The miracle at the wedding feast in Cana is the first sign of Jesus' divine iden"ty in the Gospel of John. We hear that a#er the disciples witnessed the water turn into wine, they "began to believe in him." Do you recall when you first started to believe in Jesus?

(1 Cor 12:7) Gospel: When the wine ran short, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” And Jesus said to her, “Woman, how does your concern affect me? Adoring Jesus on Tuesdays; Name Tag Sunday next week For the past two weekends, I have encouraged St. John

XXIII parishioners to spend some !me in Adora!on on Tuesdays before the exposed Blessed Sacrament.

So far, from what I can see, people are signing up for the !meslots when we expose Jesus in the monstrance a"er the daily Mass un!l 6 pm. I want to s!ll encourage you to take advantage of the grace of spending an hour before our Lord in the Eucharist, which is the source and summit of the Catholic faith.

Pope Francis said in order to sa!sfy our longing for the Lord we need to immerse ourselves in silent Eucharis!c adora!on. That’s the secret to knowing the Lord, he said. Pope Francis says the act of adora!on is the least known among Catholics

The word “adora!on” means a very personal, in!mate rela!onship between the believer and our Lord. Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, denotes the word adora!on is sort of kiss (ad (to) + oro (the mouth). Etymologically then, adora!on paints a picture of a kiss on the lips. So adoring the Lord in the Eucharist creates an in!macy with Jesus in our spiritual life.

The key concepts in Eucharis!c Adora!on are visibility and in!macy.

Since we are two parish communi!es coming together into one, next weekend St. John XXIII will hold a Name Tag Sunday. To get to know one another and to put a name with a face, we’ll slap on nametags when we enter the church. I encourage you to use the names of the people who sit around you when we welcome each other at the beginning of Mass. Also, strike up a conversa!on with those you don’t know.

On Tuesday, St. John XXIII will honor the Day of Prayer for the Legal Protec!on of Unborn Children at the 8:30 daily Mass and with Our Lady of Perpetual Help Novena a"er the Mass, and before the Blessed Sacrament. For further informa!on see my All Things Catholic column in this issue.

Have a good week and enjoy Monday’s Mar!n Luther King Jr. holiday.

Eucharis!c Adora!on At St. John XXIII, the Holy Eucharist is exposed for

adora!on on Tuesdays, between 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. in the church.

What is Eucharis!c Adora!on? Understood simply, Eucharis!c Adora!on is adoring or honoring the Eucharis!c Presence of Christ. In a deeper sense, it involves "the contempla!on of the Mystery of Christ truly present before us". During Eucharis!c Adora!on, we "watch and wait", we remain "silent" in His Presence and open ourselves to His Graces which flow from the Eucharist ... By worshiping the Eucharis!c Jesus, we become what God wants us to be! Like a magnet, The Lord draws us to Himself and gently transforms us. In its fullest essence ... Eucharis!c Adora!on is "God and Man reaching out for each other, at the same !me!"

For the Church, life has always been sacred for 2,000 years

Since it’s founding by Christ, the Catholic Church believes all life is sacred from concep!on un!l natural death.

And why is life sacred? The Church teaches that human life is sacred because of the crea!ve ac!on of God from our very existence in the womb. And God’s crea!ve ac!on remains with us as a special rela!onship with the Creator.

In that special rela!onship, God wants us to know Him, to love Him, and do His will in this world, and to be with Him forever in eternity. God is to be our sole end, and the Church stresses that and the sacredness of life in its 1987 document, Donum Vitae (Gi# of Life):

“God alone is the Lord of life from its beginning un!l its end: no one can under any circumstance claim for himself the right directly to destroy an innocent human being”

The U.S. Catholic Bishops have declared Tuesday the Day of Prayer for the Legal Protec!on of Unborn Children in support of the full restora!on of the right to life and penance for viola!ons to the dignity of the human person commi$ed through acts of abor!on.

This day of prayer wraps up a week of celebra!ng life from the womb to the tomb. Tuesday is the anniversary of the 1973 Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade that legalized abor!on in the United States.

With about 70 million babies aborted in the United States since 1973, Catholics are called to observe this day of prayer with the peniten!al prac!ces of prayer, fas!ng and/or almsgiving.

While the abor!on argument is highly poli!cized, this column will look at the Church’s historical posi!on on life.

