LARGE GROUP: Story (20 minutes) • Worship (5 minutes) Engage kids’ hearts through a dynamic and interactive Bible story, worship, and prayer experience in a Large Group setting.

AUDIO: Play high-energy music as kids enter. VIDEO: Theme Loop

Leader enters, dressed in running attire and lifting small dumbbells up and down.

OPENER LEADER: (out of breath) “Hello . . . everyone . . . it’s good to see you today.

Stop lifting the weights and bend over to “catch your breath.”

“Whew! That was a good training session. You might wonder why I’m wearing these clothes and squeezing in a workout here at [your environment’s name]. It’s because this month we’re training for a 5K together! Have you heard of a 5K before? It’s a type of race that’s five kilometers long . . . which is a little over three miles. “Don’t worry . . . if running’s not your thing, we’re not ACTUALLY going to run that far. But we ARE going to have some fun as we TRAIN for a 5K, because there’s no better way to live out commitment! “Sure, you could go out and run a 5K without any training . . . and you might barely make it across the finish line. But if you make a plan, and put it into practice, you’ll be able to run with a lot more excitement and energy—and you might even enjoy it! So I’ve made a plan for us to train. Now we get to put it into practice. There’s a lot that goes into training your body for a race, including training for agility, endurance, and flexibility! (Reference the two courses in the room.) “I’ve set up a training course to get us started on the right foot—unless you’re left-footed, of course. Ha! You’ll get to practice racing while also testing and improving your agility. When you have good agility, you’re able to think fast and move your body quickly to respond. “First, let’s divide into two teams!

Make two evenly divided teams and line everyone up behind the courses. (If you have an odd number of kids, you or another adult can join one of the teams to even things up.) Make sure that the kids are adequately spaced out as they stand in line. Talk through the different stations of the course and demonstrate each move so the kids know what to do.

“This is a relay. So the first person will go through the whole course then run back and air-tag the next person, and so on. Remember, you’re not allowed to start until your team member runs back and tags you! The first team to have all team members finish the race, wins! “Are we ready, everyone? Let’s do this! Three . . . two . . . one . . . GO! AUDIO: Upbeat, energetic music

Comment on the action and encourage the kids as they compete. Watch closely to make sure the kids don’t start before they get air-tagged by their teammate. Declare the team that finishes first as the winner, but also let the other team finish (and cheer for them) so everyone gets a chance to compete. If the kids do the course faster than expected and time allows, you can mix the teams up to go again or do best of three.

“Nice job, everyone! That was some great agility training. You’re already showing your commitment to our training plan. Hopefully you’re not too tired, though, because we’re going to keep moving as we sing, dance, and worship God together!” WORSHIP LEADER: “Before we get started, let’s watch this. VIDEO: Live Loud from Get Reel “God is always with us. He can give us the strength we need to be committed as we choose to follow Him every day. Let’s learn this new song together that reminds us that God is faithful. VIDEO: “You Are Faithful” Dance Moves Music Video “What an awesome truth to sing about—that God’s plans for us are always good! Let’s dig a little deeper into that together. You can have a seat.” BIBLE STORY VIDEO: Host Intro VIDEO: 252 Story VIDEO: Host Outro CLOSER SLIDE: Theme Background

LEADER: “When we follow our training plan, we can grow stronger in our relationship with God. Then we’ll be able to practice loving God and loving others, every single day. SLIDE: Bottom Line [Bottom Line] “Keep practicing what matters most. Say that with me.” LEADER and KIDS: [Bottom Line] “Keep practicing what matters most.” LEADER: “Our memory verse comes from a letter Paul wrote to his friend Timothy who was training to be a church leader like Paul. It’s 1 Timothy 4:8. Let’s say it together.” SLIDE: Memory Verse LEADER and KIDS: “Training the body has some value. But being godly has value in every way. It promises help for the life you are now living and the life to come.” 1 Timothy 4:8, NIrV LEADER: “Nice job! Let’s talk to God and ask Him for the strength we need to follow Him.” SLIDE: Theme Background PRAY LEADER: “Dear God, thank You for showing us how we can train every day and grow in our relationship with You. We want to run our race well. We want to do what matters most: love You and love other people. Thank You for giving us everything we need to do that. Help us remember to hear from You . . . pray to You . . . talk about You . . . and live FOR You. We love You, and we pray these things in Jesus’ name. Amen.” DISMISS LEADER: “Now let’s high-knee it to Small Group and talk about how we can [Bottom Line] keep practicing what matters most!” (Demonstrate a high knee slow-motion run.)

