SEPTEMBER 18, 2018

A joint meeting of the Gloucester County School Board and the Gloucester County Board of Supervisors was held on Tuesday, September 18, 2018, in the Thomas Calhoun Walker Education Center Auditorium at 7:00 p.m.

I. CALL TO ORDER AND ROLL CALL A. Board of Supervisors -- The Chairperson of the Board of Supervisors called the meeting to order

at 7:00 p.m. Present for the Board of Supervisors were: Christopher A. Hutson, Chairperson, Phillip N. Bazzani, Ashley C. Chriscoe, Andrew James, Jr., Kevin M. Smith, Robert J. Orth, and Michael R. Winebarger, Members.

B. School Board -- The Chairperson of the School Board called the meeting to order at 7:01 p.m. Roll call was taken by the Clerk, and the following persons were recorded as present: Anita F. Parker, Chairperson, Troy M. Andersen, George R. (Randy) Burak, Brenda F. Mack, Elisa A. Nelson, and Robin M. Rice, Members. W. Jarret Lee, Member, was absent.

II. INVOCATION AND PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE --Mr. James led in the invocation and Pledge

of Allegiance to the United States Flag.

A. NATIONAL ANTHEM – Gloucester High School Choral Students sang the National Anthem. III. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES – No minutes were available for adoption. IV. ADOPTION OF THE AGENDA The Board of Supervisors adopted the agenda as presented.

For the School Board, a motion was made by Mrs. Rice, seconded by Mr. Burak, and unanimously approved to adopt the agenda as presented.

V. ADOPTION OF CONSENT AGENDA – The Board of Supervisors approved its consent agenda

as presented. VI. MATTERS PRESENTED BY THE BOARDS – Dr. Orth commended the Emergency Operations

Center (EOC). VII. COUNTY ADMINISTRATOR ITEMS – The County Administrator had no items to present at this time.

VIII. CITIZENS’ COMMENT PERIOD

Mr. Hutson asked if there were any persons present who wished to address the Boards. He asked that all persons state their name and the district in which they reside and limit remarks to three (3) minutes. The following persons came forward to speak:

Don Mitchell (York District) spoke regarding the schools CIP Plan.

Norman Brumfield (Abingdon) thanked the Board of Supervisors for action taken (on the consent agenda).

RECORDED MINUTES OF THE SEPTEMBER 18, 2018 GLOUCESTER COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD/BOARD OF SUPERVISORS MEETING PAGE 2 OF 2 IX. WORK SESSION AGENDA A. Preliminary SOL/Academic Results – Dr. Clemons provided information on the preliminary SOL

test results for 2017-2018, noting that all schools are expected to be fully accredited. B. Gloucester County Public Schools Opening Update and Enrollment Information (7 Day Count) –

Dr. Clemons updated both Boards on the opening of school for the 2018-2019 school year. Current 10-day membership was not available due to the days missed for the mandatory evacuation. The 7-day count stands at 5196 and budgeted number was 5200. Mr. Chriscoe asked to be apprised when the 10-day enrollment and end of September enrollment were available.

C. Gloucester /County Public Schools Capital Project Requests for FY 2020 – Mr. Hutchinson

reviewed the GCPS capital project requests for FY 2020. D. Adopt-A-School Program – Dr. Clemons asked members of each board to join together with their

counterpart to visit the school in their respective districts and for at-large members to visit the secondary schools. Ms. Nelson suggested that all members should visit the secondary schools.

E. Gloucester County Public Schools Legislative Priorities – Dr. Clemons discussed the legislative

priorities of the School Board and asked that the Board of Supervisors be mindful of those when submitting issues that should be included in the legislative package to be forwarded to area legislators.

F. Proposed Joint Meeting Calendar – Mr. Fedors and Dr. Clemons presented proposed dates for

the 2019 joint board meetings and chair/vice-chair meetings, to include an afternoon retreat in February.

XII. ADJOURNMENT At 9:12 p.m., a motion was made by Mr. Andersen, seconded by Mr. Burak and unanimously adopted to adjourn the special joint meeting of September 18, 2018, until the next regular School Board meeting on Tuesday, October 9, 2018, at 5:30 p.m. (closed) and 7:00 p.m. (open) at the Thomas Calhoun Walker Education Center. SEPTEMBER 25, 2018

A monthly meeting of the Gloucester County School Board was held on Tuesday, September 25, 2018, in the Thomas Calhoun Walker Education Center Auditorium at 5:33 p.m. (closed) and 7:00 p.m. (open).

I. ROLL CALL Roll call was taken by the acting clerk, and the following persons were recorded as present: Anita F. Parker, Chairperson, George R. (Randy) Burak, Elisa A. Nelson, William (Jarret) Lee, and Robin M. Rice, Members. Troy Andersen, Member, arrived at 6:20 p.m. and Brenda F. Mack was absent for the closed meeting.

II. CALL FOR CLOSED MEETING

At 5:33 p.m., a motion was made by Mr. Burak, seconded by Mr. Lee, and unanimously

approved to adjourn for a closed session, Pursuant to Code of Virginia, 1950, as amended,

Section 2.2-3711, (A), Subsection 1, for the discussion of personnel matters (monthly

appointments, resignations, etc.) and Subsection 2, for the discussion of student personnel

matters (Three (3)Religious Exemptions).

At 6:38 pm, the Chairperson declared a recess, and the meeting was relocated to the TC

Walker Education Center Auditorium.

* Ms. Mack arrived at 6:55 p.m.

III. RETURN TO OPEN MEETING/CERTIFICATION

Note: Ms. Carol Dehoux, clerk, recorded the remainder of the meeting. The clerk noted

that all members were present for the open meeting.

