So much good.

The Duluth Superior area is a wonderful place to make good things happen. From our natural beauty to incredible levels of engagement, there is so much love for this place. It is rewarding to work with all of our communities because of our generous donors, our committed grant recipients, our inspirational scholarship winners and our dedicated partners.

So much good.

In this report, you will see what we mean. We share stories of scholarships that have helped our future generation take next steps—and sometimes leaps—in education and life, recognizing that they have so

much potential. We chronicle the work of our Opportunity Rising Initiative, providing so much care to narrow the gap in life experiences, relationships and success—a gap created by income and opportunity differences that is holding back our region and country.

You will read about efforts to support education and community and how we work together, creating so many strong connections and healthy tomorrows. For fifteen years now, that last issue has been significantly improved locally and nationally through Speak Your Peace: The Civility Project. We are proud to say Speak Your Peace is still going strong and, as many have told us, is needed now more than ever.

So much good.

This work has generated impressive numbers. As we celebrate our 35th year in 2018, we have distributed $53.7 million in grants and scholarships and maintain more than 400 funds, each with its own charitable purpose. That is truly a track record befitting the generosity and civic spirit of our people and region.

From the Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation, our Board of Trustees, our staff, our partners and our grant and scholarship recipients, I want to thank you for making it possible. You dared to dream. Then you delivered to make dreams come true. We celebrate and express our appreciation for what you have given our communities.

So much good.

John Devinck reads his morning paper early—around 5 a.m. It was all he could do not to wake his wife Kay, when he opened the paper to an article about the number of children in the Twin Ports area experiencing poverty. He wanted to start helping instantly, but he waited for Kay to wake up before sharing what he had learned.

“As soon as she read the article, she called the Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation (DSACF) to find out what we could do,” says John.

Right now, 1,038 children in Superior and 3,346 children in Duluth experience poverty every day. That means kids we all know are living in what is called the opportunity gap. They face barriers that include transportation, housing, health care, out-of-school

programming, child care, job training and more. Those barriers act to widen the gap between the opportunities available to them and their peers.

Kay’s phone call was the beginning of the couple’s involvement in Opportunity Rising— a DSACF initiative to raise awareness and start closing the opportunity gap for all our kids in Superior and in Duluth. The goal is to come together community to community, neighbor to neighbor, organization to organization to increase opportunities so that all of our kids can reach their full potential.

“What makes us so passionate about Opportunity Rising is that it’s local,” says Kay. “We can do something that matters and makes a difference right here.”

Kay and John have been with the Opportunity Rising initiative since its beginnings.

“Our hope is that there will be no more poverty or unnecessary stress on families and children in our community,” says Kay.

“People we talk to about the opportunity gap can’t believe the number of kids experiencing poverty and they all want to help instantaneously just like we did,” says John. “We have to get the word out!” (Read more at opportunityrising.org)

good can change everything L e a r n m o r e a t dsacommunityfoundation.com 5

How does an architectural firm make a difference in a community?

“As a company, our philosophy is to serve communities from a broader view,” says LHB Chief Executive Officer, Bill Bennett. “It is important to build lasting relationships and connections, not just come in, do a project and leave. That’s one of the reasons we set up the LHB Foundation Fund.”

At the end of 2012, LHB was in the position of having additional funds for philanthropic initiatives and turned to the Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation (DSACF) for direction about how the company could best use those funds to give back to the community.

“When you grow as a company it is important to give back to the community that allowed you to grow, especially when so many families are connected to and reliant on that community,” says Bill. “We looked hard at where we could do the most good and knew that the DSACF had an exceptional reputation. The donor-advised fund the Community Foundation helped us set up allowed us to invest when we had the resources and to think about what was important in the longer view—to the community and to us as a company.”

The LHB Foundation Fund provides grants that are related to the work LHB and its clients do, as well as the philanthropic passions of its employees. Grants help fund scholarships and

projects related to students studying science, technology, engineering or math (STEM) and architecture, as well as worthwhile initiatives such as affordable housing.

“The Community Foundation takes on a broad array of challenges that LHB would probably not be involved with, but that are critical to the community,” says Bill. “We are humbled by the work they do. To be able to add our broader support to make a more impactful difference in the community means so much to us as a company of diverse individuals all connected to the region we call our home.”

For Tony and Sharon Yung giving back is central to the way they are raising their three children—Julien (16), Aiden (14) and Elliot (11).

