FELICITATIONSSevalaya is the first organisation to respond to any natural calamities and has always supported the district administration by contributing materials and manpower. In the present COVID-19 crisis, Sevalaya has donated ventilators and PPE Kits to Thiruvallur General Hospital, distributed groceries to many daily wage labourers, Physically Challenged people and Irula families.

Mageswari Ravikumar, District Collector, Thiruvallur District

I am happy to know that Sevalaya has completed 32 years of service to the needy and underprivileged. I had the opportunity to visit Kasuva centre of Sevalaya. It was a pleasure to see the happy faces of the children and senior citizens. The homes are well maintained.

I am impressed by the care given to the dry cows at the Gaushala. The range of services the institution offers for the welfare of the poor and needy and the professionalism is highly commendable. I wish Sevalaya success in all its future initiatives.

Dr Anand R G, Member, National Commission for Protection of Child Rights

Sevalaya’s care for humanity and her connect with nature are what drew me to the charity; The environment is so conducive - every time I visit Sevalaya, I feel at peace with the world, among the harmonious chirp of the children and the birds. Penchant for sustainability unfolds itself through all their efforts – the zero-waste concept the charity flourishes on, the self-sufficiency created through its agro ecosystem, the employability focus on the young adults supported by Sevalaya.

Sevalaya has demonstrated an amazing capacity to help build an optimistic future for the marginalized. The charity pays attention to root causes of challenges in our system, addressing them in significant and measurable ways. As a representative from a corporate, I have found Sevalaya extremely professional and responsive. It has been a great privilege to partner with Sevalaya.

Vidya Durai, Philanthropy & CSR, BNY Mellon India

Our association with Sevalaya blossomed in the early part of 2020, and soon came the COVID pandemic, which gave us a reason to join hands immediately with Sevalaya in addressing the basic needs of families, which had it’s livelihood severely impacted due to the lock-down. We were impressed by Sevalaya’s dedication, speed of response & impeccable execution amidst all odds.

Sevalaya’s vision of serving the underprivileged and improving their quality of life is well aligned with KONE India’s sustainability philosophy. This paves way for a long-term partnership in transforming the lives of the needy.

Wishing Sevalaya many more years of service to the needy and the underprivileged.

Divyashri G R, Revenue Divisional Officer, Sriperumbudur, Kanchipuram District

I visited Sevalaya in 2003-2004 when TCS donated computers to the organisation. Though I have not personally visited Sevalaya since then, I am keeping track of the activities through their monthly newsletters, Annual Reports and social media updates. I am amazed at the growth of Sevalaya. It is tremendous – in terms of the number of beneficiaries, the areas of service and the geographical locations. My best wishes to Sevalaya to grow and reach out to more and more needy people in the society.

Krishnan P R, Senior Vice President, Tata Consultancy Services

Sevalaya is an institution that really touched me, when I visited the school in Thiruninravur. I had the honour of sharing a meal with the students there and could well imagine the kind of effort it takes to keep a couple of thousand students fed every day, so they are alert in class to pick up the lessons. I wish the organisation more strength and even more funds to keep rendering such selfless service to our nation’s not so fortunate children.

I was very happy when Sevalaya made this possible for me last summer in July 2019. During COVID- 19, I came to know of Sevalaya’s various initiatives. We (Anna and I) were happy to reach out on facebook, interact with the followers by going live and playing for them and to campaign for the fund raiser for Sevalaya. We are thankful that we could do our modest bit with everybody’s support.

17ANNUAL REPORT

Last year, a friend of mine connected me to Sevalaya and Mr. Murali when I wanted to do something to support the underprivileged children. Since then I have been working with such children who are not performing well academically and also have behavioural issues, coordinating with the School Headmistress and her dedicated staff.

These children’s inborn strengths and capabilities are identified through a process called “Genetic Brain Profiling”. We then make use of this knowledge along with their personality type and come up with a strategy to improve their self-confidence and self- esteem which in turn we hope will help in improving their overall performance and equip them to face life confidently. Unfortunately there has been a pause in our endeavour due to the Covid virus, but we hope to resume our efforts once normalcy returns.

Bhuvana Pasupathi, Genetic Brain Profiling consultant

My association with Sevalaya began when I came to know about the organisation in 1998 when my husband was working for TCS. We visited the campus then. The children there were smart and happy.

During my visit to the campus again last year, I was amazed to see the growth and to know about the long term vision of Mr.Murali – a free University, for the poor. I was also happy to see organic farming, biogas plant, use of solar energy, health care, vocational training, and quality in education in the campus.

