Preamble...
“Let there be charity so that other people
may share my family’s prosperity” said
Sri P.S.Govindasamy Naidu, the benevolent
philanthropist, who believed firmly that “Charity
begins at home”. He daringly defined charity as
“To serve society through development of
education, industry and the needy and poor”.
Thus was born PSG College of Arts & Science in
the year 1947 to the PSG & Sons’ Charities Trust,
which was founded in the year 1926, by the four
praise worthy sons of P.S.Govindasamy Naidu.
The four brothers of the PSG family were
T h i r u P S G V e n k a t a s w a m y N a i d u ,
Thiru PSG Rangaswamy Naidu, Thiru PSG Ganga
Naidu and Thiru PSG Narayanaswamy Naidu. They
took “Charity through Education” with great
missionary zeal.
“The Destiny of a Nation is decided in its
classrooms” - PSG College of Arts & Science has
proved this prophetic statement with conviction by
emerging as one of the premier institutions of
higher learning in this country. The college has a
long standing academic tradition of excellence in
research and scholarship. This is coupled with the
most advanced facilities for the pursuit of higher
learning. The college has a team of experienced
and efficient faculty and its academic programmes
are challenging and updated. Thirty Nine under
graduate and Twenty Four post graduate
programmes are offered and many of them are
unique. M.Phil and Ph.D programmes are offered
in Nineteen Departments.
The PSG College of Arts & Science (PSGCAS) has
crossed several milestones of development ever
since its inception in 1947. The dedication and
teamwork of all its stakeholders have won several
laurels to the institution.
The College has been recognised as a ‘College
with Potential for Excellence’ (CPE) by none
other than the highest educational body, viz.
University Grants Commission in 2004. It is one
among the 47 in the country, one among the 8 in
Tamil Nadu, and the only one under Bharathiar
University in the first phase to attain this status.
Satellite Interactive Terminal (SIT)
of the EDUSAT now at PSGCAS
Recognizing the progressive and quality initiative
of the college in its teaching and learning,
methodology the Consortium for Educational
Communication (CEC), New Delhi, of the UGC
and the ISRO, identified our college for the
Satellite Interactive Terminal of the facility
the EDUSAT. It is one among 3 Arts & Science
Colleges in the country to have received this.
Through this facility, virtual programmes are
received and transmitted to and from the college.
The college has conducted several virtual training
programmes on e-content and Multimedia for
teachers in association with CEC. The
programmes are conducted through video-
conferencing. Further, e-content prepared by our
teachers are transmitted from our college using
this facility.
Virtual Library
The National Library & Information Service
Infrastructure for Scholarly Content (N-LIST) has
identified our college to offer the e-library
resources under the National Mission in Education
through ICT Scheme of the UGC. Very few colleges
in the country have this honour. Faculty and
students can have free access to over 6,300
e-journals and 51,000 e-books online.

Faculty Profile
The tradition of academic excellence of the college
is coupled with the most experienced and
competent teachers. The college has a strong
team of 338 teaching staff. Among them 152
teachers have PhD and 186 have MPhil
qualification and most of them are of national and
international repute in their respective fields.
Autonomy
The college attained full academic AUTONOMY
conferred by the UGC in 1978. It was one of the
five colleges in the State of Tamil Nadu to be
conferred autonomy in the first phase itself. It has
successfully completed 36 years of autonomy.

ASSESSMENT
Under Autonomy, the college follows the system
of evaluation with Continuous Assessment (CA)
for 25% and End Semester Comprehensive
Examination (CE)-for 75%. Some papers have
100% continuous assessment. Practical papers
have 40% CA and 60% CE marks.
“Transparency in examination,” wherein, the
students can scrutinize photocopies of their valued
answer scripts is another unique feature.
Research, Extension & Consultancy
The teachers of the college quench their thirst
for more and more knowledge through research,
extension and consultancy Activities.
“Giving back to the community” is the ultimate
aim of education at PSGCAS. Hence, extension
activity is an in-built component of all the
programmes.
The college also has signed a number of
Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with
various reputed universities and institutes within
and outside India. To name a few, the college is in
connection with the ICICI - Bank, Triumphant
Institute of Management Education Pvt. Ltd.
(TIME), Confederation of Indian Industry (CII),
ICT Academy of Tamil Nadu(Membership only),
National Testing Service-India (NTS), Apple Green
of Director Mr. SM Vasanth and Munster University
of Applied Sciences, Germany.
The college is well embarked in research and
extension activities through various funded and
collaborative research projects with many foreign
universities. The researchers in the institution
have already acquainted its relationship with a
number of foreign universities for collaborative
research work. To name a few, the researchers
in college are currently in collaborations with

Technology, Khartoum Sudan, GMBU e.V.;

Further, the Institution is also providing

Student Support & Progression
Extended programme of employment has been
started in the college to help nurture the talents of
the students and to develop leadership qualities in
them.
Other co-curricular activities like NSS & NCC have
also drawn out the best in them. Our NCC cadets
have continuously participated in the Republic
Day Parade at New Delhi and won several laurels.
One of our cadets was honoured with the Duke of
Edinburgh Award for meritorious NCC activities.
Our cadets are continuously identified for the
“Youth Exchange Programme” to foreign
countries.

