Audio, video and smart home solutions don’t just need to look good, sound amazing and

work impeccably; at Magnolia, we believe they also need to integrate perfectly into the

interior design of your home. That’s why we have System Designers. These individuals not

only help you bring the right products into your home—to deliver the ultimate entertainment

experience—they work with you to make sure it all works in tandem with your home’s look, feel

and décor. If you want your technology to stand out and be the focal point of your room, we

can do that with hand-built floorstanding speakers and giant 4K TVs. If you want it to nearly

disappear, we can do that too with architectural speakers and hidden projector screens,

all controlled by smart home solutions that put your entire home in the palm of your hand

through your smartphone or tablet rather than through dozens of remotes. We’ll even work

with your architect, interior designer or contractor to ensure your system isn’t an afterthought,

but one with your home.

Welcome to the 23rd edition of M Magazine. We invite you to peruse these pages

to discover the secrets of how Magnolia combines entertainment with style. Enjoy custom

installs where technology and design come together as one both inside and out. Read about

our visit to the Sonance headquarters where we learned how architectural speakers truly

define style and sound. We even have a story about the new Bowers & Wilkins Formation

speakers, the next evolution of wireless sound. At Magnolia Design Centers, design is not

only in our name, it’s in everything we do. See how it makes all the difference in your home

HOME THEATERS MADE EASY

There’s something special about having a home theater: gathering the family together to

watch a movie whenever you wish, inviting friends to catch the latest can’t-miss sporting

event, even playing video games on a giant screen surrounded by unbelievable audio.

There’s really nothing like it, and it’s an experience many of us have dreamed of putting in our own

homes. And while Magnolia is known for custom-building some of the finest home theaters you’ll find

anywhere, there’s now a new way, an easier way, to bring this amazing experience home. Introducing

Magnolia’s new Complete Home Theater Packages. Choose from meticulously curated theater

packages that include everything from premium components to exceptional design, engineering

and installation, in 4 easy-to-choose-from packages. It’s the simple solution to an amazing home

theater; and the best part, because we’ve been able to pre-configure these theaters, we’re offering

10% off the retail price of each package.

Everything but the popcorn

Starting with the cost-effective $15,000 Movie House package (after 10% savings), and ramping

all the way up to the ultimate home theater experience in what we call The Cinephile, we have

something for every dream and budget. But these aren’t your run-of-the-mill home theater

packages. We start with premium speakers that deliver everything from surround sound, all that way

up to an unbelievable Dolby Atmos cinema experience. Then, we added the finest components,

projectors, screens and cables at each of the theater levels to give you an unparalleled movie-going

experience. It’s everything you’d expect from a premium home theater, but that’s where we went a

step further.

What’s an amazing theater without simple-to-use control? We’ve added smart home

automation that puts not just the theater, but also your lighting, in the palm of your hand with easy

control from your smartphone or tablet. Add to that the strength of the included home networking

system and you get an incredibly strong network that ensures everything works seamlessly, without

any lags or delays. You even get acoustic panel art treatments for the top three packages, so you’re

assured to have the best sound from any room without reflection or echo. Finally, you get Magnolia

Care, which gives you exceptional after-care service, providing peace of mind after installation.

Choose one and done

A home theater seems like a big undertaking – that’s why we’ve made it incredibly easy. Choose the

package that works best for your dreams and your budget, set up a date for install, and we’ll take

care of the rest. Simply come in to your nearest Magnolia Design Center and ask about our Complete

Home Theater Packages. We’ll be happy to show you what’s possible, and how simple it is to make

it a reality in your home.

Want even more? About the only thing missing from these packages are the chairs. To

accommodate this request, we are also offering special deals on select theater seating: just

ask. Want to customize your package even further? We’ll do whatever you wish – but please

note: any changes will result in the forfeiture of the package savings discount.

At Magnolia, we’ve had the fortunate experience

of bringing extraordinary home entertainment

solutions to some extremely high-profile

individuals. From award-winning actors and gold record-

producing rock stars, to professional athletes and even

company founders and CEOs. And while these people

have a lot of charisma, talent and drive, the one thing they

lack above all else is time. They don’t have time to research

and know all about the latest tech. They don’t have time

for project delays. And they don’t have time for there to be

issues with their new systems. Getting the job right and on

time is a must, and as this installation proves, Magnolia is

more than capable.

Home improvement

When Magnolia first stepped into this stunning

home, it already had a host of good-quality TVs and

architectural speakers, but the distribution and correct

power to these components was not optimum. It was

Magnolia’s job to bring this existing system up to

speed while adding smart home solutions. Then, they

needed to work with the architects and contractors

who had just begun the construction of the cabana

and outdoor area with some next-level home

entertainment.

To create the foundation for the entire system,

Magnolia installed the Savant smart home system

A total of three 4K TVs and multiple MartinLogan Vanquish in-ceiling speakers deliver all the audio and video motivation any workout needs.

with Lutron lighting control in the main house. They

extended this control to the cabana, which is a home

in itself with a kitchen, workout room and family

room. With this area being brand new, Magnolia

was able to take the automation to another level. As

Magnolia System Designer Javier Cazares told us, “In

the cabana, you can control everything: the shades,

lighting, plus every TV and speaker.” And with a client

who doesn’t have time to figure out the complexities

of a smart home solution, the ease of the Savant

system made this an ideal choice that put the entire

space in the palm of his hand.