As part of our college Silver jubilee year of graduation, we chose Sevalaya to support a few educational activities. My best wishes to all the children and elders and my regards to all the wonderful volunteers who are selflessly working to make the dream of so many come true.

Amudhavalli B, Donor, PSG Alumni Group

14 years ago, I heard about Sevalaya through a foreigner who had volunteered at the organisation. Meeting Murali and visiting Sevalaya made me realise that this was the right place to support on a long term basis. I am currently supporting the annual education of around 23 kids and created permanent endowment to support the education of 4 kids. I organise fundraiser every year to sponsor our kids in Sevalaya and I tell my friends in US, I can confidently say that our funds go to support the kids instead of adminstrative fees. My wife Aruna and sons Ashwin and Akhil also take part in my fundraising efforts. I have emotional connection with the kids who we sponsor in Sevalaya and will continue to support them which gives me great pride and satisfaction. I love the foundation principle of the organization and continued organization commitment from Murali and Team.

Sevalaya started an evening tuition centre served by two teachers. The support is offered by Narayanan A, a long-time donor of Sevalaya and one of the family members of the Sankari Sastha Trust. Eraharam is the native place of his parents. So they wanted to do some service in that village and have given the space for the tuition centre. 40 students of Stds V to VIII are attending the evening tuition centre run by Sevalaya.

Among them are 14-year-old Ajay M, studying in Std VIII, and his brother Vijay M studying in Std VI in a government aided school 5 KMs away. Their mother passed away and father deserted them. They are taken care of by their grand parents. Both are average in studies, Ajay scores above 50 marks in all subjects, except mathematics where he struggles to get past 42 marks. Says Ajay: “I was not able to understand Maths in school as they take classes at a fast pace. At the tuition centre, I have been given

Facing the COVID-19 challenge

When COVID-19 fears gripped the country mid March, Sevalaya’s instinctive reflex actions were to safeguard the 389 plus lives in its care. 200 orphaned children, 70 elders in the elders’ home, 69 cows in the gaushala at Kasuva centre and 10 elders in the elders’ home at Thanjavur. These residents have nowhere to go. There were 40 resident staff to take care of them. Taking up the challenge, systems were put in place to ensure “zero positive case” status.

A bunch of employees – helpers, kitchen staff and wardens - agreed to stay in the campus: some, separated from their families, and some moving in with their small children. Thanks to them, life goes on in Kasuva and Thanjavur. Shelter, safety, food, physical and mental health– these became the focus.

Moulding confident young women

Every year starting June 2018, 85 girl students of Std VIII have been undergoing training under the GOAL programme of Naz Foundation. The sponsor is Standard Chartered Global Business Services (SCGBS), who has a long association with sports in Sevalaya. Meant to mould independent young women, the programme has trained them to make their own decisions and protect themselves, to solve the problems they face in the society and to smartly tackle crunch situations.

Says 13 year-old Lalitha J, (VIII D) : Through GOAL, I have changed a lot. I used to get angry for small matters. I never used to seriously study. I also had fears. I used to keep away from sports. Will I finish the race? Will I lag behind the bunch? Many such worries. GOAL programme changed it all. Our instructors taught us how to handle emotional blackmail, why we should keep up confidence and be trustworthy, how not to circulate or believe in rumours, how to assert and not be bulldozed. My confidence has grown. Now teacher calls me, if a speech has to be delivered. Recognising my leadership skills, I was elected Home Minister in the hostel. I am also in the Netball team.

The programme has modules on Life Science, Self- Esteem, Health & Hygiene, Girl Rights and Financial Literacy. The girls are trained by 4 qualified and NAZ certified teachers of Sevalaya - Mariyammal S, Abirami P, Poongothai V and Vanmathi D. Focus is also on improving concentration. The new-found confidence to share their personal problems with their respective teachers has eased many adolescent pressures and improved focus on their studies.

As part of the programme, Sevalaya opted for Netball in sports. They have developed more tolerance, team spirit and leadership qualities. The girls participated for the first time in ONNC (One Nation Netball Cup), a tournament held at New Delhi in 2019 along with 18 teams from 10 different states. Sevalaya team won 7 of the 9 matches, some of which featured some international players from Afghanistan.

Transforming Thirukandalam Village

14-year-old, Poongodhai studies from 7 till 9 every morning at home, has her breakfast and leaves for school. A student of Std VIII, she is getting better by the day.

