Summer Beach Run

Sept/Oct 2011 | Vol. 37, No. 5, Issue 388

One must always take the good with the bad, the bitter with the sweet and it was my turn. Baldwin High School Cross-Country Coach, Tim Young, took me to task for something I said, or actually, didn’t say, in my piece from the last newsletter titled, Save Cross-Country Permanently. I said that out of the 17 high schools with endangered cross-country programs only four of them, Mandarin, Stanton, Fletcher and Lee, had programs worth saving.

I was remiss. Mr. Young’s program at Baldwin High School should have been on that list. For this gaff, this omission, I apologized to Coach Young and he graciously accepted. He is doing a great job and deserves credit for it. You can read his thoughts and feelings in the Letters To The Editor department.

By now, you all know that the new St. Augustine Marathon is not going to clash with the Run 26.2 With Donna event. The organizers decided to run it in November instead (obviously my story made them back down). Nice to see a compromise could be reached.

Another one of JTC Running’s Summer Beach Runs is now in the history book. The night was hot, the humidity was high and the times were slow. Why should we expect anything else?

Yet the thousand or so finishers of both races and their families and friends all enjoyed a good time. There is a full report, results and photos in this issue.

When it comes to running, Ultra running (that which is beyond the marathon) is something else, so are the people who do it. But they all really love it and there must be a reason. What is it? The answer will be revealed to you if you attend JTCR Board Member and Ultra Runner, Mark Ryan’s, Ultrific Extravaganza: All You Ever Wanted To Know About Ultra Running (But Were Afraid To Ask), on October 20th.

This promises to be one heck of an event. The special guest will be none other than the icon, the legend, Jay Birmingham. I’ve known him for more than 30 years, and I haven’t heard him speak for almost that long, but I can tell you this guy can speak. And when he speaks, you listen. Well, that is, if you’re there. So don’t miss it: 7:00 PM, October 20th at the new 1st Place Sports store in the Town Center Mall.

Oh, the seminar will be preceded by a group fun run (we’ll do about 3 miles, Jay about 53).

Letter from the Editor:Bob Fernee

Seems like if a runner has a sensitive spot in his anatomy it is bound to give him trouble one day, sometimes it can even end his running. The number one trouble spot tends to be the knees. The Jacksonville Orthopedic Institute’s Dr. Steven J. Lancaster will speak on knee injuries and meniscal tears at the 1st Place Sports store in Jacksonville Beach on November 3rd at 7:00 PM.

Speaking about injuries, our resident sports medicine expert, Mike Ryan, gives you the low down on heel pain. Of course a certain football team in this town might also try to claim him, but don’t listen to them.

Politics, jobs, the recession, the plummeting real estate market, the wars, the Arab Spring and trying to keep up with the Kardashians (who are they anyway!?) But the topic that tops them all is (drum roll, please) … Minimalism!

Yes, you just can’t kill it. Wafer thin running shoes are all the rage right now and everyone seems to want to learn more about the subject.

Pedorthist, Gene Ulishney, has been in the business since Moses was just a glint in his father’s eye. Gene also writes a column for the paper, Race Place. He kindly allowed me to reprint his timely article about minimalism in The Starting Line. I think you might like it.

Orthopedic surgeon, Dr. R. Stephen Lucie, also confronted the subject in an enjoyable talk recently. I was there and tried to capture the main points of what he said in a story that also appears in this month’s newsletter.

Even more important than minimalism is our next election of our Board of Directors. Get your nominations in by November 1, please. Send to Doug Tillett or Larry Roberts.

Our old friend Frank Reynolds, aka “Dr. Radical”, has shared two of his inspirational running “songs” with us which are also very humorous, typical Radical. We even have some poetry thanks to Miles MacEachern.

Looking farther down the line we see that in December JTC Running provides us with two very fine events.

Our annual Christmas party takes place on December 10th at the 1st Place Sports store in beautiful San Marco. Free food, free booze and free camaraderie. While you are there you can also take in the delights of San Marco’s ‘Holiday Magic’ celebration and the Festival of Lights 5k and Kids’ 1-Mile Fun Run (the races will cost you money but nothing else will).

Our 35-year old race, The Last Gasp, has never been run on a Monday, but why not? Christmas falls on Sunday this year and everyone will be “off” on Monday, so the 26th of December should be a perfectly good time for it.

The 5k cross-country classic will start at 2:00 PM, as usual, and will feature a splendid post-race, New Year’s party.

Greetings! We made it! Summer is over, days are shorter, and it's not 90 plus degrees out. That seemed to take forever! The Pies Run seems like ancient history! Well, so be it. Weather is cooler, runs are easier, and football is back. Who could ask for more?

And yes, high school cross country has been saved for this school year. Your Club helped the fund raising effort with a $3000 contribution. Numerous individuals joined 1st Place Sports’ significant leadership effort to find the money necessary to enable Duval County high schools to field boys and girls teams this fall. Many of you turned out for the Stadium Challenge 5k on August 13 which pushed the drive over the top and provided funding for other high schools sports as well. All in all, a great community effort of which we can all be proud. Plans are underway for a foundation to serve as a permanent solution for future years.