Dismiss kids to their small groups.

GETTING READY Here’s everything you need to know to get ready for this week. STORY: Communicating God’s truth in engaging ways (20 minutes) WORSHIP: Inviting people to respond to God (5 minutes) 1. Opener/Closer What You Need:

• Leader • Runner’s outfit (can be simply a race shirt and a pinned-on number, or you can go all out with

shorts, tank, sweatband, running shoes, and socks) • Two small dumbbells • Props for setting up an agility course (see “What You Do”), such as:

o Masking tape o Orange cones o Agility markers/paper plates o Tires/hula hoops o Agility ladder

Music and Sound Effects:

• Upbeat music to use as kids enter and exit the room • Upbeat, energetic music for when the kids are doing the training course

Large Group Visuals:

• Theme Loop Video • Theme Background Slide • Bottom Line Slide • Memory Verse Slide

What You Do:

• Download and print this week’s tech sheet for everyone helping with Large Group. • Download the slides and videos and have them ready to use. • Download music from a resource such as iTunes® and have it ready to play. Note: Legally a song

belongs to the songwriter/composer who created it and the publisher who markets it. Performance rights organizations (PROs) license public performances (live or recorded) of their members’ music. Usually, but not always, PROs give general permission for performances in worship services. We recommend you obtain permission from the PRO representing the song or the publisher of the song you wish to play. PROs in the U.S. are ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC. For a list of PROs in your part of the world: www.iamusic.com. Look at the copyright on the CD or sheet music to discover the PRO or publisher of the song. It is up to you to make sure your church has permission to perform or play a recording of a song.

• Decide where you want to set up your two parallel agility courses. If you have the ability to do so and weather allows, outside is a great option. But inside works just fine, too! If you don’t have many physical props, you can still create a fun course using masking tape on the floor. Incorporate activities such as:

o high-knees running (can use tires or hula hoops to help) o plyometric jumps (put tape on the ground on both sides at a distance that is challenging

but not impossible to jump)

6

o dot drills (place tape or other flat markers on the ground and have the kids jump from dot to dot)

o zig-zag runs (set up cones and have the kids run between them) o shuttle runs (use cones to create a short distance that kids can sprint between, touching

the cones each time) o agility ladder running (you can use an actual agility ladder or make one on the ground

with tape; have the kids run through it with hopscotch-like moves). • Note: If you do not have enough kids to divide into two teams, this can also be a race against

the clock. If you plan to go this route, test out how long it takes you to get through the course, then multiply it by the number of kids you have to figure out a reasonable time to set the clock.

2. Worship What You Need:

• Leader(s) Large Group Visuals:

• Live Loud Video from Get Reel • “You Are Faithful” Dance Moves Music Video

What You Do:

• Download the videos and have them ready to use. Note: Make sure your church has obtained licensing rights to play or perform music. You can obtain a license to perform worship music from Christian Copyright Licensing International (www.ccli.com). It covers over 200,000 worship songs for congregational singing. You are responsible for including the copyright information on all songs reproduced under the Church Copyright License (including song lyrics projected onscreen). This includes the song title, writer credit(s), copyright notice, and your church’s CCLI license number. You can include this information on one of the lyric slides, or you can create a separate slide detailing this information, but the copyright information must appear at least once for each song you play or perform. For example: “Hallelujah” words and music by John Doe ©2000 Good Music Co. CCLI License # 0000

SOCIAL: Providing Time for Fun Interaction (15 minutes) 1. Early Arriver Made to Play: an activity that encourages learning through following guidelines and/or working as a group What You Need: Offering container; dry erase board, paper easel, or piece of butcher paper; and dry erase marker or marker What You Do:

• Welcom kids by name to Small Group. • Invite kids to put their offering in the container. • Ask the kids to think of something that they have to practice in order to do it well.

o If they get stuck thinking of something, you can give them ideas like these: ! Tying your shoes ! Reading ! Writing ! Baseball ! Singing ! Dancing ! Cheerleading ! Making your bed

• As the kids share ideas, write each one on the board or paper. • Once you have eight to ten ideas on the list, play charades with the kids’ ideas. • Ask for a volunteer to go first. • Let the volunteer choose something from the list and act it out without speaking, while the rest of

the group tries to guess the action. • Whoever guesses correctly gets to be the new actor. • Cross each action off the list after it is acted out.

