(RV) Southern Arkansas (2-0, 2-0 GAC) welcomes in No. 23 Harding (1-1, 1-1 GAC) for a Family Day clash from Wilkins Stadium at Rip Powell Field. After a thrilling 30-28 win over Oklahoma Baptist last weekend, which saw sopho-more place kicker Austin Wilkerson sneak in a career-long 48-yard field goal attempt as time expired, the Muleriders pushed their Division II-best home winning streak to 17 games. The last time Southern Arkansas suffered defeat inside the confines of Wilkins Stadium at Rip Powell Field was in 2015; a high-scoring 70-42 defeat at the hands of No. 16 Harding. On Saturday, SAU faces the flexbone offense of the nationally-ranked Bisons which have made back-to-back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Division II Playoffs, which included a run to the national semifinals in 2017. The Week 3 showdown has plenty of story lines as the two programs are set to collide on the gridiron for the 56th time in a series that is deadlocked at 27-27-1. The Muleriders upset No. 7 Harding 28-23 on the road last fall. It was a victory that saw SAU defeat its highest ranked opponent in program history and it was also the Muleriders’ first win in Searcy since the 2003 campaign. Additionally, a victory on Saturday would give Southern Arkansas its third-straight win over Harding; something the Muleriders haven’t accomplished against the Bisons since winning four-consecutive meetings from 1980-1983.

LAST WEEKSouthern Arkansas is off to a 2-0 start after picking up a road win over Southern Nazarene (34-14) in the season opener and enters the third week of the season following an emotional 30-28 win against Oklahoma Baptist last weekend in Magnolia. Harding enters Week 3 of the season after shutting out Arkansas-Monticello 24-0 in the Bi-sons’ home opener. HU is currently 1-1 after suffering a season-opening 16-14 loss to No. 6 Ouachita in Arkadelphia.

SCOUTING THE OFFENSESThrough two games, the Muleriders rank second in scoring offense (32.0 ppg) and in total offense (475.0 ypg). SAU’s 253.5 yards per game on the ground ranks second behind Harding, while the team’s 221.5 yards through the air rank fifth. Three running backs are over 120 yards on the ground this season with redshirt freshman Kor’Davion Washington leading the team with 192 yards on 28 touches with a touchdown. Redshirt senior SirCharles Perkins follows with 177 yards on 28 carries with a team-leading two rushing touchdowns. Junior quarterback Hayden Mallory, through his first two career starts, is averaging 218 yards passing per game behind a 157.3 quarterback efficiency rating. He has tossed three touchdowns and is completing 64.6% (31-of-48) of his pass attempts. Mallory’s top target so far this campaign has been redshirt senior Jared Lancaster who has

hauled in eight passes for 170 yards and two scores. Nine different players have caught a pass this season. Harding runs the throwback Flexbone style that prominently features the running game and the deceptive triple option. Under that system, the Bisons have established one of the nation’s most-prolific rushing attacks ranking among the top-5 in Division II at season’s end each year since 2010. Last year, the Bisons were second in DII in rushing as they averaged 341.1 yards per game. They enter Saturday’s game averaging a league-best 281.5 yards per game on the ground. Three Harding running backs have carried at least 17 times this season with Cole Chancey leading the team with 38 carries. Chancey averages 84.0 yards per game rushing, while Tristan Tucker is the leading rusher with 201 yards on 17 carries with two touchdowns. Preston Paden has also carried 17 times totaling 44 yards.

SCOUTING THE DEFENSES

The top two teams in regards to total defense square off as Harding leads the GAC in the category at 212.0 yards per game at just 3.8 yards per play. SAU follows in second at 260.0 yards per game at 4.3 yards per play. Additionally, the two best rushing defenses will be in Magnolia on Saturday as SAU leads the league at allowing just 73.5 yards per game on the ground, while Harding allows just a half yard more. Through two games, Harding owns the best scoring defense in the GAC allowing just 8.0 ppg, while the Muleriders’ 21.0 points per game allowed ranks sixth. Harding’s Cory Batie leads the team in tackles with 17 total, including 15 solo stops. Dylan Hendricks follows with 14 tackles and Jacory Nichols has added ten. As a team, the Bisons have totaled a dozen tackles for loss totaling 47 yards. The Muleriders have been led in tackling by senior Lorenzo Watkins who has 12 total tackles including three for a loss. Redshirt junior DeMarcus Pegue and sophomore Brock Floyd have totaled 11 tackles, while redshirt junior Antonio Washington follows with 10 tackles. Washington is coming off an impressive performance in last Saturday’s win as he recorded eight tackles with 3.5 coming for loss totaling 13 yards in addition to three quarterback hurries and a pair of pass breakups.

