Abstract: The monetary system of Ptolemaic Egypt, established under King Ptolemy I, was composed of silver and bronze coins, the latter having only a fiduciary value. When he

reformed the tax system, Ptolemy II (284-246 BCE) required the payment in bronze currency of numerous taxes – part of the proceeds of which were allotted to the temples. The clergy was therefore paid in bronze coins. Given that many Egyptians were employed by the temples, they were equally paid in bronze coins, which would explain the widespread distribution of this coinage in the country. Ptolemy II’s policy thus promoted the circulation of this form of currency.

ed. by Haim Gitler

Published: Jerusalem : Israel Museum, 2012

Abstract: This richly illustrated and luxurious volume is based on one of the Israel Museum's most popular exhibits, 2012's White Gold: Revealing the World's Earliest Coins (more than 100 coins are displayed in the catalogue including 25 enlargements on double spread sheets). White Gold: Revealing the World's Earliest Coins is the first public display of an

outstanding group of five hundred miniature masterpieces from two important collections of electrum coins. The exhibition provides an intimate glimpse into the dawn of coinage, shedding light on the story of one of the most important innovations in human history. Electrum coins are not only historically significant, but also astonishingly beautiful. Reflecting a rich diversity of subjects, they trace the evolution of Greek art from the

seventh through the fourth century BC and draw us magnetically into a vibrant and

fascinating iconographic world.

Abstract: For the inhabitants of the ancient world the gods and heroes did not live in far-off

realms, but were constantly present and played a role in many aspects of everyday life.

Through the depiction of heroes and the myths connected with them the cities could display their antiquity and rank.

Abstract: When several cities use the same units of weight, this can indicate a communal

economic system and is often suggestive of political alliances. These relationships were even closer when several communities placed the same image on their coins.

Abstract: This study aims to synthesize recent research on currency in the Roman Empire during the 3rd century A.D. This period, turning point between the classical world and late

Antiquity, was marked by important social economic and cultural changes of which, currency is an excellent example. The collapse of the old trimetallic monetary system inherited from Augustus, the quasidisappeaance of monied silver metal and the primacy accorded to gold are so many facts which, added to the effects of inflation and the successive monetary reforms decided upon by the emperors, precipitated the socio-economic mutations. It seems that the monetary phenomena were major vehicle for the

transfer of wealth and facilitated the constitution an ever-more inegalitarian society.

Abstract: A total of nine countermarked coins were found in the Roman camp at Hedemünden. An investigation of the punches revealed a close relationship between the military bases

Nijmegen, Vetera 1, Haltern, Mainz, Cologne and Hedemünden, which suggests that

coins were delivered to all camps simultaneously.

Abstract: This paper describes a hoard of aes coinage from Regensdorf, which is possibly preserved in its entirety. The 106 coins preserved in the hoard date from between 330 and 348 A.D. and thus span a period of time which was not previously represented by

existing finds from Furttal. Despite this, the coin types present in the Regensdorf hoard closely resemble those found in finds from the central Rhine area.

Abstract: This paper proposes new interpretations of the origin or significance of two obverse types from the so-called Imperial Image phase of Arab-Byzantine coinage, the 'falconer' type as produced at the so-called pseudo-Damascus mint and the seated couple type as

produced initially at Scythopolis. It is argued that the originator of the 'falconer' type was primarily influenced by some antique local art-work depicting an emperor, probably

Constantius II, with a phoenix on a globe, and that the originator of the seated couple type may have intended these to represent the tychai of Scythopolis and a neighbouring city, perhaps Gerasa.

Abstract: In 2003, levelling work at an old farmstead along the Sniederspad in Zoersel revealed a large coin scatter. Near the hoard, foundation walls were encountered, believed to predate 1777; the owner of this building was probably a tenant farmer renting land from the Bosschaert family, who at the time owned large tracts of land in the region. The

hoard consists of 82 silver coins from the Southern Netherlands, France and Austria, and a number of silver pieces from the United Netherlands. The youngest date in the hoard is

1793, coinciding roughly with the renewed French occupation of the area. The fact that the hoard had been cached may well be a reference to these troubled times, and silver coins appear to have been the main selection criterion in its composition. Similar late 18th-century hoards have been found further afield, indicating a clear regional coin concentration.