Hi-Profile, Hi-Tech

A cinematic delight

When you’re a well-known individual, going

out to a theater isn’t always the easiest, or most

relaxing, option. So, as Javier told us, “The

media room needed to be better than going

to the local cinema and getting a Dolby Vision

experience.”

Being a high-profile individual also meant

the homeowner didn’t have time to research

and figure out what this theater should be. So

the ball was put in Javier’s court. “The really cool

thing about this theater was that the client fully

trusted me to give him a turnkey experience

that wouldn’t be overkill, but would still give

him the jaw-dropping theater experience I

knew he wanted. I was able to be the artist of

this space and paint a theatrical canvas.”

Starting with the speakers, Javier chose a full MartinLogan

system. “With MartinLogan architectural speakers already

throughout the main house, we knew he liked that sound, so we

decided to keep it here.” Iconic MartinLogan Expression 13A

flank the screen, while a host of MartinLogan in-wall and in-ceiling

speakers finish off the Dolby Atmos 7.1.4 system. To ensure the

proper distribution of the audio in the space, Magnolia teamed

with Acoustic Innovations to acoustically treat the entire room.

This not only helped bring the sound to another level, but it also

helped hide the speakers in the space, allowing the visuals on the

screen to be the focus. Bringing that screen to life is one stunning

JVC laser projector – delivering content in groundbreaking 4K

with HDR. Then, to give the room a look that would rival any

commercial theater, Magnolia installed custom theater seating

and a starlight ceiling with shooting star feature from Acoustic

Innovations. “It’s one of the best systems I’ve ever heard,” Javier

told us. “It truly is a cinematic experience at home.”

“It’s one of the best systems I’ve ever heard, it truly is a cinematic experience at home.”

The all-star team from the Park Lane Magnolia Design Center in Dallas: Installer, Brandon Humberson; Installer, Cole

Durant; Project Manager, Jesus Cristerna; Sales Manager, Javier Cazares; Programmer, David Greenwade; Lead

Installer, Israel Campos and Lead Installer, Juan Araiza.

From the JVC laser projector and MartinLogan 7.1.4 Dolby Atmos

sound system, to the Acoustic Innovations acoustic treatments,

starry night ceiling and custom theater chairs, movie nights at home

just took on a whole new meaning.

Magnolia installed a Savant smart home system with Lutron

lighting control for automation that’s as stunning and sophisticated as the

design of this home.

Take it outside

Big, loud, clear sound is important to this client and there’s

no better space to crank it up and throw a party than this

amazing outdoor utopia. Magnolia installed the Sonance

SLS outdoor sound system to rival nearly any audio setup

you’ll hear indoors or out. The homeowner chose the

largest of the all-weather series, which delivers stadium-

sized sound to the backyard pool space. Magnolia then

added Sonance outdoor wall-mounted speakers to the

façade of the cabana to completely engulf this outdoor

space in earth-shaking sound. As Magnolia Programmer,

David Greenwade noted, “This outdoor system is the

biggest system we’ve ever done. The homeowner likes to

take the volume straight to 100%, and you can hear it from

up the block.”

Javier added, “We worked with a lot of partners to

bring this system together. From the landscape company

to members of the Sonance team who came out to help

design it. We all worked diligently to make this system as

perfect as possible.”

To finish off the space, Magnolia added several

outdoor TVs that can work in tandem with the outdoor

speakers for the ultimate game day or movie night.

A reliable solution

Whether you’re an athlete, a musician or the head of

industry, you probably travel quite a bit. When you are

home, you just want to relax. Home entertainment has

a lot to do with that relaxation—and nothing takes away

from those calming moments more than when your

system isn’t working properly.

Thankfully, Magnolia does everything they can

to ensure this is not an issue. Starting with a strong,

powerful network. As Javier told us, “You don’t want

to cut any corners when it comes to networking. That’s

why we installed a powerful Luxul router with seven

total Ruckus access points: four in the main house, one

outside and two in the cabana. They give this home an

amazingly powerful Wi-Fi network that gives the client all

the horsepower he needs now, and well into the future.”

Aftercare is also a huge part of ensuring if

anything does go wrong, it’s fixed quickly and correctly

the first time. That’s why there’s Magnolia Care. Using a

dedicated team to react to any issues with your system,

they can often fix problems remotely through your IP

server, or have a team come out to fix it in days rather

than weeks. It’s the ultimate security blanket to ensure

these very complex systems are always working at

their peak performance.

And the best part, as Javier points out, you

don’t have to be a hi-profile client to get these

services. “With everything we’ve done in this home,

it almost seems like we’re giving special treatment

to this client, but we’re not. Every customer receives

this same level of service, dedication and support.

The fact that we’re able to treat every Magnolia

customer like a hi-profile client is really what

separates us from anyone else.”

When you’re ready to take your home

entertainment experience to the next level, stop into

Magnolia and discover a level of service that will

make you feel like you’re a hi-profile client; because

when you’re working with Magnolia, you are.