NOTABLES*SAU sophomore place kicker Austin Wilkerson was named the GAC’s Special Teams Player of the Week after connecting on all three point-after attempts as well as three field goals, including a career-long 48-yard game winner. *Harding’s Cory Batie, a junior defensive back, was named the GAC’s Defensive Player of the Week following a five tackle, two interception performance against the Weevils. He returned one of the interceptions 75 yards for a score and his other pick went for 77 yards and led to a Harding field goal.

SEARCY, Ark. – There is an old adage that states "Defense wins championships." Although (RV) Southern Arkansas and #7 Harding didn't clash for the Great American Conference title on Sunday afternoon, the heavyweight tilt had all the makings of a championship game from the start to the finish. And in the end, it was the SAU defense that delivered a late knockout punch as the Muleriders overcame a slow start to upset the nationally-ranked Bisons 28-23 on the road on a cool, overcast Sunday afternoon inside First Security Stadium. The Muleriders' victory over Harding in Searcy is the first for the program since 2003. Hard-ing is the highest ranked opponent Southern Arkansas has defeated in the program's Division II Era (1995-96). RECORDS(RV) Southern Arkansas Muleriders (2-0, 2-0 GAC)#7 Harding (1-1, 1-1 GAC)

TURNING POINT» The third quarter served as the turning point in the game for Southern Arkansas. SAU held the football for 10:06, while converting 5-of-6 third-down plays and totaling eight first downs. The Mulerider offense rushed 13 times for 36 yards and Renner was 7-of-10 passing for 81 yards and the touchdown to Lancaster.» In comparison, Southern Arkansas totaled just 73 yards of offense on 17 plays in the first half; 44 yards fewer on just six fewer plays than its third quarter production.» Additionally, after spending almost 24 minutes on the field in the first half, the Mulerider defense used a halftime breather as well as a brief 4:50, split between two Harding drives, on the field in the third quarter to show out in a resilient effort in that pivotal fourth quarter.» The first 15 minutes out of halftime shifted the course of the game and Preston's third forced fumble of the game which Lison housed proved to be the knockout punch. OF NOTE» Preston had a day to remember as the fearsome linebacker totaled 16 tackles; 13 of which were solo stops, including 3.0 tackles for loss for 11 yards, while also adding the aforementioned three forced fumbles. The last SAU player with 16 or more stops in a game was in 2015 when Elgin Moore delivered 17 tackles against Ouachita.» Sunday marked the first fumble return(s) for a touchdown(s) for the Mulerider defense since Preston scooped-and-scored from 20 yards out against East Central on November 7, 2015.» Anthony Washington picked up 11 stops (6-5) and sophomore Demarcus Pegue added ten (4-6).» Southern Arkansas held Harding's flexbone in check as they surrendered just 184 yards on 60 carries at 3.1 yard per rush, while forcing the ball on the turf four times.» The Muleriders totaled 13.0 tackles for loss for 48 yards and the team's three fumble recoveries resulted in 79 yards and a pair of scores.» Southern Arkansas won the time of possession in the second half (18:18 to 11:42). Ad-ditionally, SAU outscored the Bisons 21-6 in the second half.» Renner tossed a pair of touchdown passes; the 99th and 100th scoring strikes of his career, to move into a tie for second place with former Central Arkansas quarterback and current UCA head coach Nathan Brown on the state's all-time collegiate touchdown passing list.» His 233 yards passing (21-of-33) give him 10,262 for his career; 296 yards from overtaking Brown for third all-time on the state's career collegiate passing yards list.» Higgins went over 2,000 yards receiving for his career after hauling in four catches for 66 yards. He now has 2,020 yards receiving; 830 yards back of Nik Lewis' program record.» Lancaster hauled in four passes for a team-high 76 yards and added 17 yards worth of punt returns to total 93 all-purpose yards.» Alexander was the leading rusher with 40 yards on a dozen carries.

In his time at SAU, Keopple has coached 60 all-confer-ence players, 30 all-academic honorees, 18 all-region selections, and nine All-Americans.In terms of record, Keopple has amassed a 57-50 (.533) overall mark with 50 of those wins coming over the last seven seasons. In that time, Keopple has guided the Mulerider football program to a .500 winning percentage or better each year and has earned a trio of post-season bowl bids with the C.H.A.M.P.S. Heart of Texas Bowl in 2012 and the Live United Bowl in 2016 and 2018. The Heart of Texas Bowl was SAU’s first post-season ap-pearance since 2003.His 57 wins are currently the third-most in program history and his tenure roaming the Mulerider sidelines is the third-longest as well.Additionally, since 2012, the Muleriders have a .649 winning percentage and are an impressive 28-3 (.903) inside the confines of Wilkins Stadium at Rip Powell Field. In 2018, SAU pushed its home winning streak to 16 games, which currently stands as the longest active streak in Division II, after they finished unbeaten in Magnolia for the third-straight season and for the fourth time in the past five years.Last season, Southern Arkansas posted an 8-4 record overall as they became just the second known team in school his- tory after the 1952 Southern State College Mulerid-ers to start a season 6-0. Keopple led the team to the program’s sixth bowl game in school history when they met Missouri Western in Texarkana. The 2018 campaign also saw South-ern Arkansas climb as high as No. 15 in the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) DII Coaches' Top 25 Poll during the season and spent time inside the Top 20 of the D2Football.com Poll. Both rankings are program highs for the Muleriders under Keopple. In terms of production on the field, the 2018 Muleriders again led the Great

