MESSAGE FROM THE MASTERSir Ivor Crewe

3

In 2006 we launched an ambitious ten-year campaign to re-endow the College. The target was £55m for the purposes of consolidating the tutorial

system through the endowment of fellowships, providing bursaries for undergraduates from low-income households, establishing full scholarships for graduates and maintaining the fabric of the College buildings. To the best of our knowledge no other Oxford college aimed so high. I am delighted to report that we closed the campaign in September 2016 having met, indeed slightly exceeded, our target.

This has been a wonderful achievement by Univ’s community of Old Members. Altogether 4,628 Old Members made a gift during the ten-year campaign, and most gave frequently and regularly. The proportion who made a contribution in any one year steadily rose over the ten years and reached 35% by 2015. By the end of the campaign, the Annual Fund attracted well over £1m a year in gifts. No other college in Oxford or Cambridge has raised funds on the same scale with such regularity.

A special debt of appreciation is owed to a small group of benefactors, largely anonymous, who provided ‘challenge funding’, committing themselves to match contributions made by Old Members to the Annual Fund and to our Radcliffe graduate scholarship fund. This proved a powerful incentive to prospective donors. We are particularly grateful, too, to the Old Members who organised our annual Golden Anniversary appeals to those who matriculated 50 years earlier.

The £55m raised by the campaign has enabled Univ to withstand the political and economic vagaries of the past decade and fulfil its fundamental purpose: to admit exceptionally able and committed students, irrespective of their financial circumstances, and expose them to an intellectually stretching education through the tutorial system.

Three major benefits made possible by the campaign make the point:

The College can now immediately fill vacancies in the tutorial fellowship even when, as happens quite often, the University fails to make its financial contribution for a few years.

Our bursary scheme has been built up to ensure that undergraduates whose household income falls below £52,000 a year do not have to rely on any parental contribution to meet their living costs at Oxford.

The number of fully funded and endowed graduate scholarships offered by the College has increased from 4 in 2006 to 35 in 2016, the largest number of any mixed college.

The College is deeply grateful to its Old Members and Friends for their generosity and loyalty.

Sir Ivor Crewe Master

The COLLEGE FINANCIALS

In 2015/6 the College continued its programme of improving and extending its facilities. We finished the first part of the long project with Fairfield Residential Home under which they will build a new residential home for elderly people, and the College acquired

the freehold of 115 Banbury Road. This will now give an opportunity to reflect on the potential that the College could unlock with a revived and invigorated north Oxford site.

The College also acquired two houses on the Iffley Road and a former convent at Harberton Mead (near the John Radcliffe Hospital) in order to be able to make more accommodation available to undergraduates and graduates. We expect such opportunities as the convent’s one-acre site to be increasingly scarce and sought after and see it also as a sound store of value for the future.

From an investment point of view, returns were satisfactory at 10.1% (total return after expenses and after interest on the Univ bond). Returns were broadly spread throughout the portfolio, with currency gains on overseas investments after the EU referendum being a feature of the close of the year (year end 31 July). Property returns were satisfactory and with close expert advice a number of good quality investment property acquisitions were made during the year, notwithstanding brisk competition from other bidders. These properties provide useful income at a time when monetary assets do not.

The EU referendum, the US Presidential election, and the Italian referendum show a strong tide of political change, the extent and impact of which is still unclear. The College has a conservative, low-volatility, investment strategy with a long time horizon. It holds significant liquid resources for prudential purposes to provide a stable platform for its academic objectives. At time of writing, it is uncertainty rather than necessarily threatening outcomes that characterise the environment. The College is mindful that change may bring operational challenges as well as investment challenges and seeks to ensure that it remains in a position to respond in a considered way to external opportunities and threats. Through an excellent team of advisers and through engagement with Old Members we seek to remain aware of the possibilities the environment brings.

The moral support, advice, and generosity of Old Members and other supporters is of the greatest importance to the College. Thank you for your support in this year.

It has been another record-breaking year, as Old Members contributed £1,165,000 in new gifts and pledges in support of Univ. This record-breaking sum was raised by the collective donations of 2,358 Old Members around the globe – in total,

34% of Old Members made a contribution, demonstrating once again the loyalty and generosity of Univ alumni.