Get engulfed in stunning visuals with this SunBrite all-weather TV, or go big with the GoVision screen programmed by Magnolia. Then take in earth-shaking sounds with the Sonance outdoor speaker system (on the walls and throughout the yard with the Landscape Series).

With over 50 years of acoustic expertise, Bowers & Wilkins consistently sets the benchmark

for high-performance sound. But as the audio world jumped head-first into the streaming

universe, the challenge for this iconic brand was: how do you add this 21st-century

convenience without losing the audio quality you’ve built your reputation on? The answer is Formation.

Using exclusive Formation wireless technology, Bowers & Wilkins has achieved a wireless soundstage that

rivals wired high-fidelity sound.

The difference is no difference

The Formation suite of products brings streaming audio to your entire home. Using a proprietary wireless

system you get low latency, high reliability, pure sound. Adam Ward, Vice President of Software Engineering

at Bowers & Wilkins told us, “The bar we set internally was to get in-room synchronization between two

speakers that was essentially at one microsecond. For room-to-room, our target was one millisecond.

Because much of today’s architecture has open floorplans, it was important to give customers smooth,

clean, precise audio. Both of these measurements allow us to do that. In fact, these measurements go

beyond what you need.”

This low latency is important because our ears and brain can hear small variations

in time. By creating this stable soundstage, you feel like the guitar is to your left, the

vocals are up front and the drums are back and right. Adam added, “Formation lets those

acoustic elements shine. Like with other Bowers & Wilkins speakers, we were able to create

an audio reality that is believable, allowing you to hear things you hadn’t heard before.”

Easy to set up, easy to use

One word that probably doesn’t come to mind when you think of a premium wireless

audio systems is “easy.” Until now. “One of the things we’re very proud of is the set up

experience,” Adam explained. “We focused maniacally on making the set up experience as

simple as possible. We asked ourselves, ‘Can anyone set it up within a matter of minutes?’

And we feel we’ve exceeded that goal.”

Using the system is equally simple. As Patrick Butler, National Account Manager

for Bowers & Wilkins explained, “We wanted to create a user experience that was as

seamless, simple and intuitive as possible. We wanted to make sure that however people

are currently interacting with their music, they could continue to do so with Formation. If

you’re a Spotify user, you’re going to use Spotify just like you always have. If you prefer

AirPlay or Roon or even Bluetooth, that’s how you’ll use this system.”

From there, Formation creates a mesh network. Each product in the network

dynamically chooses the optimal path to route audio data between products in order to

ensure a robust streaming experience. Formation is capable of wirelessly streaming high

resolution, 24/96 music throughout a home for a wireless audio experience that rivals

most wired experiences available today.

“We wanted to create a user experience that was as seamless, simple and intuitive as possible.”

Formation Bass is a wireless subwoofer that can pair with any speaker in the Formation suite.

Formation Audio enables high-quality wireless streaming to your current system from an existing component like a turntable.

Formation Bar is a powerful wireless soundbar that delivers legendary sound quality with wireless streaming flexibility.

Formation Wedge is designed to fit perfectly in any room, delivering 120 degrees of impeccable sound.

Formation Duo is the first wireless speaker that lives up to the exacting audiophile standards of Bowers & Wilkins with carbon-domed, tweeter-on-top technology for crystal-clear highs, and the same innovative Continuum™ cone driver found on Bowers & Wilkins industry-defining 800 Series speakers.

Performance—the ultimate goal

“The one thing that’s been missing from wireless

speakers is incredible performance,” Patrick noted.

“We’re combining over 50 years of acoustic history and an

amazing and simple user experience to create an audio

suite that’s powerful and incredible to listen to.“ When

EXPERIENCE HOME

The Greeter Stack at Home: 2 MartinLogan Impression electrostatic speakers with

Rotel 2-channel amps and a Denon AVRX3400 preamp

deliver stunning sound while the 77" Class LG G6 OLED TV

adds incredible video.

Magnolia Design Center showrooms

are designed to allow you to

experience the latest premium

audio, video and smart home solutions in a

setting that gives you a glimpse into what’s

possible in your own home. As Magnolia

System Designer Jerrad Perkins explained,

“You can come in to our showrooms—touch,

feel and experience—then take those ideas and

tailor them to fit your needs.” For the Williams

family, the experience inside the Scottsdale

Magnolia Design Center was exactly what they

were looking for.

A stack to remember

At the entrance of every Magnolia Design

Center you’ll find what we call the Greeter

Stack: a magnificent 2-channel audio system

consisting of towering MartinLogan speakers

powered by legendary McIntosh components.

“When Ryan and Shannon came in, she fell in

love with the sound and quality of that system,”

Jerrad said with a smile. “So we wanted to

replicate a similar experience in their living

room.” To do so, Jerrad and team brought

in the MartinLogan Impression electrostatic

speakers powered by Rotel amps and a Denon

preamp. “We’re really into music,” Ryan

explained. “When we crank up these

speakers it’s truly amazing. It fills the

house with really high-quality sound.”

To finish off the space, Magnolia

added a 77" Class LG OLED 4K TV.

Now incredible audio and video fill

their home for a truly remarkable

entertainment experience. Find out more about MartinLogan HERE

A theatrical transformation

After showing the couple the Greeter Stack,

Jerrad brought them into the Magnolia Family

Room Theater. This space looks just like your

average family room: couch, coffee table, TV.