American Conference in Total Offense for the fifth-consecutive season as the unit churned out 405.0 yards per game behind a league-best 3,279 yards per game. Additionally, the offense ranked seventh in the country in both Third-Down Conversion Percentage (49.4%) and Completion Percent-age (65.0%).In 2017, SAU went 7-4 overall, with an unblemished 5-0 mark at home. While the overall record was a touch below the 2016 campaign that saw SAU go 9-3, the 2017 Muleriders remained one of the top overall offenses in the GAC and NCAA Division II.That year, SAU led the league and ranked 21st in DII in Total Offense at 458.4 yards per game. It was the fourth-straight season that the Mulerid-ers led the GAC in Total Offense. Additionally, it was fourth-consecutive season in which SAU fielded a Top-25 offense in DII.Over the last seven years under Keopple, offense has certainly been a strength of the program as the Muleriders have averaged 463.0 yards of total offense with 294.8 of the yards coming through the air and 168.2 yards coming on the ground.Along with the yardage gained, Keopple’s offense has been able to put points on the board at a high rate. Last season, Southern Arkansas put up 28.3 points per game. In 2017, the Muleriders averaged 36.4 points per game; making it six-straight years in which the team would score at least 35.0 points per game. Over that time, the Muleriders averaged 36.4 points per game. While Keopple’s high-powered offenses over the past seven seasons have taken many of the headlines, his defensive unit has enjoyed success in its own right as well in his time at SAU.This past season, the Mulerider Defense posted the 24th best Total Defense in the country, the 27th-best Scoring Defense and the 31st-best Rushing Defense. One of the unit’s most notable performances in 2018 came on the road against No. 7 Harding as the unit held the Bisons’

famed flexbone in check as they surrendered just 184 yards on 60 carries at 3.1 yard per rush, while forcing the ball on the turf four times, twice of which led to scoop-and-score touchdowns including the game’s dagger.

In 2017, the defensive side of the ball continued to de-velop into a strength as it ranked second in

the GAC in Total Defense for the second-straight year. In 2016, the Mulerider

defense improved significantly from the 2015 season as SAU ranked in the top-five in all nine major defensive stat categories in the GAC after only ranking that high in one the year previous. In 2012, Keopple’s defense led the

GAC and ranked sixth nationally in

rushing defense, allowing just 91.4 yards per game. In 2013, the Muleriders’ defense would force 26 turnovers, ranking them 44th in DII. Sixteen (16) of those forced turnovers came via the interception as SAU ranked 33rd nationally in passes intercepted on defense.Keopple’s recent success at SAU comes as no surprise as his previ-ous coaching experience includes Division I assistant coaching stints at Arkansas, Boise State, and Central Arkansas. In addition to his extensive previous collegiate coaching experience, Keopple spent the six seasons prior to coming to SAU as the head coach at Arkansas High in Texarkana. While at Arkansas High, Keopple led his teams to two consecutive state championships 2006 and 2007. Overall, Keopple amassed a 44-26-1 record during his six seasons. In 2006, Keopple was honored as the 6A State Farm Coach of the Year. That same year, he was also named as the 6A Outstanding Coach by the National Football Foundation, a feat he would repeat in 2007. Keopple was also selected to serve on the high school football All-Star coaching staffs in 2004 and 2007.Before taking over the reins at Texarkana, Keopple spent the 2002 season at the University of Tulsa on former Arkansas defensive coordinator Keith Burns’ staff. He spent that season coaching the defensive line and serving as recruiting coordinator for the Hurricanes.Keopple served as an assistant under Houston Nutt at Arkansas in 1998 and 1999 and was with Nutt at Boise State in 1997, coaching the defensive line at both schools. The Razorbacks were 1998 SEC Western Division champions and finished 9-3, playing Michigan in the Citrus Bowl. The 1999 Razorbacks went 8-4 and defeated Texas in the Cotton Bowl, finishing the season 12th in rushing defense and 17th in total defense.Keopple went to Boise State from Newport High School where he was head

