FESTIVAL PROGRAM

AUG 18-21, 2022

WELCOME!BY KATARINA HENRYSON

Dear singers and festival participants! It is a joy to look forward to sharing a few days with you. Ten years have passed since last time we hosted a festival in Stockholm. It’s about time we do it again.

When I write this the world looks pretty dark, with horrible wars in Europe and elsewhere. A worldwide pandemic is still a part of our everyday lives, and so is the risk of collapse of ecological systems that are crucial for life on Earth.

– Should we be singing?– Yes!

Let us remind each other of the kind-heartedness of humanity. Let us come together to share our creativity and a sense of hope, as a reaction and constructive action to the gloom and doom in daily news. Singing together is one of the most obvious ways to manifest unity and non-hierarchical structures. We want many voices to be heard. Let’s have fun together and ignite a spark!

Welcome to The Real Group Festival 2022!

Four days of activities at four different venues: Södra Teatern, Dieselverkstaden, Rival and Eric Ericsonhallen. Each of these places has its own ambience, history and cultural significance.

The Real Group was formed in 1984 in Stockholm, a place where the Baltic Sea meets the lake of Mälaren; where salt meets sweet. Our music is inspired by many different flavours of music.

Urban and suburban lifestyles makes Stockholm of today a multicultural environment. During the four days of The Real Group Festival 2022, you will see different sides of Stockholm, as we explore new expressions, repertoire and creativity in a cappella music.

At this first concert, you will meet three groups from Stockholm. This concert features two groundbreaking Swedish ensembles that have played and are playing an active role in the evolution of swedish vocal music for the last decade(s). And of course the festival hosts - The Real Group.

You will experience the innovative sextet REIGN on stage introducing you to their fragile and powerful songs. They grab your attention and pull you in. You will also get to enjoy the amazing group Rilton’s Vänner (“Rilton’s friends”) - who seamlessly combine scandinavian pop with their own honest expression. Prepare to become one of their friends!Last but not least, The Real Group will appear in the current line-up to give you soulful originals and share some jazz.

Take A Note (led by Josef Sjöblom) will kick start the afterglow in the room Kristallen after the main concert.

After an intense day of workshops at Dieselverkstaden (the “diesel factory” in English) we are happy to give you an equally intense concert evening starting out with the instant music of the RAMA Corner collective, that has been developed during the day, guided by Jim Daus Hjernøe.

The night will also offer other smaller vocal dishes to satisfy your musical taste buds. Your plate will most certainly contain traces of Vocal Brand from Stockholm…..

The evening will end with our Danish guests from Syng Selected, that will be bringing down the hall under the guidance of musical “roof-lifter” Morten Vinther. Some Danish bounce just might happen.

Some of us may never forget the concerts at The Real Group Festival in Stockholm ten years ago. The energy still lingers on and you will recognize some voices from that time. You will also get to know some new singers. What could be better?

The Real Group, Latvian Voices featuring Shipsea, Rajaton and the Swingles will perform two concerts with a similar format but with different repertoire. Which means, that you will hear all four groups and Shipsea both at the 16 o’clock concert as well as at the 20 o’clock concert.

The concert venue as well as the hotel Rival is owned by ABBA’s Benny Andersson, whatever that means. It is worth mentioning though.

SINGLE SINGERSAt noon we will have a session for the festival participants where we will enjoy the performance by the Single Singers led by Emily May t'Hoen and Annemarie Homan.

AU REVOIRThe festival team will take the opportunity to say thankyou and goodbye.

AFTERNOON CONCERTMargareta Bengtson, who is one of the founding members of The Real Group, and Anna Jalkéus who is a jazz singer, a composer and a harpist – just like her mother – will play their harps and sing together.

Latvian Voices, Shipsea/Jānis Šipkēvics and Syng Selected (conducted by Morten Vinther) will choose music from their repertoire that the hall invites them to perform.

We hope we will conclude the festival in such a way that we all feel ignited, inspired and full of hope!

WORKSHOPS

THE REAL GROUPCREATEANDERS EDENROTH & PEDER KARLSSON

Friday, 13-14:30Saturday, 10:30-12

The contents of this workshop are the same on Friday and Saturday.

Learning by trial-and-error has played an important part of the development of The Real Group since the beginning.