At 7:00 p.m. a motion was made by Mr. Lee to reconvene the meeting into open session and

certify that the Gloucester County School Board, while in closed session, discussed only

public matters lawfully exempted from open meeting requirements provided in subsection

A of Section 2.2-3711; and that only public business matters that were identified in the

motion convening the closed session were heard, discussed or considered. The motion was

A motion was made by Mr. Burak, seconded by Ms. Nelson and unanimously adopted to approve the monthly listing of personnel appointments, retirements, resignations, contract changes, and leave requests with the exception of item # 58. A motion was made by Mr. Burak, seconded by Mr. Lee and unanimously adopted to approve the student personnel items (Three (3) Religious Exemptions). (Approved personnel actions are attached to minutes.)

Note: Mr. Andersen and Ms. Mack arrived late and abstained from voting. VI. ADDITIONS/CHANGES/ADOPTION OF AGENDA

Dr. Clemons recommended the following changes to the agenda: Removal of item “X” Bert Schmidt, WHRO President & Brian Callahan, WHRO Chief Education Officer; removal of item “XIII/A” School Board/Board of Supervisors agenda items; change item “XIII/B” to 10 day count instead of 6 day count; and add “XIII/E” Make-up days to consider. A motion was made by Mr. Burak, seconded by Ms. Nelson, and unanimously approved to adopt the agenda as amended.

XI. SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS’ ITEMS

A. The VSBA Annual Convention is November 14-16, 2018 in Williamsburg, VA at a cost of $305 each. Members were asked to notify the clerk by October 1 if they would like to attend.

B. Mr. Andersen suggested that joint meetings should include both Board of Supervisors and School Board items, not just School Board items. Dr. Clemons will mention this at a joint chairs meeting.

XII. STUDENT ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAC) ITEMS None - Representative to be appointed XIII. SUPERINTENDENT’S ITEMS

A. School Board/Board of Supervisors Agenda Items for 9/18/2018 – Information

A. The (10) day enrollment report reflected 5252 students enrolled, with 5208 actually funded. Dr. Clemons said the FY’19 budget was built on an enrollment of 5200 students funded.

B. Dr. Clemons thanked the school board members for all they do and presented

certificates and pins to those who earned recognition from VSBA this year. Mrs. Parker presented Dr. Clemons his Award of Honor certificate and pin from VSBA.

C. School Board meeting times were discussed. Dr. Clemons proposed starting the regular

open meetings at 5:30 p.m. followed by closed meetings for a trial period of October through December. If this is successful, the board could then consider changing the start time for future meetings. A motion was made by Mr. Andersen, seconded by Ms. Mack, and unanimously approved to change the school board meeting times to 5:30

p.m. beginning October 9, 2018 through December 11, 2018 for a trial period.

D. Dr. Clemons shared with board members that the results of the second dress code survey were similar to that of the first survey. Fifty-three percent of those who responded voted to have a committee formed to continue to review the dress code. Dr. Clemons will solicit for committee members. Ms. Mack made a motion to form a committee to research the dress code, Mr. Burak seconded the motion. Mr. Andersen supports the motion, but wanted specific examples of what is being recommended, including pricing and availability. He would also like each board member to have the option to provide one student and parent to serve on the committee. Ms. Mack modified the original motion to include Mr. Andersen’s suggestions, Mr. Burak seconded the motion, which passed unanimously.

E. Dr. Clemons proposed the following make-up days for the time missed due to the mandatory evacuation of those in Zone A, which was imposed by the governor during Hurricane Florence: December 19 and January 23 & 24 (1/2 days becoming a full days); January 25 & 28 (Prof. days becoming ½ days); January 29 (1st day of 2nd semester becoming prof. day); and January 30 (becoming 1st day of 2nd semester). This would allow for 2.5 days to be recovered in the first semester. Mr. Burak made a motion to accept the proposed make-up days, Mr. Lee seconded the motion, which passed unanimously. Mrs. Parker questioned if the governor planned to make an exception regarding make-up days due to the circumstances and suggested Dr. Clemons discuss this situation with other superintendents.

XIV. INSTRUCTIONAL ITEMS A. Dr. Clemons presented the monthly instructional report in Dr. Wagner’s absence, noting

that seven of our schools (elementary/middle) have been recognized this year as “Virginia Natural Schools.” Peasley M.S. has been recognized for the past 19 years since the program was implemented.

XV. ADMINISTRATIVE ITEMS A. Mr. Hutchinson presented the monthly administrative items report. He informed

members that GCPS has entered in the VSBA Green Challenge and placed, but cannot move forward because we were a previous winner. He apprised the board of continuing efforts to control the humidity levels in “D Hall” at GHS and that he had located surplus desks to replace those damaged by the moisture. Ms. Mack asked if janitors were checking for mold and Mr. Hutchinson stated that it is being done day and night.

XVI. BUDGET AND FINANCE ITEMS

A. Ms. Lucas gave the monthly departmental report, noting that 763 employees signed up or updated benefits during the open enrollment period.

B. The July 2018 & FY’18 Unaudited Year End Financial Reports were provided in the

agenda packet. Ms. Lucas noted that the budget went down to $52,000 for the end of

the year.

C. The Activity Fund Audit for FY ending June 30, 2018 was provided in the agenda packet.

D. Ms. Lucas presented the donations for the previous month, with a total of $13,600 total donations and scholarships.

A motion was made by Mr. Lee and seconded by Ms. Mack to accept, with grateful appreciation, the donations as outlined. The Clerk polled the Board as follows:

XVII. HUMAN RESOURCE ITEMS

A. Ms. Ciemniecki presented the monthly departmental report, noting that the Master Schedule Collection process has been completed and will be submitted to the state this week, as well as the IPOP report indicating licensure of teachers for courses taught. On October 29, a retreat is planned for the human resource department.