“We encourage giving,” says Tony. “We want our children to know that there are always people who don’t have it as good as we do.”

“We also want our kids to be intentional about wanting to give,” says Sharon.

As examples to their three kids, the Yungs have made a generous commitment to the Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation (DSACF) Community Leaders Fund. This unrestricted fund allows the Community Foundation to distribute funds to projects that align with the Yungs’ beliefs.

“We all need people along the way in our lives,” says Tony. “None of us makes it alone.”

“Tony and I are both first generation children of Chinese American immigrants,” says Sharon. “We grew up in families where our parents worked hard. They couldn’t speak the language. We saw people in our communities reach out as mentors and make a difference to our parents.”

The Yungs both do hands-on volunteer work, but also believe in giving to the DSACF.One of the DSACF projects the Yungs are especially inspired by is the Opportunity Rising initiative. The initiative’s purpose is to bring people from all backgrounds, incomes, ethnicities, beliefs and neighborhoods together to do the work needed to provide real and meaningful equal opportunities for every child

in Duluth and Superior. (Find out more at

opportunityrising.org.)

“Opportunity Rising is affecting children who will be here another 80 to 90 years,” says Tony. “It will have a lifelong impact.”

“People are re-engaging with our youth in a positive way because of Opportunity Rising,” says Sharon.

Both Tony and Sharon want to be examples of agents of social change for their children and for their community.

“The Community Foundation is the entity that embodies our community and provides the mechanism for us to do good,” says Tony.

Imagine that for reasons beyond your control you haven’t had access to the same opportunities to succeed in school as your friends. Circumstances may have made it almost impossible to get good grades. You may have even made some bad decisions along the way. Now, you’re a junior or senior in high school, you’re trying hard and your grades are really improving. You have the talent and potential to go to a trade school or college after high school, but there isn’t enough money and with your past grades you won’t qualify for an academic scholarship.

You are the kind of kid Ken Schoen and his late wife Concetta had in mind when they set up the Kenneth and Concetta Schoen Scholarship Fund in 2008—the kid who is trying hard and starting to hit their stride late in their academic career.

When Ken and his wife met they were both probation officers working for the department of corrections, where they saw firsthand kids who didn't have the same advantages as others.

“As probation officers we realized there were kids not doing well who had a lot of potential,” says Ken. “Had their situation been better, their capacity would have been apparent for everyone to see.”

The Kenneth and Concetta Schoen Scholarship has been awarded each year to one student and is renewable for four years, assuming proper academic progress is maintained. Last year, two students were equally qualified and in need, so Ken doubled his commitment and now intends to support an additional student each year, rather than later via a legacy to the Foundation.

“I know the Community Foundation’s Opportunity Rising initiative is working to address the opportunity gap in Duluth and Superior and that our scholarship fits in well with its goals,” says Ken. “I read Robert Putnam’s book, Our Kids: The American Dream

in Crisis. Putnam made clear what Connie and I saw years ago—there is an absence of opportunity in the lives of many young people and when you provide that opportunity you can make all the difference in the world to them.” (Read more at opportunityrising.org)

Wisconsin’s Madeline Island is a place of peace, friendship and family for Ted and Dawn Michael. It’s why the couple formed their Michael Madeline Island Fund. The fund allows programs and nonprofits in the Madeline Island area to apply for grants. The Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation (DSACF) Apostle Islands Area Community Fund advisory board then determines which organizations will receive funding.

Ted and Dawn’s love for Madeline Island has spanned many wonderful years. Ted’s grandfather bought a cottage on the island in the 40s and Ted has spent a good portion of his summers there since he was five. Playing tennis with his cousins, learning to water-ski and exploring the island are memories he cherishes.

Dawn has accompanied him for the past 30 years and shares his love for the cottage, the island and the people who live there.

“We established our fund for the public good of the island,” says Ted. “We really appreciate the Community Foundation’s work in publicizing requests for funding and determining where those funds can best be used.”

“Because Ted and I only spend summers on the island, we are not connected enough to know some of the important needs of the community,” says Dawn. “We feel confident in the Foundation’s comprehensive vetting process.”

Giving in large and small ways is part of Dawn and Ted’s life. When the couple is living on Madeline Island, Dawn grows a huge vegetable and flower garden. Each week when her flowers are in bloom Dawn creates arrangements for the church.

The couple is involved in a number of philanthropic community programs and organizations on Madeline Island.

“It is simple,” says Ted. “We feel a need to do our part and more because we are able.”
