╉PLYWOOD╊ Plywood as a building material is very widely used due to its many useful

properties. It is an economical, factory-produced sheet of wood with precise

dimensions that does not warp or crack with changes in atmospheric

moisture.

Ply is an engineered wood product made from three or more 'plies' or thin

sheets of wood. These are glued together to form a thicker, flat sheet. The

logs used to make plywood as a building material are prepared by steaming

or dipping in hot water. They are then fed into a lathe machine, which peels

the log into thin plies of wood. Each ply is usually between 1 and 4mm thick.

USES OF PLYWOOD AS A BUILDING MATERIAL

Plywood has a huge range of used within the construction industry. Some of

its most common uses are:

To make light partition or external walls

To make formwork, or a mould for wet concrete

To make furniture, especially cupboards, kitchen cabinets, and office

tables

As part of flooring systems

For packaging

To make light doors and shutters

HOW PLY IS MADE

Plywood consists of the face, core, and back. The face is the surface that is visible after

installation, while the core lies between the face and back. Thin layers of wood veneers are

glued together with a strong adhesive. This is mainly a phenol or urea formaldehyde resin.

Each layer is oriented with its grain perpendicular to the adjacent layer. Plywood as a

building material is generally formed into large sheets. It may also be curved for use in

ceilings, aircraft, or ship building.

WHICH WOOD IS PLY MADE OF?

Plywood is manufactured from softwood, hardwood, or both. The hardwoods used are ash,

maple, oak, and mahogany.Douglas fir is the most popular softwood for making plywood,

although pine, redwood, and cedar are common. Composite plywood can also be

engineered with a core of solid timber pieces or particleboard, with a wood veneer for the

face and back. Composite plywood is preferable when thick sheets are required.

Additional materials can be added to the face and back veneers to improve durability.

These include plastic, resin-impregnated paper, fabric, Formica, or even metal. These are

added as a thin outer layer to resist moisture, abrasion and corrosion. They also facilitate

better binding of paint and dyes.

PROPERTIES

High Strength: Plywood has the structural strength of the wood it is made from. This is in

addition to the properties obtained from its laminated design. The grains of each veneer

are laid at 90 degree angles to each other. This makes the whole sheet resistant to splitting,

especially when nailed at the edges. It also gives the whole sheet uniform strength for

increased stability. Furthermore, plywood has a higher strength to weight ratio as

compared to cut lumber. This makes it ideal for flooring, webbed beams, and shear walls.

High panel shear: Plywood is made with an odd number of layers, making it tough to

bend. The angle at which the veneer grains are laid against each other may be varied from

90 degrees. Each veneer can be laid at a 45 or 30 degree angle to the next one, increasing the plywood╆s strength in every direction┻ This cross lamination increases the panel shear of plywood, important in bracing panels and fabricated beams.

Flexibility: Unlike cut timber, plywood can be manufactured to fit every requirement. The

thickness of each veneer can vary from a few millimeters to several inches. The number of

veneers used also ranges from three to several, increasing the thickness of the sheet. The

extra layers add more strength to the plywood. Thinner veneers are used to increase

flexibility for use in ceilings and paneling.

Moisture resistance: The type of adhesive used to bind the veneers makes the plywood

resistant to moisture and humidity. A layer of paint or varnish can also increase resistance

to water damage. These types of veneers are suitable for exterior use such as cladding,

sheds, and in marine construction. They are also suited for holding concrete while it sets.

Moisture resistance is important in interior applications as well, including on floors. The

cross lamination ensures the veneers do not warp, shrink, or expand when exposed to

water and extreme temperature.

Chemical resistance: Plywood treated with preservative does not corrode when exposed

to chemicals. This makes it suitable for chemical works and cooling towers.

Impact resistance: Plywood has high tensile strength, derived from the cross lamination

of panels. This distributes force over a larger area, reducing tensile stress. Plywood is

therefore able to withstand overloading by up to twice its designated load. This is critical

during short-term seismic activity or high winds. It is also useful in flooring and concrete

formwork.

Fire resistance: Plywood can be treated with a fire resistant chemical coating. More

commonly, it is combined with non combustible materials such as plasterboard or fibrous

cement. This makes it ideal for use in fire resistant structures.

