SEA THE STARS FILLYSHINES AT BOOK 1 CLOSER

By Emma Berry and Kelsey Riley

NEWMARKET, UKBBRobert Barnett=s famous Time Charter (Ire)

family returned to the limelight on Thursday with a Sea The

Stars (Ire) filly out of the G2 Queen Mary and G2 Lowther S.

winner Best Terms (GB) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) topping Book 1

at 1.5 million gns when sold to Godolphin.

The chestnut filly (lot 411) was consigned for sale by Newsells

Park Stud, where her dam has resided since the sale of the

Barnetts= Fair Winter Farm in 2017. Best Terms, a former

champion 2-year-old filly in England, has already produced a

black-type winner to Sea The Stars, with her 5-year-old daughter

Star Terms (GB) having won the Listed Prix de Thiberville as well

as finishing runner-up in the G2 May Hill S. Another daughter,

Fresh Terms (GB) (New Approach {Ire}), is also a listed winner in

France. The 12-year-old mare is great grand-daughter of the

WHERE STARS ENTWINE

by Tom Frary

Now that Europe is firmly ensconced in autumn, Newmarket=s

Rowley Mile is the stage for some of the season=s most revered

2-year-old encounters and Friday sees the G1 bet365 Fillies=

Mile help sort out the pecking order in the female division.

Topping that category at present is Cheveley Park Stud=s

unbeaten Inspiral (GB) (Frankel {GB}), who was introduced on

the July Course here June 26 before putting the re-opposing

subsequent GI Natalma S. winner Wild Beauty (GB) (Frankel

{GB}) in her place in Sandown=s Listed Star S. July 22 and

following up in the G2 May Hill S. at Doncaster Sept. 9. While

that form is not out of the ordinary, the daughter of the G1 1000

Guineas runner-up Starscope (GB) (Selkirk) has impressed

Frankie Dettori with the style of her performances and he is

quick to lavish praise on the Gosden representative. Cont. p12

Tattersalls October Book 1 Day 3 Cont. from p1

He said after congratulating Sheikh Mohammed on his

purchase, AWe=ve always loved her. The family has been so

good, it goes right the way back to the Athasi (Ire) family and

then Time Charter. Best Terms was great fun on the racecourse

and we=ve always admired Sea The Stars. I love the look of him

and we try to find a stallion of the right size and right

conformation.@

Confirming that Best Terms is now in foal to Wootton Bassett

(GB) with a Kingman (GB) colt foal on the ground, he added with

a smile, AWe were tempted to keep the filly but temptation ran

out a bit earlier. She=s the most athletic yearling we=ve had for

quite some time, and she has a lovely outlook, she=s very

laidback. There seems to be good trade this week with a lots of

breeders buying these well-bred fillies.@

Positive Start To October Sale On a day when Godolphin and Coolmore continued their

strong support of Book 1, they were joined on the leader board

by Sheikha Fatima Bint Hazza Bin Zayed Al Nahyan=s Al Shira=aa

Farm, which has signalled serious intent in its establishment of

an illustrious broodmare band as its Irish base of Meadow Court

Stud on The Curragh. The American participation has been

stronger than ever, led by Mike Ryan, who signed for 15

yearlings for a total of 3,750,000gns, while British agent Alex

Elliott was also busy, with 14 bought for 3,900,000gns.

The sale-topping Sea The Stars filly | Tattersalls

Tattersalls October Book 1 Day 3 Cont.

ABook 1 of last year=s Tattersalls October Yearling Sale was

widely regarded as a sale which showed remarkable resilience in

the face of the well-documented challenges which we all

endured, which makes the gains achieved this week even more

creditable,@ said Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony as the

first major section of the October Sale concluded.

AYear after year Book 1 of the October Yearling Sale showcases

the finest British-, Irish-, French- and German-bred yearlings,

and year after year these yearlings go on to achieve

extraordinary racecourse success on the global stage. Even by

the lofty standards of Book 1, 2021 has been a truly

phenomenal year with the world=s highest-rated 3-year-old, St

Mark=s Basilica, the world=s highest-rated miler Palace Pier, dual

Classic winner Hurricane Lane, Europe=s highest-rated 2-year-old

Native Trail and the highest-rated turf horse in America,

Domestic Spending, all purchased at October Book 1, and it is

this consistent success which brings so many of the world=s

leading buyers to the sale.@

With the clearance rate improving for the sale as a whole to

83% from 79%, 375 yearlings sold across the three days for

86,369,000gns, which was up 5% from last year. In 2019, when

22 more yearlings were sold at Book 1, the aggregate was

102,429,000gns. This year=s sale beat the 2019 median of

150,000gns, coming in at 160,000gns, while the average of

230,317gns was up 3% on 2020 and behind the 2019 figure of

258,008gns.

The final day, which brought the strongest trade, reached a

tally of 31,052,000gns from 125 yearlings sold at a median of

180,000gns (+20%) and average of 248,416gns (-6%).

Mahony continued, AWhile the figures may not have returned

to the dizzy heights of 2019, and the very top of the market has

made an adjustment, the average, median and clearance rate

have all improved significantly and the turnover has also

climbed despite a smaller catalogue.@ Cont. p4

Tattersalls October Book 1 Day 3 Cont.

He added, AParticularly encouraging has been the depth and

diversity amongst the buyers in all sectors of the market. Nine

different buyers have bought yearlings for 750,000gns or more

and in addition to the strong British and Irish participation,

buyers from Abu Dhabi, Australia, Bahrain, China, Dubai, France,

Hong Kong, Japan, Saudi Arabia and the USA have all made

significant contributions.

AParticularly notable has been the powerful American

contingent. They have been a real feature of October Book 1 in

recent years and the extraordinary level of racecourse success

has driven even greater demand with around 50 Book 1

yearlings acquired over the past three days heading across the

Atlantic. Turf racing in America continues to grow and thrive and

American buyers have clearly identified Book 1 of the Tattersalls

October Yearling Sale as the premier source of superior turf

horses.

AIn addition to the major impact of the international buyers, it

has also been rewarding to see that the lucrative ,20,000

Tattersalls October Book 1 Bonus Scheme continues to entice

buyers at all levels of the Book 1 market. Owners in Britain and

Ireland have been rewarded with almost ,7,000,000 in bonus

prize-money since the scheme's inception in 2016 and to see so

many owners, syndicates and trainers busy this week is a tribute

to the enduring appeal of the Book 1 Bonus.

AAbove all, after the rigours of last year, it has been a pleasure

to have welcomed so many people back to Park Paddocks. We

now turn our attention to Books 2, 3 and 4 of the 2021

Tattersalls October Yearling Sale and look forward to sustaining

the momentum established this week at Europe=s premier

yearling sale.@

Waldgeist=s Sister Makes An Entrance

When a Dubawi (Ire) half-sibling to an Arc winner is scheduled

to be first through the ring then it=s a pretty safe bet that the

day will start with a bang. So it proved for the final session of

Book 1 when a sister to Waldgeist (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) stepped

into the spotlight at Tattersalls and was added to an increasingly

impressive list of blue-blooded young females being assembled

for an eventual broodmare band by Al Shira=aa Farms.

Last week at the Goffs Orby Sale, Sheikha Fatima Bint Hazza

Bin Zayed Al Nahyan of Abu Dhabi bought three smart fillies for

i1.1 million and that outlay was extended in Newmarket by

2.91 million gns spent on four yearlings.

Head of that group at 1.25 million gns was lot 336, the

chestnut half-sister not only to four-time Group 1 winner

Waldgeist but also to the group winners Waldlied (GB) (New

Approach {Ire}) and Waldkonig (GB) (Kingman {GB}). Cont. p5

Kieran Lalor | Tattersalls

Tattersalls October Book 1 Day 3 Cont.

All four siblings were bred by Newsells Park Stud in

partnership with Gestut Ammerland from the Monsun (Ger)

mare Waldlerche (GB), herself a

winner of the G3 Prix Penelope.

David Cox conducted the

bidding on behalf Al Shira=aa,

outlasting Simon Mockridge of

Juddmonte, and he later had MV

Magnier as underbidder when

the team also bought lot 369,

Glenvale Stud=s No Nay Never

half-sister to GI Belmont Derby

winner Bolshoi Ballet (Ire)

(Galileo {Ire}), for 925,000gns.

Kieran Lalor, Al Shira=aa=s

Irish-based manager, said, AWe

think we were able to buy her

and the others at reasonable

value. We are a breeding operation first and foremost, but we

do race and we have had a very good year on the track this year

with a couple of fillies, with one in France [Rumi] and another in

the U.S. with Christophe Clement. These fillies will definitely be

retained for long-term breeding.@

He continued, AThe boss has the final say on everything and

she was really keen on this [No Nay Never] filly especially. We=ll

sit down after this and figure out where we are going to send

them. They will mostly be

staying in Europe, but a couple

might go to the U.S. These are

exciting times; it=s very nice to

have these families, they rarely

become available and for us it is

a no-brainer.@

Plus Ca Change For

Newsells Park Newsells Park Stud, leading

vendor at Book 1 for the fourth

consecutive year and sixth time

since 2013, was responsible for

the first three lots into the ring

on Thursday, all from the same family. Following the Dubawi filly

was lot 337, a Kingman (GB) colt and the first foal of the G2 Prix

de Malleret winner Waldlied, being hammered down to Chad

Brown for Klaravich Stables for 425,000gns.

Tattersalls October Book 1 Day 3 Cont.

Next came lot 338, a Sea The Stars (Ire) colt out of Waldnah

(GB) (New Approach {Ire}), a listed-winning half-sister to

Waldgeist=s dam Waldlerche and to the St Leger winner Masked

Marvel (GB) (Montjeu {Ire}).

