With this in mind, Bill Overmyer ’46 and Bill Arthur ’46, who were best friends since the 30s and part of the FABOMAS (details later in issue), passed away within a month of each other. They had a 90+-year friendship. Both had successful careers, great families and loving wives. The two Bills were Rook Brothers and Bobcats through and through and they will be missed. Not many schools or communities have this special relationship. I am so glad we do! Later this summer, I have the opportunity to see the progress of our high school remodeling and plan a write-up and photos in the next issue. At the end of May, I had the privilege to visit the kindergarten build- ing before it was demolished. It was sad to see it come down as I was part of the first class (1950-51) to at- tend this unique school designed specifically for five- and six-year-old students. Dear Fellow Bobcats:

Thank you for your continuing support by sending in your annual dues and espe-cially to the many GHHSAA LIFE members, including our newest donors, for their generosity. The full list of living LIFE members is included in this issue.

Two of my classmates came in from California and Florida over the July 4 week-end. With very little notice, we had a Class of ’63 mini-reunion with a lunch for about 16 and dinner the next evening at the Knotty Pine. On a Roll to End CancerGrandview Heights, our prideful community, celebrates a sense of tradition and commitment to ex-cellence by helping out where we can. Several alumni have joined together as Team Grandview to participate in Pelotonia, a two-day bike ride in Columbus, Ohio, to raise funds for cancer research at The Ohio State University Com-prehensive Cancer Center – The James. Team Grandview believes in the mission to support one another while striving for this goal by training together and enjoying each other’s company through social events.

“I joined the Grandview Peloto-nia team initially to support my friend and neighbor, Team Cap-tain Heidi Card,” said second-year rider Maria Mesi Cantelmo ‘91. “As a team, as a community, we ride together for the common goal of finding a cure for cancer. Riding with Team Grandview has really fostered a sense of personal and community gratification.”

The Grandview Pelotonia team consists of 50 riders, including GHHS alumni Julie Wilkes ‘94, Maria Mesi Cantelmo ’91, Izzy Evans ’20, Jennifer Marcellana ’91, Rosemary Post Keye ‘10, Katie Casasanta Mehling ‘08, Kai Iisaka ’21, and Gus Soteriades ‘91.

Hundreds of Pelotons – big and small – have made up the majority of the Pelotonia com-munity since its inception and have raised millions for cancer research. To support Team Grand-view, learn more and donate at https://www.pelotonia.org/pelo-ton/a0s3t00000BKXRmAAP

Kay Williams ‘51Butcher of Dreams, my screen-play adapted from my thriller, won Honorable Mention in the 2022 Spring Big Apple Screen-play Competition.

Joan Smith Klitch ‘52 Joan passed away on May 28, surrounded by her children Jenny Klitch ‘73, Jodi (Klitch) Bricker ‘86, and Tim ‘79 and Barbara Klitch. Joan was a graduate Miami University (1955), and OSU Law (1979). She spent most of her wonderful 88 years in Grand-view/Marble Cliff where she and husband Richard (d.2021, married for 65+ years) raised their family. Joan grew up in Grandview on Haines Avenue with three broth-ers in a home filled with music, cards, sports, books, and church. Joan had a special fondness for her brother Terry Smith, and in the 1950s closely followed her two professional-athlete broth-ers, Ed Smith (basketball) and Gene Smith (baseball). Joan was active in the PTA, GHHS School Board, and served as Marble Cliff Clerk-Treasurer. She was a bridge Life Master, and helped her par-ents, Helen and Bryan Smith, at the Smith Bridge Studio on First Avenue. She was the mastermind behind husband Dick’s tennis successes at numerous Columbus facilities, including the Northam Park Tennis Courts in Upper Arlington. She frequently stated how lucky she was and that she had an amazing life. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of her family

and the many people whose lives she touched with a kind word or deed. Roger Shaffer ‘64Thanks for all you do. It’s so great to stay connected with fellow alumni.

Barbara Radabaugh ‘65 I took this picture at our Senior All-Night at Wittenberg Uni-versity. We looked like we were dressed for a dance. We bowled, played pool, and had to walk be-tween buildings with a partner! I love these women. I can honestly say almost all of these women were good friends of mine. Sadly, Diane Jones and Debbie Struck have passed away, but I have precious memories of their sweet selves. As everyone reading this knows, Grandview was the best place to grow up and attend school. I think the Class of 1965 might still be the largest gradu-ating class ever at 150 graduates.

The Past Meets the Future By Jim Anderson ‘72

On May 4-6, 2022, I had the privilege of being a tour director for the GHHS Class of 2026’s Washington, DC, trip. This was trip #65 out of 69 I made since starting in the spring of 2015.

I first served as a middle school Washington, DC, trip chaper-one when I was a sixth-grade teacher at Mount Gilead Middle School. Now, being a tour direc-tor for Prodigy Student Travel has been the perfect retirement job, allowing me to share the history, memorials, museums, government buildings, Arling-ton National Cemetery, and many other sights of Wash-ington, DC, with eighth-grade students from across Ohio.