2. Opening Activity Made to Move: an activity that increases the oxygen in the brain and taps into the energy in the body What You Need: Small prizes and prepared obstacle course (chairs, red string, pool noodles, cones, agility ladders, etc.) What You Do:

Note: If the obstacle course has not been set up before Small Group begins, enlist the kids to help you set it up and make it a fun part of the activity. • Guide kids to line up and take turns going through the obstacle course. • Help them space themselves out so no one trips or gets in someone else’s way. • As each kid reaches the end of the course, give them a small prize. • If time and interest allow, let kids go again, but this time going backwards.

What You Say: “That was so much fun! You guys did an awesome job going through our obstacle course. Was there any part of the obstacle course that was harder than other parts? (Allow kids to answer.) Sometimes doing something hard takes practice. [Transition] Let’s head to Large Group and hear a story about practicing the most important things.” Lead your group to the Large Group area.

GROUPS: Creating a Safe Place to Connect (25 minutes) 1. May I Run the Race? [Talk about God | Bible Story Review] Made to Play: an activity that encourages learning through following guidelines and/or working as a group What You Need:Floor tape and Bible What You Do:

• Tape a start line and a finish line on the floor. Place the lines as far apart as possible. • Instruct kids to line up on the start line. • Tell the kids you’ll read the verses from Large Group today and when they hear the key words,

they can take a hop forward. o When you read 1 Corinthians 9:24-25, kids can take ONE jump forward when they hear

the key words “race, run, runner, or prize.” o When you read Matthew 22:36-40, they take TWO jumps forward when they hear the

key word “love.” • Repeat at least three times.

o During the first round, shout the key words to help them remember what they are. o During the second and third round, read the verses like normal and see who remembers

the key words. • If a kid jumps on a word that isn’t a key word, they go back to the start line.

What You Say: “Sometimes it was really hard to remember our key words to jump on. You really had to LISTEN and HEAR what I said. I also had to TALK in order for you to move. That reminds me of what we will learn about and practice all month long: Hear, Pray, Talk, and Live. That’s our plan to help us practice our faith in Jesus. I can’t wait to continue to learn alongside each of you as we [Bottom Line] keep practicing what matters most.”

*2. Swat the Answers [Live for God | Application Activity] Made to Imagine: an activity that promotes empathy and facilitates concrete application through role-play and reenactment What You Need: “Swat These” Activity Page, flyswatters or paper plates, glue, craft sticks What You Do:

• Guide kids to spread out around your small group space. • Give each kid a “Swat These” page and a flyswatter. • Review the four steps to our PLAN from Large Group: Hear, Pray, Talk, Live. Promp the kids to

point to each one on their page. • Explain that you will read a sentence, and they will use their flyswatter to hit the word or image

that correctly fills in the blank of the sentence. • Before reading the sentences below, do a fun round of calling out the words “Hear, Pray, Talk,

and Live” in a quick and random order. • Let kids swat their page as fast as they can, trying to keep up with you. • Sentences:

o “When my Small Group Leader reads the Bible out loud, I am practicing _____ing from God.” (Hear)

o “When I am scared at night in my bedroom, I ____ to God to protect me and help me be brave.” (Pray)

o “When I have a question about God, I can ____ to my Small Group leader about it.” (Talk)

o “When I practice Hearing from God, Praying to God, and Talking about God, it helps me ____ for God.” (Live)

o “Reading a devotional helps me _____ from God.” (Hear) o “I can ____ to God anytime, anywhere, and about anything.” (Pray) o “I can ______ to my friends and family about God.” (Talk) o “The way we _____ our lives can point others to Jesus.” (Live)

• After giving kids a chance to swat the word or image on their page, announce the correct answer.

• If a kid swats the wrong word, only they will know, but if they get upset about being wrong, encourage them to try again and do their best on the next one.

What You Say: “Swatting our answers sure was fun. To Hear from God, Pray to God, Talk about God, and Live for God are all ways we can grow our faith. Just like a runner has a plan and train to get better at running, we have this plan to train and grow in our faith. The cool thing is that you’ll ALWAYS be practicing your faith! I’m still practicing my faith right now! [Make it Personal] (Share a story about when you lived out part of this plan., i.e. you kept a prayer journal, someone ahead of you in faith talked to you about God, someone showed you what it means to hear from God, or you lived out your faith and showed someone else who God is. Let this be a moment for you to show kids that you’re still growing in your faith, too!) [Bottom Line] “Keep practicing what matters most.”