Then, with the push of a button on the Control4

app, the room transforms into a theater, with

a screen that comes down and incredible

audio gear you cannot see—but definitely hear.

As Ryan told us, “The way they had it set up in

the store was a perfect fit for what we wanted

to do.”

Like seeing a design in a magazine and

thinking, ‘I want that, but have no idea how

to achieve it,’ the Williams had the luxury of

Magnolia knowing exactly how to bring this

room to life. It started by recreating the same

false-wall configuration that’s in the store’s

family room—faux fireplace and all. Teaming up

with Acoustic Geometry, Magnolia custom-built

the wall around the Williams’ existing TV and

décor, color-matching the wood to coordinate

with the existing cabinets already in the room.

This beautiful false wall not only offers an

incredible focal point in the room, but also

hides the powerful front speakers.

To enable the space to go from TV room to

movie theater, Magnolia installed a 120" Screen

Innovations screen that drops from the ceiling over

the TV as movies come to life from the Sony 4K

projector. And for sound, the exact same Bowers &

Wilkins speakers that are in the store’s Family Room

Theater were concealed within the false wall. To take the

in-store experience one step further, Magnolia then incorporated Bowers

& Wilkins in-ceiling speakers for the rear- and above-sound, creating a

Dolby Atmos 5.2.4 system with two REL subs delivering the bass.

To control this transformation, the couple chose the Control4

smart home system: the same system used in the Design Center.

Now they can manage the audio and video gear in the room, as well

as the lights.

“The way they had it set up in the store was a perfect fit for what we wanted to do.”

A truly unique experience

“Being able to give Ryan and Shannon a tour of our store

allowed them to get excited about what’s possible,”

Chelsie Kile, Magnolia Senior Regional Manager

explained. “At first, this was just going to be a large TV, but

with the Family Theater demo, it allowed them to see what

else was possible.”

And what does the family think of it? As Ryan told

us, “Our teenage boys like gaming, watching sports and

movies on the new setup. Our 3-year-old loves watching

Disney, and our 9-month-old, well, he just loves taking

naps in there.”

Whether you want exactly what Magnolia has to offer

in their showrooms, want one of the amazing installs you’ll

find in this magazine, or want something that’s completely

customized, look no further. The showroom is just the start

of your journey into what’s possible.

Seating: Octane Theater Seat Store chairs finish off the space with short recline so they can be placed nearly right up to the wall and still recline. LED lights in the cup holders and under the chairs provide a truly theatrical look.

The Audio: The front speakers are Bowers & Wilkins 7.4s, two REL subs deliver the bass, while B&W CCM Cinema 7s are used for rears and in-ceiling speakers, creating a 5.2.4 Dolby Atmos system.

The Magnolia crew: Front to back: Regional Senior Manager, Chelsie Kile; System Designer, Jerrad Perkins; Project Manager, Robby Wolfgang; Programmer, Christopher Kelly; Lead Installer, Robert Sanchez and Installer, Justin Schenk.

When Magnolia brings audio, video and automation into someone’s home, it has to look good, sound

exceptional, and it must intermingle with the home’s design and style. As for smart? In today’s

integrated, hi-tech world, that goes without saying. In this Texas home, where big and beautiful

combine with smart and sophisticated, Magnolia created a system that met every one of those needs.

Smart

Nearly five years ago, a customer at the Flower Mound Best Buy® store in Texas needed assistance with

his existing smart home system. After a short conversation, the store recognized that the best solution to a

problem of this complexity was to reach out to their nearest Magnolia Design Center. In this case that was

the Grapevine store and System Designer Derrick Smith. What seemed so small at first became so much

more. As Derrick explained, “We were able to solve the clients’ A/V problems in their previous home, which

led to three more projects that brought together an audio, video and smart home system that we felt was

perfect. The funny part was, a month later they told us they were moving. Thankfully, the success we’d had at

that house, earned us the ability to do their new home.”

With Magnolia being in on the ground floor of this remodel, Derrick and team where able to create

a smart home system that did more than just automation: it created scenes. “With the Savant smart home

system, with the push of a single button, a host of activities can happen all at once – even at predetermined

times,” Derrick told us. “For example, at 7:30 in the morning, you can have the lights come on, the window

blinds open and music set to start playing in the master bedroom, and that’s your alarm clock.”

To bring this all to life, Magnolia installed six Savant thermostats and designed lighting solutions using

Lutron HomeWorks. Then, to ensure the Wi-Fi would be strong enough to run everything smoothly, they

brought in Luxul routers and six Ruckus access points. “For a 7,600 square foot home made of brick, this Wi-

Fi system more than handles everything this family needs,” Derrick said with a smile.

Design focused

Having worked on this couple’s previous home,

Derrick and team knew the clients’ design point

of view and were able to match it in the products

they brought into the home. That started with the

sleek touchscreens as well as the elegant Savant

thermostats. But it went much further. With every TV in

the home, it was important to remove all complication

and clutter. “We were adamant about keeping a clean

look with the video,” Derrick explained. “If there’s a

TV, it’s just that screen and nothing else. You often

have many components attached to a TV, from video

sources to external speakers, but not here. Everything

that drives these screens is distributed from a single,

centralized rack. This allows every room to look clean

and inconspicuous as far as A/V is concerned. And

that was the goal: you don’t see any technology until

you press the button and it’s on.”