Insulation: Plywood has high thermal and sound insulation. This makes it a useful

insulating material for flooring, ceilings, roofing, and wall cladding. Insulation offered by

plywood can greatly reduce heating and cooling costs.

There are a variety of ways in which plywood is classified and these classifications are

usually based on the different aspects of plywood such as the wood used, the number of

plies it has, its suitability for indoor and outdoor use, its grading as per quality

specifications, and its intended uses.

MR (Moisture Resistant) Grade Plywood (low Quality)

MR stands for 'Moisture Resistant' plywood┻ It╆s also known as Commercial plywood and is the most commonly used material for making home and office furniture┻ It╆s an Interior grade and meant for making furniture that will be used indoors.

Water can damage MR grade plywood

Can bend or sag when longer pieces are used.

Difficult to judge the quality of a plywood sheet.

Plywood usually needs additional enhancements.

The edges also need to be covered with suitable pieces of wood.

Costlier compared to block boards, or particle boards.

The adhesives used may be ecologically damaging.

Not considered as strong as solid wood.

People often think Moisture Resistant means waterproof. However this is not the case.

Note that MR (Moisture resistant) is of a lesser quality and cost compared to BWR

grade. While it true that MR plywood can resist a certain degree of moisture and humidity,

it certainly cannot be called waterproof.

MR is interior grade plywood useful for making indoor furniture.

BWR (Boiling Water Resistant) Grade Plywood (Standard Quality)

The acronym BWR stands for 'Boiling Water Resistant'┻ It╆s an exterior grade waterproof

plywood, that is better than MR grade plywood. It is the preferred choice of material for

making those pieces of furniture that are likely to get wet. Example, Kitchen cabinets and

other Kitchen furniture. It's also costlier than MR grade ply.

Note: There is also another grade known as BWP, which is more commonly used with block

boards. Similar to BWR grade plywood, BWP block boards are also of an exterior grade

having waterproofing qualities.

The acronym BWP stands for 'Boiling Water Proof', while BWR grade means 'Boiling Water

Resistant' plywood.

The general naming convention used in the industry is that BWR grading is used for

marking plywood, while its counterpart BWP grade is used in the case of Block boards.

Technically speaking there is not much difference between these two terms. The quality

tests on BWR grade plywood sheets, as well as BWP grade block boards are quite similar.

The glue used in the construction of both these types is synthetic plastic resin (phenol

formaldehyde) which is considered better than Urea formaldehyde resins used in

commercial MR grade plywood sheets.

If a board is marked with BWR it means that it is a waterproof exterior grade plywood, and

if it is marked BWP then it should ideally mean that it is an exterior grade waterproof block

board.

Both BWP and BWR grades are widely used in the construction of furniture that is likely to

get some exposure to water. Hence it is a preferred choice of material for making kitchen

cabinets and other kitchen furniture.

BWP (Boiling Water Proof) Grade Plywood (Premium Quality)

╉MARINE PLYWOOD╊

As the name indicates, this type of plywood is meant for marine applications i.e. where

flowing water or excessive exposure to water is there. Technically, this is called BWP

(Boiling Water Proof) plywood. In trade circles, this is also called 710 plywood, named so

after the IS standards for this type of plywood (BIS 710). This is the true water-proof

plywood and is made using water-proof phenolic resins. For home and office purposes, this

type of plywood is rarely used, as these to be the most expensive as well.

Commonly used for marine applications such as in the construction of boats and ships. Has

better resistance to water than any other type of plywood. Indian Standard specifications

for marine ply are detailed in the IS document number IS: 710.

1.3 GREENPLY GOLD PLYWOOD (BWP)

Green Gold Plywood is an exterior grade plywood with a fully composed core and panel.

Calibrated through QUARDA PRO technology. The product is borer & termite proof. This

Boiling Water Proof plywood and CE certified conforming to E1 Standards for Emission.

1.4 GREENPLY OPTIMA RED (BWP)

Optima Red BWR Grade Plywood is a preservative-treated, water-proof plywood,

manufactured from select hardwood timber as per IS: 303-1989.

