FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Dear Cedar Canyon Families,

I hope you all had a chance to enjoy fall break. It is hard to believe that we have already

started the 2nd quarter of school. I have noticed that once we reach November, the time starts to fly by.

The month of November gives us the Thanksgiving holiday. It is always nice to reflect during this time of year

about the past year and the many blessings we have received. I am extremely thankful for a great staff,

amazing kids, and a supportive community. Thank you for your commitment to our school and our students.

Fall Parties This week we had our Fall Parties. It was great to see the kids having a good time. Our students were provided with food, fun and activities. There is nothing better than to hear the laughter of students and staff fill the hallways. Thank you for your help in making this happen!

Parent/Teacher Conferences

Thank you to all the parents who took time to Google meet with your child’s teacher during parent/teacher

conferences. Although it looked slightly different this year, I hope it was a time of good discussions regarding

your child’s educational journey that provided you with points of celebration towards accomplishments and

some insight toward continual growth. Please continue to communicate with your child’s teacher throughout

the year. The partnership between home and school is essential in your child’s success and growth.

Veteran’s Day On Wednesday, November 11th, Cedar Canyon will celebrate Veteran’s Day. Students will be learning about the importance of this day and the sacrifices of our veterans and their families. We will have a reverse parade to honor those people who have given so much to protect and serve our country. Please have your child wear Red, White, and Blue on this special day. Lifeskill Focus In continuing with our school wide focus of “A Healthy You,” students will be introduced over the next month to the lifeline of Cooperation – to work together towards a common goal. Over the next month, students will be asked to reflect on how they can cooperate within school, home and in the community. Within the newsletter, I have provided the cooperation poster for you and a calendar of things that students can do during the month of November to practice cooperation at home. In addition to this, teachers will talk with students about how to cooperate within the classroom. We will finish off this month with our Falcon Factor on Monday, November 30th and announce our High Flyers for Cooperation. Outside Gear The leaves are falling outside and so is the temperature. Please make sure your son or daughter comes to

school properly dressed for the weather. We want to make sure that he/she can be comfortable for recess

and other outside activities. If your child comes home without their gear, remind them to check the lost and

found. We have quite the collection already.

Swings Preparation has begun at Cedar Canyon for the installation of our new swings. The students were able to watch the crew dig out the area for the swings during recess. It was so much fun to hear the excitement in

their voice. They just cannot wait for them to be installed The goal is for the swings to be completed the week of November 9th, weather permitting.

School Bulletin Boards One of the many things that I love about Cedar Canyon is our amazing bulletin boards! They brighten up our hallways and provide the students a place to showcase their work. I wanted to provide you with a glimpse of what we get to see around the school. I hope that you enjoy them as much as I do.

I hope you have a wonderful November and a Happy Thanksgiving!

Music Notes with Mrs. Weidner

Happy November! We have been hard at work in music class. Here is what each grade will be working on in November:

K- Steady beat vs. rhythm, loud vs. soft, fast vs. slow, high vs. low

1- So and Mi

2- So/Mi/La, half notes

3- Dotted half notes, reading notes on the staff

4- Dotted half notes, treble clef note names, ukulele

5- Dotted quarter and eighth notes, ukulele

This year, I have been choosing a “Secret Star Student” before each class comes into the room. Throughout the class I

will watch that student and, if they are showing exemplary behavior and going above and beyond in their work, they will

receive a certificate to take home and show their grown-up what a great example they were in class! Your child may

have already brought a certificate home! Every child will be chosen, and many students will get chosen more than once

throughout the year. It has been a fun way to communicate the great behavior we see in the Cedar Canyon music room

and celebrate each other’s success!

If you have any questions, please contact me at [email protected].

- As we wrap up October and look forward to November you may start hearing your student talk about the games

we are playing in the gym. We are finishing up the fun Fall themed games with a new-this-year activity,

Halloween Putt Putt. It was so much fun, and the students were all super excited. But of course, I couldn’t leave

out the famous Haunted House. I only call it that but really, it’s nothing more than a tagging game on scooters

while wearing glow-in-the-dark necklaces with the lights off. As we continue into the month of November, we

will be finishing up striking and moving into soccer.

- You may have also heard about the Recess Running Club. This is a program designed to get students moving

during recess. The students have QR code bracelets they scan after completing a lap around the playground.

They may choose to run, walk or jog. For every 5 miles (roughly 19 laps) the students receive a toe token.

Special monthly toe tokens are also being given this year. In addition, students can earn other special tokens like

the 100-lap club and the marathon club token. This is a special award given by Mrs. Bailey for those students

who have completed 26.2 miles (the distance of a marathon.) In addition to the toe tokens, each grade level

has selected a destination to run to. All miles are added together by grade level and the students can see their

progress to their destination on a bulletin board in the cafeteria. I’m excited to see the totals come in every

week. All students combined have run a total of over 2,320 miles around the playground just THIS YEAR!
