Welcome to LakesideAcademy

We would like to take a moment to welcome you to Lakeside Academy, an International Baccalaureate high school that prides itself on being an educational beacon for its surrounding communities. Located in Lachine, Quebec, Lakeside Academy serves a diverse community. Students at Lakeside are treated as individuals and all staff at the school help cultivate a culture that ensures every student’s needs are taken into account when planning ways for them to achieve success.

Lakeside Academy is always looking for new ways to innovate the education and activities it offers to students, all while keeping the students’ interests in mind. From incorporating Robotics into the curriculum to offering the opportunity for students to explore First Nations cultures, we pride ourselves on being at the forefront of new teaching and mentoring techniques to reflect our students’ wants and needs.

At Lakeside, we emphasize respect for others, self and property. In every student, we foster a responsibility for learning, being on time and following school rules. It is these qualities that will help your child learn to make responsible decisions and become positive members of society.

Our mission every day is to challenge each and every student to succeed by giving him/her the opportunity to do so in a number of different ways. There is a philosophy behind what we do that can be summed up in four words - taking pride in Lakeside. We take great pride in providing a unique educational experience for all our students.

Lakeside Academy International Baccalaureate Program

In 2009, Lakeside Academy became the first and only school of the Lester B. Pearson School Board to go whole school with the IB program. This means that all students have access to the IB philosophy and teaching style no matter what program they follow. The entire staff has worked towards full implementation of the program.

• All Enriched, FrenchImmersion, English,WOTP, Reach and Bridgestudents are taught usingthe IB framework.

• All students in the Sec 5Enriched, FrenchImmersion, English andBridge programscomplete a PersonalProject and will receivean official IB certificatefrom Cardiff.

• All students are involvedin Community andService and are expectedto complete a certainamount of volunteerhours.

The IB Middle Years Programme framework encourages students to make connections between their studies and the real world. The philosophy develops students who actively participate in their learning and they are encouraged to become more internationally minded in their thinking. This enables them to inquire about a wide range of issues and ideas that go beyond their locale to a national and global level.

1 Personal Projects

IB Personal Projects at Lakeside Academy

This range of topics and the diversity of the approaches have given rise to some truly memorable pieces such as traditional Mohawk clothing, arm knitting to raise funds for cancer research, and even a gastronomic travel guide to India.

One of the main points behind using the IB Philosphy is to promote a sense of responsibility for learning in every student, and to that end, every student is asked to create a personal project. In Secondary 5, the results from across the academic spectrum have been spectacular and students have demonstrated and continue to demonstrate expertise in a wide range of areas.

1. Personal projects are submitted in Sec. 52. Core Academic Subjects include English, French, Math, History, Science and the Arts3. CEGEP Science Pre-requisites include CST + Science Math, Chemistry, Physics and Biology

Programs Unique to Lakeside

Lakeside Academy has many unique programs in place which cater specifically to the needs of our community and population. Lakeside Academy 1 to 1 Laptop Program

Starting in 2013, Lakeside Academy launched our “1 to 1 for Everyone” Chromebook program to all students in secondary 1. The program has since expanded to include all students in secondary 1 to 4 as well as our Work Oriented Training Path programs.

The Chromebooks are controlled by the school board using mangagement software.

In the 2017-2018 school year, every grade level at Lakeside will be using a Chromebook.

Families purchase Chromebooks through Lakeside.

Lakeside takes pride in having a program that is all inclusive; we believe all students can benefit from the use of technology in the classroom.

3 Visual Arts

After I graduated Lakeside

Academy, I continued on with my studies at Dawson College, where I studied Fine Arts for two years.

After graduating CEGEP I went to Concordia University where I am currently

working towards a Bachelors of Fine Arts. Over the last 6 years, I have had the opportunity to expand my

ideas and learn new skills and techniques to better express myself artistically. I have participated in gallery shows in Montreal, and was able to work alongside my technician in the Ceramics Department. I continue to grow and I would not be where I am today without the

support from the staff at Lakeside Academy. They offered me the proper environment and tools to express myself and guided me in the right direction. I was encouraged

to explore my creativity and received help to build a portfolio of my work which was needed to apply

to CEGEP. I would have not been able to do it without their help.