In this workshop, Anders Edenroth and Peder Karlsson will combine exercises, verbal / visual presentations and audio examples with song excerpts – with or without scores. Yes, of course we will sing together!

The goal with this workshop is to give you an introduction to our experiences of various artistic and creative aspects of group development. We will provide an overview of topics such as:

- Repertoire development (arranging, composition and rehearsal processes)

- Stage presentation (concert programming, stage positions, choreography and song introductions)

- Recordings

Questions are most welcome.

RAJATONCREATESOILA SARIOLAESSI WUORELAAHTI PAUNUJUSSI CHYDENIUS

Friday, 16:30-18

Create, sing, listen and FINNISH your work!

This session is led by four Rajaton members who will share their thoughts and knowledge on how to be creative in a vocal ensemble. “Four topics popped out as a result of one big discussion with the whole group and now you will hear how the individual members will take a short dive into their favorite pond of inspiration”.

Soila will focus on creativity, intuition and improvisation: – How can I start? Essi’s cornerstone will be singing: – Who am I, why do I sing and actually what is my voice? Ahti centres his attention around listening: – How do I listen and why it’s important? And Jussi addresses the topics composing and arranging: – How to wrap it all up, make a score AND FINNISH?

The session includes THE starting point, the four topics and THE ending.

THE SWINGLESCREATEMEMBERS OFTHE SWINGLES

Friday, 15-16:30

Join The Swingles for a behind-the-scenes look into their creative process.

From Bach to Bjork and from traditional folk to original music, each song in the wide breadth of The Swingle repertoire has that distinct Swingle sound and essence.

Come learn about how the group approaches each new work going from initial idea to composition/arrangement all the way to rehearsing and recording, all while trying to remain true to the original legacy of the group.

LATVIAN VOICESCREATELAURA JEKABSONEJANIS STRAZDINS

Friday, 10-12:30

Creativity has been the main tool in a cappella "problem"-solving in Latvian Voices. When the group was founded, we knew that we wanted to sing a cappella, but we didn’t have any repertoire. So we decided to solve the problem by making our own music. However, after 13 years and approximately 300 a cappella songs, we've observed some tendencies.

- Four cornerstones of composition/arrangement: Idea; Shape; Interpretation; Reality check

- How does the repertoire change when the members of the group change?

We'll be happy to try out some exercises with all the workshop participants, which of course, will include singing. We will touch on: 1) how to work on your "input", 2) collaboration "ping-pong" in songwriting and 3) excerpts of "extremes" in Latvian Voices repertoire

RAMA CORNERJIM DAUS HJERNØEFri, 13-14:30, 15-16:30, 20-20:30

This workshop is in two parts: workshop #1 OR workshop #2 ➝ a short performance in the evening

In this workshop aimed at vocal group & choral singers and conductors alike, Jim Daus Hjernøe will present an overview of his innovative concept, “The Intelligent Choir & Vocal Painting”, for learning and rehearsing jazz/pop choral music. As a participant in this workshop, you will experience instant music-making, music created on the spot, in a spontaneous and easy-going manner.

The Intelligent Choir methodology is an offspring of Jim’s musical philosophy: to train vocal leaders to inspire their singers to take more initiative and, through co-creation, share responsibility in the musical process.

VOPA is a vocal evolution of Soundpainting by Walter Thompson, and it has become a new language for vocal art, used to complement conventional conducting techniques of choir music. VOPA currently consists of 75 signs.

MEET DMYTRO

DMITRO VYGOVSKYICo-host: KATARINA HENRYSON

Friday, 10:30-12:00

– How can we provide connection and support?

In this session, Dmytro Vygovskyi will provide a retrospective of the a cappella scene in Ukraine and give his perspectives on networking within this culture.

He will also present his views on sound engineering for vocal groups.

RESONANCEKATARINA HENRYSON& MORTEN VINTHERFriday, 13:00-14:30Saturday, 10:30-12:00

The contents of this workshop are the same on Friday and Saturday.

– What is the essence of the communication within the choir, and between the choir and the audience?

This workshop invites you to investigate if physical and sonic energy can be produced and if so, what it does to us. Our experience is that when the singing resonates with the body and the physical frame you are in, it increases the impact of the activity. This may seem obvious but after decades of ensemble singing it's clear, that these aspects can not be underestimated.

Through physical and vocal exercises we would like to share our thoughts on how to practice this, as well as inspire you to be courageous and explore the field on your own.