The high strength hardwood veneer and the superior bonding strength of BWR type

2. HIGH QUALITY PLYWOOD

2.1 HUTCH GOLD (BWP)

Plywood comes in a lot of grades and uses. Though we can classify them easily. The best plywood standard marketed by all brands is the Marine Grade Plywood (BWP - Boiling Water Proof). This is generally used for exterior grade furniture or wherever the wood will come in contact with Water. This is also the costliest.

On the other hand, if you want plywood for interior furniture where you know there won't be too much water around, you could go for MR (Moisture resistant) Plywood which will suffices for interior applications.

Hutch Plywood is manufactured from thin veneer sheets. Plywood has been one of the most recognized and trusted wood building products for decades. 2.2 HUTCH PLY (BWR)

Benefits of Hutch Ply BWR

1. Good uniform strength

Plywood is a strong material, especially if its made from strong woods (hardwoods) instead

of the weaker woods (softwoods). The image above helps illustrate where this strength

comes from. The darker lines (or the tear lines) that you see on the face of the plywood is

called the wood grain pattern. It is quite easy to tear an individual veneer along the grain,

and equally difficult to tear it across the grain. This is why, whilst making plywood the

layers are arranged such that the grain pattern alternates in each layer, and this is what

makes plywood sheets such a strong material.

2. Can be used for making interior home furniture as well as exterior furniture.

Plywood is available in different grades such as MR grade (moisture resistant) for interior

use, and BWR grade (boiling water resistant) for exterior use. So furniture that is likely to

get wet, such as that in the kitchen or the garden can be made from BWR Water-proof

grade plywood, while elsewhere such as in the living room or bedroom, the cheaper MR

grade plywood can be used. This is a distinct advantage over cheaper materials such as

Particle board which is meant for indoor use only.

3. Available in large sizes compared to solid wood

Its very easy to get a nice looking uniformly thick 18 mm plywood sheet of size 8'x4' (8 feet

x 4 feet) from the market, but quite impractical to get solid flat wood of such a size (which

tree could be cut and how?). According to me, this is the most significant benefit that

plywood offers compared to solid wood, and that's the reason it became so popular since

its discovery. These large sized engineered plywood sheets allow for a variety of

applications that would be difficult to achieve using solid wood.

4. Economical use of wood by mixing various woods together

Some woods are prized for their beauty (teak, oak etc.) but are also costly. The veneers of

such woods can be used to form the surface layer of the plywood, while the inner layers

could be composed of other strong but cheaper woods. Such a mix and match is possible

while constructing plywood and the financial benefits accrued from this, can be passed on

to the end consumer.

5. Available in varieties such as flexible plywood.

Several interesting varieties have now come up in plywood. One of them is flexible plywood

(also known as bendy ply). It can be rolled up or bent to form curved surfaces and allows

for more applications in furniture and home decor.

6. Lesser wastage of wood

In comparison with the process of acquiring solid wood blocks, the plywood making

process has less wastage of material (tree logs), since both the rotary cut and slice cut

methods of making veneers do not produce too much waste. So we can utilize more part of

the tree logs in this way.

7. Versatile material that has many applications.

Plywood sheets not only find their way into our homes, by becoming a part of our furniture,

but they also have several industrial and structural applications. e.g. Concrete shuttering

plywood, Marine plywood for boat-making etc.

8. Durable material

Plywood furniture made from good quality hardwood (such as teak or gurjan wood) is

quite durable and lasts many long years. Not as long as solid wood pieces, but much much

better compared to the cheaper Particle board furniture, which eventually needs to be

replaced.

9. Less costly compared to solid wood

Solid wood is better, because its a natural product, but its also very costly. Plywood costs

lesser in comparison. So a reasonable trade-off for most people is to opt for decent quality

plywood to meet their furniture requirements.

3. STANDARD QUALITY PLYWOOD

3.1 PROMISE PLYWOOD (COMMERCIAL DIPPED PLYWOOD)

In India, when plywood shopkeepers, carpenters and interior designers talk about

Commercial plywood what they usually mean to say is MR grade plywood.

There are different grades of plywood based on quality and characteristics, such as MR

grade, BWR grade, Marine plywood etc. The acronym MR stands for Moisture Resistant,

while BWR means Boiling Water Resistant.