Abstract: In 1991, during the renovation of his farmhouse in Retie, Karel Nietvelt made an unexpected discovery. Underneath the brick floor of a pig pen he found a pottery beaker

containing a hoard of silver coins. A numismatic study of the coins has shown that the hoard consists of twenty-three French écus dating to the late 18th century. The farmhouse where the beaker was discovered, dates to 1945. It was built on top of the foundations of an older farmhouse. Given the age of the coins and the pottery beaker, and the fact that the hoard was found in the soil underneath the floor foundation, it seems unlikely that the coins were hidden during the construction of the new building. It

is assumed that they were buried by an inhabitant of one of the farmhouse’s predecessors. Possibly this happened in the late 18th century, a period of great unrest.

Abstract: In June 2011, during road works in the centre of the village of Moorsel, a late 18th-century coin deposit was discovered (figs 1-2). It contains the standard collection of 18th-century coins that make regular appearances in deposits elsewhere in the region dating from the same period. The coins were minted in the southern Netherlands (fig. 5), Austria (fig. 6) and France (fig. 7). The most recent coin dates from 1793. The coins were found on the site of a private dwelling (figs 3-4) which had to be demolished due to

road widening in the early 20th century. Considering the location and the depth at which

the coins were found, it is thought they must have been hidden in the cellar of the demolished building. The 29 coins presumably represent the savings of a modestly well-off person or family. The fact that the coins were hidden may be linked to the unstable political sitution that was prevalent at the time, or perhaps with the introduction of assignats. Many people did not trust this new paper money and large amounts of silver were stashed away.

Abstract: The coins recovered from the Dutch East Indiaman De Liefde wrecked off the Shetland Isles in 1711 and sold at Glendining's in 1969 are tabulated, after correction of some erroneous attributions in the sale catalogue. The frequency of the dates of ducatoons of the Spanish Netherlands and silver riders of the Dutch Republic are compared with the

quantities struck according to the mint accounts. Explanations are proposed for the

differences in survival rate calculated for some periods and provinces.

Abstract: During the Middle Ages no coins of pure copper were struck in Western Europe, though this metal was in fact used for para-monetary purposes (counters and tokens). It was also employed as an alloy in silver coins with a low silver content. Not until the 15th century was small change of pure copp-er introduced in Italy where Byzantine and

Arabic copper coins had remained in use longest (Venice and Naples in 1472). In the Western countries copper money was introduced first in the Burgundian Netherlands: in 1543 a ‘korte’ (1/12 stuiver) of copper was issued in the place of the billon ‘korte’. The radiate crown which the Emperor wears on this coin points to the fact that its prototype was the Neapolitan cavallo. At the beginning the use of copper was limited to the very

smallest denominations. Larger coins of pure copper (1/4 stuiver) were first struck in the province of Holland after the Revolt of 1572. In this case the copper issues were used as

a means to raise money to meet the expenses of the war. Through these fiscal measures copper money came to be used generally. When the coinage was reformed in the Spanish Southern Netherlands in 1580 all coins of 1/4 stuiver and lower values were henceforth made of copper. In the Northern independent provinces the use of billon small change was more long-lived. After the war emissions had come to an end in 1580 the province of Holland did not issue any copper doits (1/8 stuiver) until 1590, now without motives of gain, and only intended for circulation in the province itself. The

example of Holland was copied in the following years by most of the other provinces and towns. A survey is given of all the copper coins struck in the Netherlands before 1600.

Abstract: The contacts in the Baltic Sea area between Sweden and Livonia can, somewhat simplified, be divided into violent and non-violent relations. In trading relations the Gotlanders is a quite prominent group - as well in the written manuscripts as in the numismatic material. The more violent actions are associated with the Swedish kingdom.

The Gotlanders considered themselves privileged and not obligated to take part in the Swedish king's warfare. Despite the geographical closeness between Sweden (through Finland) and Livonia and the fact that we know that the Swedish king and his troops actually stayed in Livonia for some time (1350-51), the Swedish coins were hardly used in Livonia. But the Gotlandic örtug that was produced from c. 1340 was well known in Livonia. It was used as an international currency and acknowledged by large groups of different political and economical actors.

Abstract: In Sweden, two major inventory and publication projects of coin finds from Sweden began in the 1970s: Corpus nummorum saeculorum (CNS), dealing with detailed information about Viking Age coin finds, and Sveriges Mynthistoria Landskapsinventeringen (SML), with the purpose of publishing coin finds from all time periods and from a more general perspective. The paper addresses two main issues.

Firstly, since the launch of the projects the theoretical perspectives have somewhat

altered the questions that researchers and museums ask of collections. What role do the old inventory and catalogue projects play today and what lies in store for them in the future? Secondly, a new volume in the series SML was published in spring 2015, dealing with the northeastern part of the province of Skåne in Sweden. What can be learned about coin circulation in the period c. 1600-1800 from a total inventory of coin finds in a region?