- Shenice Lafortune

The visual arts option is available to students at every grade and ability level. The program enables students to hone their creativity while working on individual and group projects. Our school has produced several successful artists who have gone on to further their education in the arts. The art department has also participated in several community projects and initiatives which go with our philosophy of taking education beyond the classroom and into the community.

3 Music

In 2009, the Music Program at Lakeside Academy welcomed Joanne Blondin. With her vast experience as a musical clinician, her passion for musical education rejuvenated the program. In 2010, the All Star and Concert Bands were created. The Concert Band performs at the Quebec Musicfest every year, while the All Star Band performs at the Jazzfest des jeunes du Quebec, where they won a silver medal in 2011 and 2012.

I graduated from Lakeside Academy in 2013, and went into the

Jazz Performance program at Vanier College with Jazz Voice being my principle instrument.

When I was at Lakeside, Mme Blondin (being the miracle worker she is) gave me wonderful opportunities as a

Jazz musician. To name a few: Performing at the Montreal Jazz festival, competing in Toronto for Musicfest Canada, and

performing alongside the infamous Montreal Jubilation Gospel Choir. At Vanier, I have really been able to spread my wings musically and grow as an artist. My experience as a performer from Lakeside helped me land the audition as the Vanier College Big Band singer. Alongside superstar musician and band director, Jocelyn Couture, I have had the privilege to

compete in competitions yet again, and even perform at Place des Arts. If it weren't for Lakeside Academy and

Mme Blondin, I wouldn't be the musician, let alone person, I am today.

- Charles Lowe

In 2013, the All Star Band performed at Canada Musicfest finals after winning gold at the provincial level. They also performed at the Montreal International Jazz Festival on the Rio Tinto stage as well as in a joint Gala Concert with the Montreal Jubilation Gospel Choir under the direction of Dr. Trevor Payne, which raised funds for the music department.Lakeside's music program is now developed, recognized and highly respected in Quebec.

Drama

The drama program at Lakeside has grown exponentially over the past ten years. Drama is taught as an option course in the senior grades, but the program itself is open to students of any level. Beginning in 2007, a full length production has been staged every year in Lakeside’s beautiful, professional theatre. Any student who wishes to be part of the production, whether as an actor, member of the stage crew or in any

other aspect is welcome to do so. Over the past few years, the theatre department has become a very important part of student life at Lakeside, with approximately 80 students participating in each of the last two plays, “Hair” and “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.” Certain productions were written by students themselves, and others directed by students as their personal projects for IB certification.

Stemming from their participation in these productions, several students have gone on to enroll and graduate from the professional theatre programs at both Dawson College and John Abbott College. The drama program has also been instrumental in developing students' confidence and giving students a place to feel welcome, accepted and encouraged.

4 Robotics

Lakeside Academy has been running a successful and robotics team in the FIRST Robotics Competition since 2013. We have made good links with local industries and universities and they have provided us with expertise, access to equipment and funding.

We have been fortunate to have been awarded grants from the Cities of Lachine and Dorval, which allow us to do the following:•

Incorporate Grade 7 and 8

students into a robotics

competition where they can play

an active role.

Introduce robotics into the regular school curriculum as an option in Grade 7 rolling through into Grade 8.

• Allow us to offer ourexpertise to primaryschools who also take partin the First Lego Leaguecompetition and mentornew schools as they comeon board.

The long term aim of this project is to have Lakeside become a robotics hub for the schools within the school board, and especially for the primary schools who often have the aspiration to take part. It also fits in with the school philosophy of contributing to the larger community.

We have a committed group of staff and mentors who have put many hours into this venture, and the team remains committed to extending that opportunity to as many students as possible.

5 Sports

Lakeside Academy has a variety of

sports teams that participate in the

GMAA.

On average our school has 20 sports teams: Soccer, Touch Football, Volleyball, Cross Country, Basketball, Indoor Soccer, Swimming, Badminton, Flag Football, Track, and Rugby.

In the past years, there have been teams that have won GMAA championships in Basketball, Touch Football, and Indoor Soccer.

Lakeside is the proud recipient of many medals that have been won in a variety of sporting events. Our teachers coach every team that participates in the GMAA, which is essential to the student and teacher relationship.