While some people do club BWR grade plywood into the commercial type, for most people

in the Indian plywood industry the term 'Commercial' means MR grade, while 'Waterproof'

means BWR grade.

The important features of MR grade Commercial plywood are listed below.

1. It is an Interior grade plywood, meaning its for indoor use.

2. It is not waterproof. Though the word 'Moisture Resistant' (MR) can confuse many

people into thinking that its waterproof, that is not the case. Being 'moisture resistant' is

not the same as being 'water resistant'. While it is true that moisture resistant plywood can

withstand some amount of moisture and humidity, it cannot be said to be waterproof. On

the other hand, the exterior BWR grade plywood is waterproof.

3. In the case of Commercial plywood, Urea melamine formaldehyde resin is usually used

for glueing the individual plies together. On the other hand, BWR grade is made from

phenol formaldehyde, which is a synthetic plastic resin.

4. MR grade Commercial plywood is the most widely used type of plywood for making

furniture for homes and offices. Drawing room furniture and paneling work, as well as

bedroom furniture is almost always made using Commercial ply. However in those cases

where the furniture is likely to get wet, using BWR grade ply is considered to be better.

5. The Indian Standards specification number for Commercial MR grade plywood is

detailed in document IS:303

Note :The Dipped plywood is comparatively better than Commercial plywood.

3.2 INDUS PLYWOOD (COMMERCIAL PLYWOOD)

Wooden Plywood is redundant since all plywood is already made from wood.

Commercial plywood generally refers to the grade of plywood, most often referring to MR

Grade plywood (IS 303) which is basically the cheapest grade plywood available in the

market. So you could find people asking for commercial Ply or commercial grade ply in the

Indian Market which generally means they want cheap MR(Moisture Resistant / IS 303)

Grade plywood. These plywood are generally made from a combination of softwood &

hardwood timber or just softwood timber species. ╉Commercial Plywood╊ is just a term used in the indian markets for Moisture Resistant Plywood (MR grade Plywood).

The grade of MR plywood is IS303. Most commonly used resin for making MR plywood is

Urea Formaldehyde. Note that this plywood grade is not suitable for furniture that has

exposure to water.

You can use this for wall cabinets and wardrobes. For furniture that has prolonged

exposure to water you can use Boiling Water Resistant (BWR IS303 grade) or MarinePly

(BWP IS710 grade plywood).

A disadvantage of multi wood is that if it kept for drying under the hot sun after

painting, the material has a tendency to get warped. Therefore, it is advisable that

after painting the furniture is kept for drying at a place where there is no direct

2. THOMSON ECO BOARD

ECOBoard panels are high quality industrial grade panels, manufactured from agrifibre

(agricultural residue) that is milled to form flakes. The flakes are then mixed with a

specially designed formaldehyde-free resin and compressed under high temperature to

form a stable homogeneous panel. Panels can be custom made to specifications.

ECOBoard panels can replace plywood, chipboard, OSB type-3 boards, multiplex and

conventional fibreboards (including MDF, hard-board and soft-board) for a wide range of

applications. ECOBoard panels were benchmarked against wood based panels in terms of

Medium-density fibreboard (MDF) is an engineered wood product made by breaking

down hardwood or softwood residuals into woodfibres, often in a defibrator, combining it

with wax and a resin binder, and forming panels by applying

high temperature and pressure.MDF is generally denser than plywood. It is made up of

separated fibres, but can be used as a building material similar in application to plywood. It

is stronger and much denser than particle board.

MDF is an engineered wood composite that is similar to particle board, but is much denser

and stronger than particle board.

Imagine if all of the sawdust was swept up from other wood product manufacturing

processes, and then that sawdust was mixed with binders and pressed into large sheets the

size of plywood. Okay┸ that╆s way oversimplified┸ and it╆s not exactly the process they use

to make MDF, but that gives you an idea of the makeup of the product. Because it╆s composed of such small wood fibers┸ there╆s no wood grain in MDF┻ And because it╆s pressed so hard at such high temperatures┸ there are no voids in MDF like you find in particle board. Here you can see the visible difference between particle board and

MDF, with MDF on the top and particle board on the bottom.