VI. STAFF PRESENTATIONS/RECOGNITIONS WHRO Presentation - Bert Schmidt, WHRO President & Brian Callahan, WHRO Chief Education Officer gave a presentation regarding what is offered through WHRO and statistics regarding Gloucester’s involvement in the programs. School board members thanked them for their presentation and what is provided through WHRO.

Cool School Tech Tools – Technology Resource Classes - The Cool School Tech Tools presentation provided by technology resource class instructors, Jessica Lawson, Abingdon and Sharon Carino, Botetourt focused on a day in the life of a computer resource teacher and demonstrated how students are learning to be digitally literate citizens and use Google classroom. Both said that reflection and communication has been key in making the program successful and invited school board members to visit. They also added that the program uses two integral standards and is the prototype being used for all schools.

Disability History and Awareness Month - Kristy Holland, GHS Job Coach, gave a presentation for Disability History and Awareness Month, showcasing what she does with students at GHS to teach them job skills. Examples include a care closet, cookie baking/sales, working with the GHS workforce program in local businesses and “All things vinyl”, a printing service.

VII. SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS’ ITEMS VSBA Annual Convention - Mrs. Parker reminded members of the VSBA Annual Convention held November 14-16, 2018 in Williamsburg, VA. Cost $305 each. (Mrs. Parker, Mr. Lee, Ms. Nelson, Ms. Mack and Dr. Clemons are registered.)

VSBA Student Dress Codes - Mrs. Parker informed members of a VSBA Student Dress Codes and the First Amendment Webinar being held on October 30, 2018 (12:00 – 1:00) in Conf. Rm. A111 at TCWEC (Ms. Rice, Mr. Hartley and Ms. Ciemniecki have indicated they will attend.)

VSBA Bullying Prevention Month – Mrs. Parker informed members that October is “VSBA Bullying Prevention Month.”

VSBA Take Your Legislator to School – Mrs. Parker informed members that November is “VSBA Take your Legislator to School Month.”

VIII. STUDENT ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAC) ITEMS Christine Hicks introduced herself as the new Student Advisory Committee representative to the School Board and was welcomed by members.

IX. SUPERINTENDENT’S ITEMS

Membership Report - Dr. Clemons provided an update on Membership as of September 30, 2018, indicating that we currently have 5267 students enrolled, with 5223 of those funded. Our budget was built on 5200 funded positions. Approval of 2018-24 Comprehensive Plan - Dr. Clemons asked members to adopt the recently updated 2018-24 Comprehensive Plan.

A motion was made by Mrs. Rice and seconded by Mr. Burak to approve the 2018-24 Comprehensive Plan, which was unanimously approved.

X. INSTRUCTIONAL ITEMS

Monthly Departmental Report – Dr. Wagner presented information on the activities of the department and schools during the month.

Chromebooks for 6th Grade – Dr. Wagner presented information regarding Chromebooks for 6th Grade students.

XI. ADMINISTRATIVE ITEMS

Monthly Departmental Report – Mr. Hutchinson presented information on the activities of the department during the month, noting HVAC issues in some of our buildings.

XII. BUDGET AND FINANCE ITEMS Monthly Departmental Report – Ms. Lucas presented information on the activities of the department during the month, noting that on Nov. 6, biometric screenings will be held for GCPS employees.

Approval of Donations – Ms. Lucas highlighted the donations totaling $2,352.50 that had been received by the schools and the division. A motion was made by Mr. Lee and seconded by Mr. Burak to accept, with grateful appreciation, the donations as outlined. The Clerk polled the Board as follows:

August 2018, Financial Report – Mrs. Lucas presented the August 2018 Finance Report which was accepted by the Board as information.

FY’20 Budget Calendar – Mrs. Lucas presented the FY’20 Budget Calendar for approval. A motion was made by Mr. Burak, seconded by Ms. Mack and unanimously approved to accept the FY’20 Budget Calendar as presented. Driver’s Education Fee for FY’19 – Mrs. Lucas explained to members that due to state guidelines, our spending for driver’s education in FY’18 indicates the allowable rate for FY’19 is $85. She asked members to approve changing the FY’19 drivers’ education fee from $125 to $85, with reimbursements being made to any students who have already paid. A motion was made by Mr. Burak and seconded by Ms. Mack to approve changing the FY’19 drivers’ education fee to $85, with reimbursements being given to any students who have already paid $125. The Clerk polled the Board as follows: Ms. Parker Aye Ms. Mack Aye Mr. Andersen Aye Mrs. Nelson Absent Mr. Burak Aye Mrs. Rice Aye Mr. Lee Aye December 2018 Pay Date – Mrs. Lucas asked members to amend the approved pay date for December 2018 to the last working day of the month instead of the last day of the month. Staff will be notified that in December of 2019, they will be paid on the last day of the month. A motion was made by Mr. Burak, seconded by Ms. Mack and unanimously approved to accept the pay date change for December 2018.

XIII. HUMAN RESOURCE ITEMS Monthly Departmental Report – Ms. Ciemniecki presented the monthly report of activities for the human resource department, noting ongoing research regarding compensations comparisons, staffing needs, and the upcoming human resource retreat.

VSBA Take Your Legislator to School Month A Guide for School Boards & School Administrators

NOVEMBER IS “VSBA TAKE YOUR LEGISLATOR TO SCHOOL”

MONTH

Building a closer relationship between public education and the Virginia State Legislature is

essential to the well-being of our students. The Virginia School Boards Association urges each

school division in the state to invite at least one of their state legislators to visit their schools

during the month of November.

There are many benefits from participating in

VSBA Take Your Legislator to School Month,

including developing closer relationships between

school divisions, local communities, and our

elected officials, and creating opportunities for

productive dialogue so that educational and

political leaders can work together to ensure that

we provide the best possible education for our

students.

In addition, when legislators visit your schools as part of VSBA Take Your Legislator to School

Month, local students will have the opportunity to interact with elected officials and learn about

the important roles and responsibilities of Virginia General Assembly members. A visit by your

local legislator creates teachable moments.

