The US Supreme Court has reversed its 1973 deci-sion and eliminated the constitutional right toabortion. This allows every state legislature in the

United States of America to regulate abortion. Many ofthem are expected to effectively ban abortion by makingit illegal at any stage of pregnancy without any exemp-tions for rape or incest. The domestic significance of thisdecision can be left to American commentators. As out-siders, living as we do in a post-war world substantiallyshaped by the US, it’s useful to reflect on what this de-cision tells us about America.

Most obviously, this decision and its likely legal im-plications make the US an outlier amongst first-worldnations. Spain, a conservative Catholic country, liber-alised its abortion law in 2010 by legalising the volun-tary termination of pregnancy during the first fourteenweeks of a pregnancy with exemptions for later abor-tions if the child had foetal defects or if the pregnancywas a serious risk to the health of the mother.

One of the last hold-outs, Catholic Ireland, repealedits Eighth Amendment, which effectively banned abor-tion, in 2018. Indians have a particular interest in this de-velopment because it was the death of Savita Halap-panavar, a 31-year-old dentist in an Irish hospital, thatfired up the campaign that saw the amendment repealedsix years later. In 2012, Halappanavar was 17 weekspregnant when she went to hospital with back pains anddoctors diagnosed a miscarriage. They refused to per-form an abortion because Irish law made that illegal solong as the foetus had a heartbeat. By the time the foetusdied and the abortion was performed, she had an infec-tion as a result of the delay and she died the day after.

The backlash to this dreadful, unnecessary tragedyhas led to a law which, like Spain’s, allows abortion dur-ing the first three months of pregnancy and even later ifthere is a risk to the life of the pregnant woman or if thefoetus suffers from a fatal abnormality. Laws like theseare, in effect, the common sense of modern nations.

Even in conservative Japan, where abortions are dejure illegal, the law carves out broad exceptions that al-low the procedure to be widely used. Germany made itsabortion law more permissive in 1976, three years afterthe Roe vs Wade judgment. Germany, like Japan, for-mally protects the life of the foetus from the moment ofconception, but allows abortion in the first trimester ofpregnancy without penalty if the pregnant woman hasbeen formally counselled or if her health is seriously en-dangered. It’s worth citing these examples to illustratethe extremism of the laws passed by conservative USstate legislatures, which will now be implementedthanks to the recent Supreme Court decision.

Health'Save our Ocean,

Protect our Future'United Nations Ocean Conference is

set to take place in Lisbon, Portu-gal from June 27-July 1 and will

be co-hosted by the Governments ofKenya and Portugal, said the UN in itspress release.

The Ocean Conference comes at acritical time as the world is seeking to ad-dress many of the deep-rooted problemsof our societies laid bare by the COVID-19 pandemic. These problems requiremajor structural transformations andcommon shared solutions that are an-chored in the Sustainable DevelopmentGoals (SDGs).

"To mobilize action, the Conferencewill seek to propel much needed science-based innovative solutions aimed at start-ing a new chapter of global ocean action,"it added.

Liu Zhenmin, United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Economic and So-cial Affairs, will serve as the Secretary-General of the Conference, and Miguel deSerpa Soares, Under-Secretary-Generalfor Legal Affairs, will serve as the SpecialAdviser to the Presidents of the OceanConference on the ocean and legal mat-ters.

In 2017, the United Nations Secre-tary-General Guterres appointed Ambas-sador Peter Thomson of Fiji as his SpecialEnvoy for the Ocean, aiming at galvaniz-ing concerted efforts to follow up on theoutcomes of the 2017 United NationsOcean Conference, maintaining the mo-mentum for action to conserve and sus-tainably use the oceans, seas and marine

resources for sustainable development. The United Nations has designated 8

June as World Oceans Day - a day for hu-manity to celebrate the ocean.

UN Secretary-General AntonioGuterres noted, "The ocean can be ourbiggest ally in responding to planetarycrises of climate change, biodiversity lossand pollution. Next week's UN OceanConference is an opportunity to committo a sustainable blue economy that cancreate jobs while protecting our planet."

The ocean covers over 70 per cent ofthe planet. It is our life source, supportinghumanity's sustenance and that of everyother organism on earth.

Under China's au-thoritarian regime,migration from

Hong Kong has wit-nessed a sharp increasedue to excessive govern-ment crackdowns on civilliberties.

Hong Kong lostaround 93,000 residentsin 2020, followed by an-other 23,000 in 2021,marking the largest dropin Hong Kong's popula-tion since 2003 when se-vere acute respiratorysyndrome (SARS) brokeout across Hong Kongand mainland China, amedia report said.

Several residents ofHong Kong are vacatingthe city to start a new lifeabroad amid rising fearfor their future.