Advantages of MDF

MDF is generally cheaper than plywood.

The surface of MDF is very smooth┸ and you don╆t have to worry about knots on the surface.

Because it╆s so smooth┸ it╆s a great surface for painting. I recommend first priming

with a quality oil-based primer. ゅDon╆t use aerosol spray primers on MDF┿┿ It just

soaks right in, and is a huge waste of time and money. It will also cause the surface to

become rough.)

Also because of its smoothness, MDF is a great substrate for veneer.

MDF is very consistent throughout┸ so cut edges appear smooth and won╆t have voids or splinters.

Because of the smooth edges, you can use a router to create decorative edges.

The consistency and smoothness of MDF allows for easy cutting of detailed designs

(such as scrolled or scalloped designs) using a scroll saw, band saw, or jigsaw.

Disadvantages of MDF

MDF is basically glorified particle board.

Just like particle board, MDF will soak up water and other liquids like a sponge and swell unless it╆s very well sealed on all sides and edges with primer┸ paint┸ or another sealing product. Again, I recommend a quality oil-based primer. No aerosol spray

primers!!

Because it consists of such fine particles, MDF doesn╆t hold screws very well┸ and it╆s very easy to strip the screw holes.

Because it╆s so dense┸ MDF is very heavy┻ This can make it more difficult to work with┸ especially if you don╆t have a helper who can help you lift and cut the large sheets.

MDF can╆t be stained┻ Not only does it soak up stain like a sponge, but also because there╆s no wood grain on MDF┸ it looks awful when it╆s stained┻ (Kind of like staining

particle board. Why would you bother?)

MDF contains VOCs (urea-formaldehyde). Off gassing can be greatly minimized (but

probably not eliminated) if the MDF is encapsulated with primer, paint, etc.

MDF does not contain knots or rings, making it more uniform than natural woods during

cutting and in service. However, MDF is not entirely isotropic, since the fibres are pressed

tightly together through the sheet. Typical MDF has a hard, flat, smooth surface that makes

it ideal for veneering, as there is no underlying grain to telegraph through the thin veneer

as with plywood. A so-called "Premium" MDF is available that features more uniform

density throughout the thickness of the panel.

MDF may be glued, doweled or laminated. Typical fasteners are T-nuts and pan-head

machine screws. Smooth-shank nails do not hold well, and neither do fine-pitch screws,

especially in the edge. Special screws are available with a coarse thread pitch, but sheet-

metal screws also work well. Like natural wood, MDF may split when woodscrews are

installed without pilot holes.

2. HIGH DENSITY FIBRE BOARDS (HDF)

EXTERIOR GRADE

HDF board is a wood fibre board made from fine wood fibres. The board is homogeneous

through and through, has a particular dense, smooth, surface which is harder than MDF

board. Due to its flatness and excellent treatment possibilities HDF board can be cut,

drilled, painted or processed in other ways.

HDF board is mainly used to build furniture such as kitchen cupboard doors, tables etc.

This material is also used in

HDF is High Density Fiberboard and is similar to particle board and medium-density board

but it is much denser and stronger. It is made by compressing wood fibers mechanically.

Style/Finishing

HDF is a much stronger board compared to MDF and it gives a smooth and uniform surface

wherever it is applied. HDF does not have any grain and it can be finished by applying paint

on it. If you want wood grain finishing then you would need to put a veneer or teak ply on

the HDF board

Maintenance

To protect HDF the steps below should be taken.

Make sure that the board does not get in touch with water as it can damage it.

Clean the board with a clean soft cloth to remove the dust.

Do not mop with damp cloth.

Once you finish the HDF with paint or veneer wood then the maintenance steps for

those finishes should be followed accordingly.

Advantages

HDF comes with a smooth surface.

HDF is High density board has more strength compared to MDF and Particle board

Great solution for indoor and outdoor furniture, wall paneling, furniture, room

partitions, and doors.

Disadvantages

HDF is the best board when compared with particle board and MDF. Still a lot of carpenters

prefer wood block board compared to HDF as they are more confident about the nail

holding capabilities of natural wood whose blocks are used to build the block board.