The running calendar for October and November is full of great races-- at least one each week! October kicks off with the Marine Corps Half Marathon on Oct. 1 starting near the stadium and finishing at Metropolitan Park. The following Saturday the venue shifts to Town Center for the Human Race 5k. If the fancy shops of Town Center aren't your thing the alternative is the Jax Mud Fest at the Equestrian Center on the west side. From what I've read about it, I'd suggest wearing your old running shoes, or none at all!

The choices Oct. 15 are the Fetal Hope 5k at Atlantic Beach or the Run Wild Adventure Run at White Oak

Plantation in Yulee, north of Jacksonville. The next Saturday brings the Komen Race for the Cure at the Jacksonville Fairgrounds. October ends with one of my favorite events, the Evergreen Pumpkin Run at the cemetery on North Main Street on Sunday, Oct. 30.

The first weekend in November we have the DSAJ All Star Beach 5k at Jax Beach Seawalk Pavilion on Saturday and the Striders Hog Jog Sunday afternoon at Van Zant Park in Lake Asbury. Another of my favorite events is Saturday, Nov.12, the Native Sun Mandarin Run-- the best 10k course in Northeast Florida. The following Saturday is McKenzie's Run Nov. 19 at the stadium. November ends with the traditional Thanksgiving half marathon on November 24 sponsored this year by Subaru. Nine days later, you can do another half marathon-- the Amelia Island Runners Reindeer at Fort Clinch State Park on December 3.

All in all, that is a lot of great running this fall in the Jacksonville area, for a number of very worthwhile charities. Lace up and get moving!

JTC Running’s Genuine 5k Cross-Country Race

ELECTIONS FOR NEXT YEAR’S BOARD OF DIRECTORS COMING SOON – MAYBE YOU SHOULD “RUN” FOR THE BOARD

QUALIFICATION: If you were a JTCRunning member as of January 1, 2011, and kept your membership “active” all year, you could be considered to run for the board. All candidates are vetted by the club’s Executive Committee prior to being placed on the ballot.

Ten seats are up for election this cycle and at least two of the seats are vacant at this time. Directors are elected for two-year terms. Your commitment will be to attend monthly board meetings on the first Tuesday evening of the month (only two absences per year permitted), to join at least one of the club’s committees, participate in the club races and other activities, and keep your club membership current throughout your term as a director on the board.

Our directors are not paid but the rewards of participating in steering JTCRunning are manifold and substantial. Being a director makes you an important element of the running club and the community in which we run. To discuss running for the board and to submit your name for consideration for election, please contact one of these Executive Committee members:

Douglas Tillett ([email protected]) 728-3711

Larry Roberts ([email protected]) 703-5451

Deadline to toss your hat into the ring is Monday, October 31. Ballots for the election will be sent out in the next edition of The Starting Line, around the 1st of December, and the results will be counted around Christmas. The new board’s 1st meeting will be Tuesday, January 3, 2012. Please consider running for the board and join us as we run JTCRunning.

JTC RUNNING BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING MINUTESTuesday, August 2, 2011 Location: Mediterrania Restaurant; 3877 Baymeadows Road; Jacksonville, FL

President Larry Roberts called the meeting to order at 7:08 p.m. Directors Richard Fannin and Amanda Napolitano were absent.

Approval of 6/7/11 minutes: The June minutes were approved as submitted following a motion by Lamar Strother. We did not meet in July, thus there were no minutes for July.

Treasurer’s Report: Treasurer Bonnie Brooks distributed copies of the Balance Sheet and the Profit & Loss Detail for June and another for July. She then reviewed our financial transactions and resulting status with the board. She also told us that she would be on vacation starting on August 12 for two weeks.

OLD BUSINESS:

1. Awards Banquet – was on Wednesday, June 15, at 6:30 at Maggiano’s Little Italy. Jane Alred reported that it went well, from our perspective. The only “problem” was that more people attended than we expected resulting in turmoil for the Maggiano’s stuff but they accommodated the additional guests pretty quickly, then it was on with the show.

2. Running Camp Scholarships – Doug Alred said we provided grants for 13 students to running camp for one week. He has received a report from one student but will try to get more from other students to share with our membership.

3. Track Meets at UNF – Vice President Larry Sassa thinks the quality of the field was better than before. He said the meets this year formed a good foundation for growth in future years. The UNF track facility is wonderful – national class – and he thinks that with better advertising, next year’s meets should be even better with more athletes participating. Doug Tillett asked if we should continue to finance the meet for another year – during discussion the board thought the dates could be adjusted and “spreading the word” could be improved. Doug Alred said 1st Place Sports will use their database next year to advertise the meet. No action was taken but the general agreement was that the meets were a worthwhile expenditure and should be continued.

NEW BUSINESS:

1. Richard Fannin requested by email that we not count his absence from the meeting against him because of the circumstances that led to his absence. The board discussed his proposal but determined any absence had to count. It happened that another director also had an absence this evening, and even though her circumstances were also altruistic, the board determined that any absence is counted. We will ask any board member who has three absences for the

JTC Minutes

year what they plan for the future on the board.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

Gate River Run (3/10/12) – Race Director Doug Alred acknowledged that we are in the early stage of the race’s yearly cycle, as we just received the final accounting for the 2011 race last month. At this stage, race management is working on sponsorship for 2012.

Tijuana Flats Summer Beach Run – The race is scheduled for Saturday, August 20, at 6:30 p.m. We scheduled our “packet stuffing party” for Tuesday, Aug 16 at 6 pm in the Race Management Office. Lamar reported that volunteers were all arranged and students would be helping.