What Types of Activities Can We Implement?

There are many different types of activities that your division and local legislators can

implement, including speaking to civics classes about current “hot topics”, reading to younger

students, participating in a mock election, discussing the Virginia legislative process, etc. The

precise format for each visit should be negotiated between the division or school and the

legislator, but we recommend it include a tour of school facilities conducted by a board

member or other division officials. Use this opportunity to raise awareness of division

successes, showcase a particular program that a legislator helped fund, or highlight division

needs that have gone unmet.

Promote & Celebrate Your Visit

❑ After you have issued your invitation and planned the visit, distribute a media alert

(sample enclosed) and invite the media to cover the visit.

❑ Take pictures and include a story about the visit in your division newsletter and on the

division web site.

❑ Have participating students send thank you letters to the visiting legislator.

❑ Notify the VSBA of your activities. We may attend your event, promote it in our

newsletter or on our web site, and/or include a news story in the VSBA Daily News.

We hope you will take advantage of this opportunity to strengthen the already solid bond

between public education and the Virginia General Assembly. These activities cannot help but

A Few Tips

Reading specialists, Christy Phillips and Katey Heuvel, along with the Achilles PTO president Sherri Shinault and her son Hayden, were on WXGM on Wednesday, October 5th to promote Achilles’ Third Annual Literacy Night. They discussed the new book, Poppy, and also explained what would happen at Literacy Night. DJ Neal Steele was excited to hear about Poppy and all the fun activities students would be participating in this fall related to the book.

Warrior Club students were chosen in each class that represented the trait of Kind and Considerate this month. Students enjoyed doughnuts and juice with the administrators and school counselor. Congratulations to Ava Cox, Caleb Mayhew, Aaliyah Amin, Odin Talbot, Deanna Boggs, Jackson Miller, Logan Whitaker, Estella Gaskill, Mays Trice, Bailey Ruzicka, Virginia Setterholm. Jonah Marina, Emily Nowell, Pablo Miles, Isabella Beach, Ainsley Crayton, Grace Setterholm, Kierra Millet, Ellary Miller, and Ashleigh Carter.

Achilles students and staff participated in our First Quarter Spirit Assembly. Student birthdays for August, September, and October were recognized. Student that completed their summer reading and math packets were asked to stand. The PTO awarded Sarah Jenkins a Fire Tablet for being the top earner in the Fundraiser with Ms. Beaubien and Ms. Spencer’s classes earning ice cream parties. Top AR point earners were recognized, along with information on our Schoolyard Habitat shared. Dr. Clemons, Dr. Wagner, and Mr. John Hutchinson were in attendance to see Achilles be awarded their Purple Star Designation.

Kristen Turner received Donorschoose.org funding for a classroom project called “Math Games for Future Mathematicians”. She will use these funds to purchase a variety of math games that reinforce math standards in third grade.

Katina Keener recently attended a three-day training in Greensboro, North Carolina sponsored by the BB&T Leadership Institute called Mastering Leadership Dynamics for Educational Leaders. This training focused on The BB&T Leadership Model, awareness of yourself as a leader, and conscious leadership. There will be follow up webinars and upcoming trainings to continue to cement these learning objectives.

Marissa Spencer was surprised by the Bayport Prize Patrol and awarded a $200 Bayport Grants. She will use this money to purchase OSMOs (a device that connects to the iPad) for the class to use as a new reading and math center during our guided groups. The students will primarily focus on buildings words, practicing number sense, and running their own pizza shop (financial literacy).

Congratulations to Katey Heuvel! She has been selected as a participant in the Multisensory Structured Literacy Instruction Pilot Project VII. This project is designed to address the needs of struggling readers who have difficulty with reading, spelling, and writing including those with a specific learning disability such as dyslexia.



Six principals from around the state visited Achilles on Monday, October 29th for a SURN Collaborative Visit. Principals visited three classrooms

and provided feedback to teachers on their visits.

Achilles Elementary school was successful for the third year in a row earning the Virginia Naturally School Designation. In recognition of our efforts to integrate the environment into our curriculum, the school received a state flower pennant featuring the Flowering Dogwood. The pennant will hang proudly in our hall along with the state bird pennant received last year and the plaque designating us a Virginia Naturally School received during our first year.

Achilles Elementary received the 2018 Purple Star Designation, being one of the first schools in Virginia to receive this distinguished honor. Daniel L. Dunham, the Military Student and Family Specialist at the Virginia Department of Education and Mr. Brian Wiliams, a Council member, attended our Spirit Assembly to present Achilles with the Resolution of Recognition from the Virginia Council on the Interstate Compact on the Educational Opportunity of Military Children (The Council). Achilles was also presented with an award coin to display.

Rhonda Taylor received Donorschoose.org funding for a classroom project called “Working Out the Wiggles”. She will use these funds to purchase 22 Balance Ball seats for her classroom.

Coffee with the Counselor is an invitation offered quarterly for Achilles families to meet with the School Counselor to discuss a specific topic. This quarter our families and counselor met to discuss our school-wide Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) program. Families were informed what PBIS is as a nationally utilized system of supports as well as how PBIS programs are implemented at Achilles. Families were also encouraged to provide feedback on our PBIS programs and the impact these supports have on their students.

The week of October 1st through 5th Fourth and Fifth grade students participated in Student Council Association (SCA) campaigns for various officer positions. Students created posters and campaign videos for our Second, Third, Fourth, and Fifth grade students to view to help them elect each officer position. Additionally, our classes elected their classroom representatives to attend SCA meetings and be the voice of their peers.

The reading specialists at Achilles held their first Title 1 Parent Night of the year on October 4th. Title 1 students and their families enjoyed a pizza dinner. After dinner, parents learned about the Title 1 program while the students made Take Home Bags filled with materials they could use at home to help them read and improve their literacy skills.

