Founded in 1797, Hartwick College is a nationally-known, four-year private liberal arts and sciences college in Oneonta, N.Y. with a mission that is globally oriented:

Located on a beautiful 425-acre campus in the northern foothills of the Catskill Mountains, Hartwick’s campus is built into the side of Oyaron Hill and has a breathtaking view of the Susquehanna River Valley. The College also has a 100+ acre environmental campus just eight miles from its main campus.

The programs of Hartwick College are built on three values:

• A college of the liberal arts and sciences, focusing on the development of the disciplines of thinking, learning, analyzing, communicating, and values-based judgment, enhanced through experience of international study, research, leadership, and internships;

• A relationship college, focusing on the development of a 24-7, residential educational experience characterized by personal responsibility and collaborative relationships among faculty, students, and staff; and

• A future-oriented college, focusing on educating people in ways that will make them effective and contributing citizens of the world well prepared for “the inevitable unknown.”

Hartwick’s nearly 1,200 undergraduate students come from 19 states and 20 countries; 40% male, 60% female; 22% ALANA (African-American, Latino, Asian-American, and Native American); 3% international; and 78% from New York State. Hartwick students travel the world from Italy to India for January Term, semester-long, or year-long programs. Approximately 55% of students study abroad during their undergraduate years and Hartwick is consistently ranked in the Top 15 of liberal arts colleges nationwide in the percentage of students who study abroad.

Hartwick’s expansive Liberal Arts in Practice curriculum merges traditional liberal arts study, personalized teaching, experiential learning, and the immersive experience of a separate environmental campus. Through a range of off-campus internships, collaborative research, faculty-led study abroad opportunities, and a January Term that provides global

Program, 27 major areas of study can lead to a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) or Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree. The College initiated six new undergraduate majors (several of which are interdisciplinary) in the fall of 2017 and expects to offer its first masters’ program to enrollment in the fall of 2019. Students may also choose to design their own major, under the direction of faculty, using the Individual Student Program (ISP). Hartwick’s student-faculty ratio is 11-1.

Hartwick’s 176 faculty members are specialists in their fields, great teachers, and active scholars. Enthusiastic collaborators, they engage undergraduates in advanced work. The faculty are highly respected nationally as leaders in their disciplines and they have received grants to support their scholarly work and professional goals from such distinguished organizations as the National Science Foundation, Guggenheim Foundation, and then National Endowment for the Humanities.

Diversity is an important aspect of the curriculum at Hartwick College. Students can minor in three programs that are designed specifically to encourage the study of diversity, and various additional courses of study that contribute to the understanding of and appreciation for diversity are offered.

The U.S. Pluralism Center is an important College program that promotes an understanding of diversity. The Center includes the Abraham Lincoln and Freedom Journey Exhibit (a United States Colored Troops Civil War database) and a collection of African American historic images pertaining to the Abolition Movement, local Underground Railroad, and the Civil War.

Hartwick is committed to the simultaneous celebration of ethnicity and community. Each citizen of the campus is encouraged to understand differences in thinking, life experiences, and world views while affirming the central importance of commonality and shared needs. This commitment is reflected as a primary principle of student life and the curriculum.

The nearby Pine Lake Environmental Campus provides opportunities for students to conduct biological and environmental research, design and build ecologically sound buildings, undertake archaeological research, pursue their art in a natural setting, and much more. As a complement to their academic experience at Pine Lake, up to 35 students may live there and experience a unique college housing option. Hartwick also offers high and low ropes challenge education facilities at this site.

President Dr. Margaret L. Drugovich, who took office on July 1, 2008, has strengthened the College since her arrival. She has done this:

• through careful fiscal discipline and stewardship of the College’s assets;

• with innovations such as the development of the Three-Year Degree Program, the Center for Craft Food & Beverage, and the Center for Collaboration & Innovation Makerspace;

• through planning initiatives that include clarifying and reaffirming the College’s mission, the development of a master facilities plan, and a series of related planning initiatives that have helped to identify the College’s strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities;

• through the successful completion of the largest comprehensive fundraising campaign in the College’s history;

• by convening the Leadership Group in 2013 – a planning group of faculty, staff, students, and former trustees – to consider new directions for Hartwick as a means of better differentiating it in the marketplace and positioning the College for its future;

• by initiating Hartwick225: Students First in spring 2017. A cross-institutional planning effort, Hartwick225 will result in a plan for practical next steps to support institutional progress in key areas over the next five years, leading to the College’s 225th anniversary in 2022. This plan will help the College more fully realize its educational mission and assure even greater levels of institutional and student success.

Throughout its more than 200 years, Hartwick has produced engaged, active alumni who fondly remember their experiences as students, and have built successful careers on that foundation. Today, the alumni body numbers almost 18,000 around the world. About half of them reside in the mid-Atlantic region of the United States, with another quarter in New England. Hartwick supports alumni networks in the major metropolitan areas. The most common professional fields among Hartwick alumni are management, education, healthcare, marketing/sales, and science/technology.

Hartwick College is often recognized by a variety of sources including Forbes Magazine, the Princeton Review and Wall Street Journal/Times Higher Education. Recently, in the 2017 edition of its “Best Colleges” guide, U.S. News & World Report once again ranked Hartwick College among the country’s Best National Liberal Arts Colleges. Hartwick was also cited as a top liberal arts college for “Campus Ethnic Diversity” and “Economic Diversity.”

Hartwick’s vibrant and inclusive campus life features a diverse roster of clubs, organizations, and events designed to sustain students as scholars while offering various leadership, service, and engagement opportunities. Athletically, Hartwick’s 15 teams, known as the Hawks, compete at the NCAA Division III level as a member of the Empire 8 Conference.
