PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Welcome back St. Marguerite Bourgeoys families to a new and exciting
academic year! It’s great to see all our students back from the summer break,
refreshed and ready to engage in many new and exciting learning experiences
and events that will be occurring throughout this school year. In light of the
Toronto Catholic School Board’s new three-year pastoral plan: Rooted in
Christ. We Belong, We Believe, We Become, we will be engaging in activities
to help students understand what it means to belong to our Catholic faith and
invite them to create a welcoming and inclusive community for all. I am
looking forward to a student driven energetic year filled with faith, hard work
and strong community relationships.
I hope all families took the time over the summer months to rest and relax
together with plenty of love and laughter in the home. We will continue to work
together to instill the Gospel values within our student population and support
the development and success of each student. The Virtue of the month is
Hospitality and the students of St. Marguerite Bourgeoys community are
exceptional at welcoming everyone!
Please complete all the initial paperwork for the new school year to ensure that
we have up-to-date information about your child/children. Information about
our student nutrition program at St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Catholic School will
follow under separate cover.
Thursday, September 27th is our annual Curriculum Night and BBQ.
It will be an evening for us to gather together and discuss grade specific
curriculum expectations. On this evening, we will also have our first Catholic
School Parent Council (CSPC) meeting. Nomination forms for elected positions
of our CSPC are attached, so please consider getting involved in different
aspects of your child’s schooling, we want to engage parents as we continue to
excel at St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Catholic School. Together we will have a
memorable impact on the hearts and minds of each student at St. Marguerite
Bourgeoys.
We will continue to include our Month-at-a-Glance Calendar in our newsletter
for your convenience and supplement additional information by personalized
flyers for upcoming events. Wishing everyone a fantastic start to the new school
year!
God Bless,
Mrs. Susan Scott

Cultural Foods
By: Jayla Muffty
Each culture has developed unique dishes by
utilizing the resources available to them locally. For
example, Japan is surrounded by water, and they
utilize the sea life in it to make delectable seafood
such as, international favourite, sushi. Another
delicious Japanese dish is Takoyaki. Takoyaki is
fried dough with octopus. Another prime example is
the curry leaf. The curry leaf was the first seasoning
to flavour food in India. India is not the only
country that has curry, as when the British
colonized other countries, they brought food from
region to region, including curry. After introducing
curry to the rest of the world, it became a world-
wide favourite. Although I only included a few
cultural foods, there is a plethora of cultural foods
for you to explore and enjoy.
By:Savita
The world is inhabited by many different cultures
each providing different experiences for the palate.
People all around the world have their own cultural
and traditional foods that are all unique in their own
way. For example, commonly found foods in the
Asian culture would pertain to rice as that is their
main dish to every meal. Cultures that inhabit foods
such as fish, would use the ocean as their resource
for it. People who lived in the jungle areas would
hunt for food as that is their main resource.
Depending on your culture and where you live, both
foods and traditions will differentiate throughout the
world.

The Factors That Affect Cultural Food
There are many factors that influence what or how
the food is served and/or made. Climate is a
significant factor. For example, the Chinese often
eat hot pot in the winter to keep them warm. In
northern China there are spicier dishes than there
are in the south, as, once again, it keeps them warm.
Also, some places are better than others for
growing food, this being shown by the fact that
France has a better climate to produce wine in than
China does, but China has the better climate for
growing tea. Seeing people eat a multitude of fish in
Japan is evident because it literally is an island
surrounded in water, showing that geography is yet
another important factor. Religion is another big
player that changes food and the way some eat- for
Muslims, eating pork is considered
unclean, Buddhism advises its followers to not eat
meat, et cetera. There is a plethora of things
affecting how, what, and why people eat, depending
on what resource each diverse culture has access to.

UKRAIANIAN HERITAGE MONTH September is a significant month for Ukrainian Canadians, as it closely follows annual traditional celebrations of
Ukraine’s Independence (August 24th). On March 30th, 2011, the Province of Ontario officially recognized September
7th as Ukrainian Heritage Day.
In May 2018, the TCDSB proclaimed September as Ukrainian Canadian Heritage Month and September 7th as Ukrainian
Canadian Heritage Day. This month acknowledges the history of Ukrainian Canadians and their contributions to Canada. It
also provides an opportunity for Canadians across the country to reflect on and celebrate the contributions of Ukrainian
Canadians to the growth and prosperity of Canada.
TCDSB is commemorating Ukrainian Canadian Heritage in our school system with a Ukrainian Canadian Mass and
Cultural Expose on Thursday, September 27th at Michael Power/St. Joseph High School. More information will be
shared in the coming weeks.
In order to celebrate this special month at your school, Ukrainian Canadian Heritage Month posters have been sent to your
schools for display. We have also attached resources and information with suggestions on how you can celebrate in your
schools and classrooms. These resources and others are available online
at:https://www.tcdsb.org/FORCOMMUNITY/HeritageCelebration/Ukrainian-Canadian-Heritage-
Month/Pages/default.aspx
For more information about the Ukrainian Canadian Heritage Month celebration and resources please contact Ericka