Achilles’ Third Annual Literacy Night Kickoff was held on Thursday, October 4th. This fall, Achilles will read Poppy by Avi. Students went to their classrooms to listen to books about owls and completed reading activities related to Poppy while their parents attended the PTO meeting. After the meeting, everyone came to the cafeteria to learn about our One School, One Book program and listened to Mrs. Keener read the first chapter of Poppy. At the end of the night, students and their parents enjoyed milk and cookies. Thank you to the PTO for their help in planning the milk and cookies portion of the night.

On Tuesday, October 9th, Kris Moore from Bayport Credit Union and her team of Savings Superheroes came to Achilles for a Savings Assembly. Students in grades 2-5 played Bingo with various financial terms such as interest, tax, supply, demand, and more. The students enjoyed playing the game and winning the prizes Bayport provided. Kindergarten and first grade students learned a song to help them remember the different coins, and identified quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies to keep in their new coin purses, which were provided by Bayport Credit Union. In addition to the one-day Savings Assembly, each Tuesday Bayport has been visiting Achilles so students can make weekly deposits into their savings accounts. We greatly appreciate our partnership with Bayport Credit Union.

Fifth grades at Achilles Skyped with climate and weather scientist Dr. Giuseppe Torri. Dr. Torri shared his background and answered numerous questions in an hour long session about weather events and their causes. He also offered to continue to correspond with our students throughout the school year.

October 22nd through 26th our school participated in Red Ribbon Week, a week dedicated to educating youth on making safe choices in order to promote a healthy lifestyle. Each day students dressed according to various themes and completed a daily challenge at school and/or at



home. These challenges encourage students to practice making healthy choices in all areas of their lives such as trying new things to grow their brain, practicing gratitude and kindness, and setting goals.

On Wednesday, October 24th, students participated in Unity Day. This national event encourages individuals to wear Orange to support all who have experienced bullying in their life. By wearing orange, we show that we are a united front against bullying and bullying behaviors. In addition to wearing orange, students participated in the “Be Kind Anyway” challenge. Students were encouraged to make kind choices throughout the day and reminded that while there are always reasons we may not want to be kind (bad day, someone was mean, etc.), we need to be kind anyway in order to make our school a safe and welcoming place for all.

Our students participated in Bullying Prevention month in several ways throughout the school:

- Classroom lessons: during classroom counseling lessons, students engage in discussion to understand what bullying looks like versus a “mean moment.” Students practice what to do if they see bullying behavior or experience bullying in order to be an UpStander.

- Be Kind Anyway challenge: students in all grade levels talked about what it means to be kind and how sometimes there are things that stand in our way of being kind. These things could be a bad day, someone was mean to you, mom or dad are gone, etc., but despite these negative things in our lives, we need to choose to be kind anyway. Students filled in their typical reason which makes remembering to be kind difficult on letters that spell “Be Kind Anyway” as a visual reminder to choose kindness instead of letting these things get in our way. Students decorated and wore bracelets which remind them they have joined the ”be Kind Anyway” challenge.

- Unity Day: students participated in Unity day by dressing in orange clothing and practicing the Red Ribbon Week daily challenge of choosing

kindness. Students and families were encouraged to practice one act of kindness at school and/or at home.

Second graders started their annual “Pet Pumpkin Project”. Each student receives a small pumpkin (grown by Casey Jarrell) and the students treat it like a pet. They name it, describe its personality, and take it with them everywhere they go. They record books read to their pumpkin, people the pumpkin meets, and places the pumpkin goes in their Pet Pumpkin Diary. They also answer pumpkin word problems and make a pumpkin post card. On the last day of the project, students tally up miles traveled, people met, and pages read with the pumpkin and practice place value skills with each number. Finally, they write a letter to their pumpkin to say farewell and relive all the fun memories they had together……because, hey, rot happens.

PTO Trick or Treat night was held Monday, October, 29th. Students and their families walked the halls in their costumes to enjoy treats from Achilles teachers and staff. We had a full house and handed out all our candy.



The fall Gifted Breakfast was held on Tuesday, October 30th. About 14 parents, with their children attended to hear a presentation by School

Psychologist Sarah Summers on motivation. Rhonda Taylor organized the breakfast and treated attendees to a delicious oatmeal bar.

Our Botetourt Bulldogs "adopted" an elementary school in NC to assist their students and families who were devastated by Hurricane Florence. One of our teachers previously taught at this school and delivered all the items that were donated. We have some very kind and generous members of our school community and we are fortunate that we can help others in need!

Our principal, Felicia Hudgins and one of our Kindergarten teachers, Joy Calloway, attended the Pre-K 3 conference at UVA to learn of existing programs and how the state is moving forward with VPI, Head Start, and other preschool programs

Our assistant principal, Melissa Mygas, and some of our teachers, Nancy Perdue, Karen Salmon, and Tracey Crowder, attended the Joy of Literacy conference at William and Mary to learn how to foster curiosity in the classroom and integrate science and social studies into the reading curriculum.

Rachel Downs, our school guidance counselor, attended the Virginia School Counselor Association’s Fall Conference in Hampton, Virginia this month and received professional development training on how to work with students who have experienced trauma.

Classroom teachers received training on how to administer and score the Devereux Student Strengths Assessment (DESSA) in order to gather data on the social and emotional needs of students in their classrooms.

Mrs. Sadler’s kindergarten class made crockpot pumpkin butter. We used standard (1/2 cup, ½ tsp, 1/8 tsp) measurement and non-standard measurement (sprinkled in extra cinnamon and sugar and added a little apple juice).

