Charlotte Thompson, Director of Teacher Training, has been teaching for 27 years. She ensures all our teacher trainers are at the forefront of their profession.

Charlotte trained in the UK and spent the first ten years of her career in Japan.

She has taught all ages from kindergarten to adults, and worked in different contexts from schools to companies.

She became a teacher trainer for CELTA and Delta and has been working for IH London for 15 years.

Our Oxford teacher trainer courses take place at St Edward’s School in Summertown, a short walk from the city centre. St Edward’s is a prestigious co-educational boarding school, established in 1863. The school has modern teaching facilities, a large range of sports facilities and quality accommodation, all set within very traditional Oxford academic buildings.

Jessica Andrews completed her CELTA course at IH London in 2006 and fell in love with teaching English. She has been teaching and training for 12 years.

Jessica is CELTA and Delta qualified and is a certified Cambridge CELTA assessor.

She helped establish the first part-time CELTA course at Cultura Inglesa Recife in Brazil. She trained teachers in Peru, Brazil and China. While at IH London, Jessica delivered a variety of tailor-made specialised training courses for teachers from the Basque country and Brazil. WHO IS THE COURSE FOR?

This course is for teachers who are teaching another subject, such as geography, history or sciences, but using English to teach the subject. It is perfect for teachers who are looking for strategies and skills to better support students.

COURSE OUTLINEThe course provides teachers with an understanding of the language learning processes, as well as which teaching strategies could be used to support learners and increase student engagement. The course takes a practical approach with discussions and demonstrations of materials.

Topics include developing students’ reading and writing skills, using texts for language, and evaluating and adapting materials. Participants are asked to bring some teaching materials for their subject to use on the course. As CLIL is implemented differently around the world, it is a great opportunity to compare and contrast different experiences.

HOW IT WORKS › A self-study online Orientation Module is provided prior

to the start of your first module. This Orientation Module lasts 3 – 4 hours and has required tasks.

› Each module lasts 6 weeks. A weekly workload of 4–6 hours per week is standard.

› Modules are supervised actively by an experienced online tutor. You are required to work through each unit with your study group, and complete all tasks within the relevant week. Units are released by your tutor on a weekly basis.

COURSE OUTLINEThere are two components to the course: The Training Course (online) and The Teaching Practice Course (face-to-face). The organisation can choose to run one of the course parts or both.

The Training Course is a tutored online course for in-service teachers. It combines study materials and classroom tasks to develop practical teaching skills in the context where the teachers are working. The course materials include study notes, tasks, filmed teaching clips, interviews and tips. The tutor supports and discusses topics with the participants in forums. Assessment is through participation and assessed tasks.

The Teaching Practice Course is run face-to-face at your institution. It is a programme of observation of the teachers and feedback on their lessons. This helps the teachers to improve their skills. Assessment is through submitted lesson plans and teaching.

Zone Three Zone Three is where most commuters that work in central London live. It offers a quieter area to live in, but it is still easy to get to and from the city centre. We offer homestay with a host in this area.

Zone Four This is the farthest Zone in which we have accommodation. We occasionally place teachers in homestay in this area. It takes about 40–50 minutes to commute from this Zone. In this area, people often live in houses and not apartments, have gardens and live near parks. The Tube and buses operate in this area throughout the day and night.