The workshop draws its inspiration from performance art (Marina Abramovic), the improv.ensemble “Songs of the Moment” and 35 years of singing with The Real Group.

CONCERT DESIGNASTRID VANG-PEDERSENSaturday, 12:30-14:00

– How do you create a captivating staging of your choir performance?

This workshop helps you reflect on this question by introducing The Concert Design Concept.

Concert Design is a conceptual and practical approach to designing embodied, aesthetic and communicative choral and vocal music performances developed by Astrid Vang-Pedersen. The concept provides methods to reflect on the concert situation as an event and tools for singers to expand their skills as performers.

In this workshop the Concert Design Concept will be introduced and illustrated, through inspirational exercises involving the participants, providing insight into the craft of designing choral performances through thoughtful choices regarding visual, embodied and communicative elements.

SWINGING WHEN SINGINGFriday, 16:30-18:00

With Clara Fornander, Joanné Nugas, Johannes Rückert Becker, Axel Berntzon and Daniele Dees

What is “swing” feel and how can you find more groove in your jazz repertoire? How do you make that extra step towards sounding less like a classical choir and more like a jazz ensemble or big band? How do you combine your singing, breathing and hearing into the right focus for being in the groove and the swing? The current singers of The Real Group will give a workshop focused on singing a cappella music with a jazzy sound and feel. They will talk about how to imitate classic jazz instruments, give some examples from their own repertoire as well as other famous vocal groups andgive concrete examples and exercises to try out. This workshop is as much of a presentation as it is a safe space for you to practice. The Real Group has a strong foundation in singing jazz music and the current members all have different musical backgrounds where some of them stem from many years of jazz studies in both vocal and instrumental music.

THE REAL GROUP

JAMULUS AND ONLINE REHEARSALSTULIPS FROM IKEASaturday, 10:30-12:00

The vocal quartet Tulips from IKEA has been rehearsing and performing since April 2020 and has yet never sung together being together in the same room!

When the pandemic hit, musicians all over the world found themselves looking for ways of continuing making music while in isolation. One lifeline proved to be the free software Jamulus, which makes it possible to sing and play together online, just like being in the same room! The quartet became the first acappella act pioneering this new opportunity and has performed at numerous online live concerts. Currently they’re working on recording an album with an online-based big band with the musicians playing from their homes all over Sweden.

In this workshop the quartet will be on stage together for the first time ever to share their history, tips and tricks on how to get started while performing songs a cappella as well as with guest musicians using Jamulus.

THE REAL GROUP MAKEOVERVIDEO PRESENTATION

CARL ENEROTH+ PAST AND PRESENT THE REAL GROUP SINGERS

Friday, 15:00-16:30Saturday, 14:00-15:00

The topics of this workshop are the same on Friday and Saturday.

In this workshop, Carl Eneroth will first present his documentary movie “The Real Group Makeover”.

After watching the documentary, workshop participants and panelists have a discussion about processes of change and transformation in general.

ABOUT THE DOCUMENTARY

The Real Group Makeover is a 25 minute film about the process where the quintette during the fall-21 and spring-22 goes through a major shift of generations.

Five new members join the group so that original members Katarina Henryson and Anders Edenroth can leave the group in their hands. You will follow the singers from the first dress rehearsal to the opening night on Södra Teatern, a venue where The Real Group has made many performances since the start in 1984.

Moderator: LOUISE HÅRD AF SEGERSTAD

Saturday, 10:30-12:00

– How can we make a difference? How can singers, vocal groups, choirs, and our organizations inspire real change, and contribute to ecological, social and cultural sustainability?

– How can we expand our understanding of music and society through connecting with people and networks beyond our current circles? How can we connect quick individual action with long-term activities in large networks and organizations?

As a starting point for discussions, four different projects / perspectives will be presented:

● Global Vocal Happening: inspire grassroots activity and connect East with West, South with North (Başak Doğan – Istanbul Vocal Akademi)

● Applying sustainability in a large organization (Sonja Greiner – European Choral Association)

● Choirs for Ecocide Law: bring awareness to legal action to protect Nature (Peder Karlsson – End Ecocide Sweden)

● Building a network from scratch (Navvád Owusu & Nayireth Córdoba – Vocal Latinoamerica, Panama)

After these short presentations, there will be discussions with the workshop participants and with the panel, moderated by Louise Hård af Segerstad (Albaeco).