coach and athletic director in 1996. He guided the Greyhounds to the state playoffs with an 8-3 record, giving him an overall mark of 52-29-1 in his seven years as a head coach on the high school level.Graduating with a B.S.E. in 1982 and an M.S.E. in 1986 from Central Arkansas, Keopple began his coaching career there in 1982 as a gradu-ate assistant working with the offensive line. He spent 14 years with the Bears, tutoring the offensive line the entire time and serving as offensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator from 1990-95. During his tenure at UCA, the Bears won three NAIA national championships and 10 consecu-tive conference championships from 1983-92 in the former Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference (AIC). A native of Little Rock Arkansas, Keopple is the son of Hall of Fame high school coach C.W. Keopple. A 1976 graduate of Parkview High School, he played on the 1974 and 1976 state championship teams and was an all-state and super team selection his senior season. During his playing days at Central Arkansas, Keopple was a member of two conference championship teams and was an honorable mention selec-tion on both the All-NAIA District 17 and All-AIC teams. His senior season he was selected team captain by his teammates, and the Bears were the regular season No. 1 team in the country with an undefeated record, advancing to the national playoffs. Keopple has been a part of 18 championship teams as a player and coach. He is married to the former Marsha Lee Belew from Beebe and has two adult children.

Landon Keopple enters into his 11th sea-son on the Southern Arkansas football

staff, and enters into his ninth season as Offensive Coordinator. In his time as the Offensive Coordinator, Keopple has designed and developed one of the nation’s most prolific and balanced offenses. With Keopple in charge of the offense since 2011, the Muleriders have averaged 34.1 points per game and 452.2 yards of total offense per game with 289.4 yards coming through the air, and 162.8 yards on the ground. Additionally, Keopple’s offense has produced 30 all-conference players, nine all-region recipients, and five all-Americans. Last season, the Mulerider offense led the Great American Conference in total yards at 405.0 per game, while ranking second in passing offense (273.2 ypg) and fourth in scoring offense (28.2 ppg). SAU’s passing offense was the 22nd best in all of Division II Football last fall and the Muleriders led the conference and finished seventh in the country in third-down conver-sion with a 49.4% success rate. From 2014-2017, Keopple’s offensive attack has led the Great American Conference (GAC) and ranked in the Top-25 nationally in Total Offense with over 5,000 yards gained each season. Keopple’s offense has amassed over 5,000 yards of Total Offense in five of the eight years with him as the OC. In 2017, the Muleriders ranked 21st in Division II in Total Offense (458.4 ypg). The two seasons prior, SAU ranked 20th in DII averaging 469.8 ypg in 2016 and 471.3 ypg, respectively. The best overall year offensively for the Muleriders came in 2014 as Keopple’s offense ranked 10th nationally going for 505.4 ypg. The recent success of the Mulerider offense can be directly attributed to quarterback play. Under Keopple’s guidance as the quarterback’s coach and offensive coordinator, SAU has turned itself into “Quarterback U” as the last three starting QBs dating back to 2012 have broken numerous school records and have been lauded with all-conference, all-region and national acclaim. The first among the trio of standout QBs under Keopple was two-time All-GAC QB, Tyler Sykora. In his three years as a starter, Sykora steadily improved each season and ended his career at SAU holding 17 school records, many of which were career marks. Following Sykora was Si Blackshire, who was the Muleriders’ signal-caller for the 2014 season. In that year, Blackshire was named to the All-GAC Honorable Mention team as he led the league and ranked ninth individually in DII in Total Offense at 331.1 ypg.

