As we can see from the table the Sun/beach opportunities as a reason

for going on holiday is the most common between the of 25-39 and the

spending time with the family section is the other most common

between the age of 25-49 and 40-54. So according to this statistic

table.

The two most important factor for the Hungarian during his/her

holiday is the weather conditions and the quality of the

accomodation.

In 2011, some EU respondents were asked to name the first and second

most important information sources, the recommendations of friends

and colleagues (58%) was the most common answer, followed by the

internet (45%), personal experience (29%), and travel/tourist

agencies (21%).

The most important factors for the Hungarians in decision making

about their holidays are the recommendations, and on the second

place the Internet.

As we can see the majority of European people prefer to arrange their holidays using the Internet. For the Hungarian people the mostcommon is also the web interface to arrange their holidays.

Minimum of 4 nights

Over a tenth of EU people (11%) who go on holiday say they visit

Spain. This is followed by Italy (9%), France (8%), Germany (5%),

Austria (5%), and Greece (4%).

Majority of travelers say that they go on holiday in their own

country. Go for a holiday domestically is most popular in Turkey,

where 91% of people stayed in their own country for their holiday,

followed by Greece (80%), Bulgaria (77%), Italy (74%) and Croatia

(73%). Domestic holidays is least common in Luxembourg (2%) and

Malta (5%). As we can see from the table above, for the Hungarians

the percentage of interest in the column of Greece is still a really

good percentage. In my opinion Greece is a very popular destination

for the Hungarian people.

Hungarians prefer the short-stay trips:

Due to the economic crisis Hungarian people don’t have the money to travel aborad or even to go for a holiday for more than 3-4 days in general.

In wich country do European people want to spend their holidays:

Hungarian interest of traveling to these countries has shown a

really low percent, but in the column of Greece with 6% is still the

best interest.

Hungary

In Hungary (2013) a little more passengers are booked a year in

advance of the holiday, as in past years. Experts agreed that the

market is moving, the pressure of the crisis is lower, and people

have been spent much more on vacations, holidays and recreation

these years. The statistics show that in general people prefer the

first minute rather than the last-minute discounts offered.

For the Hungarians this year Greece is the hit, especially the

cheaper bus trips - at between 100 to 240 Euros - but the flights

booked to Greece is increasing beautifully also. The Mediterranean

area is also popular after stagnation in recent years, and now

increased the demand towards Tunisia again.

The crisis had changed the travel habits:

Who had spent 1000-1500 Euros on a vacation during the previous

years, now they certainly try to spend only 500-700 Euros this year.

The demand exists, people really love to travel, there is a need for

relaxation, rejuvenation, but today they can only afford themselves

in more humble circumstances due to the crisis. It seems that Greece

is the most popular destination and the other favorite country is

Bulgaria for the Hungarians.

The Hungarians abroad travellings in 2012 (facts):

● In 2012, the Hungarian population made a total of 16.1 million

trips abroad, 3.0 % less than a year earlier. More than two-

thirds of these ( 69.8 % of , or 11.3 million trips) was a one

day travelling. Compared to 2011, the number of overnight trips

abroad by 0.3% and the multi-day foreign trips decreased by

8.5%.

● 47.9 % of all trips (7.7 million trips) happened because of

tourism motivations. The number of tourism motivated trips

decreased by 3.8%, compared to 2011 . The bulk of the one-day

trips occured of non-tourism purposes, but shopping, learning,

working and hiring.

● While the majority of multi-day trips (87.4 %) were driven by

tourism motivation. The tourism motivated abroad travelling was

4.3 million, which compared to 2011 is a 8.1 % decrease. The

travel motivated foreign travellings for only one day were

44.9% and the rest (55,1%) were the more than one day travels.

● In 2012 the main motivation of foreign tourism trips (one or

more days ) is to have a holiday (46.3% ), and visiting

relatives and/or friends (38.1 %). The third most frequently

mentioned reason is a business trip or an exhibition, a fair

(8.2% ). Hungarians travel abroad for healthcare and religious

reasons primarily for one day.