It has been a year of change for the stud, with Graham

Smith-Bernal buying the Hertfordshire farm in June from the

Jacobs family. In the sale ring, however, it has pretty much been

business as usual.

Reflecting on another successful Book 1 for Newsells Park,

which sold 22 lots for 10,785,000gns, manager Julian Dollar said,

AIt has been a great day=s trade for us. On the first day we had a

very nice filly for a client who sold well but it was sticky enough,

then the second day I thought the prices were fair with no great

result, but today has been very strong.

AThe nice horses made a lot more than I thought they were

going to make and some of our clients have really benefitted

from that. Robert Barnett was absolutely thrilled and he is a

great owner/breeder who has developed that family really well.

He entrusted us with his mares a few years ago when he sold

Fair Winter and he=s a real gentleman so I am thrilled for him

with that result.@

He continued, AWe=ve been lucky for the last few years but we

didn=t have a Shastye to pull out of the hat this time. But I

thought we had some lovely horses and there weren=t really too

many weak ones among the draft.

AObviously we had a very well-bred filly and I am thrilled she

made over a million, in fact if she hadn=t we would have bought

our partner out, but we didn=t even get a bid in. She deserved

that, a beautiful Dubawi half-sister to an Arc winner with that

page. And I=m delighted that she is going to Al Shira=aa Farms as

Kieran Lalor was a colleague of mine in America and was

broodmare manager when I was running Castleton Lyons in

America. He=s come back to Ireland and is now running Meadow

Court Stud and I think he=s bought some very smart fillies with

lovely pedigrees. He=s thinking racing and he=s thinking of the

future and it=s great to see.@

Anthem On Song A day after the announcement of the retirement of his G1

Matron S. winner No Speak Alexander (Ire) (Shalaa {Ire}), Noel

O=Callaghan=s Mountarmstrong Stud enjoyed a good return in

the sale ring through the sale of a Galileo (Ire) colt for 1.1 million

gns to MV Magnier.

The colt=s dam Anthem Alexander (Ire) (Starspangledbanner

{Aus}) had been offered in Book 1 eight years ago but has been

bought back by her breeder at 48,000gns.

This proved to be a fortuitous decision as the half-sister to

Dandy Man (Ire) (Mozart {Ire}) won the following season=s G2

Queen Mary S. in O=Callaghan=s colours when trained by Eddie

Lynam.

AHe=s a proper horse,@ said O=Callaghan of lot 383 as he left the

ring. ALet=s hope he is very lucky for his new people. He=s going

to a proper trainer so he has every chance.@

Galileo fillies will be in vogue the next few years perhaps more

than ever, given the late stallion=s rapidly ascending profile as a

broodmare sire, and Gary Hadden went to 750,000gns to secure

Newsells Park Stud=s homebred Galileo daughter of Aljazzi (GB)

(Shamardal) (lot 365) on Thursday morning. The bay is the first

foal out of Aljazzi, who won the G2 Duke of Cambridge S. and G3

Atalanta S. for Saleh Al Homaizi and Imad Al Sagar and trainer

Marco Botti, and Newsells was able to secure her for 1-million

gns at the 2018 Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale while

the owners= partnership was being dissolved. Hadden is

connected to Craig Bennett=s Merry Fox Stud, which sold a Sea

The Stars (Ire) filly out of Time Control (GB) (Sadler=s Wells) to

Lordship Stud for 680,000gns on Wednesday, but Hadden said

the ownership group of Aljazzi=s filly had not been determined.

AShe is a lovely filly out of a fantastic racemare,@ Hadden said.

AI think in this market fillies are standing out; people see them as

solid investments and they=re not making Galileos anymore. He=s

a fantastic broodmare sire and if she has some racing ability

she=ll be a lovely broodmare.@

Battaash=s Sister To Coolmore The McCartan family=s Ballyphilip Stud has been associated

with a number of top-class sprinters in recent years, including

the immensely popular Battaash (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}), whose

full-brother appeared as lot 379 and sold for 750,000gns to MV

Magnier.

The colt has plenty to live up to as his 7-year-old brother was

twice the winner of the Nunthorpe S. among his four Group 1

wins, but the youngster is already out in front in the looks

department, according to Paul McCartan, who said, AThis guy

was the better-looking one. I have always said that Battaash was

the best-looking horse we had bred, but I think this guy is better.

He is straightforward. Battaash was a lovely horse and not an

unkind horse, but he had his quirks. This colt is more

straightforward."

McCartan, who also bred Godolphin=s top sprinter Harry Angel

(Ire), by the same sire, said, AHe=s a beautiful horse and he=s

gone to a very good home. Anna Law has been very lucky for us,

she has made us plenty of money.@

Now 11, the colt=s dam Anna Law (Ire) (Lawman {Fr}) was an

undistinguished racehorse and was bought from trainer Charlie

Hills for 14,000gns at the end of her 2-year-old season. She has

proved to be an inspired purchase. Her first foal Battaash was

bought as a yearling for 200,000gns by Shadwell, and that same

outfit returned to the well in 2019 when buying his full-sister

Altaayshah (Ire) for 800,000gns in Book 1. She is unraced to

date. Cont. p7

Tattersalls October Book 1 Day 3 Cont.

Now in foal to Blue Point (Ire), Anna Law has a filly foal by

Lope De Vega (Ire). McCartan added, AOf course it would have

been nice to have seen Angus [Gold, Shadwell=s racing manager]

sign the docket, but it is not too bad when Coolmore are signing

and Aidan O'Brien is going to be training.@

Special Alliance Sheikh Mohammed was at Park Paddocks throughout Book 1

and his presence was certainly felt as the leading buyer of the

week with a 9,375,000gns outlay on 15 yearlings. They included

lot 398, the Frankel (GB) colt sold by Kirtlington Stud on behalf

of American celebrity chef and breeder Bobby Flay for

625,000gns.

Flay had bought his dam Auld Alliance (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}), a

half-sister to 2000 Guineas and King George winner Golan (Ire)

and Derby runner-up Tartan Bearer (Ire), from Ballymacoll Stud

back in 2013 and she raced in his

colours the following season

when trained by Graham

Motion. The colt=s 3-year-old

full-brother Modus Operandi

(Ire) won for the Coolmore

partners in May at Navan, while

the 2-year-old, also by Frankel

and named Old School (GB), is

trained for Flay by Todd

Pletcher.

ARight from the word go he=s

been very nice,@ said Kirtlington

Stud=s Chris Budgett. "I=ve been

fortunate enough to look after

quite a lot of good horses over

my life but there are some that are just that little bit extra

special and I would put him in that category. Frankel has had a

great year and the right team have bought him from that point

of view. If everything goes well I would hope that he becomes a

top-class racehorse.@

He added, AThe mare is owned by Bobby Flay, who had her in

Ireland and then James Delahooke asked if I could look after her.

I have just had my first ever conversation with Bobby about half

an hour ago and he=s a charming man. The mare foaled with us

and the colt has never put a foot wrong all the way through.

He=s just a cracking individual.@

Frankel=s 16 yearlings sold in Book 1 returned an average of

373,438gns, and there were some decent results from the first

crop of his son Cracksman (GB), notably via lot 457. The filly,

bred and sold as a foal by Ringfort Stud for 95,000gns, had

received a decent update between sales as she is a half-sister to

Fearby (Ire) (Havana Gold {Ire}), whose busy juvenile season has

included a listed win, second in the G3 Molecomb S., and a

third-place finish in the G2 Mill Reef S. Returned to the ring by

pinhooker Brendan Holland of Grove Stud, the daughter of

Cracksman and the One Cool Cat mare Coolminx (Ire) was sold

for 410,000gns to Arthur Hoyeau of Windfield Bloodstock.

Derek Veitch of Ringfort Stud had his own decent yearling

touch a little later on when selling lot 472, a daughter of

Profitable (Ire), for 425,000gns to Oliver St Lawrence. The filly=s

dam Cynthiana (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}), from the family of Arc winner

Rail Link (GB), was bought as a 5-year-old at Arqana for just

i4,000. Her first foal Rebel Town (Ire) (Dawn Approach {Ire})

was a winner in Japan last year for Godolphin.

Bridlewood, Madaket Join American Fray American trainer Jonathan Thomas and John Panagot, racing

manager to prominent owner Sol Kumin, visited Park Paddocks

for the first time this week and

came away with three fillies to

repatriate to the U.S. on behalf

of Kumin=s Madaket Stables and

John Malone=s Bridlewood Farm.

Malone is also the owner of

Ballylinch Stud.

The Bridlewood/Madaket

purchases were a Sea The Stars

(Ire) filly who is the first foal out

of the unraced Newton=s Angel

(Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) from the

family of group winners like

Dress Rehearsal (Ire), Muthmir

(Ire) and My Titania (Ire) (lot

176); a Bungleinthejungle (Ire)

half-sister to the listed-winning and G1 Nunthorpe S. second

Que Amoro (Ire) (Es Que Love {Ire}) (lot 185); and a Lope De

Vega (Ire) granddaughter of the dual Group 3 winner Shemima

(GB) (Dalakhani {Ire}), whose third dam is the G1 Prix de Diane

scorer Shemaka (Ire) (lot 270).

AWe had a couple orders for fillies and we thought we=d come

over and investigate the landscape,@ Thomas explained. AWe=re

not pioneering anything, we=re following in the footsteps of

some people that have been very successful. We=re finding an

abundance of quality and I think there=s very good value for the

calibre of horse that there is here. We=ve probably shortlisted

and liked things that are a little bit above what we have to

spend, but we got three nice horses that vetted well and are

very correct and nice movers and have enough pedigree to take

us somewhere. We=re getting our feet wet, and it=s been a very

enjoyable experience.@ Cont. p9

SESSION TOPPERS

Tattersalls October Book 1 Day 3 Cont.