Most-recently, Keopple has kept the successful QB trend going with Barrett Renner taking over as a redshirt freshman in 2015. Renner enters his senior season as a three-time All-GAC honoree with first-team acclaim twice. In his first season as starting QB, Renner was the GAC’s Freshman of the Year, as well as an all-region selection and regional finalist for the Harlon Hill Award (DII Player of the Year). That year, he set SAU single-season records in Passing TDs (33), Completions (252), Attempts (405), Completion Percentage (62.2), and Total Offense (3,713). At the completion of his junior season, Renner established five career passing records and bettered his own season records for Passing TDs (35 | 2017), Completions (279 | 2016), Attempts (430 | 2016), and Completion Percentage (66.7% | 2017). As a senior, Renner became just the second passer collegiately in the state of Arkansas to throw for over 13,000 yards in a career as he finished a stellar campaign in Magnolia with 13,027 yards with 119 career passing touchdowns which is also the second-most among collegiate Arkansas quarterbacks. Prior to his position at SAU, Keopple was at Ouachita Baptist Univer-sity where he spent the 2007 and 2008 season as a graduate assistant in charge of the wide receivers. While at OBU, he coached All-America receiver, Julius Pruitt, who most-recently played with the Arizona Rattlers of the Arena Football League (AFL). Upon graduating from OBU, Pruitt was signed as undrafted free agent by the Miami Dolphins. In his time at OBU, Keopple also helped the Tigers to their first winning season in 25 years. Before OBU, Keopple spent the 2006 season at Arkansas High School in Texarkana, working as an assistant coach under his father, current Southern Arkansas Head Coach Bill Keopple. While there, (Landon) Keopple worked with the receivers at Arkansas High and helped guide the team to the 6A state championship. As a prep player, Keopple was an Arkansas All-State quarterback at Fayetteville High School in 2000. Afterwards, he attended the University of Central Arkansas in the fall of 2001 on a golf scholarship before transfer-ring to the University of Tulsa in the spring of 2002. While at Tulsa, Keopple was a three-year letterman in football and served as team captain his senior season of 2005 when Tulsa won the Conference USA championship against Central Florida. The Hurricane defeated Fresno State in the Liberty Bowl that same year, and Keopple also played in the 2003 Humanitarian Bowl against Georgia Tech. Keopple received his B.B.A. in accounting with a minor in economics from Tulsa in 2006 and a Masters in sports administration from Henderson State in 2009. Landon and his wife Dana have a daughter, Kinslee and a son, Knox.

Chad Adams

Defensive CoordinatorSecond SeasonFort Hays State (2002)

Chad Adams enters into his second season as the defensive coordinator on the Southern Arkansas football coaching staff.

In his first season in Magnolia, Adams orchestrated a Mulerider defense that played a pivotal role in Southern Arkansas jumping out to one of the best starts to a season in program history. Under his leadership, the SAU defense ranked third in the Great American Conference in total defense which was highlighted by a front seven responsible for the second-best rushing defense in the league as it allowed just 120.0 yards per game on the ground. Adams’ defense held Top 35 marks nationally in Defensive Touchdowns (22nd | 3), Total Defense (24th | 306.6 ypg), Scoring Defense (27th | 19.9 ppg), Rushing Defense (31st | 120.0 ypg), Turnovers Gained (31st | 23), and Tackles for Loss (34th | 7.5 per game). Of those three defensive touchdowns, two came in the Southern Arkansas’ road win at No. 7 Harding as the Muleriders returned a pair of fumbles for touchdowns to upset the nationally-ranked Bisons in Week 2. Seven players from the 2018 defense received postseason accolades from the Great Ameri-can Conference, including a pair of first-team honorees. Both of those players captured all-region honors, while one was named an All-American as well as a finalist for the Gene Upshaw Award which is given annually to the Division II’s Lineman of the Year. Adams came to SAU after a two-year stint as defensive coordinator at Southeastern University in Lakeland, Fla. While there, Adams helped lead the Fire to a 15-5 overall record, a pair of conference championships, and consecutive appearances in the NAIA National Championship Series playoffs. In his first year as the DC at Southeastern in 2016, Adams’ defensive unit led The Sun Confer-ence in Scoring Defense (18.8 ppg), Rushing Defense (87.6 ypg), 3rd-Down Conversion % (26.9%), 4th-Down Conversion % (17.6%), and Sacks per Game (3.7). In terms of NAIA national stat rankings, Adams’ initial Fire defense ranked third in Rushing Defense and ninth in Total Defense (304.1 ypg). As a team, the Fire ended the 2016 season ranked No. 18 in the final NAIA national poll. In 2017, Adams’ defense ranked among the upper echelon in the 20-member Mid-South Conference. His overall defense ranked sixth in the league (327.9 ypg), while his scoring defense was fourth (22.9 ppg). Nationally, the Fire ended the season ranked No. 10 as a team, while those aforementioned defensive stat categories ranked 15th and 24th, respectively. Prior to his time at Southeastern, Adams headed up the defense at a familiar foe of the Mul-eriders as he spent three seasons at Ouachita Baptist. From, 2013-2015, Adams’ helped the Tigers go 24-8 overall and 24-7 in the Great American Conference. In 2014, Ouachita went undefeated in the regular season (10-0) en route to claiming their first outright conference title, and making their first NCAA Division II Playoff appearance as well after earning a first-round bye. Statistically, Adams’ defenses at Ouachita ranked among the top-four in the GAC each year in scoring defense. Ouachita is not the only current GAC-member school that Adams has guided their defensive efforts. Prior to a year-long stop as the assistant head coach and co-defensive coordinator at Hutchinson Community College in 2012, Adams spent four seasons as the DC at Northwestern Okla-homa State from 2008-2011, and helped the Rangers begin their transition from NAIA to NCAA DII. Additionally, five years prior to being the DC at NWOSU, Adams was there as a graduate assistant for the 2003 season that saw the Rangers finish runner-up in NAIA after falling in that year’s National Championship game. In his time in Alva as the defensive coordinator, Adams helped the Rangers capture a pair of conference titles and also make two NAIA playoff appearances. Adams’ additional coaching experience has seen him spend time at Fort Scott Community College (2006-07), the University of Central Missouri (2005), and Coffeyville Community College (2004). Overall for his career, Adams has appeared in six national playoffs and coached in five bowl games.

