Page two Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Last Sunday Jesus taught the people with Blessings and Woes: “Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude and insult you, and denounce your name as evil on account of the Son of Man. Rejoice and leap for joy on that day. Behold, your reward will be great in heaven. For their ancestors treated the prophets in the same way. Woe to you when all speak well of you, for their ancestors treated the false prophets in this way.” (Luke 6:22-23, 26)

This Sunday Jesus tells his disciples, “Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.” (Luke 6:27-36) This takes the commandments of God to a whole new level. At times it’s hard to love those who love us. Jesus calls us to take the commandments of love to the extreme and love with the intensity of God: “Love your enemies and do good to them and lend expecting nothing back; then your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High, for he himself is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked. Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.” (Luke 6:35-36)

Look at the Crucifix, this is not a sign of mediocre love. Jesus died on the Cross for the just and the unjust. For those who wept under his Cross because of their deep love for him and those who spat at him and even thrust a spear into his side. Jesus died on the Cross for all human beings. We are called to love with the intensity of Jesus dying on the Cross. Is this difficult? Of course it is. Is this impossible? Remember what Archangel Gabriel said to Blessed Virgin Mary, “For nothing will be impossible for God.” (Luke 1:37) Remember what Jesus said to his disciples, “For human beings this is impossible, but not for God, for God all things are possible.” (Matthew 19:26)

With the help of God, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, we can love our enemies, we can do good to those who hate us, bless those who curse us, pray for those who mistreat us.

This week with God’s help, “Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.”

HORIZON PREGNANCY CLINICVolunteer OpportunitiesF o r t h o s e i n t e r e s t e d i n v o l u n t e e r i n g a t H o r i z o n Pregnancy Clinic (office help, client advocate, van driver) there wil l be a Volunteer Orientat ion on Thursday, March 7 at 10:00 a.m. Training will be on Saturday, March 9, 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. and Sunday, March 10, 1:00–5:00 p.m. All meetings will be held at Horizon, 15061 Springdale Street #109, HB. For info call 714-897-7500.

There are over 11,000 homeless school kids in Orange County. Of this group, the 18-24-year-old population is the largest group sleeping on the streets. Some of these kids have run away from extreme sexual, physical, or emotional abuse. Many become victims of human trafficking and feel they have no home, no hope, and no way out. Build Futures takes homeless youth ages 18–24 off the streets and into safe housing. Their “Steps to Success” program helps youth develop job skills, personal finance, workplace behavior, and basic life skills to achieve independence and become self-supporting.

This weekend Justice & Peace Ministry will host its fifth annual Bus Pass and Gift Card Drive to assist Build Futures. Bus passes are essential for youth to seek jobs, resources and shelter. One-day passes are available for $4.50 each at Ralphs or you can purchase them online at https://passsales.octa.net. Another great help is gift cards that youth can use to buy healthy meals at restaurants like Subway, and clothing and basic necessities at stores like Walmart. It is easier for Build Futures to distribute small denomination gift cards. So, if you planned to give a $25 card, Build Futures would be very grateful for five $5 cards.

This weekend, February 23-24, volunteers from the Justice & Peace Ministry will accept bus passes, gift cards, and cash donations at tables outside the Duffy Center after morning Masses and in the parish center after evening Masses. Your support will help vulnerable youth break the cycle of homelessness and abuse and build stable, productive, and independent lives. For more about Build Futures and how you can help, visit www.BuildFutures.org or call 714-907-7358.

The rain continues to play havoc with our schedule. Although things continue to get worked on, the pace is just not as fast as we would like.

The work on Springdale for the fire sprinklers and fire hydrant has been completed although it won’t be repaved until the connections are made on this side of the street. The hydrant is in place. We are waiting for the last SCE inspection so that we can get the sidewalk back in use.

Soil mitigation continues as best as can be done between storms. Excavation for the Blessed Sacrament Chapel has begun, but there are a lot of roots from the six pine trees that were in that spot. The soils engineer has indicated that we will be unable to reuse that soil so we’ll have to get more to replace it.

Laying the electrical conduit and the plumbing continues, as does the slot cuts for the slab foundation work.

Thank you for your continued support, both financially and in prayer.—Pat Powers, Pastoral Manager CATHOLIC NIGHT AT

Encountering the Loving PresenceDifficulties Can Become Our HelpThe Season of Lent is a good opportunity to search for deeper spiritual meaning in our Life Journey and to develop our inner spirituality, learning to encounter God’s loving presence in our difficulties by reflecting on them in the light of faith.

As one of many Lenten practices to choose from, the Families of Nazareth Movement is offering a series of reflections on excerpts from the book God Alone Suffices. We invite you to come to one or all of the meetings, one hour per week, to gain insights on how God is actively present in our daily lives, meets us, and wants to transform us through events we encounter.

Transforming people one at a time is at the heart of God's plan for the world. —Matthew Kelly

Welcome Did you ever think of welcoming as a MISSION? Did you ever think of a SMILE or a HELLO as a HEALING TOUCH? How often does God, in His Loving Kindness, help you along your way throughout the day? Why not be there for other people—giving God's love and kindness to them to start their day!

Just by saying "Good Morning," "Hi," or Welcome," to your fellow parishioners as they come into Mass on Sunday may jump-start their day and help them pass on the love and care you gave them. Would you like to pass on the love of God to others? There is a chance for you!

We need you to help us spread his love and joy to those coming into Mass on Sundays. This is our mission. Jesus has done so much for us. It is our turn to pay it forward. It's easy! Come about 10–15 minutes early to the Mass you usually attend. Spend that time in the entry way just smiling and greeting your fellow worshipers. THAT'S IT! WE NEED YOU!Please call Betty at 714-536-0585 (leave a message).

Read: Sunday Gospel, February 24 • Luke 6:27-38 Refl ect: Jesus teaches his disciples to be merciful as God is merciful. Teaching children to treat others as they want to be treated supports them in developing the traits of generosity, empathy and compassion.

Listen: Home Where Faith and Family Meet, a podcast. Be inspired by real conversations among real families, some even from St. Bonaventure.

Talk: In todays' Gospel reading Jesus describes how we are to act toward one another. What he says may sound like what we mean by the phrase "going the extra mile." After reading the Gospel, discuss whether the actions Jesus describes are easy and consider why we might act in these ways if they seem diffi cult.

Live: God loves us all the time by going the extra mile for us. During a time of quiet refl ection, invite each family member to choose an action for the week in which he or she will go the "extra mile" for the family.______________________________________________________________