A significant decrease in time spent on trips abroad

● In 2012, the Hungarians total traveled days abroad were 43.9

million, 14.7 % less than a year earlier. The decrease is

mostly due to the reducing time (decreased by 18,8%) spent on

the multi-day trips abroad but the number of overnight trips

were less also.

● The hungarian population spent 30.9 million days abroad

beacause of tourism purposes, 8.7 % less than in 2011. The

multi-day travels decreased by 10%, while the one day trip

tourism grew by 2.1%.

● The average lenght of travel abroad was 2.7 days in 2012, it

was 3.1 in 2011.

● The average duration of travels because of religious purposes

was 1.5 days. The average duration of multi-day traveling

abroad because of tourism purposes is 6.4 days.

● The lenght of multi-day trips for the purposes of recreation

was 6.8 days in 2012. In 2011 that number was 15.0 days so this

is a huge reduction.

Financial part:

● 1,3 billion Euros spent on tourism motivated travels by the

Hungarian population in 2012.

● Hungarians spent a total of 1,7 billion Euros in their foreign

visits, 3.5% less than in 2011. Most of the money(74.9 %) was

spent on travels beacause of tourism purposes.

● The 1,3 billion Euros is a 0.5 % decrease compared to the

previous year.

● Overnight tourist trips amounted to 70,2 million Euros (+20,7%

growth compared to 2011). For multi-day hiking trips 1,2

billion billion HUF spent ( 94.6% of the trips abroad).

Compared to 2011, -1.5% has been spent.

● The largest proportion of spending on travel was for holiday

spending (760 million Euros) , it is 58,1% of the money spent

on trips abroad by Hungary.

● The visits of family and/or relatives was significant it was

260 million Euros , 19.9% of the spendings. The money spent on

business travel, exhibitions and fairs was 205 million Euros,

so 15,8%. During visits to cultural and sporting events 45,2

milion Euros ( 3.5%) has been spent by the Hungarians.

The Hungarian tourists most popular ( leisure and business)

destinations is Germany and

Austria. The top ten destinations to do with Romania , Croatia , the

Czech Republic, Slovakia ,

Serbia , Italy, France and Ukraine are included (shown in „Hungarian

tourists motivation” table below).

Hungarian travellings and the travel habits:

Crisis: This year one-fifth of the travelers stayed at home!

A screening of travelers demographic characteristics revealed that

the majority of regular travelers are more than 50 years old and

they have higher level of education, three-quarters of respondents

live in relationships. Two of three travelers have no children. Out

of four travelers, three live in the capital. The majority of the

travelers choose European destinations (94 %), the second in the

list of continents is Africa (12%). In the ranking of European

countries the Western European countries seem to loose of their

attractiveness, especially those that do not have beaches and not

summer vacation destinations. Among travelers turning more and more

popular Greece and Croatia as a holiday destination. The economic

crisis has somewhat affected the travel, those who spent their

vacation in a foreign country last year said that this year (2013)

they can only afford to go to holiday domestically. The time of the

holiday is reducing compared to previous years statistics, is

typically between 6-10 days and they only start to book 1-1.5 months

before they go.

The Hungarian traveler looking for travel information on the

Internet!

In terms of the travel habits we can say that the majority of

travelers like a hotel (37%) and apartments (34%). The beach holiday

is the most popular (70%), the cross-country trip is more popular

among the over-50s. In terms of the method for traveling, 51% of the

travelers prefer going on holiday by a car, 34% of them choosing the

plane and the number of choosing other form of public transport is

negligible. Families with children prefer the apartments and rather

use a car for travel. Travelers gather information about the

destination and travel procedures from multiple sources before

departure, 84% of them searching on the internet, 42% of them take

into account the recommendations of friends, while 34% use the

catalogs of tour operators as well. Of course, there is some overlap

between categories, as most of them using multiple sources to obtain

infomation. On Internet the leaders clearly the various search

engines after them the travel agency sites and portals and news

sites. Most of the travelers watching possible accommodations,

airfare, and discount rates on the Web.