RACE COMMITTEE – No report.

JTCRunning RACE TEAM – Director David Moritz reported there has been a problem with chronic injuries and discussed replacement runners, if that becomes necessary. The board also talked about how we think all JTCRunning Racing Team members should wear JTCRunning “colors” whenever they race, but without a doubt at all the races where the team pays their entry fee into the race.

CLASSES & CLINICS – The next JTCRunning Half Marathon Training Class coached by John Metzgar will begin on Tuesday, August 30. At the time of the meeting, we had no clinics on the horizon, but a committee member suggested we host an ultra-marathon symposium, with local ultra runners speaking to the attendees about what their experiences were like.

COMMUNITY & PUBLIC RELATIONS – Committee Chair Larry Sassa spoke earlier in the meeting about the track meets we financed at UNF – no other committee business was brought to the meeting.

FINANCE COMMITTEE – Committee Chair Bonnie Brooks spoke earlier in the meeting for the Treasurer’s Report – there was no other committee business to discuss.

MEMBERSHIP – Membership Coordinator Rex Reed sent a report that we have 860 unit memberships as of this date.

MERCHANDISE – No report.

NEWSLETTER – Committee Chair Bob Fernee said the newsletter was at the printer and we should have it soon. Discussion commenced regarding the possibility of distributing The Starting Line electronically instead of on paper.

WEBSITE – No report.

SOCIAL & BANQUET – We are already thinking ahead to the San Marco social we have enjoyed for the past couple of years.

VISION & PLANNING – The “Save High School Cross Country” effort was successful. JTCR contributed $3,000 to the fund, which raised $62,000, ensuring the Duval County Schools would have girls and boys cross country this year.

RAGNAR RELAY – Director Mark Ryan said one JTCRunning group took advantage of the “club discount” offered by RAGNAR, but it was not our “official” team that Mark has been working to coordinate.

Poem

NEXT MEETING – The next board meeting will be on Tuesday, September 6, at 7 p.m. at Mediterrania Restaurant.

The August meeting was adjourned at 8:06 p.m.

Douglas Tillett, JTCRunning Secretary, has respectfully written and submitted these minutes.

3 races in 24 hoursto prove how fit we are or how insane,

we dare to duel with the cruel sun,and run our buns off at the Tour de Pain.

First race, four miles in burning sand, to gainSome blisters and leg cramps that have begun

To prove how fit we are and how insane.

Up at dawn we struggle on, to maintainOur motivation till the starting gun,

Then run our buns off at the Tour de Pain.

The second one’s a three-mile run. We strainTo hold race pace with feet weight a ton,

And prove how fit we are and how insane.

At last only the final mile remains,And we will all rejoice when that is done

At ninety-nine degrees, but who complains?

Now we drink beer, though we have earned champagne,And a walker or cane, but everyone

Has proved how fit we are and how insaneTo run our buns off at the Tour de Pain.

Letters to the Editor

Every year our club awards some scholarships to deserving high school runners and sends them to a summer running camp. Here is a letter from one of them.

My running experience at Brevard Distance Runners Camp was amazing. I had so much fun. I had to run up the toughest mountains there is, but once I got to the top, I took a deep breath and sigh of relief and was glad to have accomplished the mountain.

For the next day I knew there was another tough run and mountain to face. Besides running, my team and I played basketball against the camp staff, in which we almost won and we also played Dodgeball against other schools. (We had a 13 game streak in a Dodgeball tournament.)

At the beginning of camp, there was an ice cream social in which people got to eat ice cream and got to meet and socialize with people from other schools. At camp, we had team building activities, which were fun, and they also helped in bringing our team closer together.

The food at camp was amazing, not just due to the fact that it was All You Can Eat, the food was really good.

Other times during camp when we were not eating, running or having free time, we had sessions in which the staff talked to us about different areas of running which can help us become a better runner and get the most out of our season. (I really enjoyed those sessions, they helped me realize what I need to do to run in college and meet my goals.

I am so excited for camp next year. (I CAN’T WAIT!!!)

Camp was so much fun and amazing. I really had lots of fun. My team had lots of fun. We all had lots of fun. I cannot thank Jacksonville Track Club enough for being able to send me to camp this summer.

Thanks so much,Sincerely,Torian Brown

I read your article in The Starting Line and totally agree with your solution to this dilemma. I believe it should be up to the school which sports they should fund and see the same thing you do about most of the 17 teams not caring about cross-country at all and wasting the money.

The only thing that bothered me is that you listed 4 selected teams and said that they were the only decent teams with proper positive programs. This upsets me not because our team (or any other team for that matter) was left out, but that there was no room left in your statement for other teams at all. Honestly, most of the other 13 teams probably could care less, but to discredit their programs without really knowing the situations was kind of harsh.

We are not as big as the four teams you mentioned, but to say a blank statement that infers we are not a positive decent program is troubling. I know we are not very well known and we are building a program from very little, but in the past 2 ½ months as we put much effort into saving our sport through various fundraisers, I saw very little efforts from those 4 programs mentioned. That doesn’t mean there was no effort from those teams or that they are not positive programs (I know they are), but let’s not discount other teams just because they are not well known.