To match this discreet look with the audio,

Magnolia brought in the Sonance in-ceiling speaker

system that included an in-ceiling subwoofer. This

gave the sound throughout the home a rich, full sound

stage. “Sonance pays a lot of attention to matching

the design of their architectural speakers to the in-

ceiling lighting in each room,” Derrick told us. “You

hardly know the speakers are there until they’re in

use. And with eight total zones of audio, this amazing

system is hidden perfectly throughout the house.”

Awe-Inspiring

While the entire home delivers plenty of wows, the

theater and outdoor space take it to another level.

“This client knows high-end audio,” Magnolia

Lead Installer, Joel Surface told us. “To create this wow

factor in the theater was important, so we brought

in MartinLogan Motion 60XTs for the front right and

left speakers. We then added another Motion 60XT

for the center because we didn’t want the two front

end speakers to outpower the vocals. Then, we hid all

three speakers behind the screen to give it that true

cinematic vibe.”

Magnolia finished this amazing 7.2.4 system

with two more Motion 60XTs for the sides, and

MartinLogan in-walls and in-ceilings for the surround

and Dolby Atmos sound. For the requested intense

bass, Magnolia brought in an REL S5 subwoofer

to coincide with the homeowners’ existing SVS

subwoofer. While it may seem odd to have two

different subwoofer brands in a room, it actually added

to the experience. “We calibrated the sound of the two

subs to make them work perfectly together,” Derrick

explained. “The REL gives you a lot more of the highs

and the SVS gives you more of that full bass thump, so

in the end, they really compliment each other.”

To match this intense sound, Magnolia

brought in equally impressive video gear. The Sony

4K projector brings every movie to life, and with

its anamorphic lens, the family can shift the screen

view between the theatrical 2.35:1 aspect ratio and

the traditional 16:9 TV ratio when needed. In all, this

family got the sights and sounds to bring the finest

cinematic experiences home.

Then, when you step outside, the entertainment

is equally amazing. Starting with the Sonance SLS

outdoor speaker system that envelops the entire

yard and pool area with amazing sound, you always

have great audio to match the beautiful vistas that

surround this home. When it’s game time or outdoor

movie night, you have a 75" class TV that delivers a brilliant picture in this outdoor

space. Definitive Technology outdoor speakers deliver the sound for the TV while

an outdoor sub completes the system. Now, whether inside or out, incredible

audio and video are there when you want them, while seeming to disappear when

you don’t.

Home

A home is all about the family inside. To give this family exactly what they were

looking for, a Magnolia family of employees all came together to coordinate an

installation that looks, sounds and works impeccably. As Derrick mentioned, “This

was a big remodel, this looked like a commercial job site for a good two weeks,

and with the Magnolia team we had here it couldn’t have gone better. We worked

with Magnolia Engineer Robert Lodge to do the Lutron HomeWorks lighting build.

David Greenwade, the Programmer, worked to get the lighting and all the A/V to

work perfectly. With so many contractors, and the wife as the main interior designer

of the home, keeping up with the look and style was imperative, and we were able

to deliver.”

In all, Magnolia was able to give this family the home entertainment solutions

they wanted, without any of the clutter and confusion. Simple to use, beautiful to

look at, smart as a whip, this system brings utter joy to a family that knows how to

have fun.

So, you’ve got a new 4K TV and 4K components. If you want to run those components from

a rack in your basement or a closet to your TV using 4K copper HDMI cables, you may be

surprised to learn that these cables can only take a true 4K signal about 7 meters. 8K video

will require a copper cable about as thick as your thumb, and only carry that signal 2 to 3

meters. Now what?

Thankfully the optical revolution has come to video. Driven by 4K/HDR bandwidth

requirements that exceed 18Gbps, optical interconnects are replacing copper cables. Inneos

offers Real4K™ Optical Extenders which use a single strand of fiber optic cable to carry a 4K

signal as far as 1000 meters.

Real4K Optical Extenders are simple: they plug directly into your component’s HDMI

ports and carry video plus the Audio Return Channel (ARC) as well as IR or serial control

signals. They do this by taking the pristine signal directly from your source, converting it into

light waves and sending it over fiber optic cables with zero degradation of that signal. Then,

it gets converted back into a perfect signal right onto your display.

In addition to offering standard plenum-rated fiber for in-wall use, Inneos also offers

their transparent InvisiCable™ fiber which is as thin as angel hair pasta. The advantage of this

amazing cable is that it’s so thin and so transparent you don’t need to bury it in a wall; you

can simply hide it in plain sight by running it along a baseboard or in the corner between a

wall and ceiling.

In all, Inneos Real4K fiber optic products are future-proof up to 8K and offer a better

signal over longer distances. And the best part, Magnolia is using these interconnects in

many of their installations right now, so you’re getting the best – now and well into the future.