The turning point was September 2019 when Sevalaya initiated Aadharam Project in partnership with Hyundai Glovis. The twin focus was sustainability of water and sanitation.

Till then, her morning routine started with the use of the open toilet near a pond 2 KMs away. For safety, she had to wait for father or mother to accompany her. At times, she would lose a lot of time to get company and would get late for school. If late, she would skip school, rather than be scolded by the teachers. Attending school on empty stomach, the children were unable to concentrate, making them academically backward. Some children would faint, fall sick. Making things worse, the water from the pond was yellowish, and people got sick with cholera and dysentery.

“Thanks to the toilets and RO water plant, and the morning breakfast scheme, we are able to go to school on time”, says Poongodhai. “Our health has improved and we are able to concentrate on our studies, without missing classes. The teacher who used to scold us previously now started saying we are studying properly and are happy with our performance“.

Poongodhai is one of the 1,080 Inhabitants of Annanagar in Thirukandalam Village in Tamilnadu’s Thiruvallur District. Almost all of the 258 families belong to Scheduled Tribes. Majority are daily wage earners working on agricultural fields, rice mills. Annanagar never had roads, electricity, toilets or a hospital.

The water from the village’s nearest pond is not usable. Ponds are contaminated and heavy in iron content, making the villagers perpetually sick. The 500 LPH capacity RO Purifier now fully meets the drinking water needs of the village. The two newly fitted hand pumps come in handy in case of power cuts.

Community hygiene has improved through the toilet facilities added as part of the project.

The project package has three more elements to meet Annanagar’s special needs: Breakfast for its 125 children, 20 solar lights and waste management.

With no proper road or street light, stepping out of homes after dawn used to be a nightmare. In 2017, a child had lost his life after a snake bite. Power cuts being common, 20 solar lights have been installed, boosting villagers confidence.

After creating awareness on the importance of maintaining organic and non-organic waste management, the system is running to plan, with two waste collectors appointed, to collect, segregate and recycle it into manure for agricultural purposes.

An important initiative for community health are the medical camps conducted quarterly. When COVID-19 struck, immediate help in the form of food, for 90 days were reached.

Thanks to the toilets and RO water plant, and the morning breakfast scheme, we are able to go to school on time. Our health has improved and we are able to concentrate on our studies, without missing classes. The teacher who used to scold us previously now started saying we are studying properly and are happy with our performance.Poongodhai, 14, Std VIII

Soon this will be formed as a separate company and hopefully fund many activities of Sevalaya. Natraj R, IPS (Retd) former DGP and current MLA of Mylapore, inaugurated the SevaMart at Mylapore.

Events

Sevalaya revived the celebration of an historical event – Mahakavi Bharathi and Chellammal wedding anniversary. The wedding took place on 27th June, 1897 in Kadayam village, the birth place of Chellammal. The event was celebrated by the locals for few years after Independence but it did not continue for long. The 90th wedding

anniversary was celebrated in 1987 and many Bharathi enthusiasts decided to celebrate it every year. But, somehow it did not happen. Sevalaya took up this task and revived the celebration in 2019, exactly 100 years after the couple left the town for good!

Bharathi – Chellammal’s great grandson Rajkumar Bharathi attended the celebrations with family. Chellamal’s brother’s son, Sundar also attended. Bharathi admirer, Ela Ganesan, was the Chief Guest and the function was attended by more than 1000 people. Sevalaya hopes to celebrate this event, every year.

Ramakrishna Vijayam is a Tamil Magazine published by Sri Ramakrishna Math. This is the first tamil magazine to enter 100th year of publication. There are only four other magazines in India which have crossed 100 years and all of them are published by Sri Ramakrishna Math. To celebrate the centenary of Ramakrishna Vijayam, a program was organized in Sevalaya’s Kasuva centre. Swami Vimurthananda, Manager, Sri Ramakrishna Math, Chennai and popular Tamil writer and journalist Maalan were the Chief Guests. Competitions were conducted for many school and college students on the teachings of Swami Vivekananda. The prizes, sponsored by IDFC First Bank, were distributed at the event to the winners.