Boomer Cunningham

Offensive LineFourth SeasonCentral Arkansas (2009)

Robert “Boomer” Cunningham enters into his fourth season as a member of the SAU Football coaching staff where he will serve as the of-

fensive line coach and recruiting coordinator for the Muleriders. The leader in the GAC in Total Offense each of his first three years at SAU, Cunningham oversaw a very young, but talented offensive line group in 2018 that helped pave the way for an offense which led the Great American Conference in total yards at 405.0 per game, while ranking second in passing offense (273.2 ypg | 22nd DII) and fourth in scoring offense (28.2 ppg). The Muleriders led the conference and finished seventh in the country in third-down conversion with a 49.4% success rate. Additionally, Cunningham’s offensive line helped SAU average the second-most first downs per game in the league at 21.2 and the group allowed just 19 sacks. On the ground, the unit blocked for a rushing attack that totaled over 1,500 yards at 3.7 yards per carry. Previously, Cunningham’s 2016 O-Line blocked for a running game that rushed for the most yards in a season since 2005 as the Muleriders ran for just over 2,100 yards. The rushing attack followed that up with over 1,800 yards on the ground in 2017. Through the air, Cunningham’s O-Line has provided protection for one of the top passing attacks in the GAC in recent history with a SAU signal-caller throwing for over 3,000 yards for the fourth-straight year in 2017. Additionally, the offensive line under Cunningham’s direction yielded just six sacks the entire season. That mark was the best in the GAC and second-best in all of DII. Individually, Cunningham has coached four All-GAC honorees in Colby Geissen (2017), Mark Jenkins (2016), Chris Paul (2016) and Mason Grantz (2018). Prior to coming to SAU, Cunningham was at LaGrange College where he spent one season as the offensive line coach/run game coordinator. In that year with the Panthers, Cunningham helped shore up an offensive line that allowed 42 sacks the year prior, to just allowing 25 in the 2015 season. The noticeable improvement in pass protection was bol-stered by the fact that the line was very young as it featured four starting underclassmen. Before LaGrange, Cunningham coached at Division I FCS-member, the University of Central Arkansas for six seasons. During his first three seasons, Cunningham served as an assistant offensive line and offensive quality control coach with the Bears. Following the 2011 season, Cunningham remained as an assistant offensive line coach, but added responsibilities as the recruiting coordinator and director of football operations. Cunningham would serve in those roles for three seasons from 2012-2014. In his time at UCA, Cunningham helped coach a pair of standout offensive linemen in Cole Caruthers (2014) and Corey Howard (2012). Both Caruthers and Howard were All-Southland Conference First-Team selections as well as being named as the Offensive Lineman of the Year in the SLC. Both also went on to earn All-America honors from various FCS Football media outlets. Prior to joining the coaching ranks, Cunningham began his collegiate playing career at Division II-member Missouri Southern State University. After one season with the Lions, Cunningham transferred to UCA where he played three seasons (two as a starter) along the offensive line. Cunningham also handled deep snapping duties for both the Lions and the Bears.

for Moore as a full-time assistant after serving the 2018 season as a graduate assistant coach. As he did in his first season, Moore will continue coaching the SAU defensive backs in addition to his duties as the team’s certified strength & conditioning coach. In 2018, Moore coached a secondary unit, which included an All-GAC performer, that was a part of a Mulerider defense that finished third in the GAC in total defense at 306.6 yards per game which ranked 24th in Division II. SAU also owned the fourth-best scoring defense in the GAC at 19.9 points per game and allowed less than 187 yards per game through the air. During his three years in Stuart, he served as the liaison to col-lege recruiters. Additionally, Lombardo was selected to coach in the prestigious North/South Florida All-Star Football Shrine Bowl. Lombardo also spent two years as an assistant head football coach and defensive coordinator at Duluth High School in Duluth, Georgia. His coaching career started at Spanish River High School in Boca Raton, FL where he was an assistant coach in charge of the defensive backs and outside linebackers and he also served as the school’s head weight lifting coach. The team reached the Class 6A State playoffs for the first time in school history and he was among the nominees for FHSAA Assistant Football Coach of the Year. Lombardo graduated from the University of West Alabama after obtaining a football scholarship from the Tigers. He played in the competitive Gulf South Conference and was voted UWA’s Most Improved Defensive Back in the spring of 1992. He graduated from football powerhouse Pensacola High School (Florida) where he was a three-year starter. In all three of those seasons, PHS was ranked #1 in the State. Most notable in Lombardo’s high school career was PHS shutting out Emmitt Smith; the only time in his high school career that he didn’t score a touchdown during a game. Lombardo has three children; Gabriella, 20, Anthony, 18, and Emma, 16.