Thomas, who is best known thus far for training the 2018 GI

Travers S. and GI Belmont Derby Invitational winner Catholic Boy

(More Than Ready), said he found it relatively straightforward to

buy the horses he liked this week.

AWe=ll walk away feeling like we got some value, especially on

the heels of Keeneland; it seemed like there was some crazy

money for some lesser animals, to me,@ he said. AThere was a

voracious appetite for a horse at Keeneland. As you=re in the

earlier books you=re contending with super groups, and as you

get down into the latter books there are still good horses, but

then you=re in this pinhooking frenzy. There is an interesting

void here; we=re used to contending with pinhookers at the

$150,000, $200,000 level, and that isn=t the case here. There are

trainers and people looking for racehorses, so that=s been

interesting. What we=ve bought, we=ve found them easy to buy.

It=s been an interesting market. I=m a sucker anyway for these

really good, free-moving grass horses, so I=m like a kid in a candy

store.@

Thomas said he came to Park Paddocks with an open mind as

to what he might take home.

AWe didn=t pigeonhole ourselves as far as pedigree,@ he noted.

AThe obvious ones we would leave out would be if they=d need

two miles, because there are no real options for them in the U.S.

We=re trying to find horses that look like what they were made

to be on paper and, most importantly, fall within our budget.

We vetted a lot, I=d say we vetted on average 20 to 25 a day,

and just kind of let the chips fall. Most of them went above what

we expected and very few went for less, and then the handful

we got fell within our price range.@

John Malone, an American businessman concentrated in the

media sector, purchased Bridlewood Farm in Ocala, Florida in

2013 and Ballylinch in Co. Kilkenny the following year, and

Thomas said the purchases will be broken in at Ballylinch before

being exported to the U.S.

AWe have a sister farm in Ireland, Ballylinch, and we thought it

would be interesting to send them to Ballylinch to get started

and maybe come home sometime after the new year,@ he said.

sister Group 3 winner Volcanic Sky (GB), with this year=s G2 UAE

Derby winner Rebel=s Romance (Ire) also appearing under the

second dam.

BBA Ireland was the name on the ticket when this colt flew

under the radar at 34,000gns at the Tattersalls December Foal

Sale. Wins in this year=s GI Canadian International and G2 Dubai

City Of Gold S. by his elder and similarly-bred half-brother

Walton Street (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}) meant that he could go

unnoticed no more, and he proved an excellent pinhook on

Thursday.

446 c Kodiac (GB) Champagne Or Water (Ire) 180,000

Consigned by Redpender Stud

Purchased by Mike Ryan, Agent

Another good pinhook for the Murphy Family of Redpender

Stud, this colt out of the listed-winning Champagne Or Water

(Ire) (Captain Rio {GB}) was an 85,000gns purchase at last year=s

Tattersalls December Foal Sale.

457 f Cracksman (GB) Coolminx (Ire) 410,000

Consigned by Grove Stud

Purchased by Windfield Bloodstock

Brendan Holland=s Grove Stud spent 95,000gns on this first-

crop daughter of Cracksman at Tattersalls December last year.

At the time there were just three black-type horses on the page,

but those included the listed-placed dam Coolminx (Ire) (One

Cool Cat) and her half-sister, the Grade II-winning Beau Recall

(Ire) (Sir Prancealot {Ire}). This filly=s 2-year-old half-sister Fearby

(Ire) (Havana Gold {Ire}) became the fourth black-type horse on

the page with a win in this season=s Listed Dragon S., thus

boosting her sister=s value significantly.

458 c Camelot (GB) Coppertop (Ire) 340,000

Consigned by Mountain View Stud

Purchased by Blandford Bloodstock

This full-brother to G3 Concorde S. winner Current Option (Ire)

was signed for by Michael Fitzpatrick of JC Bloodstock for

i225,000 at Goffs November.

461 f Mehmas (Ire) Country Madam (Ire) 250,000

Consigned by Mountain View Stud

Purchased by Mike Ryan Agent

This filly, who is out of an unraced half-sister to multiple

group-winning sprinter and young sire Invincible Army (Ire), was

a 75,000gns foal, and thus provided an excellent quickfire

pinhooking double for the teams behind Rory Mahon=s

Mountain View Stud and Michael Fitzpatrick=s JC Bloodstock.

472 f Profitable (Ire) Cynthiana (Fr) 425,000

Consigned by Ringfort Stud

Purchased by Oliver St Lawrence Bloodstock

The placed Cynthiana (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) was a mere i4,000

purchase from the Arqana February Sale in 2017. Her first foal, a

colt by Dawn Approach (Ire), was bought by Paca Paca Farm for

i38,000 at Goffs November in 2018 and this colt, her second to

go through a ring, vaulted her to a different level.

478 f Bated Breath (GB) Darling Grace (GB) 230,000

Consigned by Taroka Stud

Purchased by Stephen Hillen Bloodstock

Canirola Bloodstock signed for this full-sister to the GIII

Wild Beauty | Michael Burns/WEG

Magical Lagoon | Racingfotos.com

Where Stars Entwine Cont. from p1

Operating at a scarcely-believable 40% strike rate in worldwide

Group and Grade I races this year, Frankie is looking for a

seventh win in the race that gave him his second career top-

level victory 31 years ago.

AI was really taken by her at Sandown. She won really well and

I later rode the horse that finished second in that race, Wild

Beauty, to win next time out in Canada so that is good form,@ he

said. AShe has done nothing wrong so far and she is taking the

usual progression after winning a Group 2 to have a go at a

Group 1. She has got a great physique and lots of scope and she

is not the finished article by any means. She is kind and talented

and we expect her to progress over the winter. It is all positive

stuff.@

It has been a while since Cheveley Park have had as hot a

Guineas prospect to look forward to and managing director

Chris Richardson is hoping Inspiral stays on track here. AShe=s

done everything right so far and is a lovely filly,@ he said. AShe=s

working well, but this is a big step up and she=ll be racing on

some rain-softened ground which she hasn=t encountered

before. Her mother went on it and what will be will be. Dreams

may be shattered, but we may have even bigger dreams for next

year if all goes our way.@

Also unbeaten is Qatar Racing=s G3 Prestige S. winner Mise En

Scene (GB) (Siyouni {Fr}), who represents the St Mark=s Basilica

cross and who has impressed with the manner of her displays on

debut at Haydock July 2 and in that Goodwood contest Aug. 28.

In the Prestige, she had the May Hill runner-up Prosperous

Voyage (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) back in third and the subsequent G2

Rockfel S. winner Hello You (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) in fourth

and is within range of the favourite on that evidence. AI=m really

looking forward to her,@ Oisin Murphy said. AI think the world of

Inspiral and she will probably be hard to beat, but Mise En Scene

is a beautiful filly.@

Trainer James Ferguson added, AAfter Goodwood, the first

thing Oisin said was that she needs a mile. She did a nice piece

of work on the racecourse and she seemed to handle it fine.

Oisin rode her very coolly at Goodwood and if he wanted to he

could have got there quicker. He was aware he was going to get

there and gave her a beautiful ride, but I think with another

furlong she would have gone again.@

From Ireland are Zhang Yuesheng=s Aug. 27 G3 Flame of Tara S.

winner Magical Lagoon (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Ballydoyle=s Sept.

26 G3 Weld Park S. scorer Concert Hall (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}).

Jessica Harrington has waited with Magical Lagoon since that

Curragh contest and arrives with a fresh filly. AI=m very excited

about running her. She=s a lovely filly,@ she said. AI probably

would have been more worried if the ground had been good-to-

firm. She won at The Curragh and I think the ground that day

was yielding. They=ve all got to run down that hill and keep

themselves balanced, but she=s a very well-balanced filly and she

did run at Naas on debut which has a fair few ridges down the

back and she seemed to cope with that well. She=s a big filly and

it=s just taken a bit of time to get her into shape and her fitness

up to the right level. Ultimately, I think she=ll probably end up

being a mile-and-a-half filly.@

Concert Hall is a daughter of Was (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and will

be looking to provide Aidan O=Brien with a sixth renewal. AShe=s

been improving with every run,@ he said. AWe always thought

she=d stay further than a mile and she has seen the seven

furlongs out really well in her last few races. She=ll be happy that

the ground is nice. That=s in her favour.@

Despite being comprehensively beaten by Inspiral in the Star S.

and finding Majestic Glory (GB) (Frankel {GB}) a length too

strong in the July Course=s G3 Sweet Solera S. Aug. 7, Wild

Beauty is the Charlie Appleby representative and it will be

interesting to see whether her Canadian excursion will aid her

cause here. Cont. p13

AWe were delighted to see Wild Beauty win a Grade I in

Canada, when she improved for the step up to a mile,@ he said.