This wonderful sum will help the College to enhance the opportunities and education it offers to graduates and undergraduates, ensuring that the College is able to attract and retain the best students regardless of their financial background, and continue to rival the top universities worldwide. 58% of this year’s gifts were unrestricted, allowing the College to apply these funds to the area of most urgent need, while the other donations were allocated towards a wide range of important areas, from financial support and bursaries to building renovation and tutorial teaching.

Univ’s graduates and undergraduates are grateful to all Old Members who supported them this year, and in particular to the 1,064 alumni who took the time to speak to students personally during our telephone campaigns in January and April. Our telephone campaigns raised over £417,000, as 72% of those we spoke to chose to make a donation, and many alumni also contributed valuable career advice and insights for current students.

We are also grateful to the class of 1966, whose Golden Reunion weekend event was a great success and who collectively raised over £100,000 in support of their fiftieth anniversary fundraising appeal. This appeal will allow the College to establish a new fund, the 1966 Academic Opportunities Bursary Fund, to enable students to undertake activities such as internships and research in their vacations, removing financial impediments and enhancing students’ academic life and career opportunities.

The College would also like to thank its Young Univ community, as this year alumni aged 35 and under collectively donated a phenomenal £103,000, almost 10% of the Annual Fund total. The Young Univ programme continues to go from strength to strength with a variety of events taking place throughout the year, and we are delighted that so many of our young alumni have chosen to support the College so generously this year.

On behalf of all of us here at Univ, thank you to each and every one of our donors for your loyalty and generosity. I hope that you will choose to support the College again in the coming year, and that we will have an opportunity to welcome you back to Univ at an event in the near future.

FROM JOSIE TURNER, ANNUAL FUND MANAGER

M aking provision for Univ in your will is a particularly personal and thoughtful

way of supporting the College. Legacies have been and continue to be an enormously important source of funds for the College. Were it not for William of Durham’s foresight and legacy gift that was realised in 1249 to support scholars in Oxford, Univ might not be here today.

The William of Durham Club recognises the generosity of those who have made a future provision for Univ, and meets annually for a luncheon in College. While we hope these gifts will not be realised for years to come, we give thanks today to all those listed below, and those who have chosen to remain anonymous, for their quiet generosity.

SINGLE AND REGULAR GIFTS

Single gifts can be made by cheque or credit/debit card. Gifts of all sizes are appreciated and valued; even the most modest of donations not only show your loyalty to Univ but collectively make a vital contribution to the College.

Regular gifts can be set up for a period of one to four years, on either a monthly, quarterly or annual basis. They are of great benefit to Univ as they provide a guaranteed flow of income to the College for the medium term, and enable you to spread the cost of your gift.

Your single or regular gift can be made:

Online Visit www.univ.ox.ac.uk/give

By Post Send a cheque to University College, Oxford OX1 4BH with a completed Gift Form* (available at www.univ.ox.ac.uk/maximiseyourgift)

By Phone Call the Development Office on +44 (0)1865 286208

*This will enable the College to claim Gift Aid on your gift

In the UK If you are a UK taxpayer, through GiftAid we can increase the value of your gift by 25%, at no extra cost to you. For example, a regular gift of £50 a month can be worth £3,000 to Univ over a four-year period.

If you are interested in making a gift of £25,000 or more, please contact Jenny Wilkinson, Senior Development Officer, tel +44 (0)1865 276791,

or email [email protected]

GIFTS OF SHARES Giving via shares is one of the most tax efficient ways of making a charitable gift. As such, it is a great way to support Univ and may enable you to do more for the College than you could via a cash donation. You do not have to pay Capital Gains Tax on any shares you give, and you can write off the full value of your gift against your tax liability in the year when you give the shares. For more information, contact the Development Office, or visit:   www.univ.ox.ac.uk/content/tax-efficient-giving

LEGACY GIVING There are a variety of types of legacy that can be left to Univ, including residuary and pecuniary legacies, and gifts-in-kind. For more information, visit www.univ.ox.ac.uk/legacies

*Qualifies for membership of the 1249 Society if aged 30 or above (only £124.90 per annum required if under 30)

TAX-EFFICIENT GIVING

TAX BENEFITS

MAKING A MAJOR GIFT

From Abroad There are ways for you to give to Univ tax-efficiently in Europe, Asia, North America and Australia. Please contact the Development Office for more details, or visit:  www.univ.ox.ac.uk/giving-overseas for details.

Higher rate tax payers can claim back the difference between the higher rates of tax of 40 or 45 per cent and the basic rate of tax at 20 per cent on the total value of their gross donation.