VIDEO CREATION JOSEF SJÖBLOM

Friday, 13:00-14:30

“Ten things I’ve learned as a filmmaker in the a cappella world”

Whether you want to make a music video, document a live concert or make your group stand out in social media: avoid these common mistakes and focus on the fun part - the creative process. Josef Sjöblom will be sharing strategies, experiences and concrete tips from his years behind the camera recording singers.

From a background as a choir singer with a Teacher/Choir Conductor Degree from the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, Josef has an adequate insight and understanding of the limitations and possibilities of recording vocalists. He stands with one leg in the a cappella world and one as a content creator, specialized in making vocal music videos and helping groups to cut through the social media noise.

Josef has collaborated with groups such as The Real Group, VoNo Vocals, Adolf Fredrik’s Music School, the Church of Sweden and others.

If you decide come to the festival with your own group we have a special offer for you. Tailor-made coaching is available in two 90-minute sessions. You will share the session with one other group and will be guided by two singers/coaches from the festival artist groups.

This format of coaching is very rewarding, since it allows exchange of inspiration and attention between active and non-active singers and the two coaches. The groups take turns singing during the sessions and we all learn from it.

Grab this opportunity to get new musical input and learn from the coaches as well as from the group you share the session with!

ARTISTS

THE REAL GROUP

The Real Group is a Swedish vocal group with five dedicated singers and musicians. The group has been touring for more than 30 years and continues to excite a broad audience all over the world.

With a unique musical expression in a field between jazz, pop and Northern European choral music, The Real Group is considered one of the leading forces in the world of vocal music.

RAJATON The Finnish word Rajaton translates as "boundless" – a word that so accurately describes the way this six-voice a cappella ensemble approaches music. Rajaton exposes their audiences to the kind of diversity of repertoire, singing style, and stage presentation that has made them a phenomenon on the world stage.

In Finland, Rajaton is a bona fide pop phenomenon, successfully bridging the gap between classical and mainstream and the group has grown immeasurably through collaborations with other a cappella artists, including The King’s Singers and The Real Group, as well as productions with film directors and choreographers. But it is perhaps their deep passion for choral art, their generosity of spirit and their sheer enjoyment of singing that has won the hearts and acclaim of audiences and critics everywhere.

In 2022, Rajaton celebrates 25 years of music-making. The voice is boundless.

THE SWINGLES Five-time Grammy winning vocal group The Swingles have been pushing the boundaries of cappella music since they shot to fame in the 1960s. Today, The Swingles glide effortlessly from genre to genre using close mic amplification and audio looping to reinvent jazz, classical, folk, pop and world and their original songs.

“Talented, talented people” – JAMIE CULLUM

Proudly supported by generations of fans from their global touring and appearances on film and TV soundtracks, including ‘The Two Popes’, ‘Sex and the City’, ‘Wedding Crashers’, ‘Glee’ and Disney’s 2021 block buster, ‘Cruella’, The Swingles creative drive and fresh approach to their new music keeps this legendary group at the top of their game.

LATVIAN VOICES

Latvian Voices is a professional a cappella group from Latvia. With their voices as the only musical instrument, Latvian Voices have developed a unique individual vocal style, in which intonations from ethnic music of many nations intertwine.

The majority of the repertoire is arranged and composed by the group members, most of all by Laura Jēkabsone. The repertoire of Latvian Voices is vast: from Latvian folk songs and original compositions with lyrics from traditional Latvian folklore to examples of Classical music in inventive transcriptions. The concerts are usually enriched with arranged melodies of popular and worldwide known songs and modern original compositions by Latvian Voices.

Since the group’s founding in 2009, Latvian Voices have participated in many international music festivals, competitions, workshops, and concert tours across Europe and worldwide.

Since 2017 the group have enjoyed curating their own highly successful annual a cappella festival in Latvia. These events comprise masterclasses and collaborative concerts with artists, such as The Real Group from Sweden and Rajaton from Finland.

SHIPSEA Shipsea is a music project founded by singer, songwriter and audio producer Jānis Šipkēvics.

Once a member and co-founder of the a cappella group Cosmos, he also co-founded Instrumenti – one of the most successful avant-pop bands from Latvia in the region. They have toured all around the globe and has opened for Björk, Arcade Fire, Whale Watching Tour, Mika, Depeche Mode and others.