One of my favorite places to visit is George Washington’s Mt. Ver-non, imagining all of the famous historical figures who visited the Washingtons. Many trips also make a stop at Gettysburg National Battlefield, which the Class of 2026 did with a step-on guide from Gettysburg for a two-hour tour of the battlefield.

What made the Grandview Heights trip special for me was that this was the last class to attend eighth grade in the same building I had, then known as the Grandview Heights Junior

High School. The old building has not seen many changes over the years and will soon be torn down as the middle school students move to their new building this school year. I was able to share stories with the students about my time there and hear theirs. One change I learned was they no longer had one set of stairs for going up and another for going down. Other memories were open lunches so we could go to the store around the corner for candy, going to the high school for physical education classes, and being with the same class-mates for every class.

Another special note for this trip was that the Class of 2026 students wrote letters to James Dallas Smith ‘66, to be delivered as part of the “mail call” on his Honor Flight, taken in October 2021. After seeing the various war and military memorials, the importance of Honor Flights took on a more special meaning for the students. The thank-you letter that Dallas wrote back to the students was read to them on the trip home, with the thoughts of all they had seen fresh in their minds. It was a very moving mo-ment during the trip.

The students and I also enjoyed a wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier after watching the changing of the guard.

To the students of GHMS, I want to take this opportunity not only to thank you for the letters,

but also tell you a little about my Honor Flight.

On the morning of October 21, 2021, Honor Flight #109 departed

John Glenn International Airport at 7:00am. We soon landed in Reagan

National Airport and from there we le for e Mall.

As I experienced the Vietnam Wall, I reminisced on my 2 years in the

Army. I’ve lived in Grandview for 67 of my 73 years and graduated from

GHHS in 1966. I was 20 years old when I deployed to Vietnam with the US

Army. I earned a Purple Heart in March of 1969 when a mortar

round exploded beside me. My thoughts and memories included the

bugs, the leeches, the scorpians, the tibers, the snakes and more fondly,

my platoon buddies and our platoon monkey, Chunga. Most importantly,

I got to say good-bye to my 3 classmates whose names are on e

Wall—James Titus, Gary O’Keefe and Paul Ballard.

My favorite monument is the WWII monument. If you have the

opportunity to visit this powerful memorial, make a point of seeing the

area dedicated to “Kilroy was Here” and learn the story of Kilroy.

A er a long day on e Mall, we received our Mail Call. I had BY FAR

the biggest stack of letters of the entire ight (there were 200 of us!)!

Since returning, I’ve had a reunion with some of my buddies from

the ight and we relived our amazing day. At a GHHS Alumni Luncheon,

I had the honor of meeting Lou Ardit. Lou, a WWII veteran, went on the

Honor Flight in September 2021. He graduated from GHHS in 1938 and

will be 102 in July. I’ve thoroughly enjoyted my life in Grandview Heights and I am

forever honored and proud to have served in the United States Army.

God Bless America!

Sincerely,

James Dallas Smith

Ron Tyne, ‘67 says “I’ve had a penchant for nature my entire life. As a naturalist and now an Arkansas Master Naturalist, I’m

always amazed when I look deep into the mystery of nature. That is

when one can see the intercon-nectedness of all creation. The

deeper one looks, the more one understands. This is a watercolor

depicting the beauty in the small details of nature which often go

unseen.”

Forster Four Reunion

The four Forster siblings and spouses came from all directions to meet at Ben and Val’s vacation home in Big Canoe, Georgia, last fall. There was sightseeing, eating, talking and lots of reminiscing about the old Grandview days. Remembering the life of William E. Overmyer ‘46 By Sonya Stenulson Overmyer

Bill and I met in 1975 and married in 1981. He took me back to Grandview to visit his home-town and I met many of

his former classmates and foot-ball teammates. When I met his former Coach Thomas, he said, “You married Bill Overmyer? You must be able to run fast if you caught him!” I was with Bill when he was inducted into the 1997 GHHS Sports Hall of Fame, as well as the 2009 GHHS Distinguished Alumni Honoree. His classmates and friends (FABOMAS) and football teammates remained his closest friends throughout his life.

Grandview was important to Bill. He was Booster president and a Rook when the Brotherhood of Rooks fraternity house was purchased. He left Grandview

after graduation to serve in the U.S. Navy and then attended The Ohio State University and gradu-ated from Columbia University, New York.

Following a long career in adver-tising, he semi-retired in 1981 and we had time to pursue what we loved: travel, classical music, camping, climbing mountains, spending time with his children and our families.

Bill was a walk-up mountain climber and had already done solo treks up twelve of the 14,000’ers. On one Colorado trek to Quandary Peak (14,264 feet), he left this dedication message: “For all those of Grandview HS who are gone.”

