCFC Media Coordinator

The home teams would prevail in Week 5 of the BCFC as the Raiders, Rams and Rebels all held serve as only one teamremains undefeated as the Conference hits the halfwaypoint.

In Nanaimo the final two undefeated teams would squareoff in a rematch of the 2010 Cullen Cup. It was anotherclassic game between the Okanagan Sun and VancouverIsland Raiders with the home team recording a 33-20victory to take sole possession of top spot in theConference.

The first half was an up and down battle as the Raidersscored first on their first two possessions before the Sunrattled off 17 unanswered points and led at halftime 17-14. In the second half the Raiders would outscore the Sun19-3 on route to the win.

The Raiders amassed 554 yards of total offence in a very balanced attack. The aerial assault was led by quarterback JordanYantz. He would finish 20 of 28 for 300 yards and four more touchdown passes. He would find five different receiversincluding Michael Schaper who caught a game high seven passes for 137 yards and had a major. Whitman Tomusiak hadfive catches for 72 yards and a score.

On the ground the BCFC’s leading rusher was outstanding as Jordan Botel carried 24 times for 165 yards. He would addtwo catches for 13 yards and had a touchdown. Rookie Ashton Galloway was very effective with eight carries for 61yards.

The Raiders defence was solid and would hurry the Sun offense the majority of the afternoon. They would force threeinterceptions as Adam Laurensse, Ariel Fabbro and Glenn Boyce would pick off passes. Nick Woznesensky made fivetackles and Ash Gayat had the only sack and two tackles.

The Raiders enter the bye week 5-0 and have won 40 straight games at home. Following the bye, they’ll host the 3-2Rebels.

The Sun drop to 4-1 after their first loss of the season. After trailing 14-0 after the Raiders first two possessions the Sunwould throw for the majority of the game compiling 279 yards of total offense, 249 of which was from the passing game.Jeremy Mraovic would make his second BCFC start after a week 3 injury to Bobby Davis. Mraovic had a defender in hisface for most of the game, but finished 14 of 26 for 249 yards and threw one touchdown pass and score another with hisfeet. Tommy Howes caught four balls for 49 yards, and Ben White caught three passes for 120 yards including a 92 yardtouchdown pass.

On the ground the Sun would carry 12 times, six by Mraovic for 21 yards and a one yard touchdown plunge. The other sixcarries were by Arman Bokitch for just 13 yards.

Kicker Steve McFadyen added to the scoring with two field goals, from 12 and 35 yards out.

The Sun defence forced two turnovers as Brandon Donkers had a pick and Beau Barthel jumped on a fumble. Evin Polakhad eight tackles and four assists, while Robbie Yochim and Tynan Pearce each had six tackles and one assist. JordanPfieffer had the only sack for the Sun.

The Sun will host the 0-5 Chilliwack Huskers when play resumes on Sunday September 11 at the Apple Bowl.

Also on the Island on Saturday afternoon the Westshore Rebels recorded their third win of the year and first BCFC shutoutbeating the Kamloops Broncos 47-0.

The Rebels would use the run game to and pound away at the Broncos. They would use nine different ball carriers andtallied 423 yards on the ground. Greg Morris was unstoppable with 13 carries for 259 yards and four touchdowns; hislongest being a 100 yard scamper. Andre Skinner ran four times for 35 yards and quarterback Cat Todorovich would callhis own number five times for 32 yards.

Through the air the Rebels would gain 148 yards as Todorovich would finish eight of 20 and had one TD pass. Kyle Pichwould record the major on just two catches for 45 yards. Vinnie Cannata had two catches for 49 yards.

Kicker Quinn Van Gylswyck was perfect on three kicks from 17, 36 and 40 yards out.

Defensively the Rebels would force three turnovers, highlighted by two interceptions by Dane Douglas. Chris McCormickforced a fumble and Shane Little would jump on it. Justin Perrie had three tackles, one assist and a half sack to lead theclub.

The Rebels sit in third place with a 3-2 record at the halfway point. They’ll visit the Raiders when the schedule resumesafter Labour Day.