In First Grade, Mrs. Cheresnowsky had a great idea for Math on Halloween. Several of the

teachers hosted a Math Halloween rotation activity. Mrs. Cheresnowsky (Math specialist), Mrs. Daugherty (Math intervention), and Mrs. Mattern (special education teacher) each followed one of the classes to help support the students as they had fun with each activity. The students didn’t even notice that they were working on required First Grade skills!! A great time was had by students and adults!! Go Bulldogs!

During October, 1st graders learned and practiced using new map skills, including learning about climates of different areas and various types of landforms we have in the United States and in Virginia. We also explored the concepts of scientific investigation and the scientific method when we did our Pumpkin Elephant Toothpaste experiment.

Second grade shared their knowledge of United States citizens and symbols and learned about the importance and meaning of being patriotic and understanding various US symbols like the Washington Monument, American Flag, Statue of Liberty, and the Bald Eagle. With the help of our magnificent art teacher, Ms. Walter, we made clay bowls inscribed with our favorite US symbol. We also completed a candy tower STEM challenge and began sharing our prior knowledge of Native Americans as we move into a new unit for November.

Our fourth and fifth grade students who stay for after school art club had their last class at Arts on Main.

During the week of October 22nd-26th our Botetourt Bulldogs celebrated Kindness Week! Our guidance counselor, Ms. Downs, planned many activities for our students to participate in throughout the week. On Tuesday, October 23rd, our students took orange leaves and either wrote a sentence or drew a picture to show what they could do to stop bullying. We put all the leaves together to create a unity tree to show that we are united against bullying!

To boost morale and school climate teachers participated in a purple pumpkin scavenger hunt with the winner receiving 3 free jean days.

Botetourt received a Free Little Library courtesy of First Advantage Federal Credit Union in Newport News, Virginia. This library will serve as an opportunity for students to borrow and exchange books for free right outside of Botetourt!

October’s Citizens of the Month!

Kindergarten participated in an “in-house” pumpkin patch activity! The pumpkin patch was brought to Petsworth!

Students and their families sent in supplies to create 111 hygiene bags as a community service project to N.C. flood victims. Students also visited WXGM to discuss this project on the morning program.

Nikki Dee from Channel 6 News visited our 3rd-5th graders to talk about her job as a Meteorologist.

Our fourth grade students and staff attended the MWEE event at Beaverdam Park.

Mrs. Noel Cole, our Odyssey of the Mind Coach, has led tryouts, chosen her team and ready to begin working on their project for this year!

Mrs. Watkins and Mrs. Thomas coordinated 3 Open Gym Nights for families to engage and have fun with their children. 91 total participants attended over the course of the three events.

Mrs. Watkins, Mrs. Robins and Mrs. Thomas applied and received a Wellness Grant in the amount of $200.00

Our CEC, Mrs. Thomas is busily coordinating our first round of study trips!

Our Full Service School Counselor, Mrs. Butler Knight is currently working with 4 students.

Mrs. Balderson and Mrs. Busch hosted Coffee with Cathy and Tea with Tiffany on Friday, October 26th!

Coaching Days are successfully being held between our Reading and Math Specialists and classroom teachers 2x per month.

PreK and Kindergarten teachers successfully completed the Falls PALS assessments.

Kindergarten and 1st grades completed fall math screeners as well.

Mrs. Balderson and Mrs. Stacey Smith attended the Division VTSS meeting on October 4th.

Mrs. Noel Cole attended a Math conference with other division math coaches.

Mrs. Jennifer Worrell and Mrs. Sherry Collins attended the DOE workshop on the English Language Standards.

Mrs. Balderson and Mrs. Smith attended a training on the new DESSA behavior screening tool.

Many thanks to our Division Specialists, Mary Runnells, Melanie Jenkins and Jennifer McSweeney for conducting collaborative walkthroughs and helping to develop some plans for professional development.

Our PTA is hosting their annual book fair.

Mrs. Robins, in coordination with Arts on Main, is hosting early morning art classes.

Mrs. Watkins has kicked off her annual Morning Movers event, held every Wednesday morning. 50 student participants and 5 volunteers so far!

Our CEC, Mrs. Thomas, has arranged for 13 students to participate in our snack pack program provided by Salem United Methodist Church

Our staff is planning to attend the Professional Development on Diversity Day with presenter, Dr. Sampson-Jackson.

Students and staff honored Unity Day for the week of October 22nd by showing our school spirit!

Our K/1st grade teams hosted a lovely breakfast the morning of November 2nd.

The NJRTOC cadets visited Petsworth during lunchtime to mentor some students in grades K, 2 and 4 on Oct. 30th. We hope they will be able to have some return visits as our students enjoyed this interaction!

Recognitions

▪ Congratulations to sixth grader, Trenton Thomas, whose fifth grade artwork was selected

for the cover of the 2018 Guinea Jubilee program.

▪ Page’s first Parent Night for students identified for Gifted Services and their families took

place at Page on the evening of October 2. Much appreciation goes to Alice Chestnutt,

Patty Drake, and Sarah Clark (Page’s Gifted Contacts) for organizing the event and to Kim

Denham and Jordan Krevonick for their wonderful Naviance presentation. Families

feasted on pizza and cookies and spent valued time chatting with each other, with NJHS

representatives (Kim Pickett & Anne Wilkinson), and with Alison Armstrong about

Robotics. Students received grab bags for attending.

▪ Thanks to Dana Cooper and Brian Teucke for providing professional development to their

colleagues on October 2. Teachers learned strategies for student note-taking and

planning. We will certainly use the Concept and Comparison mapping ideas!

▪ Our October 5 PTA Activity Night was a success! Thank you to the many parents and staff

members who participated in chaperoning the event for our students. Thank you to these

staff members for participating: Jaci Glaser, Kierstin Wilson, Kim Pickett, James Cook,

Bryan Hill, Trish Wood, Michele Richmond, Kenny Schulz, Alison Armstrong, Allen

Koederitz, Shanna Merritt, and Jesse Dutton.