The Muleriders’ ground game in 2018 was a key part of an SAU offense that finished the campaign ranked seventh in the country in third-down conversion percentage at 49.4%. Nicks joined the Muleriders after finishing his collegiate playing days as a quarterback at Bethel University (McKenzie, Tenn.). Prior to his time at Bethel, Nicks spent two seasons at Arkansas State University (Jonesboro, Ark.) where he played under SAU Sports Hall of Fame inductee Steve Roberts in 2011 and Hugh Freeze in 2012. Prior to his time in college, Nicks played his prep career at perennial powerhouse Pulaski Academy (Little Rock, Ark.). BETHANY, Okla. – (RV) Southern Arkansas opened the 2019 NCAA Division II sea-son on Thursday night against Southern Nazarene by making a statement at the line scrimmage. The Muleriders, under 11th-year head coach Bill Keopple, won the battle of the trenches on both sides of the football as the 102nd team in program history picked up a 34-14 season-opening win over the Crimson Storm in Great American Conference action. SAU rushed for 323 yards on 50 attempts, and held the SNU ground game to just 18 yards on 24 attempts. In the win, the Muleriders (1-0, 1-0 GAC) totaled 416 yards on 69 plays at 6.03 yards per play and held the football for almost 38 minutes. Defensively, SAU was just as dominant as the Crimson Storm managed just 130 total yards of offense on 42 plays, while recording just five first downs. Behind the stout run game was a trio of backs that helped carry the load. Redshirt freshman Kor'Davion Washington, in his first collegiate action, carried a team-high 16 times for 109 yards with a long rush of 32 yards. Redshirt senior SirCharles Perkins found the end zone twice in the victory behind 103 rushing yards on 15 attempts. Redshirt sophomore Dennis Daniels finished a yard shy of the hitting the century mark on 13 rushes with an explosive 36-yard touchdown run that put SAU up 14-0 with 3:20 to play in the opening quarter. Daniels did catch a pass for 17 yards as he went over 115 all-purpose yards in the win. The first 15 minutes of action set the tone for the Muleriders as SAU posted a pair of scoring drives that combined for 141 yards on 18 plays, while taking 9:59 to do so. Southern Arkansas opened their season with a methodical 12-play, 74-yard drive that took 6:57 and included 11 rushing attempts. In his first career start, junior quarterback Hayden Mallory was an efficient 9-of-15 passing for 86 yards and a touchdown; an impressive 39-yard strike to redshirt senior Jared Lancaster late in the first half that put the Muleriders in control up 31-7. Not to be lost in the scoring on Thursday night was sophomore place kicker Austin Wilkerson's pair of field goals which included a 29-yard make early in the second quarter that made it a two-possession game following the Crimson Storm's first touchdown of the game. Midway through the third quarter, Wilker-son connected on a 35-yard attempt to push the SAU lead to 27 points. Defensively, senior Lorenzo Watkins recorded six tackles, including two for loss that totaled 16 yards. Five other Muleriders posted at least three stops. After gaining 18 rushing yards in the first quarter, Southern Nazarene would not gain another yard rushing against the Mulerider front seven over the next three quarters. Southern Arkansas improves to 8-0 all-time against Southern Nazarene and to 6-5 in season openers under Keopple.