Our small, barely heard of team, was the only CC team represented in the Longhorn Fundraiser on July 8th. You mentioned three or four (teams with decent CC programs) and then named four…. That leaves no room for other teams. I am passionate about my team and love coaching cross-country and that’s why I had to email you to at least express my feelings.

I respect you and your work, but have to speak up to let you know that there are at least 5 or more positive cross-country programs.

Tim Young

I want to again thank JTC for supporting Epitome for Excellence.

The AAU District Qualifier was a hug success. I had the opportunity to volunteer on 3 or 4 days and was impressed with the number of state AAU officials who under the leadership of Angela Harris put on a well-organized meet. When you couple this with the fine facility at UNF, Jacksonville should continue to strive for more national caliber track & field meets. The meet had 1,400 participants, ranging in age from 8 to 17, from all the major cities in Florida.

Summer Beach Run 2011Bob Fernee

The Summer Beach Run, hosted by local club JTC Running, was run for the 46th time on August 20th. And no doubt for the 46th time the race drew mixed reviews.

“It was wonderful, I loved it,” said Beaches resident, Steve Bruce. “The ocean was beautiful, the sand was nice and in good shape. The whole thing is a really great event.”

The sand was a bit of a pre-race worry. The current beach renourishment project brought back images from years ago when runners had to deal with a veritable soft sand steeplechase complete with hurdles of cement pipes and rivulets.

No one even mentioned it; the beach rebuilding never showed its ugly head.

The 5-mile race had 947 finishers. Courtney Kuznicki said, “I don’t want to complain,” then started doing so: “I think the course was long. The race should be a 5k instead of 5-miles, at this time of year it is just too hot. The sand was wet and soft and the wind was horrible.”

The strong wind, which blew in a northerly direction, was in the runners’ faces for the first two and a half miles. The order of the day was running in packs and drafting.

“It was a day for tactical racing,” said Shawn Williams who finished third overall. “I was at 12-minutes and 30 seconds at two miles (6:15 pace against the wind) but finished in 30:07 (6:01 pace).”

Local runner, Shannon Miller (26), who finished second among the women in 32:48, also found the going hard and hot.

One would think that a Canadian would perish in the heat and humidity more easily than anyone else, but Rich Tremain showed otherwise. The 40-year old from Guelph, near Toronto, won the race in 29-minutes and 21 seconds.

He said afterwards: “We come here every summer for a visit, sometimes it coincides with this race. I never really plan for it.”

“I was running with Paul McRae all the way down and we were still together after the turn,” Tremain said. “With about a mile and a half to go I picked it up a little to see if I could break away from him.”

He could and did; McRae (38), originally from New Zealand and head of his own training company, Personal Running Solutions, finished second in 30:03.

What Tremain never said was that he is a very accomplished, successful runner (so humble those Canadians). On the first of July this year he ran a new Canadian Master’s Record of 3-minutes, 54.8 seconds in the 1,500 meters. On top of a pile of other accomplishments he finished fourth in the 2009 Summer Beach Run in 27:44.

Russian Lyubov Denisova won the women’s race in 30:30. The diminutive 39-year old ran a smart race by tucking in behind

much larger men. She stuck with the lead pack all the way down the beach then trudged on alone for the final 2.5-miles.

Her time was almost two minutes off the women’s course record but actually quite good given the circumstances. She has had a checkered history in the running world mostly due to drugs. In 2006 she won the Honolulu Marathon in a course record time of 2 hours, 27-minutes and 19 seconds. She was discovered to have an elevated testosterone-to-epitestosterone ratio and her record did not stand. This was the same issue that cost 2006 Tour de France champion, Floyd Landis, his title. The following year Denisova was banned from competition for two years. Her best race was the 2004 New York Marathon when she finished third in 2:25:18.

Gerry Glenn (48) of Jax Beach won the masters division in 30:21 and Sarah Batt (46) of Savannah, Ga. took the women’s masters category in 38:25.

Tremain will go down as the race’s oldest winner and his time will be recorded as the slowest winning time in the race’s illustrious history. But slow times were not uncommon; in fact nearly everyone had one.

Fletcher High School assistant cross country coach, Herb Taskett, said: “I used to think in terms of breaking 30 (minutes) in this race, then when I got older it was 40. Today I couldn’t even do that.” He finished in 42:22.

“I ran five minutes slower than last year,” admitted formidable grand masters runner, Bernie Candy, of St. Augustine. “Last year I ran 33-minutes, this year it was 38.”

No rain fell during the race and nothing dampened the spirits at the popular post-race party hosted by title sponsor, Tijuana Flats. Proceeds were donated to the company’s charity, Just In Queso. Free tacos, tortilla chips, salsa and free beer where all handed out to the many runners and their families in attendance. They did a great and wonderful job and even waded into the waiting, hungry throng with bags of tortilla chips and salsa to keep the patient crowd happy and fed. Not an easy task considering that crowd had just run five miles in torturous heat, humidity and wind.

The custom beach towels given away as awards came in handy as so many were still perspiring from all the effort. Towels were mistakenly handed out to the top-three in each age group but should have been given to the top-five. Check the SBR results in this issue to see if you are owed an award.