▪ On Saturday, October 27th, Page students in grades 7th and 8th gathered to audition for District

Workshop Chorus. Students warmed up, loaded buses and headed to Grafton Middle School

where they did individual auditions based on the three middle school voice parts: soprano, alto

and baritone. Over 600 students auditioned from Grafton, York, James City, Newport News,

Hampton and Gloucester schools. Of the 600, 130 were chosen for the select District Workshop

Chorus. Of the 130, 19 are Page M.S. students. Students who will participate and be recognized in

District Workshop Chorus are : Baritones- James Avella, D’Mori Garcia, Matthew Garver, Owen

Hogge, Mikey Little, Sterling Owens, Isaiah Pryor, Jacob Smith, Jamie Smith, Alto- Taryn Legg,

Danah Melo, Kailey Ormsby, Hailey Pagador, Grace Spaulding, Soprano- Lucy Alexander,

Madison Altemus, Trinnity Harris, Kendall Pratt, Destiny Wheeler. The District Workshop Chorus

event will take place on February 8th and 9th, 2019 at Hampton High School.

▪ Thank you to Shannon Kerr and KC Woller for assisting Dr. McMahon with parent training

as we plan our November rollout of Chromebooks to our sixth graders.

▪ October was VSDB Bullying Prevention Month. Page engaged students with “Start with

Hello” week. We covered uniqueness and difference with 6th, 7th, and 8th graders in our

Advisory blocks.

▪ In November, Page will participate in Kindness Week activities. From November 12 – 16,

students and staff will engage in activities prompted by United Way. Thank you to Jordan

Krevonick and Anne Wilkinson for assisting with this organization.

▪ Sixth Grade Chromebooks! Page sponsored 5 parent information sessions to provide

parents the information and details they need to provide permission for the loaning of a

Chromebook to each of our sixth graders. The loaning of the devices and training in their

use begins the third week in November.

▪ 8th Grade Field Trip: On October 25 and 26th, Page 8th graders participated in a field

trip/visit and tour to Rappahannock Community College on the Glenns Campus. Students

were given tours of five potential community college programs: Workforce, Engineering,

Biology, Technology, Nursing and were guided through many of the free resources of the

library. We are grateful to Dr. Chuck Wagner for facilitating communication with the

college and to Hutt Williams and Abdul-Malik Basheer for helping to coordinate the

event. Final thanks go to Shanna Merritt and Sarah Clark for organizing the event on the

school’s end.

▪ 7th Grade students participated in multiple Chesapeake Bay Foundation field trips

throughout the month of October. Thank you to Judy Green and Sherry Rollins for

sponsoring and chaperoning these trips.

▪ PTA Fundraising has begun! Our group is using Cherrydale this Fall, and the orders are

coming in – thank you to our friends and families for ordering!

▪ The following Page students are participating in “Once on this Island, Jr” with Mrs. Karen

Peasley Middle School and the Peasley Peacemakers received the “Start with Hello” Grand Prize Award from Sandy Hook Promise.

The Peasley Middle School Field Hockey team finished the regular season 9-1. The Tri-Rivers District tournament starts the week of November 5.

The SCA sponsored Spirit Week October 15-19.

Communications to families from Community Engagement include: 11 Facebook posts, one email reminder and one E-Bulletin about school events, information and announcements.

CE held 2 Student Book Club meetings in partnership with Gloucester County Public Library with 11 students in attendance. CEC was awarded a grant from the Celebrate Caleb Healthy Living Fund for the Food Challenge class to be offered in partnership with Virginia Cooperative Extension, Gloucester office.

Community Engagement assisted with coordination of transportation for SPED study trip to Belmont Pumpkin Farm on October 23 and a trip to VIMS for a 7th grade class on Oct 30. We are preparing for an upcoming trip on Nov 19th to a Chamber Theater production in Richmond for 8th grade.

We had assistance from 3 tutors for a total of 28 hours and were assisted by volunteers throughout the building for a total of 25 hours.

History Civics is finishing the unit on Political Process. We have been evaluating media and candidates as we

approach the election. Model UN has been working on solving the conflict in the Baltic region. Students are also preparing

to compete in New York this spring.

Science The NERRS Estuarine Education Program, based at VIMS in Gloucester Point, is working with 7th

grade classes from Peasley Middle School. Marine science educators will be working with Ms. Sowers and Mr. Jeffrey’s to use Chesapeake Bay topics to address 7th grade SOL’s.

As part of our unit on Experimental design, we are learning how to use scientific equipment to collect data and then analyze our findings. We used the balances to measure mass of sugar in common foods and discussed obesity and regulations. For the lab activity, students had to guess how much sugar they thought were in their favorites then learn how to read the nutrition label and finally they had to measure the correct mass of sugar out in petri dishes. A few other activities we did during our studies- we have measured earthworms, students played metric guessing games, and students completed an experiment where they flew helicopters when we learned about maple seeds, samaras.

Mrs. Driver’s 6th Grade Science class performed a Project-Based Assessment they had to calculate the

number of Protons, Electrons, and Neutrons in certain elements. Then they had to make a model of the atomic structure.

Mrs. Bogue’s 8th grade Science class has been busy!!

Cups: In Mrs. Bogue’s 8th grade science class at Peasley, Michelle Bracken and Kara Wallace work as a team to stack the red cups without touching them. Gum: Students had to design and test their own experiment about who can blow the biggest bubble.

Density: Students had to measure the volume and mass of a chocolate bar to see if the density of an object changes if you change its size. Change: Students had to make s’mores to explain the differences between chemical and physical changes.

Language Arts Mrs. Hart’s 7th Grade Language Arts is studying Science Fiction. We are reading: The City of Ember in

regular classes, in Advanced LA we are doing Literature Circles that include the books: Divergent, Starters, Silver, Hunger Games, The Girl Who Could Fly, Maze Runner, Ungifted, and Legend.

