President Mary J.C. Hendrix ’74

The hundreds of alumni and friends of Shepherd Uni-versity listed in this annual report are a testament to the devotion and pride that we all feel toward this re-markable university. You believe strongly in Shepherd University, as do I. Your generosity provides much needed scholarship support for deserving students, as well as faculty and academic program support. Your financial investment allows our academic programs to thrive and shine. A wonderful example of alumni and community mem-bers stepping up in support of Shepherd is the Business 2020 committee that began raising funds earlier this year to establish a much needed School of Business. In the group’s initial meeting, many of the committee members wrote checks or made pledges to establish a School of Business, an initiative to restore Shepherd’s business administration program to preeminence as we train the next generation of business leaders. It is this sort of belief in Shepherd University that allows us to move forward, even during these times of declining state bud-get support (Shepherd receives just 15 percent of its budget from the state). This year, the Shepherd University Foundation has taken on a larger role by partnering with the university to build a new resi-dence hall on West Campus, which our students named Potomac Place. This is an excellent example of the public-private re-lationships we are developing to advance our university —by thinking creatively about ways to accomplish institutional goals. With your continuing support—both financial and volunteer—we can make the university that we all love the best in the state as we train the next generation of leaders and model citizens. I thank you sincerely for your vital support. Mary J.C. Hendrix ’74President

Left: Alumnus Joe Walter ’66 was inducted into the Emeritus Club in 2016, 50 years after graduating from Shepherd with a degree in secondary education. Now retired from a career with Jefferson County Public Schools, Joe is a member of the Shepherd University Alumni Association (SUAA) and the Ram Gridiron Club. “Joe is a big booster of Shepherd’s football program and has been for many years,” said fellow alumnus Al Lueck ’67, who founded the Ram Gridiron Club. “He’s always been suppor tive of our football team.” Joe is pictured here with Alexis Reed ’06 and ’13 M.B.A., director of alumni affairs, at the Emeritus Club Luncheon and Induction Ceremony on May 5. The annual event, held each year on Commencement weekend, honors Shepherd alumni who graduated 50 or more years ago. The Emeritus Club is a constituency organization of the Shepherd University Alumni Association, created to encourage the continuing involvement and engagement of alumni through friendship and fellowship to strengthen ties with the university.

Left: This spring, the Women for Shepherd University continued their mission to create a sense of community for women to connect and build relationships by hosting a backyard tea par ty and gardening demonstration held at the historic Entler Hotel in Shepherdstown. Guests enjoyed “Tea and Liber ty,” a presentation by Master Gardener Carol Anderson on the historic usage of herbs in beverage-making, including a look at how the American Revolution affected the consumption of tea and herbal infusions in America. Sponsored by the Shepherd University Foundation, Women for Shepherd University is a network of alumnae, faculty, and friends connecting with one another for personal and professional growth. These leaders, by power of their example, suppor t, foster, and promote the advancement of women and women’s issues within Shepherd University, the community, and in their own lives. The organization holds two events each year. Par ticipants in these women-centered programs learn firsthand about all that Shepherd University has to offer, as well as the positive impact volunteer leadership can have. To learn more about Women for Shepherd University or joining its planning committee, visit www.shepherduniversityfoundation.org and click on “Get Involved.”

Above: In recognition of the 20th anniversary of its summer internship program, DMI Mobile Enterprise Solutions, one of the companies contracted by the United States Coast Guard Operation Systems (OSC) in Kearneysville, made a generous gift to Shepherd University to suppor t its annual robotics competition, ShepRoboFest. John McDermott, DMI vice president and contract program manager at the OSC, and Enrico Caruso (r.), DMI project manager, presented the $5,000 check to Will Richards, Shepherd Robotics Club president, on May 13, 2016. “Shepherd University has been one of OSC’s principal recruiting sources for bright, young, and technically inclined students who have demonstrated excellent achievements in our work environment,” Caruso said. “Having realized these benefits, DMI management felt it fitting to celebrate this 20th anniversary of our summer internship program with a gesture of our appreciation to our longest academic par tner—Shepherd University.”