In July a meeting of the JTCR Race Committee took place concerning the club’s annual track meet series. Also in attendance was the University of North Florida’s Assistant Track Coach, David Frank. For 32 years the series had been organized and executed by Board Member, Lamar Strother. When Strother retired from the meets last year the club turned them over to UNF. Under an agreement with the university, JTCR would sponsor the 2011 4-meet series for $10,000. The meets would be held at UNF’s national-class track facility and UNF would promote and organize the meets as well as do the leg work on race days. The four meets are over now for this year. They all went without a hitch except perhaps the one that was nearly terminated due to a ferocious storm. They were all very professionally timed and executed. Those in attendance were ecstatic about the entire facility, especially the Mondo track. In particular, the pole vault was a real crowd pleaser. Public track meets are few and far between these days and a public meet with a pole vault competition is a real rarity. The audience was enthralled and the vaulters appreciative. It was hoped that moving the series to UNF would increase the attendance but unfortunately it didn’t. It was also hoped that since club members got to run for free (if they entered online, in advance) that we would see an increase in new memberships. We did, but not by much. The meeting of the Race Committee tried to address these shortcomings, especially the attendance issue. Fact is, the meets this summer did no better than “Lamar’s Meets” in terms of turn out. One of the big-gest no-shows was the Police Athletic League with all its kids. For the first time, each kid had to pay a $10 entry fee, did that drive them away? We don’t know, but the PAL will be contacted to find out why. Should the entry fee be dropped for kids under the age of say, fourteen? In truth, the meets now belong to UNF and they can do what they like. UNF Coach Mark VanAlstyne believes that $10 is a fair price for what is being offered, and he is right. For

ten bucks, they got a lot and at the final meet con-testants got awards and t-shirts. The thing is, does anyone care about track any-more? Obviously, the main influx of runners these days is middle-aged LSD (long slow distance) types. They want to complete marathons and half-marathons, not 1,500 meters on the track. So how do the track meets go about increasing their atten-dance? This is the dilemma for JTCR and UNF. Our club is absolutely committed to track. If we weren’t we wouldn’t be putting so much money and effort into it. We think we can pull people from other clubs throughout Florida and Georgia, young and old. We can advertise the meets in running stores, track club newsletters, magazines and web sites. Yet it is not all up to us. We are paying $10,000 for UNF to organize, execute and promote the four meets. UNF needs to have some foresight. and to spend some of that money on advertising the meets to make them an unqualified success. If they don’t, the gravy train will stop running. Let’s see; the JTCR supports the meets for 12 years and UNF track gets $120,000. That’s a nice chunk of change. Or UNF lets the baton drop and doesn’t bother to increase the attendance significantly and after two years JTCR pulls out and UNF banks only $20,000. Big difference. We hope that UNF will also see the difference and will strive to make the meets all that they can be. That is what JTC Running wants: High quality meets that please the contestants and spectators, and an outreach program that pulls in the old track-sters and the youngsters too, as well as a long-term mutually beneficial association with UNF Track. Only one thing is certain, the year 2012 will be cru-cial for public track in Jacksonville.

As I talk to running stores around the country, I ask the question, “What is a minimal shoe?” For the most part, the answer is “a shoe with a lower heel-to-forefoot height ratio”, and maybe adding, “a thin and more flexible midsole.” And they’re right, according to what most shoe manufacturers have been touting and are currently producing.

Can essentially one shoe be good for every runner when we’ve been telling everyone that there have always been runners needing one of three basic shoe types – neutral, stability or motion control? Sure, a lower heel does more naturally and seem-ingly positively change the human gait. But does it suffice to allow a runner who severely overpronates to wear the same shoe that an oversupinator is wearing? Common biomechanical sense tells me, no. How about a lightweight runner vs. a heavy-weight runner? Far too many individualities exist to think that one shoe will be good for all.

Are minimal shoes safer? I agree that they can, with a lower heel, put the runner in a more biome-chanically advantageous position as compared to most running shoes produced today, but at what cost? Lower to the ground minimal shoes seem to be a quick-fix for manufacturers who haven’t been able to keep up with those in making the most mechanically efficient and injury preventive shoes currently on the market. Mechanically they are better, but at a cost that is only beginning to arise – foot structure breakdown. Thinner is not better, less is not more when shoes begin to compromise impact protection from modern man’s concrete and asphalt world. Our fat pads underfoot have evolved over the last 50,000 years to accommodate natu-ral, three-dimensional surfaces. Our feet are called “mobile adapters” and are designed to easily tra-verse the earth’s varying and undulating surfaces, continually adapting and helping eliminate over-use to any particular foot or body structure. The earth is also forgiving and offers us natural shock absorp-tion. On the other hand, our newly introduced hard, two-dimensional surfaces throw a wrench into our mobility equation. This surface is so consistent that the foot can no longer be infinitely mobile. It is rel-egated to basically one motion determined by both the flat hard surface and the shoe that it is enclosed within. Today, we still need shock protection similar to what the earth has always offered us for the 50,000 years that modern man has been around.

And, this shock protection should ultimately be designed to least affect natural, barefoot gait.