SHUTTERING PLYWOOD

Shuttering Plywood is a highly densified plywood with a smooth film coating on both sides

of the faces and is used primarily for cement formworks during construction.

What I mean by densified is that atleast 9 layers of core veneers (10 in the case of ours) are

pressed in a high pressure pressing machine at high temperatures. 9 core layers plus the

faces on both sides plus the film layers (Dynae Film) on top of them. So its a 1+1+9+1+1

construction pattern. We at Avron use a 1+1+10+1+1 construction pattern which lends the

plywood extra strength and load bearing capacity.

The plywood is generally pressed to a thickness of 12mm with a density of 750Kg/cubic

metre to ensure it supports the weight of poured concrete. SHuttering Ply is generally used

to make the cast of ceiling, walls, drains, highways, pillars, etc, to p0ur concrete in it in

order to give the concrete any shape needed.

BAMBOO PLYWOOD

Bamboo Plywood or bamboo sheets have become one of the most talked about building

products in the last year, among green building professionals and architects. It is versatile

and renewable. It is not a tree but a grass--bamboo can grow to maturity in as little as one

growing season, yielding many harvests over a typical 25-50 year tree life cycle. Bamboo is

typically harvested after only three years of growth but four to five year-old bamboo is a

more stable raw material for the production of bamboo panels.

Bamboo panels and bamboo sheets provide for many current and future needs for

sustainable raw material streams and is a valuable NTFP (non-timber forest product).

Bamboo is used extensively around the world for construction materials including: roofs,

After processing split bamboo with machines and glue, bamboo board can be produced for

resistant for natural and carbonized bamboo plywood and panels. Vertical grain bamboo

plywood and horizontal grain bamboo plywood are the most prolific forms of this new

construction material and it is produced as natural or carbonized in color.

This is an anti-skid plywood which is useful in flooring specially in heavy vehicles and large

containers. It is useful in automobile sector for ceiling, paneling, seat back rest etc.

It is widely used for flooring in industrial as well as public areas. The product provides a

friction-resistant, anti-skidchequered surface, which is bonded with superior grade

BLOCK BOARDS

By definition, blockboard is an engineered wooden board that consists of a core of

softwood blocks (strips) lined edge to edge and sandwiched between layers of hardwood

veneer on either side. In this article we will take a look at the important properties of

blockboards.

Properties

These boards have good dimensional stability (even when exposed to humidity), and

exhibit high resistance to warping or twisting.

Also have a better ability to hold nails and screws, compared to other engineered

boards such as particle boards or MDF (medium density fibre boards).

Another important characteristic of blockboard is that it is light in weight, because the

core blocks that form the bulk of the board are of softwood that has much lesser density

and weight compared to hardwood. Because of having low weight it is easier to

transport.

Can be finished using paints, varnishes or can be laminated. With proper finishing such

as by glueing laminates on its surfaces, blockboards can be made to appear exactly like

their costlier counterparts viz. plywood

Another feature of blockboards is that they can are also easy to work with for

carpenters using their regular wood working tools. In contrast, carpenters find it very

difficult to work with other engineered boards such as MDF or Particle boards as these

types do not hold nails and only screws have to be used.

These boards are made in MR-Moisture resistant grade, as well as BWP-Boiling water

proof grade, for interior and exterior use respectively. The BWP variety uses superior

glue (phenol formaldehyde), and is stronger with better resistance to water or

humidity.

Advantages of Blockboard

Lighter in weight:

The blockboard core is made from solid blocks of wood that is usually obtained from

softwood trees such as pine, mango or cedar. In comparison good quality plywood is often

made from veneers obtained from hardwood trees (e.g. Gurjan wood which is very popular

in India), and the high quality solid wood that is used in furniture is generally obtained

from hardwood trees such as teak wood.

Because hardwood is denser than softwood, its weight is also more. So if you take a piece of

plywood or solid wood and compare its weight with a blockboard piece of the same size,

you will find that blockboard is lighter in weight.

The advantage of being light-weight is that it can be more easily transported to the end-

location. The most common application of this is in the case of doors that we use inside our

homes. Doors are very often made from blockboard.