There are typically two schools of thought when it

comes to adding entertainment to a home: you

either want to show it off or have it blend in. For

this impeccable California remodel, Andy and Winnie

Kong wanted both. Thankfully, Magnolia has solutions

for making audio and video the focal point of any space,

as well as solutions to match any home’s aesthetic.

Consequently, Magnolia was able to more than satisfy

the interior designer, contractor and, most importantly,

the homeowners by combining great technology with

amazing design.

Music to your eyes

In a home where design comes before all else, there

was one room where technology was allowed to stand

out – the home’s entertainment room. Like most homes,

there wasn’t room for a dedicated theater, so Magnolia

combined a theater space with a cool and sophisticated

family room setting. It was here that homeowner Andy

Kong, a tremendous audiophile, wanted to showcase his

vintage Bowers & Wilkins 802 matrix speakers. Magnolia

System Designer Jordan Coyne told us, “Just because a

speaker is old doesn’t mean it’s bad. Speaker technology

doesn’t regress at the same rate as other technologies.

As long as you take care of them, you can keep a pair

of classic speakers for a long time.” So, Magnolia had

the foundation of a surround system, adding a Bowers

and Wilkins center, subwoofer and rear surrounds to

complete this incredible 5.1 system.

HOME THEATERS MADE EASYProofed 1.22.19

For video, Magnolia installed a 75" Class Sony

4K TV for when it’s casual TV watching time, then

added a 137.5" Stewart Cinemascope Firehawk

screen and Sony 4K projector for when it’s serious

movie watching time. And because the screen rolls up

and disappears into the ceiling when not in use, they

wanted the projector to disappear as well. To achieve

this, Magnolia installed a custom Stewart projector port

with optical grade glass into the back wall, allowing

the projector to be hidden in the adjacent room and

still deliver a magnificent picture to the screen.

The rack itself is a sight to behold as well, so

the Kongs chose to show it off in an alcove next to

their kitchen. Here, all the components that power the

audio and video gear throughout the house are on

display, with McIntosh components as the focal point.

This rack was designed by Magnolia’s engineering

department in Minnesota. There, professional

engineers not only built and tested the rack, but

also designed the blueprint for where all the wiring

and technology needed to go in the home, creating

a professional system that not only looks good, but

performs impeccably.

The rack and the entertainment room are the

only two places in the home where technology takes

center stage. As Jordan noted, “We wanted to respect

the space where it needed to be respected, then

complement the design of the room with something

more modern like the Bowers & Wilkins Diamond

Series where needed.”

Smart design, smart home

While the family room/home theater room intertwine

function and style, the Kongs wanted the rest of the

home to integrate the technology without any visual

interference. That started with the architectural

speakers throughout the home. At Magnolia, when

it comes to sound and design, it’s essential to match

a speaker’s aesthetic to the home’s aesthetic. Jordan

noted, “We chose Sonance Architectural Series

speakers because of their design focus. We even

went so far as to flush-mount the kitchen and dining

room speakers to match the flush-mounted in-ceiling

lighting.” It’s this attention to every detail that allows

the home’s design to be the focus, not the home

entertainment gear.

Another big part of this project was creating a

simple-to-use, smart home solution that could control

every aspect of their home. To achieve this, Jordan

took the couple through the Magnolia Design Center

showroom, letting them experience both the Control4

and Savant smart home systems. In the end, they

chose Savant, as they felt it best matched their needs

and the style of their home.

A major component of this smart home solution

was the lighting. Lutron lighting solutions were

chosen to control both the natural and electric light.

Automated drapery tracks control both their sheer

and blackout blinds, while the rest of the rooms have

automated Lutron shades. To coincide with these

window treatments, Lutron also controls their electric

light – allowing them to create scenes with the Savant

system for bringing their home to life in the mornings

or putting it all to sleep at night, plus any other special

scenes they might want to create.

They also have a discrete but substantial

surveillance system, with 9 cameras located

throughout the home, inside and out, plus a Savant

door station that allows them to talk to guests at the

door while seeing them through the Savant app on

their smartphone or tablet.

From the Savant door station to the nine surveillance cameras that can be tiled on any TV in the house, Magnolia brought peace of mind to this home.

“We chose Sonance Architectural Series speakers because of their focus on design.”

To finish off the connection between design and technology, Magnolia installed

the Lutron Grafik T light switches. These are special lighting faceplates that are modern,

clean and allow for easy dimming of each light. To keep this aesthetic consistent, the

Kongs also chose the Lutron outlet receptacle faceplates. Jordan noted, “There was a

high level of detail in every aspect of this home – and we needed to match that. We

wanted to respect the design of the house, so it was integrating technology without

disrupting the space.”

Bring it all together

“Design was important to us,” Winnie told us. So, it was important for Magnolia to

match that design and implement technology flawlessly. With the convenience of

Savant, the perfect integration of Lutron lighting and window blinds, and the designer-

focused solutions of the Sonance audio system, Magnolia was able to let the design

of the home stand out, while enhancing it with technology – rather than detracting

from it. Even when you step outside, this “hear but don’t see” theme continues. Using

the Sonance SLS outdoor speaker system, the Kongs get incredible outdoor audio

that surrounds their yard from speakers that nearly disappear because they’re hidden

within the foliage. (Editor’s note: usually when you photograph a richly designed space

you try to avoid or remove speakers and technology to enhance the look of a room. For

this space, we went to great lengths to call attention to it, as it was often so well hidden.)