The Broncos were frustrated gaining 187 yards of total offence. The passing game was stymied as Drew Jacobson wasseven of 19 for 81 yards. Sean Poeppel would make two catches for 49 yards and Adam Nesbitt would also make twocatches for 21 yards.

On the ground the Broncos would rush 27 times for 117 yards. Mike McMaster carried 13 times for 54 yards and JoelMukendei had four touches for 33 yards...30 of which was on one carry.

The Broncos “D” spent the majority of the game on the field, but would create five turnovers. Mitch Day had aninterception and would recover a fumble. It’s the 10th recovery in his career which places him second all time in BCFChistory. The record is 13 held by former Tri-City Bulldog Matt Begley. Defensive back Scott Nelson also intercepted apass. Drew Markortoff and Ben Hoffman recovered the other two Rebel fumbles. Clayton Ludba recorded another fourtackles while five other players had multi-tackle games.

Following the bye week the 1-4 Broncos stay on the road and visit the 2-3 Langley Rams.

The Saturday night cap saw another lopsided score as the Langley Rams recorded their first home win of the seasonbeating the Chilliwack Huskers 46-7.

The reining BCFC Offensive Player of the Week Nick Downey pick up where he left off last weekend...scoringtouchdowns. After three scores last weekend, Downey caught two balls for 110 yards and had a major. Although he hasfour offensive touchdowns in the last two games, you can never hold down a great returner forever. Downey would runback the only kick-off that came his way on Saturday night 84 yards for a major.

Quarterback Brandon Leyh was nine of 13 for 207 yards and had two touchdowns. Jerod Zaleski caught three passes for41 yards and Daniel English made three grabs for 38 yards and would score the other TD through the air.

On the ground the Rams would tally 134 yards, highlighted by Clay Ross who rushed 16 times for 101 yards and scoredtwo touchdowns.

Rookie kicker Nick Naylor would hit three field goals from 35, 40 and 43 yards out.

The defence would also get in on the scoring as Nick Felicella returned an interception 13 yards to pay dirt. Charles Scott,Joe Patko and Jeff Paras would also pick off passes in front of Rams faithful. The “D” would also record four sacks byChris Mulangu, Scott Puffer, Sheldon Vanroon and Ben Olson. Eight Rams would record multi-tackle games.

The Rams have won two in a row and are 2-3, in fourth place in the Conference and will host the 1-4 Broncos followingthe bye.

The Chilliwack Huskers suffer their fifth consecutive loss to open the season. The offense would compile just 124 yards asquarterback Adann Hendrickson finished 12 of 31 for 111 yards and a touchdown. Adam Leggott caught five passes for 53yards while Alex Sattar had two catches for 14 yards and had the lone Huskers touchdown. Hendrickson would lead theground game with 25 yards on five carries.

The Huskers special teams unit did a decent job of giving the offense their chances. Levi Weaver returned seven kick-offsfor 160 yards including a 71 yard return. He would also return two missed goals totalling 65 yards. Kicker Jayson Bateshad six punts for 123 gross yards.

The defence of the Huskers spent the majority of the game on the field and would force one turnover. Chris Schindeljumped on a fumble after Andy Goyer forced it. Brad Bomberry led the way with four tackles and an assist while WarrenJarak and Travis Mackie would pick up sacks.

The Huskers will travel to the Okanagan following the bye.

BCFC Players of the Week – Week Five

The British Columbia Football Conference is pleased to announce the ”Players of the Week” for Week Five of the 2011Season. For the first time in 2011 one team has swept all three categories...”Rebels Rule.”

Each game, teams in the BCFC like to use the run game to open up the pass game...in Westshore on Saturday afternoon,the Rebels had no reason to use the pass game. The ground assault would compile 423 yards on the day, led by theOffensive Player of the Week, running back Greg Morris. The Toronto product would total 259 yards on 13 carries andscore four touchdowns. He would add a reception for nine yards. The 18-year old would score from 100, 63, 32 and 28yards out leading the Rebels to their third win of the year. His 259 yards set a new Rebels record and is 11th best in BCFChistory.

