Personal ornaments and belt fittings dating to the early Roman Period found in the area of the Dollkeim-Kovrovo Culture Agata Chilińska-Früboes M.A. (Dissertation)

I have been preparing my doctor thesis within the project »Forschungskontinuität und Kontinuitäts-forschung – Siedlungsarchäologische Grundlagen-forschung zur Eisenzeit im Baltikum«. My thesis concerns personal ornaments and belt fittings found on the Samland peninsula, Natangia and Nadrovia (see Jahresbericht 2012). In 2013 I fo-cused on gathering and analyzing archival data.

the original inventory cards are missing, therefore their origin is unknown. In 2013, using archival records, I determinate the place of discovery for about 90 artefacts (Fig. 1).

In the Museum für Vor- und Frühgeschichte I also worked on archival records from the Prussia Museum concerning circa 70 cemeteries from the Samland peninsula and the neighboring areas. For my thesis the most important information present in this archive is that related to investigations that occurred just before and during World War II. Re-cords in other archives I have worked with usually concern finds discovered only before the 1930s.

In September I, and several other members of the project (Dr. Heidemarie Eilbracht, Dr. Ja-roslaw Prassolow, MA Izabela Szter), performed analysis of the other part of the collection from the Prussia Museum, which is nowadays kept in the Kaliningrad Regional Museum of History and Art (Калининградский областной историко-художественный музей). Just as in the museum in Berlin, most of the finds had lost their inventory cards. Thanks to archival records I have determinat- ed places of discovery for 15 of them.

Finally I went to the Institute of History (Aja-loo Instituut) in Tallinn, where the archive of Marta Schmiedehelm is kept. Since the 1920s she had gathered information about artefacts from the Masurian Lake District and the neighboring areas. She documented hundreds of finds housed not only in the Prussia Museum, but also in many other places in Europe. Her archive contains a lot of important information about Samland in the Roman Period and the Migration Period (Fig. 2).

Most of the finds that I elaborate on were dis-covered between the 1860s and the outbreak of World War II. They were previously housed in the Ostpreussisches Provinzialmuseum and in the Prussia Museum in Königsberg. In the early 1940s a part of that collection was disposed, which rescued it from destruction. Unfortunately be- fore the 1990s almost nothing was known about those artefacts. Nowadays circa 50 000 finds from Königsberg are kept in the Museum für Vor- und Frühgeschichte, SMB-PK, in Berlin. For lots of them