Throughout the school year, there are many Staff versus Students games in various sports that are played in front of the student population. In addition, students can choose to participate daily in different sports in the school's gym during their lunch hour.

Lakeside Academy has produced several professional athletes currently playing rugby, lacrosse, football, basketball and baseball.

Brand new to Lakeside in the 2016-2017 school year is the Basketball Concentration which was introduced to Grade 7 students and is now part of Lakeside's curriculum.

Students can register in this program where they will learn and improve their basketball skills as well as get academic support from staff and compete in tournaments.

5 Leadership

&

Some activities include the Variety Show,

Halloween and Christmas Week as well as many other student organized

endeavours.

The Leadership team at Lakeside is a student-oriented program that cultivates a community within the school and

encourages school spirit. Taking pride in Lakeside

activities make great memories.

Grade 7 Camp

Grade 7 Camp is a unique event organized by Lakeside's

Leadership students. The goal of the camp is to get students to

interact and become comfortable with one another in

a fun, non-classroom environment. Students partake

in a number of team-building activities during the two-day

camp.

6

At Lakeside Academy, there is a strong belief that learning

should not be restricted to the classroom. Experiential education

helps students expand their learning experience beyond the classroom.

Extracurricular activities, school trips, and community involvement teach

students about life, generosity, hard work and being responsible - while having fun and creating memories

too!

The annual Public Speaking Competition is a proud tradition at Lakeside. The entire

student body participates in this activity. At each grade level, all English classes select

two winners who move on to the semi-final round of the competition. Five finalists are then chosen to speak in front of their peers in the auditorium. For most students, the completion of the classroom speech is an achievement in itself. However, for the truly talented and competitive speakers, winners are sometimes sent to outside

competition. This competition is sponsored by the Lakeshore - Montreal Rotay Club,

who offer a $750 scholarship.

Lakeside has a strong tradition of achievement in both its own local

science fair and at the regional level. Students in the IB Program in Grades 7 through 10 are required to

produce a project as part of their Science and Technology course. Each project must be based on

either an experiment in an area of interest or a

'design and make' approach to solve a particular problem.

Experiential Education&

Extracurricular Activties

Mohawk Community Lakeside Academy has strong ties and a history with the Mohawk Community of Kahnawake. Many families have chosen to send their children to our school because of our unique mission to promote Native Canadian culture through projects, academics and activities. Our annual Mohawk Assembly (which last year was organized by two students as their IB Personal Projects) has made Lakeside a unique and inclusive environment for Mohawk students whose cultures and identities are recognized throughout our school.

First Nations Studies

6

Among Lakeside Academy students, there is a genuine interest to learn more about First Nations culture and perspectives. During the 2016-2017 school year, Lakeside is introducing a

cross-curricular unit in Grade 7, allowing the students to explore different First Nations cultures. This implementation

will continue until all grade levels are included.

Community Service Projects Lakeside Academy prides itself on its dedication to its greater community. Both staff and students participate in a variety of service projects which help to serve the needs of the people of both Lachine and Dorval.

There are a number of community service projects currently in place at Lakeside, some of which include: • Seniors Recreational and

Support Centre ( LachineTeapot)

• Volunteer West Island• Hospitals / Foundations• Elementary School Support• Arrondissement de Lachine

7Partnerships

&Community Service

PartnershipsIn March 2016, Lakeside Academy was awarded the designation of being an official Community Learning Centre school, a philosophy which will help enhance student success and preserve the vitality of the English community through various partnerships. A number of existing partnerships are established at Lakeside and a number of new ones are on the horizon or being explored:

UbisoftAs part of Lakeside's Grade 9 Media class, students will learn coding and programming. Using what they learned, students will be working on building an educational videogame with mentors from Ubisoft who will be present at Lakeside 15 hours per week.

Thailand PartnershipLakeside is currently working with THEWPHAINGARM School in Thailand. Lakeside and the Thai school are linking curriculums so that all subjects can be taught simultaneously while following the IB framework. This will eventually lead to student and teacher exchanges beginning in September 2017.

CHAMPS Basketball Lakeside is pleased to have a partnership with CHAMPS Basketball. They offer after school worskshops as well as summer camps all centered around basketball.