Hong Kong's recentemigration fair survey re-sults showed that 79 percent of the respondentsplan to emigrate withintwo years, and 19 per centintend to leave HongKong within six months.

The 3rd "International

Immigration and PropertyExpo" held on June 11and 12 did a survey thatcollected 35,000 surveysfrom prospective visitorswho registered online. The survey shows that thethree most popular coun-tries are the United King-dom, Canada and Aus-tralia, accounting for 31per cent, 22 per cent, and

21 per cent respectively. The survey also showsthat families who are fi-nancially better off tend toemigrate more - 66 percent of the respondentshave a net worth overUSD 1.02 million and 17per cent have assets worthmore than USD 6.37 mil-lion. Of those who plan toleave, 30 per cent are in

the group with a monthlyhousehold income overUSD 20,000.

Lockdown and quar-antine policies coupledwith increasing Chineseinterference caused manyexpatriates to return hometo the United States, Unit-ed Kingdom, Australiaand other countries forgood.

Earlier, the city gainedan average of 53,000 newresidents per year from2015-2019 which turnedout to be roughly the ex-act number of people whodeparted Hong Kong dur-ing the first two weeks ofMarch alone, media re-ports said, quoting thecity's Immigration De-partment.

For the past 60 years,Hong Kong's populationhas grown nearly everyyear, from some 3.2 mil-lion people in 1961 to 7.5million in 2019, accord-ing to Hong Kong's Cen-sus and Statistics Depart-ment however in the lastcouple of years followingthe Chinese crackdownspeople have thoughtabout leaving, but in thelast six months, there'sbeen an absolute mass ex-odus.

It is estimated that 60-70 per cent of people haveleft in the past six to 12months, which includespeople with businessesand family in Hong Kong

as well as those who wereonce deeply committed tostaying.

The money leavingHong Kong also signalsthe urgency with whichpeople are fleeing.

The majority of thepeople are relocating tothe United Kingdom, with more than one lakhapplying to move as ofMarch.

However, most peo-ple leaving are headed toSingapore, especiallythose working in finance, law, and recruitment asthey people are attractedto the ease of business, family friendliness, taxincentives and open bor-ders of Singapore.

Asian Tigers are alsoseeing an uptick in movesfrom Hong Kong toJapan, South Korea, andThailand. Dubai is alsoabsorbing talent fromHong Kong, like Pepsi,Unilever and P&Gmoved people out ofHong Kong into UAE,the media report stated.

Anew cross-disciplinarypaper from Edith Cow-an University (ECU)

proposes we change the waywe view tourism, seeing it notjust as a recreational experi-ence but as an industry thatcan provide real health bene-fits.

The collaboration be-tween ECU's Centre for Preci-sion Health and School ofBusiness and Law foundmany aspects of going on hol-iday could have a positive im-pact on those with mentalhealth issues or conditions.

Lead researcher Dr JunWen said the diverse team oftourism, public health andmarketing experts investigat-ed how tourism could benefitthose living with dementia.

"Medical experts can rec-ommend dementia treatmentssuch as music therapy, exer-cise, cognitive stimulation, reminiscence therapy, sensorystimulation and adaptations toa patient's mealtimes and en-vironment," Dr Wen said.

"These are all also oftenfound when on holidays.

"This research is amongthe first to conceptually dis-cuss how these tourism expe-riences could potentially workas dementia-interventions."

Holiday fun... or treat-ment?

Dr Wen said the varied na-ture of tourism meant therewere many opportunities toincorporate treatments forconditions such as dementia.

For example, being innew environments and havingnew experiences could pro-vide cognitive and sensorystimulation.

"Exercise has been linkedto mental wellbeing and trav-elling often involves en-hanced physical activity, suchas more walking," Dr Wensaid. "Mealtimes are often dif-ferent on holiday: they're usu-ally more social affairs withmultiple people and family-style meals have been foundto positively influence demen-tia patients' eating behaviour.

"And then there's the ba-sics like fresh air and sunshineincreasing vitamin D andserotonin levels.

"Everything that comestogether to represent a holistictourism experience, makes iteasy to see how patients withdementia may benefit fromtourism as an intervention."

A shift in thinkingDr Wen said COVID-19's

impact on travel in recentyears had raised questionsabout tourism's value beyondlifestyle and economic fac-tors. "Tourism has been foundto boost physical and psycho-logical wellbeing," he said.

"So, after COVID, it's agood time to identify tourism'splace in public health -- andnot just for healthy tourists, but vulnerable groups."

Travel-therapy can provide real mentalhealth and well being benefits

According to a study by the Uni-versity of California, scientistshave found a way to bypass the

need for biological photosynthesis al-together and create food independentof sunlight by using artificial photo-synthesis.

