2018-2019 Foundation Board of Directors

Each fall as work begins on the President’s Report and Honor Roll of Donors and I review the institutional highlights of the past fiscal year, I am so proud of the accomplishments of our students, faculty, staff, and alumni. On the follow-ing pages, we take the opportunity to celebrate all of Shepherd’s progress and accomplishments for the 2018-2019 academic year, many of which we could not achieve without you—our loyal alumni and friends It is your generosity, not with just your financial support of Shepherd, but with your time and talents that makes me prouder still. So many of you give self-lessly by volunteering on committees and serving on our institutional boards. It is your volunteer spirit and commitment to Shepherd that makes the insti-tution so strong and vibrant. I am gratified to see that so many donors have the ubiquitous two digit num-ber after their names that identify them as alumni. And some have enjoyed their Shepherd experience so much that they have two or more class years after their names! Regardless of when alumni attended Shepherd, we all have a shared experience—we may have eaten in the Ram’s Den, taken a class in Knutti Hall, or watched a game in Ram Stadium or its predecessor, Fairfax Field. Whether we studied in Scar-borough Library or the library in Knutti Hall, that shared experience of a strong Shepherd education is a signifi-cant reason our alumni are devoted to their alma mater. Their success is Shepherd’s success. Shepherd’s old motto “Shepherd Students Succeed” is just as relevant today! Thank you for your investment in our future.

the women’s giving circle has awarded a total $475,500 in grants to

regional nonprofits and Shepherd University learning projects. In May

2019, WISH celebrated five years of high impact grant giving with

an anniversary reception featuring presentations from its members,

progress updates from the 2018 grant recipients, and a keynote

address from Rebecca Powers, who founded the women’s giving circle

Impact Austin in Austin, Texas. To learn more about WISH and its work,

LEFT: For Mitchell Arthur ’21, a historic preservation major from

Fredericksburg, Virginia, the financial worries associated with

attending college were a family affair. As a recipient of the G.D.

Bragaw Scholarship in Memory of Robert A. and Joan Lux, that

burden was lessened. “My family was faced with the prospect of

funding college not only for me, but also for my sister and identical

twin brother,” said Mitchell. “My scholarship was a great benefit.”

Designated for history or political science and global study majors,

the G.D. Bragaw Scholarship in Memory of Robert A. and Joan Lux

was initially established by Bo Bragaw ’79 in memory of his grandfa-

ther. When Bo’s grandmother died in 2005, her name was added to

the award. Bo was a political science major at Shepherd.

Hanrahan (l.) the opportunity to visit with fellow faculty member Dr. Larry

Daily and his guest, Sandra Sheehan. Heidi is a member of the Shepherd

University Foundation’s board of directors and was named 2018 Professor

Larry previously established the Jonathan P. Daily Endowed Scholarship

was created in tribute to Larry’s son, a promising young mathematician who

tragically passed away in 2011 at the age of 24. In 2009, Jonathan received

his bachelor’s degree in applied mathematics with a minor in biology from

George Mason University and utilized these degrees modeling insect popu-

lations in streams at the Leetown Science Center. At the time of his death,

he had been published in the Journal of Ecology in addition to success-

fully questioning a methodology in his field at a professional conference. “I

feel like Jonathan was well on his way to creating a legacy and part of my

motivation in establishing this fund was to do that for him,” said Larry, who

recently joined the McMurran Society, a special group of donors who have

chosen to share their lifelong financial achievements through estate and

other planned gifts.

RIGHT: In 2017, Argos USA emerged as a new program sponsor

of the Scarborough Society’s annual fundraising gala. Since then,

the Martinsburg-based cement plant has expanded its support

of Shepherd University to include multiple programs and affinity

groups. Over the past year, Argos has contributed to the Scar-

borough Society, President’s Club, Last Dollar Fund, Paul Saab

Memorial Lab, Men’s Golf Team, and the annual Alumni Golf

Tournament.

Established in 1864 as Standard Lime, the company has been alter-

nately known as Martin Marietta, Capital Cement, Essroc, and now

Argos USA. With U.S. headquarters in Atlanta Georgia, and inter-

national headquarters in Columbia, South America, it is the fourth

largest producer of cement in the United States. The Martinsburg

facility produces more than two million metric tons annually of high

quality performance-specific cements. With six cement plants and

numerous ready-mix facilities in operation across the continental

United States, Argos employs 150 people in Martinsburg and more

than 3,000 nationwide.

