“Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” 2 Corinthians 9:6-7

Main Organizer

The origins of Hallelujah Oratorio Society (HOS) can be traced back to 1977, when choir members from the “The Successor” evangelical rally choir formed the Successor Choral Society under the auspices of the Singapore Chinese Christian Union. In 1987, we were renamed “Hallelujah Oratorio Society” (HOS).

The vision of HOS is to “Promote Church Music to glorify God and to edify man”, and the mission is to raise the standard of church music in the Asian region. This is realized through its concerts, ministry collaborations, music trainings, publica-tions, cultivation and training of talents in church music. HOS’s objective is to encourage and to challenge Christians to serve in the Church Music Ministry, with the aim of raising the standard and quality of church music amongst the churches.

In addition to the long established Hallelujah Chorus (1977) and Hallelujah Singers (2002), recent developments have also led to the formation of new groups, namely the Hallelujah Gloria Chorale (2018) and Hallelujah Chamber Orchestra (2019).

Under the direction of Rev Lee Chong Min, former music lecturer at the School of Church Music, Singapore Bible College (SBC), artistic director of the International Christian Choral Conductor Society (ICCCS) and various Christian choral groups throughout Asia, HOS has grown into one of Singapore’s most widely acclaimed Christian choral societies. Our repertoire ranges from oratorios, masses, and choral symphonies to contemporary choral anthems.

Performance Group

The Hallelujah Chamber Orchestra (HCO) was formed in January 2019 under the auspices of Hallelujah Oratorio Society (HOS). Being a part of HOS, HCO aligns with the mission of “Promoting Church Music to Glorify God and Edify Man” and aims to hone musicians in the aspects of musical excellence and spiritual growth. HCO began with a dozen string musicians, led by founding director Mr. Peter Yan, playing under the baton of music director John Tong. In 2021, Kimberlyn Wu joined in as a concertmaster and violin instructor.

The group aims to develop into a full orchestra that can play an active role in HOS performances and ministry programs. HCO currently runs a music program comprising a Violin Program (for beginners), Junior Orchestra (for Grade 3 & 4) and HCO (for Grade 5 & above) and is actively recruiting new members.

HCO held its first concert at the Esplanade Recital Studio in Dec 2019, perform-ing Mendelssohn’s String Symphony no. 10, Mozart’s Divertimento in D major K136, orchestra arrangements to Christian songs and the Christmas Canticles, a choral suite composed by Benjamin Harlan. The young team has also performed in several casual settings and a worship service, having also recently taken part in a masterclass with Wu Man Yun, from the SSO violin section.

Jesus Comes To Jerusalem as King John 12:12-15

Hosanna, Loud Hosanna (with “Ride On, Ride On In Majesty!” )Traditional Hymn; Arranged by Stephen DeCesare

(Lyrics for reference only)Hosanna, loud hosanna, the little children sang;Through pillared court and temple the lovely anthem rang.To Jesus, who had blessed them, close folded to his breast, The children sang their praises, the simplest and the best. From Olivet they followed mid an exultant crowd. The victory palm branch waving, and chanting clear and loud. The Lord of earth and heaven rode on in lowly state,Nor scorned that little children should on his bidding wait.

“Hosanna in the highest!” that ancient song we sing. For Christ is our Redeemer, the Lord of heaven, our King.O may we ever praise him with heart and life and voice,And in his blissful presence eternally rejoice.

Rejoice greatly By George Frederic Handel, from Messiah

Soprano AriaRejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem!Behold, thy King cometh unto thee; He is the righteous Saviour, and He shall speak peace unto the heathen. (Zechariah 9:9-10)

I know that my Redeemer liveth By George Frederic Handel, from Messiah

Soprano AriaI know that my Redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth. And though worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God. (Job 19:25-26) For now is Christ risen from the dead, the first fruits of them that sleep. (I Corinthians 15:20)

I know that my Redeemer liveth Music by James H. Fillmore; Arranged by Viktor DickLyrics by Jessie Brown Pounds (Lyrics for reference only)I know that my Redeemer liveth,And on the earth again shall stand;I know eternal life He giveth,That grace and power are in His hand.