Many PG students have received funding from
Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and
Technology for their research projects.
Special courses in communication skill are offered
at the dedicated Communication Skill Centre.
* Facility for UG students to write the
Comprehensive Examination in English / Tamil
is provided.
* Facility to qualify in extra courses, other than
those of their parent programme is available.
* The ‘Centre for HOPE’ “Helps Our People
Excel” with aptitude, career and personal
counselling.
* All the faculty members participate in academic
and personal counselling through the tutorial
system and if needed the students are referred
to the Department of Psychology for personal
counselling.
* Twenty six scholarship schemes are offered to
the needy students.
* Regular feedback from students is obtained.
Six students’ workshops on `Curriculum,
Development, Examination Reforms and
Path Finder in Basic Sciences and
Humanities ’ are conducted for and by the
students annually. The recommendations are
referred to the various Boards of Studies and
appropr iate Government bodies for
consideration and implementation. This makes
the students important stakeholders.

* The college has more than 1100 TREES (76
species) with ECO-FRIENDLY GREEN CAMPUS

* Has planted more than 4500 saplings around
the campus comprising of TEAK, MAHAKANI,
NEEM, THESTESIA etc.
* More than 72 SPECIES of birds have been found
in our campus. Among the 72 bird types 58
species reside and 18 of them breed inside the
campus, 15 species are migratory (Golden
oriole from Himalayas)
* The institution has installed solar cells on top of
the buildings ensuring an efficient conversion
of solar energy to electricity. The institute is
able to generate 33% of the electricity that is
currently being utilized (200 KW covering a roof
top of 20,000 sq ft.)
* The institute has a well established effluent
treatment plant, to make sure that the wastes
generated in the whole college campus is being
treated and is not discharged into the natural
water systems (Treated water – 1.5 MLD)
* The treated waste water is used in watering the
garden to maintain a green environment.

organic wastes – composted – manure for
garden.
* The campus has a green house and medicinal
plants garden, so that the knowledge about the
plants could be transferred to the next

THE CENTRE FOR WOMEN'S STUDIES
The Centre for Women's Studies (CWS) of
PSG College of Arts & Science was inaugurated
on 12.12.2012.Gender is not the only basis of
oppression in any society. There may be other
factors such as race, ethnicity, caste, class and
even age due to which a section of a given society
may be oppressed. The Centre for Women's
Studies aims at socio- economic empowerment of
all categories of women in order to create a society
founded on gender equality and social justice.
Women 's studies is a scholarly enquiry into the
social reality from women's perspective and tries
to find explanations and remedies for the unequal
p o s i t i o n o f women i n t h e s o c i e t y.
Centre for Women's Studies had joined hands with
the already established and functioning Women's
Forum - “SHRISTI” and Women Anti-Harassment
and Protection Cell (WAHAP) organized various
programs and activities for the students and
faculty members of the college.

The Placement Cell caters to the employment

of the society through proper guidance and

Entrepreneurship Development Cell- PSGCAS

he Centre for Incubation,
Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development (CII&E) of PSGCAS, started Entrepreneurship
Development Cell from Sept' 2012. The EDC cell is managed by trained faculty from Entrepreneurship
Development Institute of Ahmedabad, (EDII).
The EDC conducts Entrepreneurship Awareness Camps (EAC) of
three days duration to the final year science students with a view
to present them with the major alternative of entrepreneurship
as a viable alternative to employment. During the training the
students apart from getting the basics of entrepreneurship also
interact with first generation entrepreneurs (including
successful alumni) and visit the manufacturing unit also.
The EDC also conducts 36 day Technology based Entrepreneurship Programmes (TEDP), Women
Entrepreneurship Development Programmes (WEDP) and Entrepreneurship Development Programs
(EDP) sponsored by DST-NIMAT under the guidance of EDII, Ahmedabad and EDI Chennai.
So far more than 1500 students have undergone the training and many of the students motivated by the
training founded Innopreneurs Club during sept 2013 and organized several meetings and conducted the thfirst i-Week celebrations from 03-07 March 2014. The event saw panel discussion on innovation and
entrepreneurship with live participation of many entrepreneurs from India and USA. The events included
competition on innovative idea generation, business plan competition, Quiz and display of innovative
products/services in which more than 500 students took part.
The EDC cell also organized the “workshop on Hyper-realism” a
first in Coimbatore in which experts from Chennai trained
CASIANS on the special skills and tools needed for this new art
form. Students who are thus trained have already begun
