STAAR EOC Assessment – Spring 2021Mr. Angel Martinez, School Counselor

▪ STAAR EOC is required by state law to be offered to all HISD students. The following STAAR EOC exams are required for HS graduation: English I, English II, Algebra 1, Biology, and US History

▪ Given the important academic information these assessments provide, HAIS will offer multiple opportunities for remote/virtual students to complete testing on campus while adhering to CDC health and safety guidelines. (schedule on next slide)

▪ Please note that to ensure equity for all students, remote testing is not allowed for virtual students in Spring 2021. In order to participate in state testing, remote/virtual students would need to be present at an approved district testing site.

▪ Remote/virtual students who do not participate in Spring 2021 testing will not be penalized academically. However, students who are scheduled to take EOC assessments for STAAR EOC will be missing an opportunity to meet assessment graduation requirements.

STAAR EOC Assessments Schedule

▪ Tests will be completed in person on the following dates:

4/6/21 English 1 EOC (9th grade AVID –Yeriazarian, Rodriguez, and Baltz)

4/7/21 English 1 EOC (9th grade AVID – Diallo, Nguyen, and Bobba)

4/8/21 English 2 EOC (10th grade AVID – Polley, Kala, and Shyr)

4/9/21 English 2 EOC (10th grade AVID – Borger, Myers, and Puente)

5/6/21 Algebra 1 EOC (9th graders taking Algebra 1)

5/7/21 Biology and U.S. History EOC (9th and 11th grade)

We will have at most 12 students in each classroom at one time with social distancing measures in place.

Students will be able to leave campus after they have completed test.

STAAR EOC Google Form

▪ For the 2020-2021 year, we are highly recommending that students take the STAAR EOC assessments due to this still being a high school graduation requirement.

▪ If a student doesn't take the EOC this school year, then the student will take the EOC over the summer or next school year. We feel that this could leave a student at a disadvantage since they will not have reviewed the content recently.

▪ Please complete the google form below so that we have the information needed to prepare for testing.

AP Exams

Ms. Victoria Williams, Magnet Coordinator

2021 AP Exam Overview

▪ Most exams will be offered online digitally, and students will have the option to test at home or at school. AP Calculus AB/BC, AP Chemistry, AP Chinese, and AP Spanish are only offered in person.

▪ Beginning in April, students can access the exam application and a digital exam practice resource that enables students to confirm the viability of their technology well before test day, experience the exam day flow, and practice answering exam questions, including each type of multiple-choice and free-response question they’ll encounter on exam day.

▪ All versions of the AP exams in all subjects will be full length and cover the course’s full scope of content required for college credit.

2021 AP Exam Security

▪ 2021 AP digital exams have been designed with security in mind, so students can take exams at home if they are unable to test at their school. Digital exams administered at home or in school will:– Not allow students to return to answered questions or move back-and-forth between

unanswered questions

– Begin at the same time worldwide with synchronous section start times

– Not include questions that can be answered with internet searches, textbooks, notes, study guides, or similar material

– Include security features to prevent students from collaborating, accessing unauthorized aids, or attempting to have someone else test for them

– Be reviewed with plagiarism detection software and other monitors and post-exam analyses for detecting exam violations

▪ Exam violations on any AP Exam—paper or digital—will result in a score cancellation and additional consequences as warranted.

Title I, Part A Program-Definition

Definition

Title I, Part A is a formula grant program that provides financial assistance to local educational agencies (LEAs) and schools with high numbers or high percentages of children from low-income families . Formula grant programs are noncompetitive awards based on a predetermined formula . Title I, Part A Program- Purpose

Purpose

The Title I, Part A program is intended to help ensure that all

children meet challenging state academic standards,

regardless of economic status . Title I is the government’s

attempt to provide all children with the opportunity to

receive a fair, equitable and high-quality education, and to

close the achievement gap .

28

How Schools Qualify

• Campuses with an economically disadvantaged enrollment percentage of 40%-100% are considered “school-wide” campuses.

• Campuses with an economically disadvantaged enrollment percentage

of 35-39% are considered a “targeted assistance” campus.

• Campuses with an economically disadvantaged enrollment percentage below 35% are not eligible for Title I funds.

This school year, our campus Houston Academy for International

Studies is identified as an Economically Disadvantaged Title I Campus .

29

Title I Annual Meeting

These “supplemental” federal funds are used to:

• Provide professional-development for teachers, paraprofessionals, and administrators

• Hire certified personnel, and highly qualified instructional assisting staff.

• Provide additional resources – technology, personnel, materials, instructional programs, software, and

• Encourage parent and family involvement.

So, the Title I Grant supports activities that focus on parental and family involvement.

33

Parental Involvement Requirements

34

• Parent Notifications (These are regular written

communications to inform parents).

• Examples of parent notifications are:

statements of shared responsibilities).

(This is a plan to involve parents).

Parental Involvement Requirements

35

• Title I Parent Meetings – These are regular face-to-face or virtual meetings to provide trainings to parents as well as collaborate with them about the progress of their child’s education. We will conduct at least 4 meetings each year. Each meeting will be conducted twice; once in the morning and once in the evening and on different days. A total of 8 meetings will be conducted to accommodate parents.

• Parent and Family Engagement Surveys – The External Funding Department will provide a parent survey at the end of the school year to evaluate the campus’ Title I, Part A Parent and Family Engagement Program.

Houston Academy for International Studies