The Church’s stance against abor!on developed early on and begins with Chris!anity’s Jewish roots. In the ancient Jewish world, the Israelites were surrounded by different cultures in Pales!ne that prac!ced infan!cide, infant sacrifice and abor!on.

As a result, Jews of the Old and New Testaments and Orthodox Jews of today believe God is the author of human life. And His crea!ve power produces the child in

the womb and brings it to full life. In the Roman Empire at the !me of Jesus, abor!on and

infan!cide were prac!ced, so much so that in parts of the empire there was zero popula!on growth.

Just as the Jews, the early Chris!ans upheld the sanc!ty of the life of the unborn. Those first Chris!ans upheld not only what the Jews believed or the Old Testament passages said on the sacredness of life in the womb, but on the mystery of the Incarna!on of the Son of God.

The Church believes that Jesus was conceived in Mary’s womb and His life was sacred from the first moment of His concep!on—thus all life is sacred from concep!on.

This is also emphasized in Mary’s Visita!on with her cousin Elizabeth. The story of the Visita!on and John the Bap!st leaping in Elizabeth’s womb a$ests to the sanc!ty of life and the personhood of the unborn child. Elizabeth tells Mary: “Blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb.”

There is a meme out on social media showing Mary mee!ng Elizabeth, and the meme says: “The first to recognize Jesus was an unborn child.”

Given these Scriptural revela!ons along with emphasis on the Incarna!on the Son of God, the Catholic Church has condemned the prac!ce of abor!on for 2,000 years.

Early Church wri!ngs condemned abor!on, and they include: The Didache, which dates from 80 AD. The Didache states: “You shall not procure abor!on. You shall not destroy the newborn child.”

Other early Church wri!ngs condemning abor!on are: the Epistle of Barnabas da!ng 138 AD and A Plea on Behalf of Chris"ans by Early Church Father Athenagoras (133-190 AD).

For 2,000 years, the Catholic Church has consistently upheld the sanc!ty of the life and condemned the act of abor!on.

Notes From Bishop Hurley Last week saw the closing on the sale of the St. Robert Bellarmine Church, school, convent and gym to the Charter Development Company (Na!onal Heritage Academies) to operate a Charter School in those facili!es. I have known the people that operate Na!onal Heritage Schools for many years and hold them in high regard. I am pleased that the facili!es

will con!nue to be used and significant upgrading will be taking place. The sale price was $1,800,000.00 with a net return to the parish of $1,620,446.62 a"er real estate commissions and related closing costs are factored in.

This past week we completed the closing on the St. Robert Bellarmine Rectory to a private individual family with a net return of approximately $184,000.00 a"er commissions and fees.

It is good to see all of these facili!es will con!nue to be used and new life will be breathed into them, with the new owners, as well as the benefit to the community.

Debts and Liabili!es: The parish has some substan!al debts and obliga!ons totaling approximately $675,000.00. These debts are to meet our obliga!ons arising from past CSA targets, Diocesan Assessments, and unpaid employee benefits from past years. These debts are to the Archdiocese, Michigan Catholic Conference and are from St. Robert Bellarmine Parish. The debt includes some past due invoices. We are now able to pay these obliga!ons and the parish will be free and clear of any debt.

The support of any parish for regular opera!ons needs to come from the Sunday offerings. The proceeds from the sale should not be used for regular opera!ng expenses. A plan has to be submi$ed to the Consultors of the Archdiocese for the use of the proceeds of the sale before they can be expended. I have been working closely with our finance council on that plan that looks like this:

Capital Projects: · Refurbish pews and kneelers from St. Robert Bellarmine and install at St.

John XXIII · New hea!ng and air condi!oning for the church · Work on the parking lot · New doors and handicapped access to the church.

In addi!on, funds would be set aside for evangeliza!on efforts and catholic school scholarships as well as charitable gi"s to Catholic Chari!es, Sacred Heart Major Seminary, and the Redford Interfaith Center.

With all of this, there would be an addi!onal balance of approximately $500,000.00 reserved for the benefit of the parish for the future.

The details on many of these items s!ll need to be worked out but this is the broad framework that the Finance Council and we are looking at and has been submi$ed to the Archdiocese for approval.

I know this has been a long and at !mes difficult process and I am grateful for your understanding as we deal with some of these prac!cal ma$ers.