Donors

Sevalaya does not receive any Government grant, except for the Integrated Campus project and a portion of children home expense. (Integrated campus project is an initiative of Social welfare department, Government of Tamilnadu, under which 25 senior citizens and 25 destitute children are housed in one campus. Government provides a part of the running expense for this activity. Sevalaya was selected by the Government to run this project in Thiruvallur district). Sevalaya continues to run mostly on donations made by well-wishers. The Government grant is around 3% of the total budget and the rest 97% comes from donors. These donations which form the life blood of the organisation could range from a small one-time amount from an individual to large amounts given regularly by foundations and corporates. The donor could be anyone from a local person who lives a couple of streets away to a Foundation based in the USA or Europe which has heard of and seen the good work being done and the growth achieved by Sevalaya consistently year after year. The organization, on its part, extends its policy of non-discrimination to its donors too. Every donor, small or big, has the same place in our hearts, and receives all periodic communication regarding the activities, successes, financial status and plans. It is our way to keep each and every donor apprised and to ensure transparency. Hence, as a policy, we do not publish a “Major Donors List.”

come under “Right To Information” act, we believe in transparency and on our own accord, we voluntarily publish our financial information, bank details, details about all activities, names of people associated etc. on our website. Donors, well-wishers and any member of the public can access all these data on our website. Sevalaya publishes a monthly Newsletter and an Annual Report which includes the audited Accounts. Both are circulated to all donors and well-wishers. The report is also available on our website www.sevalaya.org.

Moving Forward…

We had prepared a five year plan for the period 2015-2020. As the plan ended this financial year, we had a detailed discussion on the achievements. We could state that we could cover 55 to 60% ground against the plan. Funds availability, staff attrition, delays in Government permissions resulted in 45% work not being completed in five years.

Next five year plan has been drawn for the period 2020-2025. The top 3 goals are

1. To become one of the top 10 NGOs in the country

2. To become self-reliant and

3. To spread the basic values of Sevalaya based on Bharathi, Gandhi and Vivekananda across the country.

Plans have been drawn to implement these goals and teams have been formed. We need support from all of you to achieve these goals.

Few years back we were only present in Thiruvallur district. Now we are spread across Tamilnadu state and Pudhucherry. In the next five years, the goal is to be a national level player.

We have major long term plans as well. An important one among them is to become a free university open only to the orphan, destitute and the poor.

We thank all our sponsors, donors, well-wishers, media, Government officials, visitors, volunteers – all who have contributed to this growth of Sevalaya over the past 32 years. Needless to say, these achievements would not have been possible without the commitment and contributions of the Sevalaya family of 250+ employees and the board of Trustees and Advisors. We believe that Sevalaya is the true implementation of values we have learnt by studying the works of Mahakavi Bharathi, Mahatma Gandhi and Swami Vivekananda. They have been guiding us to face all challenges in the past 32 years. We are sure this guidance will show us the path in the future also.

Thanks & Regards

INDEPENDENT AUDITORS’ REPORTTo The Members, Sevalaya

Opinion In our opinion and to the best of our information and according to the explanations given to us, the financial statement of Sevalaya, for the year ended 31st March 2020, give a true and fair view in conformity with the accounting principles generally accepted in India:a) In the case of Balance sheet, of the state of affairs of Sevalaya as at 31st March 2020. b) In the case of Income and Expenditure account, of the Excess of Expenditure over Income for the year ended on that date; Management’s Responsibility for the Financial Statements Management is responsible for the preparation of the financial statements. This responsibility includes the design, implementation and maintenance of internal control relevant to the preparation of the financial statements that are free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error. Auditors’ Responsibility Our responsibility is to express an opinion on these financial statements based on or audit. We conducted our audit in accordance with the Standards on auditing issued by The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India. Those standards require that we comply with ethical requirements and plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financial statements are free from material misstatement. An audit involves performing procedures to obtain audit evidence about the amounts and the disclosures in the financial statements. The procedures selected depend on the auditors’ judgment, including the assessment of the risks of material misstatement of the financial statements, whether due to fraud or error. In making those risk assessments, the auditor considers internal control relevant to the Trust’s preparation and fair presentation of the financial statements in order to design audit procedures that are appropriate in the circumstances, but not for the purpose of expressing an opinion on the effectiveness of the Trust’s internal control. An audit also includes evaluating the appropriateness of the accounting policies used and the reasonableness of the accounting estimates made by the management, as well as evaluating the overall presentation of the financial statements. We believe that the audit evidence we have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our audit opinion. Report on the Financial Statements We have audited the accompanying financial statements of Sevalaya, which comprise the Balance Sheet as at 31st March 2020, and the Income and Expenditure Account for the year then ended, and a summary of significant accounting policies and other explanatory information.