AShe has taken that race well and goes into this with plenty of

experience at a high level.@

Oh So Sharp Could Give Classic Pointers Also on the card is the seven-furlong G3 Godolphin Lifetime

(GB) (Frankel {GB}) but which has some Classic wannabes

including Team Valor and Gary Barber=s Sept. 2 G3 Dick Poole

Fillies= S. runner-up Pearl Glory (Ire) (Cotai Glory {GB}) and

Andrew Rosen=s same-card Salisbury maiden winner Good

American (GB) (American Pharoah). Pearl Glory=s trainer Kevin

Philippart De Foy is looking forward to stepping up his filly from

six furlongs and said, AShe=s been doing very well since the Dick

Poole. The filly is in good form and it looked like she wanted a

step up in trip last time out, so we are trying the seven furlongs

this time. I think she will handle Newmarket fine, but she

wouldn=t want the ground to be too soft. I hope it dries a bit.@

Challenge In The Cards For Elders Away from the juveniles, the G2 Godolphin Stud & Stable Staff

Awards Challenge S. which used to be part of the old Champions

Day at Newmarket offers the opportunity for some of the year=s

Anearly horses@ in the seven-furlong category to shine. Of the

Godolphin duo, William Buick has opted for the mercurial Al

Suhail (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), whose four runs in Newmarket

include a second in the 2019 G3 Autumn S. and a career-best

six-length success on similar ground in the Listed Sir Henry Cecil

S. last July.

AAl Suhail lacks a bit of consistency, but has taken each run

well this year and if he produces his best form should be bang

there,@ Charlie Appleby said of the 4-year-old, whose opponents

include Michael Pescod=s G2 Champagne S. and G3 Greenham S.

TUMBLER BOUNDS TO TDN RISING

STARDOM IN FRANCE by Sean Cronin

Carlos Laffon-Parias trainee Tumbler (Fr) (Kingman {GB}), a

hitherto untested homebred sporting the colours of Alain and

Gerard Wertheimer, was eclipsed for favouritism in the betting,

but opened up with an impressive daylight rout of five rivals in

Thursday=s Prix As d=Atout, a seven-furlong heat for unraced 2-

year-old colts and geldings, at Saint-Cloud. The 17-5 chance was

swiftly into stride and settled into a smooth rhythm racing third,

four lengths off the pace, through halfway. Sent wide with the

field into the straight, he quickened in taking fashion to sweep

by Heatherwood (Fr) (Birchwood {Ire}) passing the two pole and

powered clear in style once easing underneath the stands= side

rail with 300 metres remaining. Tumbler stretched out to a 10-

length advantage from Heatherwood at the line, earning a >TDN

Rising Star= on debut.

AHe is a colt who has worked very well in the mornings at

home and we were confident beforehand, but it=s never easy to

know the level of the others in these [debutants=] races,@

declared Laffon-Parias. AHe shows a lot of character and we

must see how he takes his race before deciding if we run again

this year. I am hopeful he will be better than his [stakes-placed

half-] brothers Twist and Kertez.@

LIFE IN MOTION JOINS THE RISING STAR

RANKS AT SAINT-CLOUD Following on where the colt Tumbler (Fr) (Kingman {GB}) had

left off at Saint-Cloud on Thursday, Godolphin=s filly Life in

Motion (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) earned TDN Rising Star status

in the Prix Tenebreuse also for newcomers over seven furlongs.

Settled in fourth early on the testing ground by Mickael

Barzalona, the daughter of the G1 Prix Saint-Alary Wavering (Ire)

(Refuse To Bend {Ire}) arrived on the front end full of running

with 1 1/2 furlongs remaining. Pushed out from there, the Andre

Fabre-trained 7-10 favourite was able to secure a facile five-

length success from Indian Wish (Fr) (The Grey Gatsby {Ire}),

with Roselyne (Fr) (Dariyan {Fr}) a further three lengths away in

third as they finished strung out.

AShe is still very immature, but goes to great lengths to do

things right and I really liked her way of doing things,@ said

winning rider Mickael Barzalona. AWe could have won more

easily, but she was on and off the bit in behind the leading

horses. I allowed her to relax and let her come back to me in her

own time. Once we quickened to the front, I didn=t look back to

see how far she won by and she still had plenty in reserve at the

line.@

The dam has also produced the G3 Prix de Flore runner-up

Switching (Street Cry {Ire}) and her G3 Prix Chloe-placed

full-sister Flowrider, who was fourth in the Saint-Alary. The

second dam Summertime Legacy (GB) (Darshaan {GB}) took the

G3 Prix des Reservoirs and was third in the Saint-Alary herself

before also producing the former TDN Rising Star and G1

Criterium de Saint-Cloud winner Mandaean (GB) (Manduro

{Ger}). Her daughter Winters Moon (Ire) (New Approach {Ire})

was third in the G1 Fillies Mile before providing these

connections with the G1 Prix Morny and G1 Middle Park S. hero

Earthlight (Ire) (Shamardal), while another of Wavering=s half-

sisters Lavender and Lace (GB) (Barathea {Ire} is responsible for

the G2 Superlative S. third Maxi Boy (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}).

Life In Motion, who becomes the 13th TDN Rising Star for his

sire, is followed by a yearling son of Shamardal.

"On his last start in Cologne he was [third] behind Alpinista

UK RULES OF RACING CHANGES CONFIRMED

BY BHA Several changes to the British Rules of Racing were confirmed

by the British Horseracing Authority on Thursday. These

changes, which will come into effect in the coming months,

were approved by the BHA Board, following engagement with

and feedback from participants and stakeholders. The changes

are as follows:

$ All horses entered to run in a race in Britain must be signed

out of the human food chain via its passport by Jan. 1,

2022.

$ The UK=s equine influenza vaccination requirements were

updated to bring them in line with other European racing

nations.

$ The rules regarding bisphosphonates were updated to

bring them in line with other European racing nations.

For more information on these changes to the Rules of Racing,

please click here.

James Given, Director of Equine Health and Welfare for the

BHA, said, AThe sport=s Veterinary Committee made the decision

to exclude racehorses who run in Britain from the food chain in

January of this year. It was subsequently put out to consultation

with the racing industry prior to being approved by the Rules

Committee and finally by the BHA Board in September.

ABritish racing has in place a euthanasia code of practice to aid

trainers and owners with end-of-life decisions. The guidance is

clear that whenever possible, euthanasia should be performed

at home or in suitable surroundings.

AThe transporting of horses to an abattoir to be sold for

consumption should not, in my view, be classed as euthanasia

and is not an approach that we should tolerate in our sport,

which is why a rule preventing this practice is a positive step. I

FIRST-SEASON SIRESWITH RUNNERS

CLAIMING PROCESS STREAMLINED BY HRI A streamlining of the claiming process for Irish claiming races,

to speed up post-race procedures, has been instituted by Horse

Racing Ireland and the new regulations will go into effect on

Nov. 2. Pre-authorisation on the day of the race will be required

for all potential claimants. The claimant=s contact details, the

name of the designated trainer for the horse they wish to claim,

the name of the person responsible for collecting and

transporting the claimed horse and the value of the horse they

wish to claim should be submitted to Horse Racing Ireland up to

one hour before the scheduled race time. Pre-authorisation can

be done in two ways: by completing the online pre-authorisation

form or by telephoning the client accounts department of HRI.

For more information on the new procedures, please visit the

Horse Racing Ireland website.

Jason Morris, HRI=s Director of Racing, said, AThe popularity of

claiming races continues to grow as a medium for purchasing

horses and we have seen a huge increase in the volume of

activity, with upwards of 30 claims being submitted in races on

occasions. This can lead to considerable delays in the post-race

processing and the announcement of the successful claims.

AThe changes to the regulations announced today will

streamline the process for everyone involved and will also

ensure the welfare of claimed horses as they transfer between

trainers. The time between the race being run and the

announcement of successful claims will be reduced, removing

any ambiguity of who is responsible for the welfare of the horse

in the period after the race.

AIt is important to note that pre-authorisation must be sought

each time a person intends to make a claim and that those

wishing to proceed with their claim must contact the client

accounts department of HRI after the race is run. No claim will

be accepted after the race without pre-authorisation.@

Portland Sky winning the G1 Oakleight Plate | Widden Stud

WIDDEN STUD SECURESPORTLAND SKY

by Richard Edmunds

Already boasting nine Group 1-winning sprinters across their

two-state stallion line-up, Widden Stud has secured another

elite speedster for the 2022 breeding season.

Portland Sky, the first Group 1 winner for his outstanding sire

Deep Field, has reached the end of a brief but blistering

racetrack career and will take up stud duties at Widden next

spring.

AIt=s always a very exciting time when you secure a new

stallion, and particularly when that stallion is a Group 1-winning

sprinter,@ Widden owner and proprietor Antony Thompson told

TDN AusNZ on Thursday evening.

AThat=s been a recipe for success at Widden for a number of

years now, and Portland Sky is a horse that fits right in that

sweet spot. He=s a very exciting horse who we think will be an

outstanding addition to our roster in either the Hunter Valley or

Victoria.

AHe=s from a sire line we have the utmost respect for and is the

best colt by Northern Meteor=s top-class sire son Deep Field.

He=s a masculine, good-looking horse with elite Group 1

sprinting form.

AHe would fit very well into either of our two rosters. I think

he=d be very, very popular in the Hunter, where Deep Field has

such great popularity and a lot of breeders are always looking

for a good-looking, fast horse.

ABut, on the other hand, he=s a Victorian horse, and Victoria

was the stage for his biggest racetrack successes, so we have no

doubt that he would be very well received there as well. We will

weigh up our options and make a decision in time as to where

we think he=ll be best suited.

AWe=ll also work through his stud fee in the early part of next

year, but with Deep Field now standing for $88,000, we=re

looking forward to offering breeders access to his fastest son at

a very competitive price.@

Speedy and Impressive Career Portland Sky recorded four impressive victories in a 10-start

career, stepping up to the elite level in the second half of his

3-year-old season with a dead-heat victory in the G1 Oakleigh

Plate alongside Celebrity Queen (Redoute=s Choice), followed by

a gallant second to the super-talented Masked Crusader

(Toronado {Ire}) in the William Reid S.

APortland Sky had been on our radar from quite an early stage

in his impressive racing career,@ Thompson said. AWe=ve really

enjoyed getting to know Matt Laurie (trainer) and his team

better throughout this whole process.

