BeforedivingintothePsalms,we’regoingtotakesometimethisweektoorientourselves,andgettoknowoneanotherasagroup.Thiswillbebeneficialingettingthemostoutofourtimetogetheroverthecomingweeks.

SingingandchantingthePsalmsisanancientpracticeintheJudeo-Christiantradition.However,manyProtestantshavenothadexposuretothejoyofthisspiritualdiscipline.

OnewaythatwecanrespondtothePsalmsistospendtimecomposingapsalmourselves.WecanwritepoemsorsongsthatareinthespiritandstyleofthePsalms,orevenre-writeorparaphraseanexistingpsalmtofitourmoderncontext.

WhatmakesthePsalmssopowerfulisthattheyprovidelanguagethatwecanandshoulduseinprayer.WritingourownpsalmisnotabouttryingtoreplacewhatiscollectedintheBible.Rather,itisahelpfulexercisebecauseitchallengesustofilterourthoughtsandprayersthroughtheScriptures,whileexpressingourfeelingsbeforeGodinapowerfulway.