Source: Palaeohistoria 32 (1990) p. 331-338

Abstract: A gold coin made into a brooch, found in 1967 at the cemetery of medieval Scheemda, was identified as an Almohad dobla minted in Spain or North Africa during the caliphate of Abu Yusuf Yaqub al-Mansur (1 184-1199). The coin is reinforced on one side with gold wire and brackets of sheet gold. A total of nine such brooches has been found in the coastal area of the northern Netherlands and northern Germany. Formerly these

brooches were connected with the so-called Frisian Crusade of 1217, du ring which several Moorish towns on the SW coast of Spain were sacked. It is shown in this paper that no evidence for such an connection can be brought forward. Coin brooches occur regurlarly in the northern Netherlands and northern Germany from the 7th to the mid 15th century. The relatively large number of brooches made of Almohad gold coins seems to be related to the increased export of West African gold to western Europe by way of Almohad North Africa and Spain during the 12th century.

Source: Palaeohistoria 39-40 (1997-1998) p. 529-534

Abstract: In two papers in this journal attention was drawn to brooches made of 11th-13th century gold coins (largely Almohad dinars and half dinars) and of local imitations in gold of Almohad coins in the coastal areas of the northern Netherlands and northern Germany (Koers et al., 1990; Lanting & Molema, 1993/1994). In this paper three recent discoveries are presented (fig. 1). The first one is a brooch made of an Almohad

dinar/dobla found during an archaeological excavation at the Haukenwarf near Oldorf, Ldkr. Friesland in Germany, in a 12th/13th century context (fig. 2). The dobla was minted for caliph Idris I al-Ma'mun ( 1227-1232), who reigned only in the Andalusian part of the

Almohad empire (fig. 3). The reverse of the brooch shows a cross made of two narrow

strips of a gold-silver alloy. The second find is a brooch made of a local imitation in gold of a dobla of Almohad type. It was found by a metal detector user on a construction site near Heerenveen, province of Friesland, the Netherlands (fig. 4). The back of this brooch is decorated with a cross in low relief, made of silver, cJosely related to the anchor-crosses on the coin brooches of Scheemda, Leeuwarden and Veenklooster (Koers et al.,

1990; Lanting & Molema, 1993/1994). The third find is a brooch made of lead-tin alloy, found by a metal detector user in a soil dump, excavated at an unknown locality in the inner city of Dokkum, province of Friesland, the Netherlands. This brooch clearly is a copy of a dobla of Almohad type, with its square-in-circle motive, and its short wigglely lines imitating Arabic script (fig. 5). A lily-cross in high-relief on its front side is parallelled by a similar cross in gold filigree on the coin brooch of Itzingaborg near Norden in northern Germany, made of a masse d'or of the French king Philippe IV,

minted between 1285 and 1314 (Berghaus, 1958, Tafel 3: 24). Late 13th-century dates are proposed for the two coin brooches of Heerenveen and Dokkum. Although the number of 'Almohad' coin brooches is small, two subgroups seem to be present: an eastern group with crosses made of metal strips, and a western group with crosses

made of metal wire on the reverse. Local imitations have sofar only been found in the Dutch province of Friesland (fig. 6). The presence of this small number of Almohad coins

in the northern Netherlands and northern Germany is striking. HistoricaI sources make clear that thousands of Almohad coins were imported into England in the 12th-13th century. Despite that, no Almohad coin has been found in England, sofar (Grierson, 1974, p. 391).

Source: Palaeohistoria 35-36 (1993-1994) p. 323-328

Abstract: In a previous volume of this journal attention was drawn to brooches made of Almoravid and Almohad gold coins and of local imitations of Almohad coins (Koers et al., 1990).