With good wishes for God’s Blessings, Bishop Hurley

Five Ways to Pray with Jesus During Ordinary Time

The USCCB tells us that Ordinary Time is a !me for “growth and matura!on.” Ordinary Time is the “!me of conversion. This is living the life of Christ.” During Ordinary Time, the Gospel readings are focused on Jesus and what he taught. We pre$y much see and hear everything the disciples experienced and heard—stories from Jesus’ life, his parables, and his many teachings—because we, too, are Jesus’ disciples. Ordinary Time is an opportunity to claim our discipleship fully.

Here are some simple ways you can help children connect and pray with the image of Jesus as Christ the Teacher during Ordinary Time: 1. When praying with or studying

the Sunday Gospel, point out whenever Jesus is in “teaching mode” and ask students to picture themselves si<ng at his feet, learning from Him.

2. Keep an icon of Christ the Teacher in the prayer space. Make sure your prayer space is decorated with a piece of green fabric.

3. Remind children that they, too, are disciples, listening to and learning from Jesus. Do this o"en, so it becomes part of the way they iden!fy themselves.

4. Help them develop a “spirituality of growth” by discussing how they learn from hearing stories about Jesus at Mass.

5. Help children understand that they go to Mass to grow to become more like Jesus through hearing him in his Word and receiving him in the Eucharist.

Simple and Effec!ve Ways To Share Your

Catholic Faith With Others ü Try always to do things in love.

Let the love you choose be “agape love”… that is, love for the sake of the other.

ü Keep Sundays holy. Try not to spend money or engage in compe!!ve organized sports on the Sabbath. Try not to do things that require others to work on Sunday.

ü Forgive others, sincerely. ü Be hospitable. Invite, welcome,

and engage others as a Catholic lifestyle.

ü Men!on your faith in public. Don’t be afraid to tell your story. Your life is your experience of faith. Recognize where God has “broken in”. Tell others. Feel free to speculate on a recent “God moment”.

ü Say “thank God”, “I believe”, or “Amen” in public.

ü Go to confession regularly. Once a month is a good “rule of thumb”. Make this a family prac!ce, too.

ü Be bold enough to say, “That is against my faith”, or “my faith teaches….”

ü Make it a regular habit to visit Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament.

Mercy Nights Jesus can do great things in your life. Don't believe us? Come to a Mercy Night. Let Him prove it.

Let's be honest, life is full of baggage. So o"en we are expected to "go at it alone" or "tough it out". Doesn't that seem counterproduc!ve? What if, instead, we didn't "go at it alone" but instead we "go at it with Him"?

Real peace and real joy are available and a$ainable.

Similar to the Come Encounter Christ events, Mercy Nights are about laying down the things that drain us and hold us down, and receiving freedom through the gentle mercy of Jesus. Come and receive life and heal wounds through the power of scripture and the presence of Jesus as we encounter him through adora!on, reconcilia!on and music. All are welcome to join the Franciscan Friars of the Holy Spirit for an evening of life changing mercy and encounter with Jesus. · January 25 St. Mary’s Monroe 7:00- 9:00 Monroe · February 8 St. Hugo of the Hills 7:00- 9:00 Bloomfield Hills · February 15 St. Thecla 7:00- 9:00 Clinton Township · February 22 MBS Cathedral 7:00- 9:00 Detroit (Spanish)

Stewardship Reflec!on Today’s Gospel reading from John recounts the familiar story of the wedding feast at Cana when Jesus launched His

public ministry by performing His first miracle at his mother’s request.

In the midst of the feast, the Blessed Mother no!ced that the wine had run out and pointed out the problem to Jesus. Then, she gave the servants instruc!ons that are equally applicable to us modern-day stewards, saying, “Do whatever He tells you.” Jesus gives the servants a simple and seemingly mundane task, telling them to fill some stone jars with water. They did what He told them to do. And Jesus used their obedience in the accomplishment of that simple task to perform His first miracle, turning the water into the choicest wine.

Our Lord didn’t have to include those servants in order to perform this miracle — He chose to. And today, 2,000 plus years later, He s!ll chooses to include us in the performance of His miracles through our coopera!on with Him in using the gi"s and talents He has given us. What a privilege! Let us take care to listen to our Blessed Mother: let’s examine our lives this week to see if we really are “doing whatever He tells us,” coopera!ng with God to make the best use of the gi"s He has given us for the benefit of those around us. If we all take this call seriously, He will perform miracles in our families and our parish.