“Giving back to our communities and promoting education builds a

strong sense of community and provides Argos with the sustainabil-

ity on which the company is founded,” said C.D. Linton ’94, regional

manager of human resources for Argos USA. “We are proud to be

a business partner with Shepherd University and look forward to

many years building and cultivating that relationship.”

Joseph P. M cMurran SocietyThe Joseph P. McMurran Society was established to honor those individuals who wish to provide for the future of Shepherd Uni-versity with a planned gift or bequest. The McMurran Society provides recognition of donors who have made such plans and hosts events to honor the Society members as well as keep them informed about the progress Shepherd University is making and its plans

for the future. The McMurran Society bears the name of Joseph P. McMurran, Shepherd’s first principal (president), who served from 1871 to 1882. This list includes all living members during the 2018-2019 year.

LEFT: The Shepherd University Foundation welcomed an unprec-

edented 18 new members into its Joseph P. McMurran Society at the

organization’s annual dinner reception on May 4, 2019. Among them

was Dennis “Denny” Barron ’73 (r.), pictured with Shepherd Uni-

versity Foundation president Christopher Colbert ’95 at the event.

In July 2018, Denny created a general education scholarship for

Jefferson County students. “I just want to help deserving students

offset the costs associated with higher education,” he said of the

deferred gift, established through the transfer of ownership of a life

insurance policy to the Shepherd University Foundation, enabling

Denny to make fully tax-deductible payments to the Foundation

to cover the cost of the premiums. The gift is the first of its kind for

the Foundation and demonstrates how planned giving may take on

many forms. Sam

sity’s campus. Sponsored by the Shepherd University Foundation in conjunction with the Shepherd

University Art Department, the event featured the work of recent Shepherd graduate Alyssa Imes ’18,

whose sculpture of a monarch butterfly was previously on display in the gardens of historic Popodicon.

Alyssa conducted the pour with her self-made furnace, Phylus. Participants were invited to craft indi-

vidual pieces based on personal inspirations. They received a tutorial showing how to create a scratch

block mold of their chosen pattern, which in turn was used to create a metal keepsake made from iron

poured on-site. Cindy Calhoun ’95, pictured here prepping her mold, chose to create a turtle. The Metal

Pour and Art Exhibit marked the 12th marquee event for Women for Shepherd University. Kay Dartt,

3-D Fabrication manager for the FASTEnER Lab, summarized the experience, saying, “It was a great

time bringing students, alumni, the campus, and community together to make art.” Julia

RIGHT: Carl K. Rauch '58 didn’t know Adam Weaver, yet he knew that his planned gift would enable

countless students like Adam to pursue a higher education. Professor Rauch achieved a lifetime of

accomplishments as a scholar, professor, and philanthropist. A former math professor at Shepherd,

Carl’s legacy at the university includes the creation of several student scholarships established across

multiple disciplines. Although Carl passed away in 2011, his philanthropic spirit lives on through the

students aided by these awards; Adam Weaver of Martinsburg is just one of those students. A junior

majoring in business administration, Adam is a recipient of the Carl K. Rauch and Susan Besaw Rauch

Endowed Scholarship for Business. Created through a bequest, the award honors Carl’s former wife, who

is a retired assistant professor of accounting at Shippensburg University. In establishing his endowed

gifts, Carl stated, “My satisfaction lies in knowing that I will be helping future generations attend this

wonderful school.” He would be satisfied indeed to know that upon receiving his award, Adam stated,

“It’s an honor to receive this scholarship as I am now able to earn a quality education that will benefit my

future.”

LEFT: In November 2018, the Shepherd community suffered the loss of a great friend to the

university. Sandra Jenkins moved to Shepherdstown in 2005 following her retirement from

a career in public service that was inspired by the women's movement of the 1970s and her

own perception of new opportunities. As a practicing attorney in the public sector, she was

a staunch advocate of women’s rights. In 1973, while working at the Maritime Administra-

tion where she spent the balance of her career, she recruited the first class of women to be

admitted to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point. All eight female recruits went

on to graduate from the Academy, and in 1974, following the Kings Point success, Congress

opened all military academies by statute. Sandy also worked alongside notable activists like

Betty Friedan and Ellie Smeal while serving on the board of the National Organization for

Women’s Legal Defense and Education Fund. The group served as the lead advocate for the

federal civil rights law Title IX, which passed in June 1972.