These brooches seem to be typical of the northern Netherlands and northern Germany, although coin brooches as such are found over a much larger area, from the 7th to the

15th century. Since that publication appeared new literature has become available. Especially Monedashispano-musulmanas by Antonio Medina Gomez (1992) is very useful. Not only are photographs shown of both sides of each coin, but also are the inscriptions printed separately in the corresponding Arabic script, in phonetic transcription and in Spanish translation. It appears that the determinations of the coins

by Koers et al. are correct. However, what they called dinars are in reality half dinars, and what they called doblas are in fact full dinars. This confusion over the names of Almohad coins is widespread, and has its origins in 12th century Christian Spain. Furthermore, the division of the coins - halfdinars of Abu Ya'qub Yusuf and full dinars or doblas of Abu Yusuf Ya'qub - is less puzzling than Koers et al. thought. In fact the first named only produced half dinars, the second only doblas. Recently two new finds have been discovered in Friesland. The first is a brooch made of an Almohad dinar or dobla

found by a metal detector user on the grounds of the Fogelsanghstate near Veenklooster, the other a fragment of a local imitation of a Almohad dinar, also found with a metal detector, on the terp Wijnaldum II. It is not sure that this imitation was used as a brooch. The Veenklooster brooch (fig. 2) is damaged, probably by ploughing.

The back is decorated with gold filigrain, in the shape of an anker-cross. Despite the fact that the coin is worn, and despite the decoration on the back, the inscriptions are legible

resp. identifiable, thanks to Medina Gomez. There is no doubt that the coin was minted for the Almohad caliph Abd Allah I (1224-1227). This is of some importance, because in this case no connection with the 'Frisian Crusade' of 1217 is possible. However, Koers et al. had aiready pointed out that trade was more likely to be the source of these Almohad coins than warfare. The decoration on the back of the Veenklooster brooch is closely related to that on the Leeuwarden, Scheemda and Wirdum brooches (fig. 4). These four brooches may have been made by the same goldsmith. The Wijnaldum fragment (fig. 5)

clearly belongs to the group of imitations of Almohad dinars, known from the Stavoren and Damwoude coin brooches (Koers et al., 1990). These imitations were made by sticking together two small discs of sheet gold, decorated with the same stamp. Contrary to the genuine Almohad coins, the gold content is low (13-14 carats). The Wijnaldum

fragment is part of the centre, inside the square. Although it can not be proved that this

particular 'coin' was ever used as a brooch, it seems likely that these imitations were specially produced for this purpose. Finally, attention is drawn to a brooch made of a morabitino of Sancho I of Portugal (1185-1211). which was found in or before 1984, and sold at an auction in 1985 (fig. 6). It was found near Oppenhuizen, province of Friesland. Its present whereabouts are unknown.

Abstract: This paper lists and contextualises the c. 200 coins of Islamic origin (mostly silver

dirhams) deposited in England down to c. 1100. They include specimens from both hoards and single-finds, and are concentrated in eastern and northern England. Most coins were produced in the eighth or ninth centuries, and the volume of finds falls off with coins minted in the first quarter of the tenth century. These features, along with the common cutting-up of these coins and their association with other pieces of hacksilver, suggest that the majority should be associated with economic exchange between

England and Scandinavia, where silver dirhams were widely used. However, there is also evidence for pre-viking importation via western Europe of both gold and silver coins; a route which never dried up entirely even in the tenth and eleventh centuries.

Abstract: Apart from the general family medals treated in earlier publications (those made by the 17th-century silversmiths Pieter van Abeele, Joannes Lutma and Wouter Muller, published in 1943 by J. W. Frederiks, and those by the 18th-century Holtzhey's in JMP 1971/72 and 1973/74) many other general types were in use in the Netherlands in the 17th and 18th

centuries. Family medals served as commemorative pieces on the occasion of weddings, wedding anniversaries, births or baptisms, and funerals. They were either made specially for the occasion, or could be bought ready-made. Forty-six types of the latter kind are described here, in more or less chronological order, established on the basis of the dates engraved on the medals known so far. These types have been identified by the present

author from a catalogue of over 1600 Dutch family medals, shortly to be published by Dr. A. J. Bemolt van Loghum Slaterus. More than Va of this total number of medals are

of a general type. They can be defined as cast or struck medals, with symbols proper to the occasion in question, without reference in design or text to specific persons or dates, but with engraved names and dates in cartouches, on banderoles, in the exergue or on the rim of the medal. Of nearly each of the 46 types several, sometimes many, different specimens are known with different names and dates. Some of the types were used over long periods of time. The symbolical representations on the medals are for the larger part stereotype, though they have sometimes been arranged in an original way. The

meaning of most of the symbols and personifications with their attributes is clear, either because it was rooted in tradition, or because it is explained by the legends on the medals. Moreover, of a number of 18th-century general types so-called Verklaringen (Explications) have been preserved, i.e. sheets of paper which the medallist provided to his customers, on which he explained what he meant to express with his symbolism. Following the description of the 46 general types, there is a register of all the

personifications, attributes and symbols to be found on these medals, with an indication of their significance.