AAfter he won the Oakleigh Plate earlier in the year, we were

very close to getting a deal done, but it didn=t quite work out at

that stage. The owners wanted to continue to race on and really

enjoy the experience that they were having with such a quality

racehorse.

ABut we=ve kept in close contact ever since then, and as soon

as the opportunity arose and Matt told us that the horse was

available, we were delighted to jump at the opportunity.@

Portland Sky is one of only four 3-year-old colts to win the

Oakleigh Plate in the 21st century, following on from star sires

Fastnet Rock in 2005, Snitzel in 2006 and Starspangledbanner in

2010.

AA look at the honour roll tells you it takes an exceptional

3-year-old to win the Oakleigh Plate,@ Thompson said.

AFurthermore, Portland Sky defeated Anders, Dirty Work and

Hanseatic that day, all of which have proven to be extremely

popular freshman stallions with breeders this season.@

Thompson was also highly impressed by Portland Sky=s

runner-up finish in the William Reid S. at Moonee Valley, in

which he finished 2.5l adrift of Masked Crusader but ahead of

the likes of Libertini (I Am Invincible), September Run (Exceed

And Excel), Flit (Medaglia D=Oro {USA}), Kementari (Lonhro),

Brooklyn Hustle (Starspangledbanner), Swats That (Shamus

Award) and Pippie (Written Tycoon).

AThe William Reid was a crack field and tellingly, Portland Sky

beat home fellow 3-year-olds September Run and Swats That,

who ran the quinella in the Coolmore Stud S. at Flemington

during the spring,@ Thompson said.

Portland Sky has also been a two-time winner at Group 3 level,

capturing the Red Anchor S. at Moonee Valley last October

before defeating Aysar (Deep Field) and Tagaloa (Lord Kanaloa

{Jpn}) in the Manfred S. at Caulfield in January.

AInterestingly, Widden sire Nicconi won the Manfred S. before

his G1 Galaxy win as a 3-year-old against the older division,@

Thompson said. AWe=ve found that colts with the ability to beat

open-age gallopers is a great recipe for stud success.@

A Special Horse for Laurie Laurie paid $85,000 to secure Portland Sky from the draft of

Alwyn Park Stud at the 2019 Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale,

and he believes the star sprinter--who followed on from Escado

(Casino Prince) in the 2013 South Australian Derby to give him a

second taste of Group 1 success in his training career--has the

makings of a quality stallion.

AHe is a particularly good-looking horse, a magnificent animal

and he=s definitely got the right attitude,@ Laurie said.

AI was offered big money early days as a young horse off his

very first trial, but it wasn=t enough--it wasn=t anywhere near

enough! We had a big opinion of this horse right from the

beginning.

AAlthough there has been interest from a number of parties, I

am thrilled that Portland Sky will become resident of a stud with

Widden=s history and status as one of Australia=s most iconic

farms.

APortland Sky has been a special horse for myself, our team

and of course, his owners. Not being breeders ourselves, our

first goal was to ensure he went to a farm where he would be

given every opportunity to excel in the breeding shed.@

Widden will be offering shares and lifetime breeding rights in

Portland Sky. His fee will be announced next year.

CORNICHE PUTSSTONEHAVEN ONASCENDING ROAD

by Chris McGrath

We've all seen those old thrillers where the sports car is

twisting along a road cut into a coastal cliff, and suddenly one of

the wheels is spinning over the sea far below. Well, that's pretty

much how it feels when a commercial breeder decides to bring

home a Book 1 yearling at $385,000. In both cases, you're

putting an awful lot of trust in horsepower, admittedly in its

sleekest form, getting you back on the road. Unlike Cary Grant in

North By Northwest, however, you don't even have the excuse

that someone has first poured a bottle of bourbon down your

throat.

In the case of a Quality Road colt offered by Stonehaven

Steadings at the 2020 September Sale, on behalf of co-breeder

Bart Evans, the road was not just regained, but has opened up a

spectacular new vista.

First the team got the de Meric family behind the wheel: Nick

de Meric loved the horse, took 30%, thought he'd flourish in

their program. Eight months later, after a :10 flat breeze, the

September reject topped OBS April at $1.5 million, sold to

Speedway Stables (with the ever-sage counsel of Marette

Farrell).

ZULUETA JOINS GROWING LIST OF

PLEA-CHANGERS IN DOPING CASEBy T.D. Thornton

Marcos Zulueta, the now-barred Thoroughbred trainer facing

two felony charges in the alleged nationwide horse-doping

conspiracy case, appears on the verge of joining the growing list

of defendants flipping their initial "not guilty" pleas to "guilty."

On Thursday, Zulueta, formerly based in the mid-Atlantic

region, was granted an Oct. 15 change-of-plea hearing in United

States District Court (Southern District of New York).

If Zulueta does indeed end up pleading guilty, his flip will be

the eighth in the wide-ranging case that initially included 28

defendants listed in the original indictment from March 2020.

Corniche & his dam Wasted Tears | Aidan O'Meara

Stonehaven cont. from p1

Then, a month or so ago, even as the Stonehaven team was

preparing their next September consignment, the Quality Road

colt made his debut for Bob Baffert at Del Mar. He romped to

the crop's highest Beyer to date, an automatic 'TDN Rising Star.'

It was a timely showcase for a farm owned by Jeff and Chiquita

Reddoch, and run with the help of their daughter Leah and her

husband Aidan O'Meara. The Reddochs had made a flying start

at Stonehaven, previously part of Saxony Farm, as breeders of

2012 champion juvenile Shanghai Bobby (Harlan's Holiday). Now

here was confirmation that Stonehaven could raise a horse not

just to sell for big money, but to run for it too. That can only

have encouraged a Talla Racing and West Point Thoroughbreds

partnership when, just nine days later, they signed a very similar

docket--at $1.55 million--for a Justify colt out of True Feelings

(Latent Heat).

All parties could take heart, then, when, last week, Baffert

bumped the star graduate of the farm's previous cycle straight

into Grade I company for the American Pharoah S. For this colt,

of course, is none other than Corniche: cleverly named for

precisely those giddy coastal routes, with the elements of

engineering and water respectively suggested by Quality Road

and the 16-year-old dam Wasted Tears (Najran), who was bred,

owned and trained by Evans to win half a dozen graded stakes.

"It's been a long process, since that cold February morning

when you had a hold of his front legs pulling him out of his

mamma," reflects O'Meara. "When you've been through that

whole process, raising them on the farm, it's always a

bittersweet moment when you get back from the sale and see

their paddocks standing empty. Yes, you know they've gone into

good hands. But even bringing $1.5 million at a 2-year-old sale

gives you no guarantee of success.

Aidan & Leah O'Meara | Keeneland

Stonehaven cont.

O'Meara continued, ASo the way this horse has stood up to

every question he's been asked--first going through our

program, and then the de Merics', and then to breeze like he

did, and now to come through as the kind of racehorse he's

turning into--has just been phenomenal to see."

The problem, last September, had been drawing Hip 10 in a

sale so exposed to the unprecedented uncertainties of the

pandemic. The partners had to choose: roll with the punches, or

hold their ground and fight back?

"Obviously we're biased," Leah O'Meara accepts. "But we

thought we knew what we had. And, honestly, that ended up

giving us an opportunity out of what was potentially a pretty bad

situation. We're just so thankful that the de Merics had faith in

the horse. They did a

fantastic job with him, and

then Marette and her

clients appreciated him for

what he was. We did

everything we could, but

after that there's been a

whole group of people that

has brought him to where

he is now."

"In some ways, it was a

no-brainer," Aidan

O'Meara says. "But at the

same time, it was tough to

RNA one of your best

yearlings, at that kind of

money, when you couldn't

know what was coming

round the corner. So

seeing the whole vibe surrounding the horse, when we went

down to the sale [in Ocala], was a special moment. Anyone

who'd ever bought a serious 2-year-old was vetting him. So of

course you start to get excited, but nobody could ever have

expected him to go to the point he did."

For Corniche to vindicate both his price and his upbringing,

either side of the auction, vividly compounded the momentum

achieved by the farm at the September Sale-when in the top 10

consignors by average, and as high as third among those trading

10 or more yearlings. A gross of $5.6 million for 19 hips sold (of

20 offered) generated an average yield of $294,737.

Besides their big score, they also sold another Justify colt (out

of the Bernardini mare Venetian Sonata) in Book 1 for $600,000,

and fillies by City Of Light and Uncle Mo for $500,000 and

$425,000. And then there was the next yearling out of

Corniche's dam, a filly by Mendelssohn, a $750,000 buyout by

Evans--a cherished partner since being introduced to the farm

by manager Colby Marks.

"I said to Bart, 'You might want to think about buying this one,

because you might not get another shot at a filly,'" recalls Jeff

Reddoch. "Bart's a legendary horseman himself and has been so

great to work with. This was a fantastic filly and we're so proud

and happy that he bought her."

But the headlines went to the colt that brought Justify his first

seven-figure sale in the

U.S., despite having lurked

in Book 2.

"We had these two

beautiful Justify colts and

really it was a toss of a coin

which would go in Book 1,"

Aidan O'Meara recalls.

"But book placement is a

very important part of our

decision-making process,

and the two of them had

dams that were very close

alphabetically, T and V, so

it was conceivable that we

might have found

ourselves in the first 20

hips with our two best

colts.@

He continued, "So we were very happy to put him in Book 2. I

suppose as a little bit the bigger and stronger of the two, he just

really blossomed those last two and a half months. And he did

show like a beast out there: just this magnificent powerhouse of

a walk to him, everybody hanging onto the big beautiful

presence. And just got better and better, you could see the class

coming out more every day. You never know until you get out

there, how they're going to react, especially colts being with a

bunch of fillies. But he just thrived on the whole environment."