It took until Week 5 of the schedule before the league records its shutout as the Rebels defence blanked the Broncos 47-0.The Rebels “D” was solid, but one player stood out from the others as defensive back Michael Hansen is the DefensivePlayer of the Week. Hansen compiled three solo tackles and was a ball hawk, intercepting two passes for a total of 14defensive points. Hansen is the first Rebels defender to win this award in 2011.

The BCFC enters the Labour Day bye week with the first half in the books. After the long weekend Week 6 will see allsix teams in action with the “Battle on the Island” part two features the 3-2 Rebels in Nanaimo to face the 5-0 Raiders.Also on Saturday the 1-4 Kamloops Broncos travel to Langley to visit the 2-3 Rams. Saskatoon Hilltops 26 @ Edmonton Huskies 5 @ Clarke Park

The campaign’s third week opened at Clarke Park, where the 0-2 Huskies hosted the 2-0 Hilltops.

The Toppers offense couldn’t score on their first drive of the night, but caught a break as Edmonton’s Kevin Francismuffed a punt inside his 5 yard-line. The Hilltops recovered and would score two plays later as tailback Regan Schulerscooted in from two yards out nearly two-and-a-half minutes into the period.

Huskies punter Jamie McPherson would give up a safety to make it 9-0 Saskatoon. Zack Schmidt would tack on a 24-yardfield goal to make it 12-0 after the first 15 minutes.

Kicker Jonathan Heidebrecht put the Huskies on the board on the last play of the half. The three-pointer was set up by a51-yard pass and run from pivot Ben Gorniak to Eric Schuit.

Both offenses struggled mightily at times on the night as turnovers were the story of the game. The Hilltops would commit4, but Gorniak and company would give the ball back to Saskatoon an astounding 10 times. Gorniak would toss 3interceptions as would Saskatoon pivot Chase Bradshaw. The Huskies would fumble the ball away 3 times, in addition to4 turnovers on downs.

The Huskies would pull to within a touchdown as Schmidt would give up a safety.Zach Schmidt would provide the lone Saskatoon score of the third quarter on the final play as he made a 39-yardplacement.

The Hilltops offense would get out of its funk in the fourth as Schmidt would get his third three-pointer of the night to givethe Toppers a 13-point edge. Rookie Chad Braun would take a Bradshaw pass for a 17-yard score to ice the win. Schmidtwould tack on a 71-yard punt single on the game’s last play to close out a 26-5 win.

The 3-0 Hilltops and 0-3 Huskies have byes next week.

Regina Thunder 31 @ Winnipeg Rifles 52 @ Canad Inns Stadium

When the Winnipeg Rifles and Regina Thunder go toe-to-toe, one of the teams involved usually hits the 50-point mark.That fact rang true again on Sunday afternoon, but this time it was the Rifles that hit the half-century mark as Winnipegscored a 52-31 win in front of 527 witnesses at Canad Inns Stadium.

Both teams put points on the board on their respective first drives. Brad Mikoluff put the home side up by 3 as he openedthe scoring with a 16-yard chipshot 2:27 into the game. The Thunder would jump into the lead as quarterback WyattCatley found the end zone on a 1-yard sneak. The Koot convert made it 7-3 nearly 9 minutes in. The home side quicklyregained the upper hand at 11:06 when quarterback Ryan Marsch connected with Matt Lariviere for the first of his twomajors to make it 10-7 after one frame.

After Koot made it 10-8 on a 20-yard missed field goal, Marsch & company would boost their lead as Marsch fired atouchdown toss to Derek Dean 9-and-a-half minutes in to make it a 17-8 game. Chad Okumura would pick off a Catleypass and motor 36 yards for a major 58 seconds later to up the advantage to 24-8. Regina would rally as Kolten Solomontallied a 22-yard major score to make it 24-15 after a fast paced first half.The Thunder would cut the deficit to 2 as Solomon got his second major of the day on a 36-yard pass from Catley.

The home side would go on a 21-0 run as Dean would reel in a 64-yard TD strike; Alex Vitt reeled in an 11-yard six-pointer; and Matt Lariviere hauled in a 42-yard major. The Rifles took a 45-22 lead into the final 15 minutes.