Right: Hannah Williams ’16, of Bunker Hill, majored in biology with a focus on pre-optometry and was a recipient of the Elsie Brown and Joseph J. Renn Memorial Scholarship. The award was established through the Shepherd University Foundation by Shepherd alumnus Joseph J. Renn III ’60, M.D., in honor of his parents. Elsie Renn graduated from Shepherd in 1923. “The Renn Scholarship was a blessing during my last year at Shepherd because it provided enough funding to take care of my remaining tuition costs,” said Hannah. “This year I was accepted into optometry school, so I am now able to save my money for my postgraduate education.” Hannah was featured in the December 2015 issue of Journal of Visualized Experiments (JoVE), an online peer-reviewed scientific video journal. In the feature, Hannah and Dr. Carol Plautz, an associate biology professor at Shepherd, performed experiments for the camera on immature frog eggs, called oocytes. Sa

Above: During Shepherd University’s 2016 Student Recognition Day, held on April 19, the daughters of former Shepherd President Oliver S. Ikenberry honored one female and one male student who have exemplified an outstanding record of academic achievement, leadership, and a high level of volunteer service to the university and surrounding com-munity. Jane Ikenberry-Dorrier ’65 (l.) and Margaret Elizabeth (Betty) Ikenberry Wade ’58 (r.) presented the Oliver Ikenberry Award for Human Service to Brianna Shuman ’16, a sociology major from Mt. Airy, Maryland, and Graham Scott ’16, a political science major from Buckhannon. Graham is also a Foundation scholar, having received the James S. Hafer Memorial Scholarship in his junior year. More recently, he was selected by Shepherd’s politi-cal science faculty to par ticipate in the university’s Canadian Parliament Internship Program, funded through the Foundation by Dr. Mark Curley. The award allowed Graham to travel to Ottawa, Ontario during his 2015 summer recess to par ticipate in the workings of a parliamentary form of government. The Ikenberry family established the award in tribute to their father. The family also established the Margaret Ikenberry Memorial Fund for Popodicon Garden in homage to their late mother. Additionally, Jane Ikenberry-Dorrier serves as a director emerita on the Shepherd University Foundation Board of Directors.

31. President’s Report and Honor Roll of Donors 2015-16

Left: It’s a classic love story: Glenn ’52 and Peggy ’61 Welsh met as students at Shepherd, married in 1951, and went on to spend the next 64 years of their lives together on their beloved family farm in the Swan Pond Greensburg area of Berkeley County. As alumni, they actively suppor ted the university’s football team and rarely missed a game for more than 50 years. In 2005, they created the Glenn W. and Margaret R. Welsh Scholarship, a deferred general academic award established through the Shepherd University Foundation that enabled them to join the Joseph P. McMurran Society. The gift highlights the couple’s civic-mindedness and ensures their legacy at Shepherd as deserving students will benefit from their generosity into perpetuity. On November 10, 2015, Glenn Welsh passed away. A retired farmer, orchardist, and real estate developer, the WWII veteran was a lifelong member of Greensburg United Methodist Church and an active member of his community. In addi-tion to serving on the Chamber of Commerce, he was a Paul Harris member of the Mar tinsburg Rotary club, a 32 degree Mason and Shriner, and the recipient of several awards for his work in the community. Above all, Glenn was a beloved member of the Shepherd family, one whose presence is missed by many in the campus community.

Members of the President’s Club have been instrumental in providing the resources necessary to advance Shepherd’s strategic priorities and help raise the university’s profile through outstanding programs and academics.

President’s Club donors help ensure the future of Shepherd University through annual unrestricted gifts of $1,000 or more. The uncommon commitment shown by alumni, friends, faculty, staff, executive leadership, and board members demonstrates the true passion and pride that so many feel for Shepherd. We are proud to recognize the donors listed as members of the President’s Club who added strength to Shepherd’s mission and positively impacted students, faculty, and staff through their philanthropy during the 2016 fiscal year.