Anytime we put any type of foot covering on the foot, we alter biomechanics. The challenge for shoe manufacturers has always been to develop shoes which closely emulate the function of barefoot mobility, but in a protective package. Some have taken this challenge much more seriously than others by investing in state-of-the-art biomechanical labs and working with some of the best biomechanical experts and university labs in the world. Simply explained, the idea is to first study the entire body in motion, barefoot, on forgiving, natural surfaces. Then once this control is established, try to get as close as possible to this natural body position and function when the pro-tective factor of shoes are added. This process is painstakingly intense as even minute adjustments to the shoes can produce dramatic positive or negative results. The best manufacturers can make footwear adjust-ments on the spot and see results within hours. Others produce footwear with “ideas” and wait to see how runners react to them – kind of a “try and see” approach. Such shoes are usually the ones that seem to change most from year to year. These are the reasons all running shoes are not created equal - and the reason why most say that you have to “break your shoes in”. It’s really just the oppo-site that is happening – most shoes are breaking you in. You are the one who must get used to their often compromised mechanics. A good, properly fitted and mechanically efficient running shoe does not need to be “broken in”. I have fit untold num-bers of runners the day before a big race or mara-thon and have afterwards gotten innumerable calls and emails with statements such as, “pr, great race, no pain, and I’m not going to quit running now!”

Where am I going with this? Simply, there are extremely good “core” running shoes out there that are mechanically efficient enough and protective enough to help you run just about as long and far as you want. They are the safest shoes to use for the majority of your running. Some even come very close to functioning similarly to a minimal shoe but with all of the protection factors that a conventional running shoe offers.

Although I don’t see minimal shoes replacing conventional running shoes for the vast majority of runners, I do see them as a very relevant addi-tion to the runner’s arsenal. Minimal shoes on the market today are not much more than racing flats. Other than having a lower heel and thinner midsole, dimensionally and structurally speaking, there’s not much more designed into these products that scream “barefoot”. In any event, if you so choose to try a minimal running shoe, begin very slowly, maybe running a couple hundred yards or so and gradually working up to your shortest run of the week. Try them during your track workout. Think of them as your cross-training running shoe. Take special care to notice any Achilles tendon or calf pain or tightness as the lowered heel of a minimal shoe puts more stretch on these tissues. If ex-periencing any pain, especially in the back of the leg, heel and arch area, or general foot soreness, don’t try to run through it. Podiatrists and Physical Therapists have been experiencing a mini-surge in business recently, and are relating it to minimal and “toe shoes”. If ignoring the need for shock

absorption, my guess is that you’ll be at least buy-ing larger shoes in the future due to structure and tissue breakdown in the foot. Case in point, I was helping a female runner who came to buy a pair of “regular” running shoes after two and a half months of exclusively running in her “toe shoes”, stating that her feet were “just sore”. I asked what size she was wearing and she said, “7½”. I looked at her foot and it looked more like a 9 or 9½. Well, much to her great dismay, she ended up with a size 10 Wide! I believe structure and tissue stress due to lack of shock absorption was the main culprit.

In the near future, manufacturers who are not just taking advantage of this new and exciting category will be addressing the entire shoe, heel-to-toe and bottom-to-top. In the best of them, proper biome-chanics will be maximized without compromising much of our needed and protective shock absorp-tion from the modern world’s unforgiving surfacing. The running companies who endure will probably be the same ones who are presently leading the industry in innovative “core” running product.

Orthopedic Surgeon Steven Lucie Talks Minimalism Bob Fernee

On September 1st, Dr. R. Steven Lucie, an ortho-pedic surgeon from the Jacksonville Orthopedic Institute, treated runners to a spectacular talk on minimalism and barefoot running. The 1st Place Sports store on Baymeadows Road was appropri-ately converted into a mini auditorium for a couple of hours as Lucie took on the controversial subject that is still a hot topic amongst runners. Lucie’s presentation was impressive, complete with an informative yet humorous slide show. You could tell that he put an awful lot of work into it. And he did his homework. He admitted that while he was aware of the barefoot/minimalism movement he knew very little about it until he began compiling the materials for his presentation.

Now he does and he let fly on the subject.“When I was asked to do this I said, ‘why don’t you let me talk on something like meniscus tears, something I like and can make some money on’, because I think this barefoot running is crazy,” Lu-cie began. He said that he read Christopher McDougall’s book, Born To Run, which has become the barefoot run-ner’s Bible. Lucie said: “Once you’ve read it you can go out and run 50 miles in homemade tire sandals.” (If you did you would probably be in his office the next day. Maybe he will make some money from this after all.) Echoing one point from the book, Lucie admitted, “We live in a shoed society and we have taught our feet to be lazy.”

The Starting Line | P 19

“These minimalist shoes, and there are a variety of them around these days, seem to be best for young people, thin people and people with good biomechanics,” Lucie said. “It’s hard to know if you have good biomechanics. If you are bow-legged or knock-kneed, some of these things are recipes for disaster. You certainly need to have good feet.”

“The shoe industry has spent the last 50 years try-ing to let people run who were maybe not meant to run,” he said. “Which is part of the reason why we have so many people today able to run marathons.”

“If you run a lot of your miles on the beach, this is a good place to start and look into it if you are inter-ested,” he advised. “I don’t think the grate on the Main Street Bridge is too good for it.”

He reminded the audience how coaches often have their runners do a little barefoot running on a grassy field to strengthen their feet and he was also of the opinion that this was a good idea. He said that for natural running surfaces the 5-Finger type minimal-istic shoes would be ideal, but not for street and concrete.