Brad Mikoluff conceded a safety 3 plays after linebacker Steven Hudey halted Catley on a third-down gamble. ReceiverBrandon Sieber made it a 45-31 game as he caught a 13-yard pass from Catley 6:06 into the period, but that was as closeas the Thunder would get. Catley went 33 of 59 for 466 yards with 3 TD’s and 3 interceptions. Derek Dean would makehis third touchdown catch of the day as Marsch would fire a seven-yard strike with 95 seconds left.

Marsch had a career day with 6 touchdown passes as he went 20 of 34 for 425 yards. Matt Lariviere had 7 grabs for 128yards. Kurt Goodrich had 4 catches on the day for 107 yards. Dean had 3 catches for 76, while Vitt had 5 catches for 99yards.

Catley would have a great afternoon as well as he completed 33 of 59 passes for 466 yards. For Catley, the 33 completionswould tie for 3rd place on the PFC & CJFL single game completion list. The 59 attempts were the 2nd most in conference& CJFL history. For the second straight week, both starting pivots threw for 400+ yards. The first time the feat was everaccomplished was last Sunday as Winnipeg battled Saskatoon.

Kolten Solomon was Catley’s go-to receiver as he had 9 catches for 138 yards. Clay Cooke had 3 receptions for 69 yards.

The offenses combined for over a thousand yards. Regina racking up 520 yards, the Rifles had 498.

Defensively, Chad Okumura had 2 interceptions, upping his season total to 3. He added 3 tackles for 16 defensive points.

The teams would combine for 29 penalties for 300 yards with Regina’s Zach Evans ejected in the second quarter for roughplay.

The Rifles head to Edmonton next Sunday to play the 0-3 Wildcats in the lone game of Week 4. The Cats were blanked30-0 in Calgary on Sunday.

Edmonton Wildcats 0 @ Calgary Colts 30 @ McMahon Stadium

The Calgary Colts looked to keep pace with the Saskatoon Hilltops who picked up their third straight win in Edmonton onSaturday night, while the Wildcats sought their first win after a demoralizing 44-10 loss in Regina.

Colts rookie kicker Marshall Broom, in the lineup for an ailing Andrew Fabian, had the first score of the opening frame ona 44-yard placement. Calgary boosted their lead as Brendon Kearl reeled in a 10-yard throw from pivot ClaytonMasikewich, who had a breakout game after a slow start to 2011 for a 10-0 lead after 15 minutes.

Broom would get his second three-pointer from 36 yards out to give the Colts a 13-point edge at the half.After Broom connected on his third field goal of the afternoon, tailback Cuong Thai Lieu would make it a 23-point lead ashe dashed 53 yards off tackle 8:40 in to the third quarter. Third-year back Chucks Okafor would wrap up the scoring 4minutes into the final period as he found the end zone from 9-yards out.

The Wildcats passing attack had its third straight miserable day as the ferocious Calgary defense held Edmonton to all of96 yards passing. Anthony Johnson completed 12 of 21 passes, but threw a pair of picks. Tailback Taylor Souster ran for70 yards on 14 gallops.

The Colts have a bye week, while the Wildcats host Winnipeg. The Rifles come into Clarke Park at 2-1 after their threetouchdown home field win against Regina.

PFC Players of the Week – Week Three

Richard Zacharias – Linebacker – Saskatoon HilltopsFor the 2nd time this season, Richard Zacharias picks up defensive honors. Zacharias racked up 20 defensive points in theHilltops’ 26-5 victory over the Edmonton Huskies on Saturday night. The 4th-year linebacker recorded 8 solo tackles andpicked off a Ben Gorniak pass in the win. The product of Hague, SK is currently 6th in PFC defensive points with 34defensive points.

Zach Schmidt – Kicker – Saskatoon HilltopsThe sophomore kicker has had a slow start to the season as he hit on one of his first three field goal attempts in theseason’s first two weeks. On Saturday night, he snapped the slump in a big way as he connected on all 3 of his field goalattempts from 24, 35 & 22 yards out. Schmidt would punt 12 times on the night, averaging 42.8 yards/punt. He added a71-yard punt single on the game’s final play. Schmidt is in a 4-way-tie for 1st in the PFC scoring race with 24 points.