Jānis has collaborated with Gidon Kremer and the orchestra Kremerata Baltica, shared the stage with Bobby McFerrin and sang at Marina Abramović’s durational performance The Cleaner at the Modern Art Museum in Stockholm in 2017.

Compositions by Šipkēvics have been performed by various choirs and orchestras in Europe, at the International Sacred Music Festival in Riga and at the Venice Art Biennale. He has scored many theatre plays and motion pictures.

Shipsea plays various instruments and loves collaborating with an invisible choir.

RILTONS VÄNNER

Meet Riltons Vänner (Friends of Rilton), award-winning vocal group from Sweden who have performed at almost 1000 concerts in many parts of the world. With their own unique crossover between pop and Swedish melancholy, Riltons Vänner has over the years become one of Sweden’s most acclaimed vocal groups.

”Orkar, Orkar inte” is Riltons Vänner’s 6th full-length album, which also marks the group’s 20th anniversary. For five years the group paused, but found their way back to each other with new strength, inspiration and playfulness. The album was nominated in five categories for CARA awards 2020, (acappella equivalent to Grammy): Best Pop Album, Best European Album, Best Pop Song, Best Folk/World Song & Best Original Song.

REIGN Formed by vocalist and composer Anna Lindahl during her time at The Royal College of Music, REIGN has entered Stockholms club venues and built a well earned reputation of being an outstanding live act. REIGN is an innovative, fresh pop explosion – unlike anything you’ve ever heard before.

”Despite Reign describing their music as pop, these sisters don’t draw lazy comparisons to the Spice Girls. Reign is refreshingly different and their angelic harmonies and soulful/R&B tones set them worlds apart”– Andy Collins, Scandinavian Soul

While singing beautiful, advanced and dynamic six part arrangements of both well known pop tunes as well as their own originals the band also play powerful drums, synths and percussion — No wonder they tend to knock the socks off their audience.

The choir was founded in 2014 by the Danish Youth Choir Association SYNG and has already been acknowledged internationally - latest at the prestigious festival SingStrong in New York in 2020. The choir meets 4-5 times a year and besides rehearsing and doing concerts in Denmark the choir has also toured in Israel, Sweden and the US.

Syng Selected is currently conducted by Morten Vinther (former The Real Group) and during the pandemic Syng Selected started developing original music written and arranged by members of the choir. Some of these tunes will presented in the concert and besides this, the audience can expect a repertoire containing expressive and beautiful pop tunes with power and energy, happiness and heartache.

30 YEARS WITH TOUCHÉWEBINAR FOR VOCAL GROUPS

AND CHOIR LEADERS

JESPER HOLM

SEPT 9 2022 14:00 – 15:00 CET

The creation of an a capella big band based on Real Group inspiration – from youth-choir to professional a cappella big band.

Jesper Holm tells the story of his work with Touché since 1992 based on inspiration from The Real Group, The Singers Unlimited and Count Basie Big Band.

Tips and tricks on how to get that marvelous sound. 12 members, but only one bass singer made the sound unique and so did for example the known “dubbing-studio effect“ done live.

Examples of the work in details on complex harmony, swing feeling and jazz phrasing and adapting big band expression will be a major part of this webinar to get you inspired. Recordings from these 30 years that you have never heard, will be played to show the development of the ensemble.

A Touché live version of the big band score of “Embraceable You” from The Real Group's album with big band, will also be shown, and the process of making it totally a cappella will be explained

HY-FLEX LEARNINGWEBINAR FOR VOCAL GROUPS

AND CHOIR LEADERS

JIM DAUS HJERNØE

SEPT 15 2022 11:00am – 12:00noon CET

During the pandemic, vocal ensembles have had to learn how to use online tools. Apparently, an essential element is missing when we do not meet in person. Still, there are parts of a learning process that can be done with the aid of online tools.

HyFlex learning (flexibility in hybrid) is a singer-centered model that integrates three components: learning-in-a-room together, online video conference sessions, and content accessed by individual singers when they prefer.

In this session, Jim Daus Hjernøe will show you concrete examples of HyFlex learning for vocal groups, choirs and choir leaders, for the purpose of saving time for music-making in the moment when we are together, and for creative musical development.