The O'Meara's, Marette Farrell & Nick de Meric

after Corniche sold at OBS | Jessica Martini

Stonehaven cont.

One way or another, then, the stars have certainly aligned

over Stonehaven this past month. And while the team is far too

seasoned to be tempted into any

complacency, it does feel like

something of a turning point--

even if those must be negotiated

with care when driving along a

corniche!

"It does feel like it's been a

watershed month," concedes

Aidan O'Meara. "It's been

fantastic, and obviously we're very

proud of the crew here. We do try

to do things in a particular way, so

it feels like a great validation for

our program."

And that's just what is so

interesting, whenever things come

together for one of many

operations all striving to achieve much the same ends. Because

everyone, no matter how respectful of the opposition, must

believe that they are placing a worthwhile emphasis on

something that sets them apart.

Aidan O'Meara responds: "Well, I think the foundation we're

working on here is the land, which has a tremendous history.

Four champions were raised here before we ever came on the

scene, and then we got lucky right

out of the gate with Shanghai

Bobby. And we're also trying to

blend old school horsemanship

with the best of what medicine

and technology has to offer. At

the end of the day, you're trying

to raise a racehorse. With the way

the sales environment is

nowadays, I think people tend to

get a little bit paranoid about

what might show up on x-rays.

Maybe they don't let young

horses do what they need to do,

living that rough-n-tumble life in

the paddocks. We try to do that as

much as we can. Okay, so

sometimes there might be a little

bit of price to pay on an x-ray or two. But that's one worth

paying, in the long term, if you want the reputation of a farm

that will give you the best possible opportunity of coming out

the other end with a racehorse." Cont. p6

Stonehaven cont.

That same priority, "run", also governs broodmare

recruitment.

"We like a filly that has shown stakes caliber on the racetrack,"

Aidan O'Meara explains. "Sometimes it won't be super obvious.

Like Venetian Sonata, she was a sneaky-good filly: didn't have

black-type, but had been right on top of the placings in stakes

races, with a huge female family backing her up."

She was recruited for $170,000 at the 2013 Keeneland January

Sale, just a few weeks after True Feelings, runner-up in the GIII

Schuylerville S. in her youth, had entered the fold for $210,000

at the November Sale.

"We'll be forgiving enough on a broodmare sire if there's

depth to the family, and if the mare had quality on the track

herself," Aidan O'Meara reasons. "And even be fairly forgiving

on physique. There's a lot of good mares out there that don't

have a particularly pretty front end on them, and we've a couple

here that might scare you in the sales ring, but they have thrown

fantastic-looking babies."

Nobody, equally, will be more heedful than Aidan O'Meara of

the sire part of the equation. For the Irishman spent 20 years as

stallion manager at Hill 'n' Dale before transferring to his in-laws'

operation in 2017.

"In some ways it's the biggest factor that comes into it, where

the sire is in his career and what he can bring to the table," he

acknowledges. "We like to use higher-end sires to help the

younger mares, but also, like everybody else, try to identify the

up-and-coming stallions. We bred to Quality Road when he was

still $35,000, and Corniche himself was bred off a $70,000 stud

fee, and that has obviously skyrocketed since."

That didn't stop the Lane's End sire being favored as the 2019

mate for Steelin' (Orientate), the dam of Shanghai Bobby.

Following the tragic loss of the mare to colic this year, their

daughter was deemed far too precious to keep her engagement

at the September Sale.

"It was very hard for us all, losing Steelin'," Aidan O'Meara

admits. "She was a sweetheart to be around, all class, and

basically the foundation mare for the farm. But she's left a huge

legacy for us through her daughters and thankfully Miz Kella, her

first to have runners, is already a stakes producer."

Of course, the loss or pensioning of mares in the initial

Stonehaven cycle does create scope to upgrade a broodmare

band that will be confined, in quantity, to a couple of dozen.

"With a small batch of mares, they've been very good at

improving their producing record," says Jeff Reddoch,

applauding his team. "And that improves what you get from the

offspring as well. We have nearly 20% stakes horses to runners

in our racehorse program." Cont. p7

Not every graduate will hit the bull's-eye, naturally, and the

Stonehaven team goes to exemplary lengths to monitor those

that do miss; and to secure their future care, whether on their

own farm or via retraining.

"We really want to see the

horses taken care of," Chiquita

reddoch insists. "So I always say

a prayer when they're on the bid

block, 'Please go to someone

who'll take good care of them.'

Because at the end of the day--

at the end of anyone's lives--it's

what we did on earth that's

important. And these are

animals, they do have feelings,

and they can't fend for

themselves."

By the same token, Leah

O'Meara is a director at TCA;

and urging friends and

associates to move the

Stonehaven team up the Hagyard "Race To Give" chart. As she

says: "We have to thank these horses, because they give us

everything we have."

So there's no mistaking this firm's grasp of the mutual

dependence of our industry, from their repeated appreciations

for their staff to their conviction that if you do the right thing by

the horse, everything else falls

into place.

Yet this kind of immersion was

never remotely in mind for the

Reddochs, during their days

running an oilfield service

business. But luckily their

horse-mad daughter chose

Midway University, Jeff and

Chiquita Reddoch started visiting

from Louisiana, and the

Bluegrass enchantment

gradually did its work.

"We bought a farm and started

learning from the bottom up,"

says Chiquita Reddoch. "I'm a

registered nurse, my husband's

an engineer, we really didn't

know much about it. But it just kind of snowballed. We didn't

plan anything.@ Cont. p8

Stonehaven cont.

Chiquita Reddoch continued, AWe worked hard, the way we

always have in all our businesses, and put our best foot forward.

And now we're just very thankful to have Leah and Aidan and

Colby and the boys on the farm, because they're doing a great

job and we're so proud and happy to be involved."

Leah O'Meara can't quite believe how things have unfolded.

She has seen so many ventures capsize in this most precarious

of industries, and yet now they can dare to sense the possibility

of a tangible legacy in the breed. Certainly the left-field pedigree

of Wasted Tears has been vindicated afresh, as in her racing

days; and Corniche looks eligible to extend her family's influence

into future generations.

"I've always said it was about little growth, little growth," Leah

O'Meara says. "And just hoping to keep some progressive

momentum. So it almost feels harder to tell my parents. 'Okay,

we'll try to do all this again!' They've been part of this business

since 2005. They've put a lot into it. So I'm just really thankful

they've stuck around, and we've had an opportunity to give

them a little payback."

Jeff Reddoch gives a laugh. "Truth is," he says, "we don't know

how to quit!" But then, more seriously, he stresses the sheer

breadth of the team effort, from farriers to feed suppliers to the

people who buy their horses. Those, increasingly, can sign their

dockets with a firmer hand. But the Reddochs raised Leah

O'Meara to that vital compromise between accepting the

unknowable workings of destiny, on the one hand, and doing

everything within your own compass, on the other.

"We know how tough this business can be," Leah O'Meara

says. "And for these things to happen in such a short time, we

know it's pie-in-the-sky. We do just feel incredibly thankful and

blessed. We're firm believers that things happen for a reason.

All we can do is try to show up every day, do our job, do our

part. And just pray that the rest happens. All this is very

fulfilling, but we won't be patting ourselves on the back. We just

want to be consistent, to keep showing up."

Zulueta cont. from p1

Although not considered a "headline" trainer like fellowdefendants Jorge Navarro (who has admitted to doping horsesand faces five years in prison when he is sentenced inDecember) or Jason Servis (who maintains he is not guilty andhas a trial date approaching in 2022), Zulueta's name surfacedfrequently in wire-tapped conversations secretly recorded byfederal investigators before they charged him with one count ofdrug adulteration and another for conspiracy to defraud usingmisbranded drugs. According to a trove of phone conversation transcripts releasedas evidence by the government in September court documents,on Apr. 3, 2019, Zulueta and Navarro allegedly discussed thetestability of a drug administered to the elite-level sprinter X YJet (Kantharos), who was trained (and admittedly doped) byNavarro. X Y Jet died suddenly eight months after that call while stillunder Navarro's care. The circumstances of the horse's deathhave never been fully explained.

In another conversation between Navarro and Zulueta from

around the same time frame, Navarro and Zulueta allegedly

discussed a performance-enhancing "drench" that Navarro

described as "a milkshake thatYwon't show up" that is to be

administered "the day of the race."

At one point, Navarro allegedly boasted, "Marcos I drenched

two today and [the creator of the substance] says you can take

their blood and nothing will come out," unlike other drenches

where "they catch you."

During another wire-tapped call, Zulueta allegedly cautions

Navarro about the dangers of winning too often with doped

horses.

"Yeah, you should be happy-happy-happy that you are not

winning all of them," Zulueta allegedly said, according to the

transcript. "Otherwise, you will be arrested."

Zulueta's words ended up being prophetic: On March 9, 2020,

both trainers, plus 26 others, were taken into federal custody in

a coordinated series of arrests.

COX PAIR HEADS ALCIBIADES DOZEN

A duo of fillies from the Brad Cox barn coming off dominant

maiden victories will attract plenty of attention from bettors in

an evenly-matched field of 12 in Friday's opening-day GI Darley

Alcibiades S. at Keeneland. The 1 1/16-mile test offers to the

winner a fees-paid birth to the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies.