Winnipeg Rifles (2-1) @ Edmonton Wildcats (0-3) Clarke Park – September 4 @ Noon

Winnipeg comes into the only contest on the Week 4 docket on a high after getting back into the win column with a 52-31home field win versus the Regina Thunder last Sunday.

The offense guided by 3rd-year quarterback and PFC Offensive Player of the Week Ryan Marsch, heads into Clarke Parkon a real roll. Marsch leads the PFC in passing yards with 1094 and in passing efficiency with a rating of 132.4. Four ofhis receivers occupy spots in the top 10. Matt Lariviere leads the conference with 279; Alex Vitt sits third with 237; DerekDean holds down fifth averaging nearly 30 yards per catch at 208 and rookie Kurt Goodrich is eighth with 153. Thefoursome have combined for 11 touchdowns at this point in the season.

Defensive Back Chad Okumura has stood out in the last two games as he’s intercepted 3 passes in that stretch, including a36-yard touchdown return against the Thunder. The sophomore Rifle is tied for the conference lead in defensive pointswith Calgary’s Stephen Dereniwski with 46.

While in Edmonton, woe are the Wildcats, as they’re off to a 0-3 start. The latest setback was a 30-0 loss to the Colts atMcMahon Stadium last Sunday.

The offense under quarterbacks Anthony Johnson & Jordan Olson, have struggled mightily this season, averaging 5 pointsper game. The two Edmonton pivots have combined for only 277 yards and thrown 4 interceptions between them. Thebright light of the Wildcats offense has been tailback Taylor Souster, who sits 5th in the conference rushing standings with194.

The defense, whose best performance was in an opening week loss to Calgary where they surrendered 7 of the 9 points inthe defeat, has been pounded on the last two weeks. Linebacker Kevin Hanson & 4th-year defensive back Kael Schryverlead the way for the Cats. Hanson occupies 5th in the defensive points standings with 37 & has one interception to go alongwith his team-leading 14 tackles. Schryver rounds out the conference top 10 with 31 points.

Winnipeg took the lone meeting of 2010 by a 33-21 score at Canad Inns Stadium on September 19th.

Eric Letourneau – Receiver – Ottawa Sooners10 rec. for 230 yards and 2 TD's, in 40-26 loss to Windsor AKO FratmenEric Letourneau, 2nd Year, 5’7” 160 lbs, picked up where he left off from last year. Eric will look to help Ottawa improve to 1-1 when the Sooners travel to St. Leonard to face the 1-0 Cougars onSaturday at 8:30 pm at Stade Hebert.

Richard Veenstra – Defensiveback – Windsor AKO Fratmen9 total tackles, 3 INT, 2 INT for TD, 34 Total Def. Points, in 40-26 win over Ottawa SoonersRichard Veenstra, Rookie, 5'8”, 175 lbs, came off the bench to spark the AKO Fratmen Defense with 3 interceptions and 9total tackles. Richard returned two of the interceptions for TD's which ties an OFC record, and sets a new AKO record.Richard currently leads the OFC with 9 tackles, interceptions with 3, defensive points with 34, defensive touchdowns with2, and is tied with 3 others for most points with 12. Richard will make his home debut on Saturday when AKO hosts theLondon Beefeaters at 7:30 pm at Alumni Field in a battle of unbeaten teams.

Brody Essery – Returner – Burlington BravesK/O Returns: 6 for 136 yds, Punt Returns: 2 for 9 yds, Off.: 4 rec. for 69 yds and 1 TD, in 27-7 loss to HamiltonHurricanesBrody Essery, 3rd Year in the OFC (2nd with Burlington), had a terrific all-around statistical performance in a losing effortat home versus the Hamilton Hurricanes. Brody leads the OFC with 136 kick-off return yards, and had 214 all-purposeyards. Brody will help lead the Braves into Hamilton on Friday night at 7:30 pm at Ivor Wynn Stadium in a rematch oftheir Week 1 contest.
