BOOK NO III PLAY NO I “HEAT LIGHTENING”

1. WHERE DOES THE PLAY TAKE PLACE? OR DESCRIBE THE SCENE/SETTING OF THE PLAY.

The play takes place in a bus station which is located on a deserted highway. There is the drab interior of the bus

station

2. WHAT HAPPENS WITH EACH FLASH OF LIGHT?

Each flash of light is followed by the large bursts of thunder. The light inside the room also dims with the flash of

lighting.

3. WHO IS THE FIRST MAN? HOW DOES HE LOOK?

The first man is a pleasant looking man. He is thirty five years old. He is wearing a hat. He enters the stage the first.

4. HOW DID THE GIRL ENTER THE STAGE?

The girl banged the door and rushed into the room. She shut the door and threw the bolt inside. She was out of breath.

5. WHAT WAS THE MENTAL CONDITION/CONDITION OF THE GIRL?

The girl was mentally confused and frightened. She was out of breath. She was sobbing. Her clothes were muddy and

wet. Her hair was disheveled.

6. WHY WAS THE GIRL FRIGHTENED/ WEEPING AND SIGHING?

The girl was frightened and was sobbing because a killer was following her. She rushed into the bus station to save

herself.

7. WHY DID THE GIRL ASK THE FIRST MAN FOR HELP?

The girl asked the first man for help because she was afraid of the killer. Moreover, the first man was the only person

present on the stage.

8. WHY WAS THE BUS LATE?

The bus was late due to bad weather. There were flashes and thunders with heavy raining.

9. FROM WHERE WAS THE GIRL COMING?

The girl was coming from her friend‟s house. She had been at a party there. She didn‟t stay there and returned home.

10. WHY DIDN‟T THE GIRL STAY AT HER FRIEND‟S HOUSE?

The girl didn‟t stay at her friend‟s house because she thought that she would reach her home as there was enough gas

in her car.

The girl‟s house was eight miles away from the bus station. She was coming back from a party at her friend‟s house.

The girl got down of her car because it had run out of gas. She took her flashlight and walked down the road.

The girl couldn‟t see the killer clearly because she was frightened to see him. Moreover, it was darkness outside.

The girl saw a man who was dragging the corpse of a girl. She also noticed the light hair of the girl. However, she

couldn‟t identify him.

The girl circled in the woods because she wanted to escape from the killer. She wanted to get rid of him.

16. WHY DIDN‟T SHE GO TO POLICE?

The girl didn‟t go to the police because she couldn‟t describe and identify the killer. She had not seen him clearly. She

was afraid of the questions of the police.

17. WHY DID THE FIRST ASK HER QUESTIONS AGAIN AND AGAIN?

The first man asked the girl questions again and again because he wanted to know whether she could recognize him

or not.

The second man was a non-descript sort of person. He was tall and nice looking. He was thirty years old.

The second man accused the first man of lying by saying that the first man had tried to hide the presence of the girl

inside the room. He had concluded it because the first man was reluctant to answer him.

The girl doesn‟t get suspicious as the play progresses rather she considers him a nice person. Even she requests him

to help her. She recognizes him in the end of the play when she sees her torch in his hand.

21. WHAT IS THE IMPORTANCE OF FOURTH OF JULY IN AMERICA?

The fourth of July is an American Independence Day. It is celebrated with great delight. There are a lot of fireworks

and lightening on it.

22. WHY DIDN‟T THE GIRL ACCOMPANY THE SECOND MAN?

The girl didn‟t accompany the second man because she considered him a killer. She thought that he was following her.

23. WHAT WAS HER IMPRESSION ABOUT SECOND MAN?

The girl thought the second man a wicked person and the killer who was following her. Therefore, she screamed to see

him.

24. WHO SAVED THE GIRL?

A dog saved the girl in the end. It jumped into the room to save itself from the storm. The dog attacked the first man

and drove him away.

25. DISCUSS THE END OF THE PLAY.

The end of the play is sudden and dramatic. It has no logical ending. A dog suddenly enters, attacks the first man and

saves the girl.

26. WHAT TYPE OF PLAY IS IT?

It is a melodrama. It is a sensational play having exaggerated characters and emotions. It is full of horror and

suspense. It ends happily like a comedy.