Breaking from the rail is Albaugh Family Stables' narrow

morning-line favorite Juju's Map (Liam's Map). Hammered down

to 7-10 debuting for Cox July 25 at Ellis, the $300,000 Keeneland

September graduate made a menacing run to the lead before

flattening out late and settling for second. Odds-on again

stretching out to a mile there Sept. 3, the bay popped out to the

front and never had an anxious moment in the lane, cruising to a

5 3/4-length score under minimal urging from Florent Geroux.

Alcibiades cont.

Geroux opted to stay aboard Juju's Map instead of keeping the

call on the other half of the Cox tandem, Godolphin's Matareya

(Pioneerof the Nile). Backed to 9-5 as part of an entry debuting

over 6 1/2 furlongs Aug. 20 at Ellis, the homebred made the lead

under her own power, shook off several early challengers and

discarded her stablemate in early stretch en route to a geared-

down 4 1/2-length graduation.

A pair of fillies drawn wide appear to present the biggest

obstacles to Cox, who won the Alcibiades in 2019 with eventual

champion British Idiom (Flashback). In the 10-hole is Milam

Farm's Penny Saver (Super Saver), who owns the top Beyer

figure and Thoro-Graph number in the field for a devastating

maiden romp last out. Runner-up as the favorite on debut going

five furlongs June 18 at Churchill, the $65,000 Fasig-Tipton

October buy was fourth after a slow start stretching out on the

Saratoga turf Aug. 8. Turning a corner in the mornings to the

tune of an unheard-of five-furlong bullet on the Saratoga

training track in :58 4/5 (1/10) Sept. 4, the dark bay backed her

works up with a 9 1/2-length tour de force over this trip Sept. 24

in Louisville, earning an 85 Beyer and 6 1/2 Thoro-Graph

number.

One stall to her outside is Diamond Wow (Lookin At Lucky),

who ships north for Patrick Biancone following a pair of victories

to start her career. Unveiled over five furlongs on the

Gulfstream turf, the chestnut made the pace and edged clear in

the lane to a three-length success. Switched to dirt in the seven-

furlong off-turf Our Dear Peg S. there Sept. 18, she showed

rating ability, sitting off the pacesetter and taking over nearing

the stretch en route to a 1 3/4-length triumph. Biancone

reached out to Mike Smith to take over the reins from Romero

Maragh for this engagement.

Two other stakes winners rate outside chances in Jim

McIngvale's Runup (Runhappy), a three-length upsetter of the

Sorority S. at 14-1 Sept. 6 at Monmouth, and Miss Interpret

(Street Sense), who captured the washed-off P.G. Johnson S. for

Todd Pletcher Sept. 2 at Saratoga.

ALOHA WEST STEPS BACK INTO STAKES

WATERS IN PHOENIX

Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners' Aloha West (Hard Spun), a

troubled fourth in his only previous stakes try, will try black-type

competition again after a pair of well-graded Saratoga allowance

victories in Friday's GII Stoll Keenon Ogden Phoenix S. at

Keeneland, a Breeders' Cup Win and You're In qualifier for the

GI Breeders' Cup Sprint.

Graduating despite a slow start and early, wide move in his

belated debut Feb. 7 at Oaklawn, the 4-year-old was again

troubled at the break and ran fifth in an allowance there Mar.

13 before just missing by a nose in a local allowance Apr. 9.

Circling the field en route to an easy five-length victory May 22

at Churchill, the $160,000 Keeneland September grad was

pinched back early in the Kelly's Landing S. before rallying to get

fourth under the Twin Spires June 25. Overcoming a ground-

losing journey to gut out a Saratoga allowance/optional claiming

success Aug. 1, he backed that up with a powerful score to clear

his three-other-than condition with a career-high 102 Beyer last

out at the Spa Sept. 2.

Given a slight nod on the morning line is Special Reserve

(Midshipman), who has blossomed into an ultra-consistent

stakes sprinter since being claimed by Mike Maker. A winner

just three times in his first 15 starts for Randy Morse, the

gelding was haltered for $40,000 out of a 22-1 upset of an

Oaklawn optional claimer Feb. 6 and immediately paid dividends

when annexing a similar spot while not being offered for the tag

A good second at 10-1 after setting the pace in the

GII Commonwealth S. here Apr. 3, the bay scored back-to-back

stakes successes in the GIII Maryland Sprint S. May 15 at Pimlico

and Iowa Sprint S. July 3 at Prairie Meadows before proving his

top-level bona fides when runner-up in the GI Alfred G.

Vanderbilt H. July 31 at Saratoga.

The top Beyer and Thoro-Graph figure in the race belongs to

Sir Alfred James (Munnings), who breaks from the widest seven-

post. Third in the Aristides S. at Churchill May 29, the bay ran

second in the Good Lord S. July 17 at Ellis before being dangled

for a $62,500 tag by Al Stall in a Louisville optional claimer

Sept. 24. Norman and Lola Cash bit, and were certainly glad they

did when Sir Alfred James ran away to a 5 3/4-length victory,

earning a 103 Beyer and negative-2 Thoro-Graph number.

Griffon Farms and Michelle Lovell's versatile Just Might (Justin

Phillip) looks for his fifth consecutive stakes conquest. Off the

board in the GII Shakertown S. and GII Twin Spires Turf Sprint S.

on turf this spring, the chestnut annexed the Mighty Beau S. on

the Churchill lawn and Da Hoss S. over Colonial turf before

switching to dirt and picking up tallies in the Chesapeake S. at

Colonial and Louisville Thoroughbred Society S. back at Churchill

Sept. 18.

'WHAT WE'VE GOT HERE IS FAILURE TO

COMMUNICATE'by Jude R. Florio, GrDipELR

Farrier Tales continues to pull back the curtain on all things

horse, horseshoeing, farrier, and related science, attempting to

provide useful information and insight for horse professionals

and enthusiasts.

Have you ever wondered why your farrier often seems so

grumpy? The headline, a quote from the classic movie Cool

Hand Luke, basically sums it up.

Over the course of my career, I have cultivated innumerable

friendships with a number of colleagues from various

backgrounds and nationalities. Despite our broad range of

disciplines and skill sets, many of our shared concerns and

frustrations appear consistent.

Of course, a farrier's demeanor can likely be attributable to

the demanding nature and labor intensiveness of the trade,

however, most farriers, myself included, actually enjoy the craft,

accepting the inherent risks while enduring the physical stress. I

suspect like me, many farriers--like most industry professionals--

have been bit by the horse bug early on. Farriers revel in the

success of the client's horses, knowing the important role

played, and by extension, no farrier enjoys failure, paining most

terribly upon news that a horse may be Aoff@ as a result of

something connected to a service performed.

Truth be told, my perceived grumpiness predates my years as

a farrier. It has always been my Aschtick,@ and many clients find

it very entertaining. However, there are a number of things that

can occur which may put your farrier's ABad Mood Jude@ into

overdrive.

I have highlighted the most likely (and frequent) scenarios,

excluding physical health issues and/or matters of a personal

nature (family, children) that may affect one's demeanor and

overall performance.

You Owe the Farrier Money Non-payment for services rendered is an obvious one, but is all

too common and, unfortunately, something farriers experience.

A universally shared disappointment amongst farriers, non-

payment underscores the apparent disconnect within the horse

industry. Trainers, owners and farriers should establish terms of

payment in advance of any service rendered and, as with

anything, communication is key. Guaranteeing and maintaining

verbal commitments (on both sides) is paramount, as well as

openly discussing potential payment issue(s) in advance of

future visits. I suspect any good farrier who conducts themselves

professionally, shows up on time and performs excellent work

will be much happier when leaving at the day's close with check

in hand. Cont. p12

Behavioral Issues Which Make it Difficult to Shoe All farriers are expected to understand and accept the

inherent risks that may come as a result of handling and shoeing

horses. A horse's behavior is a key component to a farrier's

ability to properly and safely carry out their job. Arguably,

shoeing is likely the most invasive thing routinely performed on

horses where an error can be career-ending or worse. The

saying Ano hoof, no horse@ underscores why owners and trainers

with expectations of a good job should not only include steps to

ensure the horse's appropriate behavior for shoeing, but also

include a concern for your farrier's well-being. Considerate and

mindful owners who properly manage horses with behavioral

issues will likely be rewarded with reductions in farrier

Acrankiness@ and gain greater appreciation for the assistance

provided.

Training Your Horse for the Farrier It is important to always disclose any and all pre-existing

known issues to your farrier beforehand, since this can prove

vital to your horse's and farrier's safety. I have personally

experienced countless occasions where critical information and

shoeing-related poor behavior have gone undisclosed. Needless

to say, these types of instances do not bring smiles to any

farrier's face.

Most farriers are willing to work with a difficult horse,

including offering up some advice and recommendations

attempting to address the issue(s). If you are a valued customer,

most farriers will happily attempt to work through solvable

problems. Excluding a rogue, where no amount of training will

work, and others with old injuries, unbreakable quirks, or

traumatic events which result in a protective response, many

horses will come around within two or three shoeings with some

work. I have the good fortune to work on a lot of nice horses

who stand like statues, so I know it is possible.

Also, having had a lot of past experience working with young

horses (foals, weanlings, yearlings, etc.), the stall is a great tool

that should be used to address farrier behavioral issues and to

attempt to work through them. The stall limits space, including

distractions and use of the wall and/or corners requires the

horse to focus on handler instructions.

Proper training for the farrier is usually a two-person job:

handlers/holders should always be active and not passive.

Nothing makes me crabbier than a handler who is texting away,

watching a video, or sitting down, while I'm getting my teeth

knocked in at the other end of Buttercup. I appreciate that

handling horses for the farrier is usually boring and uneventful,

however, it is an essential job for everyone's safety which

includes the horse and it is greatly appreciated.