I know His promise never faileth,The word He speaks, it cannot die;Tho’ cruel death my flesh assaileth,Yet I shall see Him by and by.

I know my mansion He prepareth,That where He is there I may be;Oh, wondrous thought, for me He careth,And He at last will come for me

Chorus:I know, I know that Jesus liveth,And on the earth again shall stand;I know, I know that life He giveth,That grace and power are in His hand.

Praise to the Lord

Glorious Things Of Thee Are Spoken By Joseph Haydn, 1797; Arranged by Don HartLyrics by John Newton, published in 1779

(Lyrics for reference only)Glorious things of thee are spoken,Zion, city of our God!He, whose Word cannot be broken,Formed thee for His own abode; On the Rock of Ages founded,What can shake thy sure repose? With salvation’s walls surrounded,Thou mayst smile at all thy foes.

See, the streams of living waters,Springing from eternal love,Well supply thy sons and daughters,And all fear of want remove:Who can faint while such a riverEver flows their thirst t’ assuage?Grace which, like the Lord, the giver,Never fails from age to age.

Round each habitation hov’ring,See the cloud and fire appear,For a glory and a cov’ring,Showing that the Lord is near; Thus deriving from our bannerLight by night and shade by day,Safe they feed upon the mannaWhich He gives them when they pray.

Saviour, if of Zion’s city,I through grace a member am,Let the world deride or pity,I will glory in Thy name;Fading is the worldling’s pleasure,All his boasted pomp and show;Solid joys and lasting treasureNone but Zion’s children know.

Praise To The Lord, The Almighty Arranged by Don Hart; Lyrics by Joachim Neander (1650-1680); Translated by Catherine Winkworth (1829-1878)

(Lyrics for reference only)Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation!O my soul, praise Him, for He is thy health and salvation! All ye who hear, now to His temple draw near;Sing now in glad adoration!

Praise to the Lord, who o’er all things so wondrously reigneth,Who, as on wings of an eagle, uplifteth, sustaineth.Hast thou not seen how thy desires all have beenGranted in what He ordaineth?

10

Praise to the Lord, who doth prosper thy work and defend thee,Who from the heavens the streams of His mercy doth send thee.Ponder anew what the Almighty can do,Who with His love doth befriend thee.

Praise to the Lord, who doth prosper thy work and defend thee,Surely His goodness and mercy shall ever attend thee.Ponder anew what the Almighty can do,Who with His love doth befriend thee.

Praise to the Lord! Oh, let all that is in me adore Him!All that hath life and breath, come now with praises before Him!Let the “Amen” sound from His people again;Gladly for aye we adore Him.

The Holy City By Stephen Adams (Michael Maybrick)Lyrics by Frederick E. Weatherly

Last night I lay a sleeping, there came a dream so fair,I stood in old Jerusalem beside the temple there.I heard the children singing and ever as they sang,Me thought the voice of angels from heaven in answer rang.“Jerusalem, Jerusalem! Lift up your gates and sing,Hosanna in the highest! Hosanna to your King!”

And then me thought my dream was changed, the streets no longer rang.Hushed were the glad Hosannas the little children sang. The sun grew dark with mystery, the morn was cold and chill,As the shadow of a cross arose upon a lonely hill.“Jerusalem, Jerusalem! Lift up your gates and sing,Hosanna in the highest! Hosanna to your King!”

And once again the scene was changed, New earth there seemed to be.I saw the Holy City beside the tideless sea.The light of God was on its streets, the gates were open wide. And all who would might enter and no one was denied. No need of moon or stars by night, or sun to shine by day;It was the new Jerusalem that would not pass away.“Jerusalem, Jerusalem! Lift up your gates and sing,Hosanna in the highest! Hosanna to your King!”