1. WHERE DOES THE PLAY TAKE PLACE? WHERE IS SPELDING‟S HOUSE SITUATED?

The play takes place at Spelding‟s house which is located in Maryland, USA. Kreton‟s flying car also lands there.

2. HOW WAS THE ROOM FURNISHED? WHAT DID KRETON FEEL WHEN HE ENTERED?

The room was comfortably balanced between expensively decorated and the homely. Kreton felt delighted to see it.

3. WHAT WAS SPELDING DOING WHEN THE PLAY OPENED?

Spelding was concluding his weekly broadcast. He was broadcasting the news about a luminous object. He asserted

that it was a meteor rather a space ship.

4. WRITE A NOTE ON THE CHARACTER OF MR. SPELDING?

Mr. Spelding was middle aged and unctuous. He was a TV broadcaster. He hosted a weekly news program. He had

resonant voice.

Roger Spelding announced about the luminous object that it was a meteor rather a spaceship. He told that people

were making irresponsible conjectures (guess) about the object.

The phrase of “Mother Father America” reflects the love of the American for their country. It means that they love their

country as they love their parents.

Spelding disliked John because he was not get-up-and-go. He was not ambitious rather he was contended and

hardworking.

Spelding opposed his daughter‟s idea of marriage. He had materialistic perspective. He wanted her to marry an

ambitious, hardworking and wealthy person.

Spelding/General Powers thought that Kreton was either a spy or some lunatic. He thought that he might want

publicity by posing himself an alien. He called him a monster.

Kreton was a mild and pleasant looking man. He was side-whiskered and dressed in the fashion of 1860‟s. He was in

General Powers is a vigorous product of national guards. He is responsible for the security of his country. He is

ambitious and wants his promotion. His character is opposite to Kreton‟s role.

Kreton called human beings poor fragile butterflies because they are mortal. They have brief period of life and

uncertain life.

The spaceship was equal to the size of a car. It was oval shaped. It was made of unknown and shining metal. It had

fourteen foot diameter. There was no control panel inside it.

23. WHAT IS MARTIAL LAW? WHY DOES POWERS IMPOSE IT?

Martial Law is a law according to which, military takes over the management of the country in case of emergency.

General Powers imposed it to restrict communication.

24. HOW DID KRETON PROVE HIS EXTRAORDINARY ABILITIES?

Kreton proved his extraordinary powers by listening to Powers‟ mind, flying in the spaceship without instrument panel

and making an invisible wall around him and his spaceship.

25. WHY DON‟T THE KRETON‟S PEOPLE TRAVEL MUCH?

Kreton‟s people don‟t need to travel because they can watch the whole universe through special monitors and

reactors. They are more advanced scientifically.

pride, love, hate and joy. He liked to study the change in human civilization.

The earthen people can‟t compete with Kreton‟s people because Kreton‟s people are scientifically advanced. They

have controlled human emotions and death. They can listen to human mind and fly in spaceships. They can watch the

whole universe through monitors.

30. WHY DID KRETON WANT TO GET THE CONTROL OF THE EARTH?

Kreton wanted to take over the whole world to make the world much happier place. He wanted to bring peace and

compassion among the human beings.

31. WHY DID KRETON CALL HUMAN BEINGS WICKED CHILDREN?

Mr. Kreton called human beings wicked children because they have violent ideas. Kreton got confused to listen to

human minds.

32. HOW DAMAGING IS VIOLENCE IN LIFE?

Violence is very destructive in life because it disturbs human life in general. It affects intellect and threatens the

peace of mind. It finishes creativity.

33. WHAT TYPE OF LIFE DO YOU FORSEE IN 5000?

The life in 5000 will be totally changed. Man will get over human emotions and fly in cars. There will be no barrier of

time and space. Life will be peaceful.

34. HOW IMPRESSIVE WERE THE MORALS OF KRETON?

Kreton had impressive morals because he was peace loving and courteous. He was above the feelings of hate,

prejudice, pride and greed. He didn‟t harm Powers in spite of his ill behaviour and bad treatment.

35. CONTRAST THE TWO PEOPLE.

The people of the Mars and the earth have been contrasted in the play. Kreton‟s people are polite, contended and

peace loving. However, earthen people are emotionally driven. They have pride, hate, love, materialism and greed.