3. Train the Body [Hear from God | Memory Verse Activity] Made to Move: an activity that increases the oxygen in the brain and taps into the energy in the body What You Need: Bibles, “Train the Body” Activity Page, cups What You Do:

• Help kids look up and read the verse using the Bible navigation tips below: Finding verses with kindergartners: Guide children to open the Bibles to the marked page. Point to the word 1 Timothy at the top of the page as you say, “First Timothy.” Then guide children to find the big number 4 on the page. Explain that this is the chapter number. Finally, guide them to look under the big 4 for the little 8. This is the verse number. Tell them to leave their finger on the verse as you read the verse aloud. Then lead everyone to say the verse together. Finding verses with 1st graders: Guide them to open their Bibles to the front and find the table of contents. Hold up a Bible opened to the table of contents to show the kids what the page looks like. When the kids find the table of contents, lead them to find 1 Timothy in the list under “New Testament.” You can help by telling them that Timothy starts with the letters T-I with the number 1 in front of it. When the kids find 1 Timothy, lead them to look at the page number beside the word. Explain that the number tells them on what page they can find 1 Timothy. Help the kids find the page. When they find 1 Timothy, explain that the big numbers on the page are the chapter numbers. Help them find chapter 4. Explain that the small numbers are verse numbers. Help them find verse 8 in chapter 4.

• Reread the first sentence aloud: Training the body has some value.

o Engage kids in a quick conversation about how a body gets “trained” through running, going to the gym, eating a healthy diet, sports practice, etc.

• Split kids into multiple teams based on how many kids you have in your group, no more than six kids on a team.

• Place the slips of paper with the words for the verse (six total for each team) under a cup. • Place each team’s cups on the other side of the room. • Guide each team to stand in a single file line across from their cups, about 15 feet away. • When you say, “Go,” the first kid in line will run to their team’s cups and look under each cup

until they find “Training.” • Once they find “Training,” they run back and the next kid runs to a cup to find “The.” • This continues until all the kids have gone to the cups to find their word and spell out the

memory verse. • You may need to help younger ones know which word to look for and what letters spell that

word. • The goal is to be the first team to find all the words and put them in order. • When all the teams have finished, say the verse together as a group. • For an added challenge (or if your group needs to run off some energy), make a rule that kids

can only look under one cup each turn. What You Say: “Wow! You guys are so fast! Running to find all the words to part of our verse sure was fun. Just like running makes our bodies healthier, we get to learn the rest of our verse in the next few weeks. It’s all about how God wants us to [Bottom Line] keep practicing what matters most. God wants us to have a relationship with Him, and to do that we have to practice hearing from God, praying to God, talking about God, and living for God.”

4. Pray and Dismiss [Pray to God | Prayer Activity] Made to Reflect: an activity that creates space for personal processing and application What You Need: Small prizes from “Opening Activity” What You Do:

• Ask kids to gather around you at a safe distance from you and each other. • Ask: What are some ways you can [Bottom Line] keep practicing what matters most? • Some examples to help them if they get stuck:

o Doing GodTime cards o Praying o Treating others the way Jesus would treat them o Coming to church o Participating in worship o Listening during the Bible story o Reading your Bible o Talking to someone older who follows Jesus

• Pray for the kids and ask God to help them [Bottom Line] keep practicing what matters most.

What You Say: “Those are some great ways we can [Bottom Line] keep practicing what matters most. Remember, you can do all of these things, no matter where you are. You don’t have to be at church to practice what matters most. It’s actually super important for you to practice these things in other places and at other times, too. So let’s ask God to help us look for chances to practice the things that matter most. “God, we ask that You help us [Bottom Line] keep practicing what matters most, even when it’s hard. I can’t wait to see each of these kids grow in their relationship with You as they continue to practice hearing from You, praying to You, talking about You, and living for You. Help me do all these things every day, as well. Thank You for sending us Your Son, Jesus, and for loving us so much. It’s in Jesus’ name we pray, amen.” As adults arrive to pick up, prompt kids to show off the prizes they got during the obstacle course and help them recite all the steps to the PLAN that they learned to help them practice what matters most.
