If you are flying in and you are certain that you will be able to join your vessel within five days of your arrival in Australia, a Transit (Subclass 771) visa may suit your needs. If you need longer than five days in Australia (if you fly in) or 30 days (if you arrive by sea) and hold a Maritime Crew (Subclass 988) visa then you may want to apply for a Visitor visa to cover your stay. There are three common visa options currently available to maritime crew wanting to participate in a crew change in Australia. Your individual circumstances will impact which visa is the best option for you.

the eVisitor (Subclass 651) visa using the Tourist Stream

the Visitor (Subclass 600) visa using the Tourist Stream

the Transit (Subclass 771) visa

The best option for you will depend on how long you need to stay in Australia, and the country that issued you the passport that you are travelling on.

If you are flying in and you are certain that you will be able to join your vessel within five days of your arrival in Australia, a Transit (Subclass 771) visa may suit your needs.

If you need longer than five days in Australia (if you fly in) or 30 days (if you arrive by sea) and hold a Maritime Crew (Subclass 988) visa then you may want to apply for a Visitor visa to cover your stay.

You may apply for the Tourist Stream Visitor visa to meet quarantine or self-isolated requirements.

Applicants for a Visitor (Subclass 600) visa do not need to hold a passport from the above countries.

Once you have selected which visa is the best option for your individual circumstances, you will need to lodge an application as early as possible. Below are examples of how you can lodge applications for a Transit or Visitor visa. The Department of Home Affairs uses “dynamic” forms that ask more or less questions depending on the answers that you have already provided. As a result, the below screenshots are indicative only and may change depending on your individual responses.

Lodging an eVisitor (Subclass 651) visa using the

Tourist Stream

1. After logging in your ImmiAccount, you should select the “My applications” tab and then click on the

“New applicant” button.

2. Then click on “Visitor” and then eVisitor (651).

3. After reviewing the Terms and Conditions, click on the “I agree to the terms and conditions” button.

4. Read the Critical Information and Click on “Next”.

5. Enter all requested information exactly as shown on your passport and ensure that your email

address has been correctly entered.

Select “Tourist” as your purpose of stay in Australia and click “Next”.

6. Confirm that the details are correct. Click “Next” to confirm or “Previous” to correct.

7. Enter your residential address and click “Next”.

8. Answer all character questions accurately and honestly. Click “Next”.

9. Make your declarations about the application you are lodging. Click “Next”.

10. Review the information provided and if correct, click “Submit” otherwise return to the page to update the

necessary information.

11. Click on “Submit Now” and your application is submitted.

Additional information from your Shipping or Manning agent

You will need to provide evidence that you are employed on a specific vessel, and where and when that vessel will be in Australia. For this, you will need a statement from your Shipping or Manning Agent, or your employer that provides, as a minimum, the following information:

your name

the name of the person you are replacing where known

the name of the company employing you

the name of the ship you will join

the date you expecting to arrive in Australia

the port and date you expect to join the ship

the scheduled dates and ports that ship will be in Australia and when it will depart, and

if the person writing the statement is not the ship's owner, a copy of the request for crew from the

ship’s agent in Australia.

12. To do this, from your ImmiAccount. Select the eVisitor application, you just lodged and click on “Update

details”.

13. Click on “Attach Documents”.

14. Select “Other (Specify)” and enter a description of the document that you are attaching. Click on Browse

and upload from your device a copy of the additional supporting information from your shipping or

manning agent.

Lodging a Visitor (Subclass 600) visa using the

Tourist Stream

Australia.

Select “Tourist Stream” for the requested stream.

Select “Other” for reason for visiting Australia and provided details of when you need to be in Australia and why.

Click “Next”.

5. Enter all requested passport information exactly as shown on your passport.

members. Enter the details and click “Next”.

11. Answer the requested information. Answer the question about the number of times you intend to enter

Australia by air on this Visitor visa application and not the number of times you intend to enter as a

maritime crew member.

Additional information from your Shipping or Manning agent

19. You will need to provide evidence that you are employed on a specific vessel, and where and when that

Where you have not yet been able to book flights, enter “Other (specify)” in the Name of incoming airline field and enter “To be advised” in the Other incoming airline and Incoming flight number. Select the city you where intend to fly into Australia.

Enter the details of the shipping company, your role on the vessel, the name and ID of the vessel that you will be joining, when you will be signing on, and where and when that vessel will be leaving Australia.
