Powering the CCTV industry with innovative edge technologies

The Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), and 5G are helping address growing global safety concerns by turning real-time event monitoring into actionable insight. Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) Solutions helps security surveillance technology providers (SSTPs) create video surveillance systems that enable CCTV customers to collect, process, and analyze vast amounts of information at the edge to protect people and facilities.

Demand for security systems is on the rise. By the end of 2025, the global video surveillance market is expected to account for US$43.8bn, escalating at a compound annual growth rate of 11.8%.1 In the US, this growth is fueled by significant investments from the government and defense authorities. Elsewhere, specifically in Asia, rising security concerns around crime, civil unrest and terrorist threats are a driving force.1

The use of CCTV cameras in business is also growing at a vast rate. Manufacturers are using video surveillance to improve health and safety and increase efficiency on the production line. Oil and gas companies are monitoring CCTV footage to secure remote pipelines, and retailers are using cameras to gather information to boost sales, track inventory and improve customer service.

This increased demand for video surveillance offers huge revenue generating potential for CCTV businesses and SSTPs. But this growing market opportunity also presents a challenge.

By 2020, there will be an estimated one billion internet-connected CCTV cameras deployed worldwide.2 They will be everywhere from sports stadiums to transit stations and public areas; through to retail stores, service centers, warehouses, and more. They will capture roughly 30 billion images per second or a hundred trillion images every hour.2 This translates into a huge volume of data that must be viewed and analyzed to identify anomalies and initiate alerts and responses.

Traditionally this data has been sent back to the data center for processing and analysis, which takes time, costs money and delays insight. But in the world of security and surveillance, where real-time decision making could be a matter of life or death, this approach is no longer good enough.

Recent Gartner research echoes this conclusion:

More video equals more data

The edge is where the action is: it’s a manufacturing floor, a building, a city, a power plant, an oil rig, a telecommunications outpost, or a sports arena. It’s where the “things” are in the IoT.

Taking powerful data center compute to the edge minimizes latency, reduces bandwidth, lowers costs, reduces system threats, avoids duplication, improves reliability, and maintains compliance. Most importantly, it means video footage can be analyzed in real time, allowing CCTV and video surveillance customers to act locally, in the moment, to improve security.

SSTPs looking to develop edge solutions need to work closely with partners that can deliver secure, rugged and reliable server technology and provide the worldwide support needed to keep operations running smoothly.

Computing at the edge

1bnBy 2020, there will be an estimated one billion internet-connected CCTV cameras deployed worldwide.2

Successful SSTPs will be those who can offer customers cost-effective video surveillance systems that generate insight based on real-time data analysis. For this, SSTPs need a technology solution that takes compute power to the edge.

“As market adoption of IoT grows, IoT endpoints generate ever-higher volumes of data. As a result, streaming all of the information to the data center or the cloud for management, analysis and decision making can be costly and inefficient.”3

Here’s what some leading CCTV and video SSTPs had to say about working with HPE OEM Solutions:

Vista - providing reliability and scalability instils confidence SSTPs need to know that their partners not only understand how to integrate complex technologies, but also offer global logistical support. Having confidence in a partner’s ability to deliver innovative server technology on time and on budget is critical in the fast-paced security and CCTV market.

For Vista, a UK-based CCTV solutions provider that develops value-added video management software, it was critical to work with a reliable server platform provider that offers years of experience and support. Vista needed to incorporate robust servers into its customized CCTV solutions that were highly scalable since customer needs often change over time. In addition, it was important to use technology that could easily adapt to new market opportunities. Vista sought a partner that could deliver technology on time, provide real-time actionable insight to customers, and offer the quality and reliability that customers demand. “The ability to offer products based on HPE server platforms allows us to add value by delivering quality and reliability levels that differentiate us in the marketplace,” said Gary Rowden, Divisional Director, Product Management and Business Development for Vista. “The HPE OEM Solutions program provides us with the platforms we need to build high quality products that customers can rely on for crucial activities like security monitoring.”

CUDO Communication – expanding into the global marketplaceVideo surveillance systems have evolved into more than just video recording devices. They are used to monitor crowds in public venues and for facilities management to protect people and companies.

For CUDO Communication, an independent system integrator that develops video surveillance solutions, the key is working with technology vendors that can provide intelligent event detection.

Venzo Secure - minimizing risk eases customer demandsSSTPs frequently need to integrate multiple forms of technology, including aligning server and storage systems into one customized, cohesive solution. This type of customization must be done without any downtime to ensure individual and public safety. In addition, SSTPs need to understand local compliance regulations in order to address specific needs for CCTV providers.

Delivering customized solutions that reduce implementation time is just one of the goals for Venzo Secure. The company, which provides turnkey surveillance solutions worldwide, develops pre-configured solutions that eliminate risk and complexity that is often involved with large infrastructure projects.

Venzo Secure partners with Milestone Systems, a global leader in open platform IP video management software. Venzo Secure realized it needed to work with a solution provider that could deliver optimized turnkey solutions for video surveillance deployments.

In addition to providing highly scalable and reliable solutions, CUDO Communication needed a partner that could offer state-of-the-art video surveillance solutions that could process and analyze high-volume video in real time and provide worldwide support.

Working with HPE OEM Solutions “means that we can build a customized solution that meets the performance, availability, and scalability needs of each customer at the price that’s right for their business,” said In-Kyu Lee, Director of CUDO Communication Security Business Division. “Deploying our solution on a platform that is supported worldwide by HPE OEM Solutions helps us to realize our goal of expanding into the global marketplace.”

Fortunately for Venzo Secure and Milestone systems, HPE OEM Solutions offers the technology and support that minimizes risk to meet increasingly challenging customer demands.

“Sizing hardware platforms for video surveillance is extremely challenging,” said Adrian Adolfsson, co-founder and COO of Venzo Secure. “It doesn’t matter what country you’re in, it is difficult to align server and storage requirements with video surveillance demands. We selected several HPE server platforms that we would use as recording and management platforms, and scoped each server based on the type of applications it would optimally support.”

The ability to work with a trusted partner that can exceed expectations and reduce the risk of investment is very important. “HPE OEM Solutions has a wide range of servers, and this allows us to offer proven solutions that Milestone partners can trust. To establish our position in the market, we needed to partner with a leading server company that could help us build solutions for mission-critical solutions,” said Adolfsson.