“One of the things all this barefoot running is doing is, you’re running lightly, there is no clomping. There is no big heel strike; you’re landing lightly on the balls of your feet. It hurts a lot if you don’t,” he said. Lucie recommended starting out slowly and using the Newton brand of shoes first. Newtons are designed to make a runner land on his forefoot rather than heel (but they still have some padding and protectiveness).

“We think that these minimalist shoes may be more of a tool rather than an end-all,” he said. “They could be good to help you run more efficiently.”

Lucie lauded the Galloway Method for helping so many runners and for reducing injuries, then men-tioned the email that Jeff Galloway sent a couple of months ago concerning minimalism and barefoot running.

Galloway wrote: “I have seen this trend come and go five times within my 52 years of running. The fad and cycle ends when people who get hurt tell their friends about their experience.”

Galloway concluded with a caution: “They have a place, if your feet can handle it.”

One might think that a man who makes a living repairing broken bones would be loving this crack-a-metatarsal minimalism movement but it just isn’t so. One got the feeling Lucie was dead set against it and wanted to scream: “Don’t take the chance, don’t do it!”

Lucie’s witty, informative talk showed why he is the Lady Gaga of Orthopods (well, without the bizarre costumes, wild hair, crazy makeup and fancy foot-work). This was a performance well worth repeating and I hope that one day soon he will bring it back for an encore.

Ultra Update

I’d like to start off my first Ultra Update column by defining what an ultra is; an ultra is quite simply any

race longer than a marathon. Ultra distances run any-

where from 50k to 300 miles and beyond. Most ultra races fea-ture individual and relay divisions.

I thought it made sense to start off my column with a bang and tell you about the “mother’ of all ultras; the recently completed

Badwater Ultramarathon, which takes place in Death Valley, California in the middle of July every year. If you are not familiar with it go to their web-site at Badwater.com and get a feel for this insane event. Known as the “toughest footrace in the world” this 135 mile race is for individual runners only, no relay teams. It draws an international field of the best ultra runners every year.

I know what you’re saying, “who would want to run this event?” It is tough to even get accepted into the race. This year 1300 people applied and only 94 were accepted. You can’t just decide to enter. Every person who applies has to have completed at least three 100 mile races, one in the past 12 months and is encouraged to have at least 5 years Ultra experience. The accepted runners are then classified by probable finish time and put into three starting groups; at 6am, 8am and 10am. The 10am starting group consists of the very best ultra runners in the world. The winner of this event has always come from this starting group.

Each runner has to be self supported and must bring their own crew to leapfrog them along the course to provide water, food and supplies. This year I had the pleasure to crew for my friend Chris Roman, who is a Jacksonville resident and fine ultra runner. Chris was in the 10am starting group. It was an unbelievable experience for both the crew and Chris as he finished the race in 16th place overall out of 81 finishers.

Let me put the distance of this race in perspective for you, 135 miles is the distance from Jacksonville to Disney World in Orlando. The distance is only part of the story at Badwater. The race starts at Badwater Basin, which is the lowest point in the contiguous United States at 282 feet below sea level. The race ends 8360 feet above sea level half way up Mt. Whitney, but that isn’t all. There are several elevation increases and decreases along the way which translates to over 13,000 feet of cumulative ascent and 4700 feet of cumulative de-scent. Are you tired yet?

Now on to the heat; the temperature this year at the 10am start time was 108 degrees. By the first check point at Furnace Creek, the 17 mile mark, the temperature was 112 degrees. The temperature topped out that day at 114 degrees, which was cooler than normal. The normal high temperature in July is 122 degrees, so we caught a break. By the time we hit the top of Towns Pass at 5000 feet above sea level and around midnight the tempera-ture had dropped to 56 degrees. The high tem-perature the second day on the other side of the mountain range was only 87 degrees and actually felt somewhat cool.

To give you an idea of the enormity of this project consider this; our crew and runner went through 400 pounds of ice during the 32 hours and 27 min-utes it took Chris to complete the race. Yes, that was 40 ten pound bags of ice. We went through 24 gallons of water as well.

Once the race starts the clock does not stop for a runner until that runner crosses the finish line. Some runners stop along the way to take a nap and some stop to take a swim at the 42 mile check point in Stovepipe Wells, one of the small towns along the way. Our runner Chris only stopped once for about 15 minutes in Stovepipe Wells as his wife tended to a couple of blisters on his foot. Then it was off again and he did not stop until he crossed the finish line.

Runner and crew will never forget Badwater 2011; we were all positively affected by the experience.

Runner’s Guide to Beating Heel PainMike Ryan

Any runner who has ever battled heel pain will tell you that severe arch pain may have been their toughest competitor. The exact source of that stabbing pain under the foot can vary. Heel pain can be the result of a traumatic episode such as forcefully loading the heel on a hard surface or an overuse injury, such as plantar fasciitis. I was a 2-time All-State middle distance runner my junior and senior years in high school running in sprint-er spikes with heel cups. I can hear you now: “Not a smart move, Ryan!” and you’re right. They were my favorite racing shoes but an obvious reason why I had constant heel pain and shin splints. The calcaneus bone, or heel bone, has a thick layer of fat and protective fascia on its underside to provide padding with the ground. Excessive forces or repetitive pounding of the heel as with running can cause the fat pad to shift or become inflamed. When the protective layer under the heel bone decreases in ef-ficiency, heel pain and burning feet can result.

