Over the next few lessons we are going to be exploring how we can design, make and evaluate our own pencil cases. To do that, we’re going to have a look at some different pencil cases to see how they have been

made and who they have been designed for.

We’re going to have a look at some different pencil cases on the next slides. What questions could you ask to find out

more about what they are like?

Pencil cases can be made from lots of different materials, including fabric, wood, leather, metal and plastic. Fabric pencil cases are usually fastened with a zip but they can also be fastened with buttons, velcro or poppers.

All of these pencil cases have had their pieces joined together by sewing.

These pencil cases do not have zips, buttons or

poppers. They have lids on hinges and are closed

with a catch.

Which of these pencil cases is metal and which is plastic? How do

you know?

This wooden pencil case has a ruler that slides over the top of the pencil case to close it.

What might be the positives and negatives of owning a pencil case like this?

Well done everyone! Who’s ready to go and explore pencil cases for

themselves?
