1. Introduction

Industry Attachment is an important learning part of the programme. This provides students

opportunities to gain working experiences in local commercial / NGO sectors. Through this out-of

classrooms’ learning, students develop their components in the real-life working situation associated to

their subject studies on sports coaching and sports management. This working experience turns to be

an asset for helping them get jobs in the area upon their graduation.

Students are required to take 160 hours for Industry Attachment conducting during the semester break

between Year 1 and Year 2. It may also spread throughout Years 1 and Year 2 on exceptional situation.

A tutor from the programme teaching team will be assigned for guiding and coaching the student for

carry out industry attachment.

2. Objectives

The Industry Attachment will enable students to:

2.1. strengthen their academic and generic skills and knowledge in a real-world workplace

environment;

2.2. transfer their work-based skills, such as independent learning skills, problem-solving, planning

and organizing, decision-making and time-management, developed during Year 1 study to the

real working environment;

2.3. apply broad general skills, including interpersonal skills, language skills, creativity and critical

thinking, and recognize their interrelationship with the requirements of specific workplace

activities;

2.4. acquire experimentally certain workplace skills, habits, routines, attitudes and values, such as

reliable attendance, punctuality, responsibility, ability to meet deadlines and expectations,

effective relationships with supervisors, co-operative relationships in mandated team placements

and handling difficult or unfamiliar interpersonal situations;

2.5. recognize areas of generic skill learning for further development; and

2.6. experience the realities of the paraprofessional workplace as a personal pointer to further career

orientation.

3. Search Approaches

There are two approaches for locating placements of Industry Attachment:

3.1 Programme initiated; and

3.2 Self-search

4. Procedures

4.1 Before the Attachment

4.1.1 Programme initiated

If the students would like to get the attachments as posted by the programme, they should follow the

following procedures:

(a) Application

The Industry Attachment Co-ordinator(s) will post up jobs that gathered from local organizations for

students’ application. Students are required to follow specific application procedures as announced.

(b) Selection

The Industry Attachment Co-ordinator(s) will forward applications to the organizations for selection

and arranging interviews as appropriate. During the selection, organizations may take following

requirements into consideration :-

Level of languages proficiency (Chinese and English)

Previous work experience

Academic qualification

Personal interests and hobbies

Personality and long-term objectives

4.1.2 Self-search

A certain degree of flexibility on seeking the placements is allowed. Students can look for placements

themselves in related field. Such self-search placements are required to obtain prior approval from the

Industry Attachment Co-ordinator(s) in consultation with the Unit Learning and Teaching Committee

(Appendix 1). In seeking the placements, students should fulfill the following requirements:

(a) The job nature should be related to the students’ subject study;

(b) The working environment and conditions of the placement must be safe for the students;

(c) All activities and assignments of the placement must be legal.

(d) Students should not pay to any one in order to get the placement.

(e) A supervisor from the attached organization should be assigned to the student in the workplace.

4.2 During the Attachment

No matter which approach (i.e. programme initiated and self-search) be adopted, students are required

to take following actions during the attachment :-

4.2.1 Log Book (Appendix 2)

Students are required to record their job duties in the log book with endorsement from the

employers’/supervisors once every week. Employers and supervisors are also invited to provide

comments and feedback on students’ performance. This log book should submit to the responsible

tutors by two phases. The timelines for submission are:

(a) the interim in the middle when completing about 80 hours for the placement; and

(b) the final when completed all 160 hours’ placement.

The template of the log book for Industry Attachment is enclosed in Appendix 2.

4.2.2 Working Journal (Appendix 3)

Further, students are required to submit a journal after each working experience. Students can express

their views and opinions about their work for self-reflection purpose. The journal will be submitted

with the log book to the tutor for comments.

4.2.3 Tutor’s visit / Telephone call

During the attachment period, tutors may visit students or make telephone calls to them to get any

update on students’ placement.