His daughter Susannah and I were at his side when he passed at 93 years on Dec. 2, 2021, of natural causes. Predeceased by his first wife Dorothy, parents William and Rhea Overmyer and all his older brothers, Jack, Bob,

Fritz, Richard, and sister Kitson (all GHHS graduates). Bill was survived by his wife Sonya, son Scott, daughter Susannah, grand-children Paris and Roman and beloved nieces and nephews.

Bill was known for his love of words, and some said if there were four or more people gath-ered, he would get up and give a speech. He would often recite a few favorite lines of Shakespeare to his closest friends: “When to the sessions of sweet silent thought I summon up remem-brance of things past, .... But if the while I think on thee, dear friend, All losses are restor’d, and sorrows end.”

The Bobcat Boosters Organization was formed in 1943, comprised mostly of parents of students involved in GHHS athletics. Records show that membership in March 1944 was up to 169 members. By 1946, the club was incorporated as The Bobcat Boosters, Inc. In October 1956, the Boosters sponsored an Ox Roast at Pierce Field to coincide with the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the found-ing of Grandview Heights. At that time, Pierce Field was known as Oxley Field. Tick-ets were sold for $1. In early years, the Ox Roast was a one-day event, sponsored jointly by the Bobcat Boosters and the Grandview Baseball Association. It has become a three-day annual event and a major fund raiser for the Bobcat Boosters. The fires are traditionally lit by the football team captains after the first game of the year. This photo from the 1968 Highlander shows co-captains Dave Evans and Joe Kurelic lighting the fire in the pit. Recognize anyone else?

I plan to attend The Ohio State University in the fall and pursue a major in English, with a minor in Spanish.

GHHSAA Trustees Increase Scholarship Amounts Due to rising education costs, the GHHSAA Trustees voted to increase the dollar amounts of scholarships to be awarded.

Five scholarships were awarded in 2022 for $3,000 each, in addi-tion to those awarded through the Legacy Society and the Brotherhood of Rooks. For 2023, scholarships will be increased

to $5,000 each with a minimum of three awarded through the GHHSAA. Additional scholar-ships will be considered based on the results of fundraising efforts.

Endowed scholarships through the Legacy Society will remain unchanged by this

action. All current Legacy Society scholarships range from between $1,000 and $2,500per recipient.

The Brotherhood of Rooks are increased their scholarship amount from $1,500 to $2,000,with a minimum of two to be awarded in 2023.

Contributing to the GHHSAAYou are the GHHSAA. Without membership support, the GHHSAA would not and could not exist. We graciously thank you for your continued generosity. Here is a breakdown of GHHSAA funding categories. All Friends of the GHHSAA are mentioned in the newsletter published nearest the time after their contribution is received. Support the GHHSAA today! Thank you!

ANNUAL DUES: Every fall, we mail an Annual Membership Request of $30. This goes to all alumni and it is our hope that each alum contributes this amount each year. This fund-ing is the “bread and butter” of our budget and is extremely important. Please watch for your envelope this fall.

LIFE MEMBERSHIP: A Lifetime membership is $300. Lifetime members still receive the annual dues request in case they want to donate additional funds. We publish the names of all LIFE Members once every 24 months. A list of LIFE Members is avail-able online at www.grand-viewheightsalumni.com.

PAWS CLUB: Contribution of $50 - $99

BIG CATS CLUB: Contribution of $100 - $499

TOP CATS CLUB: Contribution of $500 - $999

SPECIAL RECOGNITION: Con-tribution of $1,000+

IN HONOR OF: Contribution of any amount in honor of a classmate, teacher, friend. Both the donor and the honoree are mentioned in the newsletter.

IN MEMORY OF: Contribution of any amount in memory of deceased classmate, teacher, friend. Both the donor and the deceased are mentioned in the newsletter.

LEGACY SOCIETY: Member-ship in the GHHS Legacy Society requires a base contribution of $20,000 or more. The funding establishes an annual scholar-ship, of at least 5% of the depos-ited amount, in the contributor’s name or in honor of someone of their choosing. All Legacy Soci-ety contributors will be listed in every newsletter issue and are listed on the web site.

We take our fiduciary respon-sibility seriously. You can see the good work your funding accomplishes including this newsletter, alumni events, the website, support of current stu-dent activities, improvements and supplies not available in the

regular budget (Robotics, Art, Band, special requests, etc.), and scholarships, scholarships and more scholarships. Your support ensures we stay connected, and together we help continue the legacy that makes us all proud to be a Bobcat.

Make all checks payable to GHHSAA and mail to PO Box 12116 Columbus, OH 43212. Funds are managed by The Columbus Foundation.

Editor’s note: We send dues request let-ters to all alumni, just as we also send the newsletter. We hope you’ll give when you can. Donations and annual dues newsletter subscriptions are much appreciated. We couldn’t do all we do without you. Thank you for your continued and generous support.
