Auto ZERO-STAR SAFETY RATING OF INDIAN CARSGlobal NCAP recently released its report on crash

tests conducted on various popular models of Indiancars like Renault Kwid, Ford Eco Sport and M&M Scorpio in various variants (with and without airbags),giving them a zero rating in adult protection and poor rating in child protection. Driven by these scary results, ARAI has started a programme wherein carmakers canvoluntarily offer their cars for crash testing at a speed of 65 kmph, and will be allowed to feature these results intheir sales campaigns. However, this crash testing will become mandatory from 2018 onwards. In my opinion, this is a matter of serious concern for passengers, and the crash testing facility should be extended and made mandatory to all typesof passenger-carrying vehicles like buses, mini-buses and converted mini-vans which ferry intra-city commuters.

On another sensitive issue: the scrapping of old vehicles, the government is trying to seek public consensus by uploading an online draft policy to seek the inputs and opinions of various stakeholders. In essence, it’s a good idea, but the government should also fix the timeline for placing the related Bill in Parliament’s monsoon session to fast track the same.

With the adoption of many initiatives like BS-IV emission norms, safety on theroads and introduction of mega trends, the powertrain (the value chain from power generation to the output at the wheels) is under an innovative microscope in theauto sector. Our Cover Story presents some of the latest trends in this performance-enhancing aspect of automobiles.

The auto industry’s perennial thirst for brand differentiation and makingautomobiles aesthetically appealing to the eyes of the beholder, has brought in themost significant trends of stylishly designed automotive lighting systems with smart features. Some of these trends were very much visible in the impressive displays and new car launches during the Auto Expo 2016, which recently concluded at Delhi. In effect, they represent the immense challenges which the component suppliers have overcome and there are many more in the pipeline.

Similarly, rear-view mirrors have been inundated with smart features like integration with connected vehicle safety features, designer turn indicators, auto-dimming and even projector lamps for brand images, in addition to functionalitieslike motorised controls for opening, folding, angle adjustment and others. Here again, it is a challenge to the component suppliers who are even striving to create their owndesigns and offering the same to OEMs for original fitment.

We welcome your valuable feedback. Please write to: [email protected]