Mrs. Hart’s EIB is reading All of the Above and making a Tetrahedron. This is a cross-curricular

project with math SOL’s.

Math Mr. Nelson’s Geometry students performed Dance, Dance Revolution to

learn about angle pairs that are created when a transversal intersects parallel lines.

Performing Arts Five chorus students will be representing Peasley at District Chorus this year. Field Trips Students from the 7th grade went on a field trip to the VIMS campus in order to investigate the

shallow water habitat, catch estuarine animals and study water quality on October 30. Another group of 7th graders will be going to VIMS in the spring.

Recognitions

▪ GHS has been awarded the Purple Star School Award!!!! Thank you to Senior Chief

Grant, Chief Williams and Ms. Rilee for your help in getting the components together

for our application! Our military community was celebrated at the last home football

game on Friday, Nov. 2 with free entrance to the game as well as recognition for their

service. American Legion Post 75 donated flags for the military members present.

▪ The GHS Choir students attended District Choir auditions on 11/2, and 34 students

were accepted to represent our school at the District Choir event at Hampton High

School on February 8 & 9. Those students are also eligible to go on to All-State

Auditions on February 7

▪ Mrs. Tozier and Mrs. Kladler have been using small group instruction to serve

Geometry inclusion Classes.

▪ Mr. Coleman and Mr. Winkler gave lessons about suicide prevention in health classes.

▪ Mrs. Post and Mr. Morande use games as a method to review concepts in an Algebra I

inclusion class

▪ Mr. Parzanese’s students have been building bridges in Construction Technology

classes.

▪ Good luck to GHS Field Hockey going on to state competition and GHS Football headed

to regional competition.

▪ The Multiple Disabilities class is selling bracelets. Purchasing these bracelets assists this

class with their community curriculum based instruction trips.

▪ Senior class is hosting the faculty and staff Chili Luncheon on Nov. 6th as way to say

thank you to all for a great start to the school year.

▪ 1st Semester Economics and Personal Finance students are participating in the Stock

Market Game. The Stock Market Game is an online simulation of the global capital

markets that engage students in grades 4 – 12 in the world of economics, investing,

and personal finance. Students compete against each other throughout the states. The

game will end in December and we will be able to see how well our teams did against

other students in the state.


Coming Soon ▪ GHS Theatre Duke Troupe is working hard to prepare for their dinner theatre with the

production of “End of Civilization As We Know It!” on Thursday, November 15. Dinner

will be at 5:30pm and the show will be at 7pm. Come out for dinner and a show.

Technology – Jim Brogan Copier availability is an ongoing priority. Jim Maloney is typically responding to copier issues within 4 hours of notification.

The Middle School Grade 6 - One to One Initiative to provide each rising 6th grader a Chromebook is on track. The middle schools have assumed responsibility for hosting parent information sessions and testing internet filtering when outside the school network. The plan is to begin issuing Chromebooks to students this month. The Technology Department is piloting a product called iBoss, which offers greater monitoring capabilities, to beef up the filtering of these Chromebooks. If the pilot is successful, this service may be expanded in FY2020.

For Fall 2018, as an enhancement to PowerSchool Teacher Gradebook Pro, we are adding PowerSchool Learning/Unified Classroom, which integrates our existing Student Information System, Gradebook, and Parent and Student Portals, as well as builds on the use of Google Classroom to enhance instruction as a Learning Management System. The PowerSchool Learning/Unified Classroom was activated on August 27th. The ITRTs are working in their assigned schools to assist teachers with the new program and to ensure the gradebooks are properly storing grades.

Matt Bychowski is doing an excellent job managing the division’s computer networks. We are working with ESI to implement a new product called Clearpass, which will provide detailed visibility on all devices connecting to our wired and wireless networks. The product will also automate the process for individuals joining our wireless network, and will assign appropriate content filtering based on how one signs onto the network. This product should be fully implemented by January of 2019.

The Technology Department, as of 11/1/18, has completed 1140 tickets since July 1, 2018. We currently have 244 open tickets. These tickets are being addressed on a daily basis. A significant number of tickets are related to aging LCD projectors and obsolete Smartboards. Since last summer, over 85 classroom projectors have been replaced (roughly 25% of all classrooms). This represents a little over a $40,000 investment in projectors. Without continued funding for replacing classroom projectors, we will not be able to fix or replace these projectors. We have exhausted all funding for replacement of projectors for the year. Replacement Smartboards would require roughly $4000 to $5000 per device.

Payroll 1. Hosted a “Hybrid Bootcamp” sponsored by The Standard – Oct. 9 2. Submitted third quarter reporting to Virginia Employment Commission, IRS and Social Security

Annual United Way Campaign

Gloucester County Public Schools will be participating in its 20th United Way Campaign this fall. The dates of the campaign will be from November 5 through November 30, with pledged giving through payroll deduction beginning in January 2019. Craig Smith will be coordinating the campaign at the district level; this is his 16th year serving in that capacity. $4,212 was raised for the United Way Campaign in 2017; $340 of that amount was for the Gloucester County Public Schools Educational Foundation, Inc. Since 1999, Gloucester County Public Schools employees have raised over $173,000 for the United Way.

Gloucester County Public Schools Educational Foundation, Inc. Annual Campaign

Gloucester County Public Schools will be participating in its 16th annual fundraising campaign, concurrent with the United Way. Campaign this fall. The dates of the campaign will also be from November 5 through November 30, with pledged giving through payroll deduction beginning in January 2019. $1,582 was raised for the Educational Foundation in 2017 ($340 of that amount was via the United Way Campaign. Since 2003, Gloucester County Public Schools employees have raised over $50,000 for the through this annual campaign.