Lesser tendency to sag or bend

In cases where very long pieces of wood are required in furniture making, such as in long

book shelves, panels, benches and tables, blockboard is often preferred over plywood. This

is because long plywood pieces tend to bend in the middle, whereas blockboard is stiffer

and less prone to bending. When the board length exceeds 6 or 7 feet, blockboard is

generally used instead of plywood.

Costs Less

Another important advantage of blockboard is that it is cheaper than good quality solid

wood as well as hardwood plywood. This is because softwood costs lesser than hardwood.

Better than Particle Board and even MDF

Compared to other engineered wood products that are popular these days, such as Particle

boards(which is made from small particles of wood flakes/chips) and even MDF (which is

made from wood fibers), blockboard is considered to be better. It is comparatively stronger

and lasts longer. Also from the carpenters' point of view, the added advantage of

blockboards is that it is easier to work with, since it can take nails as well as screws. In

comparison, particle board and MDF do not have much nail holding strength and hence

only screws are used on them. In fact most of the carpenters in India who make custom-

built furniture work only with plywood and blockboards, and not MDF or Particle boards.

Disadvantages of Blockboard

Not as strong as plywood or good quality solid wood

The major disadvantage of blockboards is that since softwood is used in its making, it is not

as strong as quality solid wood (such as teak wood) or hardwood plywood. So when it

comes to furniture making, plywood is the preferred choice of material (except for cases

where lengthy wood pieces have to be used). However, if instead of softwood blocks,

hardwood is used to form the blockboard core (some manufacturers do this), then the

strength of the blockboard increases.

Minor disadvantage for carpenters

In some cases, the blocks (also called strips or battens) that form the core, may have small

gaps between them. These gaps cannot be seen from outside since there is layer of veneer

on top. Because of this, sometimes the nails that are driven through the board surface may

not go into the wood but rather in the gaps between the blocks, which can adversely affect

the holding strength of that nail. But this is only a minor drawback, that occurs only

sometimes.

Rubber plantations have existed for hundreds of years in Tropical countries. These

Plantations have been used mainly for the production of latex. After the economic life of

the rubber tree, which is generally 30 years, the latex yields become extremely low and the

HARD WOOD

Hardwood Plywood generally refers to the make of the plywood, which is the timber used in construction the layers of plywood. Hardwood generally is ascribed to hardwood timber species such as Eucalyptus, Gurjan, Birch which is higher in density and are much more long lasting than other timber species such as rubberwood or poplar. Plywood made from hardwood timber are generally heavier in weight, higher in density and have much longer life than softwood plywood. I would suggest opting for hardwood plywood with a Eucalyptus timber make to make sure the plywood is strong, lasting and most importantly sourced from ecologically sustainable cultivations.

Hardwood plywood refers to what material each ply is made of. In regular 3-ply plywood,

each ply is usually constructed of pine or some other softwood╆s wood-chips and glue then heated and pressed into a ね旺 by ぱ旺 sheet┻ Each ply is then glued to another until you have built up the appropriate amount of plies. So in hardwood plywood┸ they won╆t use wood chips┸ but multiple thick strips of hardwood to make up the layers of each ply. Hardwoods are more expensive than softwoods, so

hardwood plywood would be more expensive.

Saw timber is typically sawn into 1" thick boards. The saw cuts a kerf between boards 1/4"

lunch meat) into 1/32" leaves or sheets. That produces 32 veneer surfaces for every 1 that

MICA LAMINATING SHEETS

Mica traditionally refers to a group of sheet silicate minerals that have numerous different

applications today, including in the creation of window panes and glass, as an insulator in

various electric, and even in toothpaste. This is mainly due to the fact that mica is generally

stable when exposed to electricity, light, moisture, and extreme temperatures. In

toothpaste, mica acts as a mild abrasive that aids in polishing of the tooth surface. Ground

mica is often also used in cosmetics industry to add the glittering finish in the products.

However, when referring to mica in the same context as wood, mica is generally another

name for laminates.