Right: During his time at Shepherd, Ferris Sinnas ’16, an environmental studies major from Falls Church, Virginia, was an active par ticipant in the various recognition events sponsored by the Shepherd University Foundation for its many deserv-ing scholars. Ferris was the recipient of the Florence and Velma Shaw Leadership Scholarship, a general academic award created to promote high standards of leadership in campus residence halls. Awarded to resident assistants at Shepherd who demonstrate qualities of citizenship that enhance residence life, the en-dowed fund was established through a bequest by former education professor Florence Shaw to honor both her and her sister’s service to Shepherd. As supervisor of Shepherd’s observation and teacher-training program, Florence Shaw wished to create a project that would give student teachers a hands-on oppor tunity to practice instruction with real pupils. Over the summers of 1928 and 1929, she gathered local children to take par t in the building of what originally was to be a small garden on Shepherd’s campus; however, at the encouragement of President W.H.S. White, the project took on new shape and evolved into what is now known as the Little House on Princess Street.

Left: Zulfiya Muradova, a senior mathematics major from Hagerstown, Maryland, was the 2015-16 recipient of the Jonathan P. Daily Endowed Scholarship. Designated for applied mathematics students, the Jonathan P. Daily Scholarship was estab-lished by Dr. Larry Z. Daily, associate professor of psychology, in memory of his son following his untimely passing in 2011. Jonathan utilized his own applied mathematics degree from George Mason University in his job at the Leetown Science Center, where he modeled insect populations in local streams. By the age of 24, he had already been published in the Jour-nal of Ecology, as well as successfully questioned a methodology in his field at several professional conferences. His father felt Jonathan was well on his way to creating his own legacy in the field of applied mathematics, and created this award to perpetuate that legacy, a sentiment that is not lost on Zulfiya. “I am honored and delighted to receive the Jonathan Paul Daily scholarship,” she said. “I feel beyond grateful that there are people who are encouraging my studies in mathematics. This encouragement continues to motivate me to overcome challenges and become a more determined student.”

WISH: Women Investing in Shepherd Women Investing in Shepherd (WISH) was created in 2014 to inspire, educate, and develop the amazing potential of women’s philanthropy. WISH was formed as a philanthropic subsidiary of Women for Shepherd University and is sponsored by the Shepherd University Foundation. The gifts from this women’s giving circle fund high-impact grants to Shepherd University learning programs and the tri-state nonprofit community. WISH affects positive changes, brings new funding resources, and makes philanthropy accessible. Shepherd University celebrates these outstanding women who chose to become members of this unique and significant philan-thropic circle. The members listed here made their gift during the 2015 calendar year. Special thanks to Mary “Peachy” Staley ’70, Liz Oates, Carolyn Fleenor ’78, and Bev Hughes ’71 for their outstanding leadership and dedication to WISH. Excellence • Innovation • Opportunity: Training the Next Generation of Leaders and Model Citizens

With the inauguration of President Mary J.C. Hendrix ’74, Shepherd Univer-sity has entered a period of transformation and growth. As the first Shepherd graduate to serve as president of the university, President Hendrix is proud

to return home to lead our remarkable institution of higher learning as it advances the frontiers of excellence, innovation, and opportunity. Our students commit themselves academically and emotionally to Shepherd Uni-versity at a critical coming-of-age, placing in us their hope and trust for a brighter future. And so it is during this evolutionary phase that we ask our alumni and friends to do the same—to recommit to the future of Shepherd University as we train the next generation of bright young minds. Private gifts through the Shepherd University Foundation are crucial in funding student scholarships, academic programs, and faculty awards to underwrite vital research and technology that will inspire and sustain innovative curriculum. With your support, we can truly transform the student experience and inspire our faculty to new heights of academic excellence.

Your gift will make a difference! If you would like to support Shepherd University with a private gift, please visit us at www.shepherduniversityfoundation.org.
