GRAND SOVEREIGN’S MESSAGE

On a date I cannot now remember in early 1981, one of my mentors (a Past Grand Master of Masons of California) approached me about joining a group called Constantine. I was not sure what it was other than he told me that it was very important for me to belong. I was initiated on May 1, 1982. My Conclave meets twice a year, and since my initiation almost 35 years ago I have only missed one meeting. It was 1985, the year I was Grand Orator, and the Grand Master (a member of our Conclave) planned an out of town cornerstone laying ceremony at which I was to give an oration, and it was on the same day as Constantine!

The members of my Conclave were the leading Masons in Los Angeles, and there I was a 32 year old Mason among these giants of the fraternity. I did a lot of listening. Now, I have the opportunity through my Conclave to mentor the young men who will be among the giants of California Masonry in the years to come.

Constantine has also offered me something else that is special. It has allowed me opportunities to explore in a Masonic context how Christianity deepens my Masonic experience and vice versa. I belong to a great Lodge: we have Christians, Jews and Muslims who are members. But, it is Constantine that offers a special place where we can focus as Trinitarian Christians on the meaning of our faith and Freemasonry.

As I travel this year, my remarks will focus on this relationship. I am very much looking forward to the times we will have together this term and the perspectives we can share on our faith and fraternity.

Yours in Faith, Unity and Zeal,

Steve

New York was home to the UGIC 144th Annual Assembly, and what an event it was! A highlight of the event was the passing of the Most Illustrious Grand Sovereign banner from KC Robert S. Finley, KGC, to KC R. Stephen Doan, KGC, on Saturday morning, 4 June 2016!

There were many administrative requirements accomplished each day, including various committee meetings, a seminar for Recorders and Intendants General, and of course the UGIC General Sessions. On Saturday morning, a Memorial Service was conducted for the Knights Companions who passed in the last year. This service honored KC Donald R. Swanson, KCC, KGC, Past Intendant General Division of Nebraska from 12 June 1982 – 2 June 1998.

Each evening there was a reception followed by dinner; the Saturday night formal banquet is always a great event with all dressed in their formal attire; however, the highlight of the banquet was the dessert prepared especially for the Red Cross of Constantine…Chocolate Peanut Butter Pie with Whipped Cream, dusted with cocoa powder. Yes, it was mouthwatering!

The Friday afternoon social event was a picnic lunch at the boat landing, and a boat tour of the Erie Canal, including a few of the locks. Photos of the boats follow.

Each day, the UGIC Hospitality Room was in operation providing “goodies” to all those who took advantage of the opportunity, morning, noon, and night!

So, if you have not attended a UGIC Annual Assembly, now is the time; the 145th Annual Assembly in Pasadena, California will be a real extravaganza! See the registration form included herein!

Our world today seems to be in a state of turmoil where at times Christian values appear under attack from both religious and secular forces. As Knights Companions, we watch these events and wonder why the hallmarks of our fraternity do not propagate throughout society as we wish, why it seems difficult to spread the purpose of our beloved Order, “… to cultivate the social virtues, appeal to the intellectual and moral qualities....”, why so few seem to follow the chivalric code and Masonic principles we hold dear.

History suggests that this may be a cyclical occurrence over time as the focus of society on its character waxes and wanes. Certainly, chivalric concepts and principles existed before the Christian era. But, it can be argued that Constantine’s victory at Saxa Rubra, his adoption of the Labarum as his Ensign of Victory and Celestial Protection in battle and his encouragement of his Christian soldiers to include the mysterious Chi-Rho monogram on their shields paved the way for the evolution of these principles. Official military use of these symbols helped spread the teachings of Christianity among Roman soldiers and began to have a modifying influence on their conduct. The idea of chivalric principles as a way of life began to emerge.

These ideas blossomed during the Middle Ages, beginning with Charlemagne and the Holy Roman Empire. The mounted horse soldier (knight), or chevalerie, from which chivalry is derived, began to follow a code of military prowess, piety, and service to others, which emphasized the social and moral virtues and was supported by the Church. By the late Middle Ages, this code of chivalry was an established moral system giving the follower the feeling of honor and nobility.

Gautier, in his work La Chevalerie, summarized his definition of the code of chivalry at the start of the Crusades as,

Believe all the Church teaches and observe all its directions Defend the Church Respect all weaknesses, be their defender Love thy country Do not recoil before the enemy Make war against the infidel without cessation or mercy Perform your feudal duties scrupulously, if not against God’s law Never lie; remain faithful to your pledged word Be generous and give largesse to everyone Be everywhere and always champion Right and Good against Evil and Injustice

We see the continuing development of this code of chivalry during the Crusades, as the concept moved from the conduct of a militarized group of knights to the idealization of the Christian warrior so infused in medieval literature. Knights owed a duty to country and fellow Christians, duty to God and protecting the innocent, and duty to women through graciousness and service. Knighthood became a social rank, and as nobility, not all cavalry were knights. The rise of a bourgeoisie with wealth allowed sons to be educated in the knightly class, further expanding the influence of the code of chivalry.

THOUGHTS ON THE HISTORY OF CHIVALRY

By K. C. Arthur Weiss, Grand Orator

    10

Yet, even as chivalry had expanded further into society, it became more viewed as idealism rather than applicable to living real life. The Renaissance brought a reduced concern for external threats to Christianity and more infighting within the faith, more internal, political wars, and fewer knights in action as warfare techniques changed. Society began to attack the romantic idealization of chivalry. No greater example of this was Miguel de Cervantes’ Don Quixote de la Mancha, where the hero clings stubbornly to the code of chivalry and is made out to be a fool. Other writings argued chivalry was outdated and not in step with society. Later, when Queen Elizabeth I made knighthood exclusively the realm of the monarch, the age of chivalry was essentially over.