And when it came time to show off the technology, Magnolia was there as well,

not only integrating classic gear, but bringing the latest in audio and video to life in a

non-intrusive way.

When you’re ready for the latest home entertainment gear that enhances the

design of your home, or even disappears altogether, look no further than your nearest

Thirty-five years ago, Scott Struthers and Geoff Spencer

punched a hole in a wall and put in its place a speaker.

It was the beginning of a journey to create architectural

audio solutions that combine unsurpassed performance with

minimal visual intrusion. No longer were speakers big boxes

taking up space in your home, Sonance had intersected sound

and design in a wholly unique way. From in-wall, in-ceiling,

theater and outdoor solutions, to speakers that literally

disappear in your home, design comes first at Sonance, with a

sound that is second to none.

Hidden but heard

“Your sound should look like it belongs and blends with your

home,” Jason Sloan, Chief Sales Officer at Sonance, told us. “Your

space comes first – speakers should blend in to the design.” So

Sonance has created solutions to integrate sound seamlessly

into any room. Their in-ceiling speakers are designed to match

the shape and size of your ceilings lighting. If you have round

in-ceiling lighting, the speakers should also be round; square

lighting, square speakers. The size of the speakers should also

match up with the size of your lighting – everything, according to

Sonance, should line up and look intentional.

HOME THEATERS MADE EASYProofed 1.22.19

The pinnacle of this idea comes in the aptly

named Invisible Series. These speakers are installed

into your ceiling or wall and then finished over just

like you would finish over drywall. The speakers

deliver ambient music that emanates throughout

the room with no visual footprint. This is ideal in

areas where you want to make your artwork the

focal point, or, say you have a $100,000 chandelier—

no matter how much you want music in that space,

you want to see the chandelier, not the speaker. It’s

this laser focus on design that separates Sonance

from any other architectural speaker brand.

Even, balanced sound

Sonance believes that the fundamental principles

behind good lighting also apply to audio. The best

way to achieve balanced coverage is to use several

small speakers that deliver

even volume throughout

your room. Most speakers

are like a spotlight: they

give you big sound in a

small area; while a Sonance

audio solution is more like

in-ceiling lighting: many

smaller speakers give you

even sound throughout.

Jason told us, “Music should

be comfortable, it needs to match the environment

and the situation.” So, while you might want big

sound in a small space with a two-channel speaker

system, for whole-home audio you want even sound

that remains at a constant volume no matter where

you move throughout your home. Sonance then took

this idea even further – adding bass ports to their

in-ceiling speaker systems. As Senior Vice President

of Sonance, Mike Sonntag told us, “The only way to

get good sound from the smallest speakers is to also

give good bass. We create a system where you get

immersive sound throughout your home no matter

the size or shape of our speakers.”

This motto is constant throughout all of

the products Sonance offers, even their outdoor

speaker series. Here, a spectrum of smaller satellite

speakers surround your yard from the outside,

pushing the sound in, with bass ports providing

Elephant CooperationSonance is committed to more than just great

design and sound—they’re committed

to the environment, education and people

in need through the Sonance Foundation. Working both locally

and internationally, they have a keen eye on the

community, both at home and abroad. And

while Sonance has spent 35 years working to

make audio disappear, one thing they’re trying

hard to not let disappear is elephants. This is of particular interest to

Sonance founder Scott Struthers who took his first trip to Africa at age

15 and was in awe of the incredible wildlife. When he returned years later, when his own daughter

turned 15, he recalls wondering, “Where did all the elephants go?” The Elephant

Cooperation was formed and is dedicated to

preserving the African elephants, which, without

assistance, could be extinct by 2027. As the

foundation states, it truly is now or never for these

beautiful creatures.

the low end. The idea behind these is to not only

provide well-distributed, even sound throughout

your yard, but the speakers are designed to

disappear into your landscape when hidden within

your yard’s foliage.

A common goal, an uncommon relationship

When you walk into the Sonance headquarters, there

is definitely a unique vibe. It’s open, free spirited and

fun. But there’s a very serious vibe about what they are

doing and how they are attempting to achieve it. A

big part of this space is an area exclusively designed

to teach people about their products: how they work,

what makes them different, and of course, how they

sound. It’s in this environment that Sonance has

invited hundreds of Magnolia employees to learn

about design and audio in what they call Masters

Training. As Mike explained,

“We’re not an audio

company, we’re a design

company.” So, when you

learn about Sonance, you

don’t learn about how their

speakers work from a sound

perspective, you learn how

to incorporate them into

people’s homes from a

design perspective. From

theater speakers and soundbars to the amazing

Invisible Series, Magnolia employees learn how to

speak differently to customers about audio. When

customers answer the question, “How do you want

your audio to look?” with, “I don’t want to see it at

all,” Sonance is that solution. It’s this training facility

that helps Magnolia employees make that solution

a reality.

While this training facility isn’t exclusive to

Magnolia employees, one room that only Magnolia

employees can experience is the family room.