Sandy resided in Shepherdstown with her partner and spouse, Mary Bell, a retired civilian

attorney for the Department of Navy. Both women were charter members of WISH (Women

Investing in Shepherd University) and are pictured here at the organization’s 2017 member-

ship reception. Sandy also served on the WISH Grants Committee and was an active member

of the Shepherdstown community in general. She and Mary attended Shepherdstown Pres-

byterian Church, where they were married in 2018. Bre

Maggie Drennen, who was respected and

admired as a strong woman who supported

many worthy organizations. Together

with her husband, the late Judge William

Drennen, she developed The Club at Cress

Creek with the assistance of their daughter

ABOVE: Dr. Geri Crawley-Woods, professor of social work, was the third recipient of the Mentzer Award for Inspirational Teaching (MAIT)

when it was announced during Shepherd’s 71st Annual Student Recognition Day on April 23, 2019. The MAIT was created by Shepherd

alumna Susan Mentzer-Blair ’72 (second from r.) and her husband, William “Bill” Blair (r.), to honor a full-time professor recognized by

Shepherd students for being particularly inspiring and having a profound effect on his or her students. Sue’s brother, Dr. John Thomas “Tom”

Mentzer, served as inspiration for the award. Tom received a similar accolade from his Ph.D. candidate students at the University of Tennessee

in Knoxville, where he held the Bruce Chair of Excellence in the business department. The MAIT honors Sue’s brother, who passed away in

2010, as well as her mother, who died in 2014. A portion of each of their estates was used to create this unique recognition. Sue is a retired

school counselor with Frederick County Public Schools in Maryland and also serves as a director emerita on the Foundation’s board of direc-

tors. Bill Blair is also a retired educator, having taught history and worked as a school counselor with Jefferson County Public Schools in West

Virginia.

Dr. Crawley-Woods was nominated by Osmund Anderson (l.), a social work major from Charles Town. Previous MAIT recipients include Dr.

Timothy Nixon, associate professor of English, and Dr. Stephanie Slocum-Schaffer, associate professor of political science.

LEFT: William Edward Moler ’65, known to all as Ned, will be remembered with respect and appreciation by

the generations of Shepherd students who receive his scholarship awards, including recent Shepherd alumna

Nnebuefe Idegwu ’19 of Hagerstown, Maryland. After he retired from a successful career with IBM, this remarkable

alumnus chose to leave his entire estate to the Shepherd University Foundation to endow the William E. “Ned”

Moler Scholarship. Each year into perpetuity, his generosity will provide numerous general academic awards to

deserving Shepherd students, influencing the lives of untold scholars who will carry his legacy into the future.

Nnebuefe used funds from her scholarship award to help pay her tuition. “This means a lot to me because my

education has helped me grow and become the person I want to be,” she said.

LEFT: As a pre-med biology major, recent

Shepherd graduate Daniel Hussion ’19

of Charles Town has high hopes for the

future. The Captain Charles N.G. and Jessie

Hendrix Memorial Scholarship helped him

work toward his goals as a student. “This

scholarship gave me the opportunity to

continue my education and chase my

dreams without putting a financial burden

on my family or me,” he said.

Designated for pre-medicine students

or those in related fields of research, the

Captain Charles N.G. and Jessie Hendrix

Memorial Scholarship was established by

Shepherd University President Mary J.C.

Hendrix ’74 in memory of her parents.

Capt. Charles N.G. Hendrix served with

distinction at the United States Naval

Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, and as a

tribute, the Hendrix Oceanography Labo-

ratory was built at the academy. Jessie

Hendrix was a dear friend of Shepherd

University and the Shepherd University

Foundation, where she worked as adminis-

trative assistant to the late Dr. James Moler

’30 in the organization’s early years. She

later served as secretary on its board of

directors for almost 30 years.

Where there’s a WILL, there’s a way. Everyone needs a legal will, yet too often we put off the process of

making one year after year. Why not make this the year to get your

plans in order?

Through a new partnership with FreeWill, the Shepherd University Foundation is pleased to offer alumni and friends free access to an

online platform where users may create a will in less than 25 minutes.

Take advantage of this free resource at freewill.com/shepherd and

support the people and causes you care about most. Though it’s

not a requirement, your choice to include a gift to Shepherd in your

estate plans will have a lasting impact on the university and its

students, programs, and faculty.