Common Heel Pain Diagnoses for Runners:• Heel Contusion – Known as a bruising of the heel bone. • Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome – This happens when the nerves encroach the back of the foot and arch. • Plantar Fasciitis – A common source of arch pain, this inflammatory process involves the plantar fascia, which enters into the back of the arch. • Heel Spur – This occurs when excessive bone forms under the calcaneus (heel).• Calcaneal Stress Fracture – This is a preliminary or significant fracture of the calcaneus bone.• Calcaneal Bursitis – Is inflammation of the sack of fluid which sits under the heel.

Signs & Symptoms • An increased warmth and swelling of the underside of the heel bone and arch.• Point tenderness anywhere along the surface of the heel bone.• Arch pain originating on the heel and possibly extending into the underside of the foot towards the toes.• Posterior heel pain with weight bearing on the foot, which worsens with running.

Professional Treatment for Heel Pain• Icing the entire heel bone with an ice bag, ice massage or, ideally, with an ice bucket immediately after running or a prolonged period of time when you are standing.• Running on softer surfaces like grass or semi-firm sand whenever possible.• Cross training with sports such as swimming, biking and elliptical trainer more to rest the undersurface of the foot more to minimize the pressure on the calcaneus. • Progress from an easy to an aggressive massage of the arch, toes and calves.• Adjust the use of your running shoes to spend more time in a more supportive training shoe compared to a lightweight, less supportive racing-type shoe.• Utilize the latest physical therapy modalities and rehab devices to reduce swelling and decrease pain.• Increased calf stretching to increase the pain-free movement of the ankle joint. • Be assessed by a biomechanical specialist to consider utilizing orthotics, heel lifts and/or arch supports, depending upon your lower extremity alignment and biomechanics.

Asking the Right Questions Like a Pro Here’s what a smart pro athlete would ask his/her sports medicine specialists to ensure a fast and safe return to sports:1. Are you certain of the diagnosis?2. Do I need an x-ray or MRI to determine the extent of this injury?3. What are all of my options in treating this injury?4. What can I expect with this injury for the next 2, 4 and 6 weeks?5. Who do you consider to be the expert heel pain rehab specialist in this area?6. Will I be given a detailed rehabilitation protocol to direct my rehab for both my therapist and me?

Runner’s Guide to Beating Heel Pain

Elite Sports Medicine Tips for Runners • If You Want to Keep Running, Start Treatment Fast – Arch pain and heel pain are not injuries to ignore. Start the treatment fast and you could be running again soon. • Sole Searching – The shoes are typically the source of your problem. Old worn-out shoes and improper fitting shoes are common factors that lead to burning feet pain for runners of all ages. • Ice is a Runner’s Friend – Here’s the truth: Ice hurts but it’s exactly what you need for this injury. The Pros will tell you that ice is their best teammate. Stop complaining and do what you need to do….ICE and lots of it. • What’s My Time? – As a runner who is probably still running and, because of this, your recovery time may be slightly longer. As long as there is no stress fracture, no large bone spur or no significant plantar fasciitis, the downtime for this injury will typically range from a couple of days to a few weeks.

Running Up the StairsFrank, Dr. Radical, Reynolds

Timmy used to run on the beach,Now he works downtown; it’s out of his reach, it’s tough, it’s tough.

Jenny dreams of running on hills,But Jacksonville’s flat, with no training thrills, oh no, too slow.

She says we’ve got to train hard, and where we can,And not think too hard ‘bout other places we ran:The old Acosta Bridge and the Main Street span…

But now, a great training plan:

(Chorus)Oh, oh, we’re half way there, Oh, oh, running up the stairs,

Use the rail; see if I care,Oh, oh, running up the stairs.

Timmy’s got his shoes in his pack,They’re meeting in the well, he’s on his way back from class, such class.

Jenny’s set to climb 15 floors, The people she had to deal with all day…what bores, who snores?

We’ve got to sprint up these 15 flights,Inside we won’t need our running tights,

The building’s off-limits on weekends and nights, so now let’s go…Ascend to new heights!

(Repeat chorus)

We’ve got to run fast and not get caught,By security guards or it’ll all be for naught…

(Repeat chorus)

I Run AloneFrank, Dr. Radical, Reynolds

Don’t Miss!THE LAST GASP

Monday, Dec. 26, 2:00 PM35th Annual!

JTC Running’s Genuine 5k Cross-Country Race

I run alone, yeah, with nobody else.I run alone, yeah, with nobody else.

You know when I run alone, I prefer to be by myself.

Every morning just before sunrise, daily without fail,Just me and my old Adidas, get ready to hit the trail,

And we run alone, yeah, with nobody else. You know when I run alone, I prefer to be by myself.

The other night I was sleeping, but my mind went on overload,So I grabbed my iPod and earbuds, and out we went on the road,

And we ran alone, yeah, with nobody else. You know when I run alone, I prefer to be by myself.

I got invited to go on a Hash run, but I went to the track instead,Just me and my old pair of Nikes, and my raggedy hat on my head,

And we ran alone, yeah, with nobody else. You know when I run alone, I prefer to be by myself.

The whole track club done give up on me, it’s a terrible thing to see,The only ones who’ll run with me are New Balance and Saucony,

And we run alone, yeah, with nobody else. You know when I run alone, I prefer to be by myself.