GAMe noteS

MAGNOLIA, Ark. – Most of the 5,437 fans in attendance for Saturday evening's Great American Conference matchup between (RV) Southern Arkansas and Oklahoma Baptist have little recollection of many of the previous 199 wins inside Wilkins Stadium at Rip Powell Field. But the chances are that most won't forget the 200th victory at the venue. With four seconds to play in regulation and after the SAU offense drove 56 yards in a mere 28 seconds, sophomore place kicker Austin Wilkerson rewarded the Mulerider faithful by sneaking in a career-long 48-yard field goal at-tempt into a slight south wind as time expired to give the Muleriders a thrilling 30-28 victory over the Bison. The win pushes Southern Arkansas' Division II-best home winning streak to 17 games. Leading 20-14 heading into the fourth quarter of play, the Muleriders (2-0, 2-0 GAC) capped an impressive 14-play drive that took 6:19 and covered 92 yards with a two-yard rushing plunge by redshirt freshman Kor'Davion Washing-ton; the first touchdown of his collegiate career. The Wilkerson extra point with 10:36 to play in the game put SAU out front 27-14, but Oklahoma Baptist responded twice down the stretch which would lead to the last-second heroics. On that scoring drive, junior quarterback Hayden Mallory went 4-for-5 passing for 66 yards, including a pair of tosses to redshirt sophomore Micah Small which totaled 34 yards and a 25-yard completion to redshirt senior Michael Ingram on 3rd-and-8 which moved the Muleriders to a goal-to-go opportunity. Following unsuccessful drives from both offenses, the Bison used an eight-play, 45-yard drive (2:05) and a five-play, 52-yard drive (1:10) which sandwiched a turnover-on-downs by the Muleriders with 2:44 to play. Both scoring drives for Oklahoma Baptist ended with signal caller Preston Haire finding Joshua Cornell for scoring strikes of 23 and 24 yards, respectively. Now trailing for the second time in the game (Oklahoma Baptist opened scoring with 9:50 to play in the first quarter), Southern Arkansas' potential game winning drive started with 1:34 remaining and all three timeouts from their own 35-yard line. After three consecutive completions from Mallory totaling 25 yards, an interception on 1st and 10 from the Bison 40-yard line appeared to all but end it for the Muleriders. However, the Southern Arkansas defense rose to the challenge and forced a three-and-out, while using all three timeouts to preserve what amounted to 31 seconds when the final drive began. Redshirt junior linebacker DeMarcus Pegue, the team's leading tackler with nine stops in the victory, recorded two tackles on that final drive to help give the Muleriders a fighting chance. After an illegal block on the punt return, Southern Arkansas started from their own 13. Mallory went to work as he connected with redshirt sophomore Dennis Daniels for 20 yards on the first play and after clocking it, he connected with freshman OB Jones for 15 yards up to the SAU 48. However, on the play, the Bison were called for a face mask penalty which put the ball at the 37-yard line of Oklahoma Baptist with under 10 seconds to play. Needing one play to give Wilkerson a shot, Mallory found redshirt senior running back SirCharles Perkins underneath for an important six yards. Perkins would get out of bounds which would lead to the aforementioned fireworks from the left hash following a timeout by the Bison in an attempt to ice the try. The game winner from the Dallas, Texas, native was his third of the night and fifth of the season as he connected from 19-yards (2nd | 5:33) and 26-yards (3rd | 5:49) earlier in the contest. The length of the field goal is tied for the sixth-longest in program history and it is the furthest made attempt since a 48-yard make from Austin Shoemake in 2013 (at Southeastern Oklahoma). Additionally, it's the first three field goal game by an SAU kicker since Brad Grems was successful with three makes against Ouachita in 2016. Defensively, the Muleriders held the Bison to just 129 yards on the ground and under 400 yards total as the visiting offense ran 79 total plays with 119 of those total yards coming in the fourth quarter comeback effort. SAU recorded 8.5 tackles for loss and was led in that category by all-conference defensive tackle Antonio Washington who finished with 3.5 tackles for loss totaling 13 yards. The Marshall, Texas, native added eight tackles, three quarterback hurries and two pass breakups as he posed as an unsolved problem to the Bison front throughout the night. Sophomore Brock Floyd added seven tackles and senior Lorenzo Watkins followed with six stops. True freshman Shakey Robinson picked off his first career pass as he stepped in front of an attempt by Haire with under three minutes to play in the first half. Career-highs in completions (22), attempts (33), yards (350), and touchdowns (2) from Mallory played a huge role in the Mulerider offense's success in the win as did his protection which did not allow a single sack. His top target was redshirt senior Jared Lancaster who hauled in seven passes for 131 yards including a 64-yard touchdown pass. Small added four receptions for 83 yards, both career-highs, and a touchdown. Nine players caught a pass from Mallory. Southern Arkansas finished with 534 total yards of offense on 73 plays at 7.3 yards per play. A week after rushing for over 320 yards, it was the aerial attack that was the highlight of the night. Notable for the offense was a 9-of-16 success rate on third down as well as a 15.9 yards per completion clip. Washington finished with a team-high 80 yards on 12 carries which included a career-long rush of 51 yards on a third-quarter scoring drive that ended with Wilkerson' second field goal of the game. Saturday night's walk-off winner was the first via kick for the Muleriders since the 2014 home opener when Dylan Nowak pushed through an extra point attempt following a Si Blackshire to Aaron Johnson touchdown connection in the back corner of the south end zone with no time remaining. The successful extra point was the difference in SAU's 30-29 win over Southeastern Oklahoma State.

Southern Arkansas moves to 8-3 in home openers under 11th-year head coach Bill Keopple. The Muleriders have won eight-straight home openers dating back to 2012.