Laminates, specifically, are a multi-layer synthetic wood product. It is created of high-

density fiber, melamine resin or wood particles. On top, the laminate has a photographic

applique layer, which is in turn covered with a clear protective layer. The photographic

applique layer is usually imprinted with various images that aim to imitate the appearance

of real wood. Laminates are usually applied over plywood or fiberboard, so that they can

duplicate the look of wood for a cheaper cost. In case of laminated wood, the wood veneers

are pasted parallel to each other, as opposed to the right angles in plywood.

glued to plywood, in the same way a teak veneer can also be glued over plywood or any

SKIN DOORS

A molded door has the same structure as that of flush door. The only difference is that the

surface material is a molded skin made of HDF / MDF. It is commonly used as interior

Construction of Skin doors

Stiles - Vertical Frames that run the full height of a door and compose its right and left

WHAT IS UPVC

OVERVIEW:

UPVC is based on polyvinyl chloride (PVC), one of the most versatile polymers found in the

century. PVC today finds application in almost all facet of our life, from daily use to highly

sophisticated life saving applications. This flexibility of PVC is leveraged through a unique

formulation to prepare a special UPVC blend for windows and doors.

UPVC (where 'U' stands for unplasticized) is one of the most preferred window framing

material across the world. The material comes in a range of colour, is low maintenance and

offers benefits which no material so far has matched. This has helped UPVC garner more

than 50% market share in countries like UK, USA where it is also known as vinyl or vinyl

siding.

BENEFITS OF UPVC WINDOWS:

UPVC windows and doors offer many of the performance characteristics which no other

FORMULATION:

UPVC is prepared with a special formulation in which modifiers and stabilizers are added

to polyvinyl chloride (PVC) making it rigid and suitable for use as window frames.

PVC: PVC forms the major (approx 80 - 85 %) constituent of blend composition. PVC unlike

other polymer is heat sensitive and hence needs additives for processing. The property of

material is such that it can be made as soft as rubber or can have strength close to any

other engineered plastic. This versatility is developed through additives (like light & UV

stabilizer, processing aids, impact modifier, lubricants, fillers, pigments, plasticizer etc.)

which are added in PVC during the blending process.

Stabilizer - Heat & Light: As PVC cannot be processed due to its heat sensitive nature,

Heat stabilizers are must to improve the stability of PVC and render it process-able.

Sufficient stabilizer is required to prevent degradation of base material during processing.

Lack of sufficient stabilizer may lead to early discoloration of profile when exposed to

sunlight. Since windows are subject to harsh condition of Indian climate - High

temperature, the formulation should also take care of endurance of profile to continuous

exposure of heat & UV. This typically applies for PVC window profile in the tropical zone

wherein the profile is exposed to high temperature with UV radiations. For this light

stabilizers are used in recommended dosage.

Processing Aids: These are generally acrylic based material which enhances the melt

strength during fusion and contributes in smooth extrusion of profile with uniform cross

section.

Impact Modifier: Typically polymers tend to become brittle once subjected to low

temperature or exposed to UV radiation. Acrylic based impact modifiers are used to retain

impact strength even after UV exposure and at low temperature. Insufficient dosage or low

cost impact modifier (like CPE) may not be able to withstand the impact resistance over

long period of usage and may become brittle / crack during fabrication, installation,

operation or usage.

Lubricants: These additives are used to manoeuvre the process-ability of PVC in the

extrusion process. Excessive or insufficient usage of the lubricants may cause product

defect.

Pigments - Titanium Di-Oxide: Titanium Di-oxide is an expensive pigment which is used

as white pigment, imparting natural white color to the PVC profile and provides the

necessary UV stability for the product to have durability over years of usage. The dosage of

TiO2 depends upon the UV radiation of the region. Typically the dosage ranges from 4 parts

for climate similar to Europe and 10 parts for harsh tropical climate like Arizona, India, etc.

The pigment also gives opacity to the product.

Other pigments (organic / inorganic) & brightener are used to color the pigment but may

not have similar UV stability. These should be used cautiously ensuring the weather

resistance and color fastness.

Fillers: These are inorganic minerals (like calcium carbonate) as fine particles

homogenized in the PVC blend. Usage of filler has effect on mechanical property (tensile

strength, elongation and impact strength), shrinkage and cost. When used in designed

proportionate improve the mechanical strength of the polymer and if used in excessive

though reduces the cost but impairs the durability of product.