The technology uses a two-stepelectrocatalytic process to convert car-bon dioxide, electricity, and water intoacetate. Food-producing organismsthen consume acetate in the dark togrow. The hybrid organic-inorganicsystem could increase the conversionefficiency of sunlight into food, up to18 times more efficient for some foods.

Photosynthesis has evolved inplants for millions of years to turn wa-ter, carbon dioxide, and the energyfrom sunlight into plant biomass and

the foods we eat. This process, howev-er, is very inefficient, with only about1% of the energy found in sunlight end-ing up in the plant. Scientists at UCRiverside and the University ofDelaware have found a way to bypass

the need for biological photosynthesisaltogether and create food independentof sunlight by using artificial photo-synthesis.

The research, published in NatureFood, uses a two-step electrocatalyticprocess to convert carbon dioxide, electricity, and water into acetate, theform of the main component of vine-gar. Food-producing organisms thenconsume acetate in the dark to grow.Combined with solar panels to generatethe electricity to power the electro-catalysis, this hybrid organic-inorganicsystem could increase the conversionefficiency of sunlight into food, up to18 times more efficient for some foods.

"With our approach we sought toidentify a new way of producing foodthat could break through the limits nor-

mally imposed by biological photosyn-thesis," said corresponding authorRobert Jinkerson, a UC Riverside as-sistant professor of chemical and envi-ronmental engineering.

In order to integrate all the compo-nents of the system together, the outputof the electrolyzer was optimized tosupport the growth of food-producingorganisms. Electrolyzers are devicesthat use electricity to convert raw ma-terials like carbon dioxide into usefulmolecules and products. The amount ofacetate produced was increased whilethe amount of salt used was decreased, resulting in the highest levels of acetateever produced in an electrolyzer todate. "Using a state-of-the-art two-steptandem CO2 electrolysis setup devel-oped in our laboratory, we were able to

achieve a high selectivity towards ac-etate that cannot be accessed throughconventional CO2 electrolysis routes,"said corresponding author Feng Jiao atUniversity of Delaware.

Experiments showed that a widerange of food-producing organisms canbe grown in the dark directly on the ac-etate-rich electrolyzer output, includ-ing green algae, yeast, and fungalmycelium that produce mushrooms.Producing algae with this technology isapproximately fourfold more energy-efficient than growing it photosynthet-ically.

Yeast production is about 18-foldmore energy-efficient than how it istypically cultivated using sugar ex-tracted from corn. "We were able togrow food-producing organisms with-

out any contributions from biologicalphotosynthesis. Typically, these organ-isms are cultivated on sugars derivedfrom plants or inputs derived from pe-troleum -- which is a product of bio-logical photosynthesis that took placemillions of years ago. This technologyis a more efficient method of turningsolar energy into food, as compared tofood production that relies on biologi-cal photosynthesis," said ElizabethHann, a doctoral candidate in theJinkerson Lab and co-lead author of thestudy.

The potential for employing thistechnology to grow crop plants wasalso investigated. Cowpea, tomato, to-bacco, rice, canola, and green pea wereall able to utilize carbon from acetatewhen cultivated in the dark.

Food can be produced without sunlight

Addressing a press conferencehere, AAP Punjab chief spokesper-son Malvinder Singh Kang congrat-ulated SAD (A) candidate SimranjitSingh Mann on his victory and saidthat the AAP candidate GurmailSingh has lost in a very tough con-test.

Kang said the AAP's vote sharein this election has only reduced by2% compared to the 2019 Lok Sab-ha elections. While Akali Dal, Con-gress and BJP candidates have evenfailed to secure their security de-posits in the Sangrur by-election.

Divulging the further details,Kang said that AAP got 34.65% ofthe votes, while the BJP got only 9%,Congress 11% and the Akali Dal 6%total share of votes in this polling. The Congress' vote share was 27% inthe 2019 Lok Sabha, Akali Dal got24% of the votes in 2019 and which

indicates that the public is no longerwith the traditional parties.

Stating that the party is not afraidof defeats, Kang said, "We areamong the people and will continueto work for the welfare of the people. The party has seen many such de-feats in the past. In the 2014 LokSabha elections, we did not get a sin-gle seat in Delhi, but in the 2015 Del-hi Assembly elections, we formedthe government by winning 67 out of70 seats."

Kang said the party is taking theresult of the Sangrur by-election veryseriously. The party leadership willreview it and consider it. The AAPleader cited the low turnout in the by-election as a major reason for its de-

feat. He said lakhs of people did notcast their votes amid the ongoingpaddy sowing season and extremeheat in Sangrur. "We will learn fromthis election and will work more in-dustriously for the welfare of people. We will come back strongly," Kangadded.