BOOK NO III PLAY NO 3 “OYSTER AND PEARL”

1. WHAT TYPE OF PLAY IS OYSTER AND PEARL?

The play is a sentimental comedy. It gives the idea of human faith in goodness of nature. It is about the plight of the

poor. It ends happily with the message of contentment and hope.

2. WHERE DOES THE PLAY TAKE PLACE?

3. The play takes place in Harry‟s barber shop. It is situated at O.K-by-the-sea, California. It is an old-fashioned shop.

4. WHAT IS THE CONDITION OF THE HARRY BARBER‟S SHOP?

It is an old-fashioned shop. It has many unusual things in it, which are not found in barber shops. There are shells,

books, hats, a rope and a life jacket.

5. WHY DOES HARRY WEAR DIFFERENT HATS?

Harry wears various hats like derby, western, homburg, skullcap, beret and straw hats. They express his quality of soul

and various moods. They also reflect the range of his soul.

6. WHY IS HARRY SITTING IN THE BARBER‟S CHAIR?/WHAT IS HARRY DOING WHEN THE PLAY BEGINS?

Harry is sitting in the chair to get haircut when the play begins. Clay is giving him hair cut.

7. WHO IS CLAY?

Clay is the boy of nine or ten years. He is the central character of the play. He belongs to a poor family. He wants to be

a barber to help his family.

8. ACCORDING TO HARRY, HOW DOES ONE BRING MERRIMENT TO THE TIRED OLD HUMAN HEART?

Harry says that one can bring happiness to old human heart by making music, painting a picture, writing a book or

inventing a philosophy.

9. WHAT IS HARRY‟S PHILOSOPHY? WHAT IS ITS BENEFIT? IS THIS PRACTICAL IN LIFE?

Harry‟s philosophy is “Take-it-easy”. It shows a way of life. It brings contentment, happiness and satisfaction in life. It

is practicable and finishes human materialism.

10. HOW MANY BARBERS ARE THERE IN O.K BY THE SEA? HOW MUCH DOES HARRY CHARGE FOR A HAIRCUT?

There is only one barber in O.K-by-the-sea. He takes only one dollar for haircut. However, he takes a half dollar or

quarter dollar from the poor.

11. HOW MUCH DID HARRY PAY FOR HIS BARBER SHOP? HOW LONG HAS HE BEEN IN O.K BY THE SEA?

Harry paid 75 dollars for the barber shop. He had been in O.K-by-the-sea for twenty four years.

12. WHAT IS A COUPLET? WHAT IS SHAKESPEAREAN SONNET?

Shakespearean couplet has two rhymed verses. He uses it in the end of a sonnet which is a fourteen line poem. It is a

lyrical poem. Shakespeare uses the rhyming scheme of ababcdcdefefgg.

13. WHERE IS CLAY GOING?

Clay is going to the beach to find something good for him. He represents human hope and therefore he optimistic about

his success. He goes to Black Rock to find an oyster there.

14. WHY DOES CLAY NEED MONEY?

Clay needs money to give an ad in the news paper to bring back his father who has left his house. Moreover, he wants

money to buy a gift for his mother.

15. WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO CLAY‟S FATHER?

Clay‟s father is a poor man. He is unable to run the family. He writes “Enough‟s enough” on the kitchen wall and goes

away without telling anybody

PROBLEM OF MISS?

MISS MCCHUTCHEON is a pretty girl with blond hair. She is a new school teacher at O.K-BY-THE-SEA. She is the

resident of San Francisco. She gets sick of her job and the children because she finds it difficult to control the rude

and careless children.

18. WHY DOES SHE GO TO THE BEACH? WHAT IS MISS MCCUTCHEON LOOKING FOR? HOW DOES SHE FEEL ABOUT THE

CHILDREN OF THE TOWN?

MISS MCCHUTCHEON goes to the beach to understand the children well because they miss their classes and go to the

beach. They are careless of their grades.

19. WHAT IS THE CONDITION OF THE CHILDREN?

The children are careless and unruly. They don‟t take care of their grades. They are interested in games and the sea.

No one has sensible ambition.