Discuss a Farrier's List in Advance Most farriers tend to have a strategy in mind as it relates to

tackling a group or list of horses. I am somewhat robotic in my

practice and depending on the particular horse and what is

required, I am like clockwork. Additionally, I know how much

fuel I have in my tank and I suspect other farriers are similar.

Discussing in advance a group of horses due and seeking your

farrier's input on how they may want to address a group will go

a long way in irritable farrier alleviation.

My preference has always been to do difficult horses last,

recognizing extra time and energy may be required. Doing a

difficult horse first may deplete energy required for the rest of

the list, potentially short-changing work quality. Sensitive horses

recognize and react to frustration; a farrier that is slowed down

or jerked around at the start unfortunately sets the wrong tone

for the rest of the day.

Most farriers recognize that there are multiple factors which

may go into devising a shoeing list, however, seeking their input

would be refreshing.

Lord Nelson | Spendthrift Farm

Consider Sedation When Necessary and Possible Many years ago, I had a client with a 17.3-hand, mixed-breed

mare. The mare was occasionally very uncooperative for shoeing

and eventually dangerous. I can not say if it was behavioral,

pain-related or, most likely, a combination of both. She was

certainly aware of her size and strength, using it to her

advantage. Handling and shoeing had become a pointless

spectacle, at times dangerous for all parties involved. I had

strongly recommended that the owner consider sedation for

shoeing. To my surprise and dismay, the owner said, AI'd put the

horse down before I would sedate for shoeing!@ Since these

types of sentiments get farriers, horses, and people injured or

worse, I knew it was my time to move on.

To underscore the point, I believe sedation, when necessary

and used appropriately, is a very useful tool and not unlike other

training aids. Sedation/tranquilizers exist in many forms and

their use Atakes the edge off.@ This includes the new types of

oral gel tranquilizer, which I have occasionally used (when

necessary) with great success. The oral gel takes slightly longer

to take effect but as with most types of sedation, the horse has

an awareness and a better experience, learning acceptance and

coping with the process. In many cases sedation can be reduced

and in some instances discontinued.

Common Sense Courtesies After having considered all of the aforementioned issues, a

few other additional factors bear taking note. It is important to

provide a somewhat clean, level, well-lit (natural light being the

optimum), quiet area devoid of constant traffic (pedestrian,

horse or otherwise). When possible, schedule farrier visits when

the facility tends to be quiet (for example: landscapers,

construction, heavy equipment, and machinery operating near

or around the stabling area tend to unsettle and distract horses).

The bottom line is that quality work comes from

communication, cooperation, and safety which focuses both on

human and horse alike.

All grumbles aside, most farriers are reasonable, hard-working

individuals singularly motivated to provide the best service

possible, keeping horses comfortable, sound, and happy.

Reasonable attempts at making a farrier's life Aeasier@ will keep

them smiling.

LORD NELSON EUTHANIZED

Spendthrift Farm=s MGISW Lord Nelson (Pulpit--African Jade

by Seeking the Gold) was euthanized Thursday after a long

battle with laminitis. He was 9-years-old.

AUpon consulting with a veterinarian team consisting of Dr.

Scott Morrisson, Dr. Jim Morehead, and Dr. Caleb Harms and

our stallion manager Wayne Howard, it was determined that the

only humane course of action we had was to euthanize Lord

Nelson following his latest difficult battle with laminitis,@ said

Ned Toffey, Spendthrift's general manager. AIt=s pretty well

chronicled his long fight with the disease. After several

encouraging years, it unfortunately caught up with him and we

couldn=t allow him to suffer after we had run out of medical

options.@

He continued, AIt is a very sad day at Spendthrift. Lord Nelson

was an unbelievably courageous horse and I think he=ll always

be remembered by the entire team at Spendthrift and anyone

who ever got to be around him. Just a very special animal and

we will miss him.@

Lord Nelson won seven of his 13 starts for trainer Bob Baffert

and Spendthrift, earning $958,271. The flashy chestnut closed

his career with a trio of Grade I victories in the Triple Bend S.,

Bing Crosby S. and Santa Anita Sprint Championship S. in 2016.

He was forced to miss that year's Breeders' Cup and the 2017

breeding season with a leg infection became laminitis. Lord

Nelson's oldest foals are 2-year-olds and he currently has three

winners.

THIRD CLASS 4 DRUG COMPLAINT ISSUED

AGAINST MILLER THIS YEAR

By Dan Ross

The Peter Miller trained Mr. Dougie Fresh (Ghostzapper)

tested positive for phenylbutazone--a class 4, penalty category C

drug--after the horse worked at the San Luis Rey Downs training

center Sept. 19, according to a California Horse Racing Board

(CHRB) complaint dated Sept. 26.

Miller, who did not request a split sample in this case, is

scheduled to appear before the Santa Anita board of stewards at

an unspecified date. This is Miller=s third overage offense in 365

days.

On April 10, Miller was fined $500 after Hembree (Proud

Citizen) tested positive for Isoflupredone, a 4C penalty regulated

drug, after winning the seventh race at Santa Anita Park Jan. 1.

On Sept. 2, Miller was fined $1,500 and assessed one half

point in accordance with the CHRB=s multiple medication

violations rule as a consequence of Mo Forza (Uncle Mo) testing

positive for a phenylbutazone overage after working at San Luis

Rey Downs June 19. Mo Forza most recently won the GII City of

Hope Mile S. at Santa Anita Oct. 2.

Additionally, the Steve Knapp trained Socal Red (Lookin at

Lucky) tested positive for methocarbamol, a 4C penalty

regulated drug, after winning the 4th race at Del Mar Aug. 19,

according to a CHRB complaint dated Sept. 29.

NEW VOCATIONS LAUNCHES 12TH ANNUAL

BREEDERS' CUP PLEDGEEdited Press Release

New Vocations has launched its 12th annual Breeders' Cup

Pledge, in which connections of Breeders' Cup contenders

pledge a percentage of their Championship earnings to support

the charity's mission to rehabilitate, retrain and rehome retired

racehorses. To date, the pledge has raised over $800,000 to

support the nation's oldest and largest racehorse adoption

program.

"This event has become one of our most important annual

fundraisers," said Anna Ford, New Vocations Thoroughbred

Program Director. "Providing proper aftercare for these amazing

athletes is a must, and we have been very blessed to have so

many owners and trainers come together during these exciting

races to pledge their support for New Vocations efforts."

Despite the challenges brought on by COVID-19, last year's

pledge raised a record-breaking $150,000. Over 50

Championship contenders had owners and/or trainers who

pledged a percentage of their Breeders' Cup earnings, with

Authentic (Classic), Monomoy Girl (Distaff), Order of Australia

(Mile), Whitmore (Sprint), Gamine (Filly and Mare Sprint), Aunt

Pearl (Juvenile Fillies Turf) and Fire At Will (Juvenile Turf)

emerging victorious in their Championship races.

"In 2020, at the end of a challenging year, we were very

grateful for the generous support from our long-time and new

pledgers alike," Ford said. "We're excited to watch the pledge

flourish this year as it has in the past, and we can't wait to

welcome even more pledgers to our family as we raise the

much-needed funds that ultimately help retired Thoroughbreds

transition into new homes, careers and purposes."

MR SPEAKER TO RELOCATE TO TEXAS Grade I winner Mr Speaker (Pulpit--Salute, by Unbridled) has

been purchased by Lori and Mark Collinsworth and will be

relocating to their Forks of the Paluxy Farm in Bluff Dale, Texas

for the 2022 Breeding Season. He will stand for $5,000.

AWe are thrilled to have the opportunity to stand a horse of

Mr Speaker=s caliber in Texas,@ said Mark Collinsworth. AHe was

a very talented racehorse, and he is off to a great start in his

stallion career with a number of stakes horses already to his

credit. With the creation of new Texas-sired stakes races this

year and the purse increases we have seen recently in Texas, we

are thrilled to offer a stallion with his proven credentials to

Texas breeders.@

A Phipps homebred trained by Shug McGaughey, Mr Speaker

victories were topped by a win in the 2014 GI Belmont Derby.

He previously stood at Lane's End Farm and his top progeny

includes GISW Speech.

BELLAVIA TO STAND AT PLEASANT ACRES Bellavia (Honor Code--Glacken=s Gal, by Smoke Glacken) will

stand at Pleasant Acres Stallions in Florida for the 2022 breeding

season for a $2,500 fee.

Raced in partnership by Bella Inizio Farm, Fred Rosen, Madaket

Stables, Wonder Stables and Randy Bradshaw, the 4-year-old

retires with a record of 3-1-1-0 and earnings of $59,7000. The

Jena Antonucci trainee's lone win was in a maiden special at

Belmont in October of 2019.

AAt Pleasant Acres Stallions, we are always searching for the

most impressive sire lines to bring to our Florida breeders,@ said

Joe Barbazon. ABellavia is by champion, dual Grade I-winning

Honor Code and is not only the first Honor Code to stand in

Florida, he is the second Honor Code to date to stand anywhere.

His commanding presence and impressive build is just like his

sire and his grandsire A.P. Indy.@

The versatile New York-based, Indiana-bred Piedi Bianchi

made it four wins from five starts at Indiana Grand, dueling free

career stakes victory. The gray, second in the GI Del Mar

going 5 1/2 furlongs Aug. 21. With career earnings of $823,497,

she is third on the list of all-time leading Indiana-breds. AShe

slipped a little at the start, so I didn=t want to rush her, but she

broke pretty good, so we were able to get near the front early,@

said winning jockey Tyler Gaffalione. AI wasn=t concerned about

the pressure because she was doing it easily and was pretty

comfortable. When I threw to her a little, she gave me

everything she had. She is just a classy horse.@ Adore You had a