Some more information:

The Greece trip numbers suffered a huge setback due to the crisis,

the statistics reliability is questionable (the Hungarians and / or

the Greeks defraud nearly sixty thousand capita somewhere in the

statistics). The Hungarians’ primary motivation for travel or

tourism is relaxing, In the Hungarian tourism the the word "price

sensitivity" is almost an integral part of the basic existence.

The primary motive for traveling to Greece is the leisure time.

Overall for the Hungarians who visit Greece for holiday the second

interest is the culture (the Greek way of life, visiting museums,

etc), the third is sightseeing, the religion is the fourth (for

example, Meteora and Mount Athos monastery) and the fifth is

gastronomy.

Which destination is chosen and why: The majority of people (about

85%) have a personal preference about why to chose beside a

destination. In the form of travel, the vast majority prefer calling

travel agency for help, 45% of people choose a bus trip, while

flying and going on holiday by an own car is only 20-20 %. Behind

these percentages are clearly economic reasons are hidden (in other

words, we like to choose what is cheaper).

85% of the Hungarian travelers spend their holiday nights in an

apartment, but half of the travelers prefer hotel-type apartment.

The returnees to Greece is an extremely large group, 60% are

typically looking up for new areas during their trips.

The days spent by the Hungarians in Greece are typically between 7

days and 10 days. ( Obviously, these travel agency offers greatly

influencing this number

In Greece, 85% of Hungarians traveling on holiday without travel

supplies and, they like to maintain themselves. It is interesting

that 30% of the travelers bring food supplies from Hungary to Greece

with themselves.

It is a great surprise that the vast majority of Hungarian people do

not detect difference between the Greek mainland and the Greek

island groups as a holiday destination. Nearly 50% of Hungarians

have no preference between island or mainland, and 30 % dont

perceive the difference between a Greek island or just a trip to

Halkidiki. 30% of Hungarians think that a holiday on a Greek island

is more expensive than a vacation on the mainland. All in all, it

had to be concluded from this that typically we do not consciously

feel the difference between Greek islands and the Greek mainland.

In 2013 the Hungarians were asked about where do they want to spend

their next holiday (they had to point a destination on the Greek

map) if they would have the money for it. The hit was in Halkidiki

(13%) , Western Greece and the Ionian Islands ( 16%). In the second

case, the islands have markedly increased in popularity like The

Cyclades, the Dodecanese and Crete, they took the 35% of the

responses and there was a high interest drop in land destinations

and the Ionian islands.

I made a conclusion about the difference in our minds between the

Greek islands and the Greek mainland. It is that to travel to the

Greek islands is more expensive (since it is necessary to travel by

plane), and which is more expensive and unattainable is more

appealing at the same time.

In my opinion the Hungarian is generally travels to Greece because

of having a restful seaside holiday, but it is foolish to say that

we are not interested in the Greek culture and the Greek life.

It also turned out for me that there is a huge difference between

Greek islands and the Greek islands, although the "average

Hungarian" couple think that the Greek Islands including only the

Ionian island, Crete and Rhodes and they don’t know anything about

the rest - the real Greek island world -.

Finally I can say that a large number of Hungarian travelers use

travel agents to travel to Greece and that the travel agencies have

an undeniable role undeniable role in, if these offices would not be

close to half of Greek destinations would fall out of sight.

Nothing to worry about:

Foreign tourists return to Greece. The first five months of this

year the tourism revenues rose by 15.5 percent.Tourism experts say

that this year (2013) will rise by 10 percent to EUR 11 billion in

tourism revenues.

There was a drop in last year tourism because many people avoid the

country because of the fear that Greece will be eliminated from the

euro area, and because of the crisis and riots break out.

The increasing number of foreign tourists is reflected in the Greek

balance of payments as well. In May, 35.5 million euros showed a

surplus of the current account, while a year earlier the deficit of

EURO was 1.228 billion.