20. WHAT DOES HARRY ADVISE MISS TO TEACH?

Harry advises MISS MCCHUTCHEON to teach the children English, singing, dancing and cooking because they

interested in such subjects.

21. WHAT TYPE OF HAIRCUT DOES SHE WANT? WHY DOES SHE WANT POODLE HAIRCUT? WHAT DOES MISS

impress the children. Furthermore, she want to be simple and plain and dress up differently.

Harry can‟t give MISS MCCHUTCHEON poodle haircut because he doesn‟t know how to give it. Moreover, he doesn‟t

give women hair cut.

The women who want to get their children cut their hair visit his shop. He doesn‟t give women haircut.

Clark leaves his house and goes to Saliness. He comes to O.K-by -the-sea by a truck. He meets Harry and give him

thirty dollars for his home.

25. WHAT DOES CLARK GIVE HARRY? FOR WHAT PURPOSE?

Clark gives thirty dollars to Harry and requests him to give the same to his family. He is ashamed because he is unable

to meet the expenditure of his family.

Hollywood is two hundred miles away. It is straight down the highway.

27. WHO IS WOZZECK?

Wozzeck is the friend of Harry. He repairs watches, radios, alarm clocks and sells jewelry. He prepares cultivated

(fake) pearls.

28. WHO IS THE MAN?

The man is a writer. He writes a bit of everything and gets stories from his surroundings. He is the first writer who

visits Harry‟s shop except Fenton Lockhart.

29. WHO IS FENTON LOCKHART?

Fenton Lockhart is a writer and publishes a weekly paper. He himself writes the whole thing.

30. WHAT DOES MISS MACCHUTCHEON BRING FROM THE SEA?

MISS MACCHUTCHEON brings a cane chair without one leg and seat. She imitates children to get acquainted with

them. She acclimatizes herself to the surroundings.

31. WHO IS GREELY?

Greely is a small boy who is the friend of Clay. He brings a bottle of sea water. He thinks that there are invisible things

in it.

32. WHAT DID CLAY FIND NEAR BLACK ROCK? WHAT DOES CLAY BELIEVE IS IN THE OYSTER? HOW MUCH IS ITS

WORTH?

Clay finds a pearl near Black Rock. He considers that there is a pearl inside it. He finds it a good omen for his good

luck because water hardly gets low there.

33. DOES MISS MCCUTCHEON BELIEVE THAT THERE IS A PEARL IN THE OYSTER?

MISS MACCHUTCHEON believes that there is no pearl inside the oyster. Therefore, she insists on opening and

asserting to face reality. She is not an idealist.

Clay believes that there is a big pearl in the oyster. Its value is three hundred dollars. She finds it at the Black Rock

where water never gets low there.

MISS MACCHUTCHEON thinks that Harry has confused ideas and wants to play trick on Clay. She wants to teach

reality to the children.

MISS MACCHUTCHEON suggests opening the oyster. He doesn‟t believe in Clay‟s claim that there is a pearl in the

oyster. She advises her to open the oyster.

37. WHAT KIND OF JUDGE IS JUDGE APPLE GARTH?

Judge Applegarth is not a judge of any court. He once judged dogs at a country fair. He himself claims it. Harry doesn‟t

hesitate to call him a dog judge.

It is 1953. It shows that it is modern age. It is different from the Dark Ages or old ages.

Harry calls Wozzeck so that he may not damage the pearl while opening. He intends Wozzeck to insert a fake pearl in

the oyster. He wants to help clay.

The inhabitants of O.K-by-the-sea are very poor. A few people get jobs for only two months. Some people get pension.

The writer buys the oyster and pays three hundred dollars. He doesn‟t open it but looks at it carefully. He puts it into

his pocket. In fact, he wants to help Clay. He buys the story of hope which is itself a pearl.

45. WHY DOES CLARK LARRABEE RETURN?

Clark reads the ad in „The Gull‟ in which Clay has requested his father to come home. After reading the ad, he decides

to return.

46. WAS CLAY A BARBER?

Clay is not a barber but he wants to a barber. He plans to help his family by becoming a barber.

47. WHAT DOES HARRY DO?

Harry is a barber in O.K by-the-sea. He goes fishing. He helps others and shares the difficulties of others. He is a

contended person and preaches others the philosophy of „Take it easy‟.