Here, Sonance gives a demonstration of a Magnolia

exclusive product, the MAG6R 5.1 surround sound

system. This is perhaps the easiest way to bring 5.1

architectural surround sound into your home, and

once you hear it, you’re sold. It’s unique partnerships

like this that makes Magnolia the place to go for these

exceptional products. One other aspect that makes

Inside Sonance Headquarters:Beyond an office building, much of this space is dedicated to training. this relationship so important is Sonance also allows

Magnolia employees to bring in interested clients to

these speakers in a dedicated environment that truly

brings them to life. From the Reference Series theater

speakers to the incredible Outdoor Landscape

Ideally, when talking about Sonance speakers,

AL FRESCO

While some might put an addition on their home to gain

the added space they desire, one Arizona family had a

different idea. As the homeowner told us, “We wanted

to extend our livable space. We wanted more space to entertain, but

we didn’t need a bigger home. We had this wonderful outdoor area

waiting for a makeover.” So, as this blank canvas slowly filled with a pool,

a sport court, a firepit and a putting green, just one thing was missing:

the perfect soundtrack to fill this outdoor paradise.

A sound solution

With Camelback Mountain overlooking their yard, Mother Nature had the views

taken care of. Now it was up to Magnolia to integrate the audio to complete this

amazing outdoor space. “We were looking for a sound system where you could

live and play in comfort and that integrated seamlessly into the landscape we had

created,” the homeowner explained.

To deliver on this request, Magnolia installed the MartinLogan Outdoor

Living™ Series of speakers and subwoofers. This system is not only incredibly

discreet in its style, but it surrounds the yard in evenly distributed audio. Multiple

speakers envelop the yard, including several subwoofers that pop up like

mushroom caps with the bass tubs buried underground. All of this creates a

holistic audio experience that goes well beyond the single directional speakers

most homes have coming off their deck or patio.

Magnolia System Designer Dan Jones explained, “It’s so much

more balanced, it’s easier to listen to. You don’t notice where the sound

is coming from. You can walk any part of the yard and it’s the same

consistent sound everywhere you go. Plus, you don’t have to yell over it

or compete with it when you’re entertaining. It’s a more natural way to

listen to music.”

“The sound really elevates your experience,” the homeowner

added with a smile. “We have a beautiful view, and the sound of the

running water from the pool is very relaxing. But the music is the icing

on the cake. It’s a wow factor that allows us to listen to whatever we wish, so we

can create the perfect mood for the time of day or event going on in the space.”

Total control

While this audio solution is very high-end, the solution itself is extremely intuitive

and easy to use. With multiple zones, the family can play what they want, where

they want, at any volume they desire. And control is exceptionally easy with the

use of Sonos audio streaming. But no matter how loud they push the system, the

neighbors never know. As Dan noted, “Even though the system can play very

loudly, their neighbors don’t hear a thing because the sound faces into the yard.”

When you’re ready to complete your outdoor space with uncompromising

sound, look no further than your nearest Magnolia Design Center, where your

audio dreams come alive, and the sky is literally the limit.

From around the pool, to the outdoor fireplace and

patio, to the putting green, the MartinLogan Outdoor

Living™ Series speakers deliver pristine audio no

matter where you go in this magnificent outdor space.

“We have a beautiful view ... but the music is the icing on the cake.”

The man who helped bring this all together, Magnolia System Designer, Dan Jones.

THE RIGHTSOLUTIONS

What makes Magnolia different than other

companies that provide similar services, products

and solutions? It’s that Magnolia offers the right

solutions to every client, no matter how big or small their

needs may be. No one knows this better than System Designer

Victor Leyva, who we had the pleasure to chat with. Here’s what

makes him so proud to have worked for Magnolia for the past

7 years, and what he sees as the company’s biggest benefits.

Boutique feel, big backing

“One of Magnolia’s biggest benefits is that you get the

attention of a small, boutique-style store, while also having

the confidence that we’ll be here for years to come because

you have the backing of larger company in Best Buy. This also

gives us the tools to provide our clients with dedicated care

with a full engineering staff, project managers and installers.

And for aftercare, we have service technicians if anything

should go wrong.”

It’s about the experience

“At Magnolia, we are able to put customers and their needs

first. Seeing something come together for a client is what it’s

all about; from just getting their room functional, to providing

the right music system, to installing a complete smart home

solution. But sometimes it’s the little things that make the biggest

difference. I had a client who is hard of hearing, and by simply

providing him with a pair of $179 Sennheiser headphones, he

no longer needed to crank the TV volume up to 100%, which

upset his wife. Now he can put the headphones on, and his wife

can listen to the TV at a regular volume. That simple solution

made their day, and that’s what makes me feel good. It’s not so

much the products but the experience it gives them.

“Even on the bigger projects, it’s about the fun and

enjoyment we can create. We’re not heart surgeons. We

try to have fun with the client, try to be genuine and we try

not to take ourselves too seriously. So, while there is a lot of

excitement about the big jobs, we see an excitement that is

greater in providing the right solution for a client, and that has

nothing to do with the dollar amount.”

When you’re ready to find the right solution for your

home entertainment needs, look no further than Magnolia.

And if you’re at the Costa Mesa Magnolia Design Center, ask

for Victor—he’ll be happy to find you the right solution that’s

perfect for you.