But, although the cycle may have come full circle, the idealism of chivalry did not disappear. As the Renaissance progressed, the code of chivalry was replaced with the concept of gallantry, or refined elegance, a state of mind by which men should live. The period of Romanticism also tried to resurrect the ideas of chivalry.

As the Renaissance gave way to the modern era, Freemasonry established its public presence and its tenets began a new cycle of consideration of chivalric principles. Andrew Ramsey’s fanciful 1737 oration on Freemasonry’s connection with Crusader knights inspired the addition of Christian Knighthood degrees to our craft. Our Order, begun in its current form in the mid-nineteenth century by merging this Christian Knighthood tradition in Freemasonry with the historic pretext of the Constantinian orders, gives us an opportunity to live out and reflect upon the principles of chivalry as part of our personal path toward truth and perfection. As we demonstrate these traits in our lives, in open society, we hope that our fellow men will become aware of what we stand for and want to follow this path as well.

Thus, we must work to continue this new cycle, to reestablish the chivalric influence of our Masonic and Christian tenets in the face of current societal apathy, and redirect the view of society to the positive - toward the vision that our Lord has established. In these stressful times, we must remain unified in purpose, faithful to our country and our God, and zealous in our actions to abide by the chivalric and Masonic tenets we hold dear.

    14

In the ritual of our Constantinian Order the second in rank in a conclave is the “Eminent Viceroy.” The term “viceroy” means “assistant king,” and if Constantine is presumed to be a “king,” then calling his second in command “viceroy” makes some sense. Or maybe nonsense! For the order also declares that the “Eminent Viceroy” is the “Venerable Eusebius,” and in this capacity he is supposed to be a bishop. From a historical standpoint, the Emperor Constantine was not a “king” in the first place, and his “assistants,” if any, would have been the two “deputy emperors,” called “Caesars” at this point in Roman history. That he would have had a Christian bishop as his “viceroy” is not only ahistorical, but absurd as well. However, as Masons we are familiar with the stuff of legends, and as legends go, it is a rather interesting one. So the Red Cross of Constantine degree posits the idea that the Emperor Constantine had a deputy emperor by the name of Eusebius.

But that is not all that is curious about our ritual. Who was Eusebius anyway? It would be simple if we knew which Eusebius the makers of our ritual had in mind – but we don’t. There were two men of this name associated with the Emperor Constantine, and both men were bishops. Since the authors of our ritual did not identify which “Eusebius” they had in mind, both can be claimants for the position of “our” Eusebius.

One “Eusebius” was Eusebius of Caesarea, bishop of the City of Maritima Caesarea in Palestine. He is also called Eusebius Pamphili, because he was a disciple of, and the successor of Pamphilus, Bishop Caesarea. This Eusebius was a great scholar, and wrote a comprehensive history of Christianity, which we still have. He was born sometime between AD 260 and AD 265, and died in either AD 339 or AD 340. The sources for our information vary, so these dates are imprecise. His “history” was so significant that he is called the “Father of Church History.”

Another “Eusebius” was Eusebius of Nicomedia, a city in Asia Minor which was also the location of one of Constantine’s palaces. We don’t know the date of his birth, but he died in AD 341. As you can see, he was a contemporary of the other “Eusebius,” and it is likely that this is the cause of our confusion as to which “Eusebius” we portray in our ritual. He was a distant relative of the Emperor Constantine, and if we have to pick one “Eusebius,” it is this one that is probably intended in our ritual. It was Eusebius of Nicomedia who baptized Constantine just a short time before his death, and who seems to have been more closely associated with Constantine, as he lived both at Nicomedia where the government of Constantine was located, and then at Constantinople, after Constantine had moved his government there from Nicomedia.

By another curious twist of history, both of these bishops were present at the Council of Nicaea where Constantine forced the adoption of the “Nicene Creed,” the first official and comprehensive definition of Trinitarian Christianity. And both bishops grudgingly gave their support to the definition that finally emerged from that council. Both Eusebius of Caesarea and Eusebius of Nicomedia doubted that the creed as adopted was an accurate definition of the nature of the Trinity. That definition insisted that Jesus had been God from the beginning of time, along with God the Father. These two bishops, along with many others, thought that if God had a son, that the Father must have been in existence prior to the coming into existence of the Son. Their viewpoint was espoused by another bishop of their day, Arius, and this point of view is known in history as “Arianism.”

WHO WAS EUSEBIUS?

By K. C. John L. Cooper III, Grand High Prelate

    15

Candidates for the Red Cross of Constantine must be “Trinitarian” Christians, but we do not actually require of our candidates any specific definition of what that means. However, if our “viceroy” represents either of the two bishops named “Eusebius,” then it is entirely possible that the “Arian” understanding of the Trinity should be our definition as well. However, history has overtaken us. Arianism died out, and the view espoused by the authors of the Nicene Creed prevailed in the Church – both East and West – by the end of the sixth century. Today “Trinitarian” Christians would all be adherents of the Nicene Creed of the Emperor Constantine, and thus the question is a moot one for us. Or is it? Is it possible that the authors of our ritual wanted us to think about these issues and perhaps come to our own conclusions about the nature of Christianity? We may never know, because we don’t know who created our ritual. But whoever it was gave us an interesting and curious insight into history.
