The Big Penguin, standing a proud 3m tall on the foreshore, was erected to commemorate the town’s centenary in 1975. It has become one of the most photographed landmarks in Tasmania.

Ulverstone is well known for its unique memorial parks with many reunions and services held each year in Ulverstone. The clock is the most prominent memorial in Ulverstone built by mostly immigrants in 1953 as a Shrine of Remembrance for those killed in the war.

Come to the edge of a 250 metre ravine that’s part of a wildlife corridor from the coast to Cradle Mountain. The views from the lookout above the canyon are inspiring. The Leven Canyon Reserve is almost 2,500 ha, and a refuge for Tasmanian plants, animals and birds. Experience them on a range of fascinating walks, take on the challenge of 697 forest stairs or see just how much force Mother Nature has needed to carve the canyon, onacanyonfloorwalk.FacilitiesincludestoriesandinformationrevealingthesignificanceoftheCanyonandsurrounds, a well equipped picnic area with barbecue facilities and toilets and lots of great walks. Dial range | Ironcliffe Rd, PenguinThis chain of mountains and valleys was given its name because the silhouette of one of its summits, the Gnomon, resembles an ancient sundial. The Range has more than 50 kilometres of trails, with opportunities for short walks or longer treks.

Devonport, the service centre to a surrounding population of 70,000 people was firstsettledin1851.Timberharvestingwasthefirstindustrywiththecitybecomingthecentreofshipbuildingonthenorth-westcoast.Tonnesoftimberwasshippedfrom Devonport to build the city of Melbourne in the late 1800’s. William Holyman began his shipping line in Devonport in 1881 going on to become one of Australia’s foremostshippingcompanies.Roll-on/roll-offshipswerefirstintroducedtoAustralia on the Melbourne/Devonport route in 1959 with the Princess of Tasmania the forerunner to the current Spirits of Tasmania.

The seaside lifestyle attracts many to port sorell. Entwined with the relaxed and informal ambiance of sun, surf and sea, the town offers an abundance of activities. GustavWeindorferwasthefirstEuropeantoseeandunderstandtheuniquenessof cradle mountain. Gustav lobbied successive governments to have the area preserved.CradleMountainwasfinallydeclaredaNationalParkin1982andhassince been declared a World Heritage Area. The Kentish Plains surrounding sheffield were initially used for grazing land. Miners opened up the high country. Bushmen harvested the timber and constructed sawmills. Grazing land became farming land with dairying, potatoes, pigs, sheep and snaring for furs sustaining pioneers. Vegetablecropsbegantoreplacedairyherdsinthe1960’s.In1963,theMersey-ForthHydro Development began in the Kentish hinterland.

Ulverstone and penguin’sabundantsupplyoftimberwaswhatattractedfirstsettlers in the 1850s. Penguin also had silver and iron mines that were worked in theearlydays.Oncethetimberwasremovedandthelandcleared,pioneersbeganplantingcrops.Oneoftheprincipalcropsgrownwaspotatoesandwiththerapidincrease in production, the growing and export of potatoes quickly became a major industry. A mild climate, good rainfall and rich soils combine to make the Central Coast one of the most productive agricultural areas in Tasmania, providing abundant nature, lush farmland growing fresh produce, and seaside villages with relaxed dining and outdoor markets.

Discover our heritage through attractions which have painstakingly preserved the past. The Don river railway is a rail buffs wonderland with the largest collection of both steam locomotives in Tasmania dating from 1879 to 1951 and passenger carriages from 1869 to 1964. For those interested in political history National Trust property home hill, the family home of Joseph Lyons and his wife Dame Enid, provides a fascinating look into the life of an Australian Prime Minister.

The Devonport regional gallery’s permanent collection focuses on artists and craftspeople working in Tasmania whilst the Robinson Photographic Collection contains portraits,landscapes,streetandcrowd-scapesovertheperiod1927-1975.TheGalleryalso hosts the prestigious Tidal: City of Devonport Art Award, a biennial national award open to artists who convey the many connotations of ‘tidal’ within their work.

At the agricultural hub of sassafras, view the pink opium poppies resplendent throughout the countryside in Nov/Dec. At other times, crops such as potatoes, carrots, broccoli and occasionally tulips, which are exported to Holland, can be seen. Have a photo taken with the big spud at Sassafras before continuing onto the big platypus at Latrobe.

Located on the banks of the Mersey River, take a guided tour with a local and see live platypus in their natural environment at the warrawee Forest reserve (Aboriginal for Plenty) nestled only 4kms from town. Departing the seaside town of Ulverstone wind your way through rich farming areas to the small village of Forth and the impressive braddons Lookout with an overviewofthecoastlineandpatchworkoffields.

Take the Melrose Road to Eugenana and visit the Tasmanian arboretum wandering through a peaceful landscape among trees from all over the world.

HeadingfurthersouthfromForthalongtheWilmotRoad,youwillfindtheDooley’s Trail walk. The trail runs along the Wilmot River from Alma Reserve to Spellman’s Reserve at Castra.

Travel further south through the rich farming land past Nietta and on to the Leven canyon, a spectacular 250m deep ravine with walks ranging from easy access to the challenge of the Forest Stairs. Followthe‘OldCoastRoad’,pastthebeautifulroadsidegardensalongtherockyheadlands and secluded coves. goat island just west of Ulverstone, accessed at low tide, has provided many a child and adult alike magical hours of exploring.

The Leven River in the town of Ulverstone, is a favourite spot for all kinds of water sportsincludingwater-skiing,boating,fishing,sailingandjetskiing.YoucanDiscover the Leven on a cruise with commentary on its history and surrounding environment.