4.3 At the end of the Attachment

4.3.1 Report

Students are also required to submit a report at the end of the attachment together with the industry

attachment record sheet (Appendix 5). The report should cover following information:-

(a) Description of the Organization(s)

Where is it located, type of business, number of employees, etc

(b) History of the Organization(s)

When founded, expansion, number of locations, future plans, etc

(c) Organization Structure(s)

Charts and description of the management and departments

(d) Job Responsibilities

Description of where you are working, colleagues, your general duties, etc

(e) Evidence of work done

Photos, leaflets or any other evidence of work can be attached to the report.

(f) The Industry

What do you know about the industry?

(g) What do you think of the external threats and opportunities of this industry?

What would you suggest to do to take these opportunities and to avoid these threats?

(h) Yourselves

What have you learnt from the attachment?

What is your career orientation? Is there any change from the previous one?

The due date for submission of report is within one month after completion of the attachment.

5. Guidelines of the Attachments

Disregard whichever channel for students to seek for the attachment, students should pay close attention

to the following guidelines:

5.1. Students can work for more than one organization to accumulate the required 160 working hours;

5.2. Students can work during the semester break between Year 1 and Year 2 or throughout their 2

years of studies as long as the required 160 working hours have been met;

5.3. The 160 working hours can be made up a number of tasks in different organizations or a single

organization. But each task must not be less than 10 working hours;

5.4 Apart from the attachment to external organizations, students’ relevant work in support to the

programme and functions of the Unit which meet objectives as enlisted in section 2 above, can

be considered as suitable industry attachment. This special arrangement should be approved by

the Industry Attachment Co-ordinator(s) with Unit Learning and Teaching Committee’s

endorsement.

6. Role of the Employer / Supervisor

The role of the organizations of the industry attachment is to:

6.1 provide students with opportunities to undergo on-the-job training;

6.2 assign students with job duties as appropriate;

6.3 ensure students a working environment in compliance with Hong Kong employment law;

6.4 provide a healthy and safety working condition to the placement students;

6.5 give supervision and guidance to students on work-related matters; and

6.6 co-operate with the Institute to monitor and evaluate students’ performance (Appendix 4).

7. Role of the Tutor

The role of the tutor of the industry attachment is to:

7.1. ensure the quality of the students’ self-sought placement opportunity and give approval;

7.2. assign students with job duties as appropriate;

7.3. monitor students’ progress and well-being during the industry attachment;

7.4. review students’ journal and log book regularly;

7.5. assist student to handle crisis if discussion between supervisor(s) and students is not possible or

helpful; and

7.6. during the attachment period, tutors may visit students or make telephone calls to them for get

any update on students’ placement.

8. Pre-attachment Briefing

A pre-attachment briefing would be held at the programme assembly to give students well preparation

for their work. Besides, participating organizations of the Industry Attachment may organize briefing

sessions before the start of the placement.

9. Terms and Conditions

9.1. The Industry Attachment is normally on non-paid basis ;

9.2. The level of responsibility and type of work for the placement are subject to students’ relevant

skills and abilities, and the assigning by the attached organizations;

9.3. During the attachment, students are regarded as the organization’s employees. Therefore,

students will be supervised the same as other employees in the organizations;

9.4. Throughout the attachment, students’ progress and well-being will be carefully monitored by

both tutors and the organization supervisors.

10. Work Ethics

The work ethics is a cultural norm that places positive moral value on working hard and doing a good

job. Employers are always seeking employees who value work ethics. In order to obtain satisfactory

comments from the employers, students should pay attention to the following work ethics:

10.1. honesty

10.2. punctuality

10.3. integrity

10.4. commitment

10.5. respect

10.6. teamwork orientation

11. Assessment Criteria

Industry attachment is part of the curriculum of the programme. Students are required to complete this

industry attachment for graduation. In order to complete the attachment, students must act in

compliance with the followings:

11.1. completion of 160 working hours of approved jobs;

11.2. worked along with the expectation of employee(s) at the satisfactory level; and

11.3. submission of the log book, journal, record sheet and report by the due date (Sections 4.2 and 4.3

above refers)

12. Procedures of Handling Crisis

If students have encountered any problems or difficulties in the workplaces, they should first approach

their immediate supervisors for discussion. However, if the discussion couldn’t solve the problem,

students should then approach their responsible tutors for advice. Our programme related staff can also
