Dear academic comrades, we are in a challenging and transformational time wherein technology advances in leaps and bounds and maneuvers our everyday lives in unprecedented ways. You have entrusted us at the ETC with the task of bridging the gap made by technological developments. In Educational Services Section, we are privileged to be part of a noble service to our students, that is providing the educational materials that they need. We are also happy to support every event of the college. As we do our duties, we are reminded that the success of one is the success of all. With the proliferation of technology, many have thought that the use and importance of libraries have declined tremendously. Being a librarian, confronted with this changing scenario, I tend to take it on as a great challenge than to give up and blame things on circumstances. I believe that it is our duty and responsibility to future generations to keep the library culture alive, to keep the students onboard and to encourage, engage and imbibe in them reading habits and training them in utilizing all library resources. To do this, we need to create in them awareness of the importance of libraries through different tools. One of the media to reach and connect with all our students is this magazine: ETC Connect. Greetings!

This issue of the ETC CONNECT aims to provide you with some practical tips and means to tackle some light issues that you may have faced or heard about already. I hope this issue will help you to get some fresh ideas and do-it-yourself techniques.

We’re at once delighted and a little anxious about this latest issue of ETC CONNECT: delighted because we were able to put things together and come up with some articles with do-it-yourself techniques; anxious because we don’t know how people will receive it. It would be too presumptuous on our part if we say that all of you are eagerly looking forward to reading our articles. We write not because we are acclaimed writers or researchers or techno-expert wannabes. Then what is it that inspires us to write? As technical staff who often receive queries about varied technical matters, we thought it would be good to share what we know about troubleshooting with our colleagues.

SPWe often hear people commend others for their hobbies, interests and passions. The passion they have arouses in them a strong desire to realize their potential. Being passionate means loving life and loving what you do in life and continually striving to nurture and improve on it. Being passionate is not only about knowing our responsibilities and living up to them, but it also concerns our feelings. Being passionate gives a strong sense of purpose to everything we do. The excitement we feel about achieving our goals gives meaning to our lives. Knowing our purpose in life directs and motivates us onto a life path which culminates in us realizing our dreams.

It is important for us to figure out what our gifts and interests are and what we really want to do with our lives, because only then can we become the best that we can be. We need to ask ourselves what it is that makes us want to jump out of bed early in the morning ready to face whatever lies ahead of us for the rest of the day, and keeps us pressing in on in life, even when everything falls apart. Once we identify our life’s passion we are ready to pursue our aims, face anything that comes our way, and do everything we can to obtain our goals.

We all have that ‘something’ that we use as our driving

force in order to overcome problems. It enables us to do

our best as we face everyday issues. You take it, you own it,

and you embrace it and then use whatever it is as your strategy to

make your life better than yesterday, the best it can be today, and the very

best it can be tomorrow.

Each of us has something to share on this matter. For myself, I have learned many things

after many years of working with people from diverse cultural backgrounds and personalities who have studied

different disciplines.

My own experience may not be as rich as others but I would like to share with my readers what I have learned from the people I have encountered in my personal and professional life, and through reading motivational and inspirational stories of different people.

The reason well-known personalities have met with fame and success is that they were willing to persevere. One such person, who became well-known, not only because of his inventions and the patents under his name, but also for his attitude in dealing with failures, is none other than Thomas Alva Edison. If you want to give up in life, always remember this man who was frustrated at every turn and tried a hundred times or more before he could get his various inventions to work. His legacy does not start and end with the invention of the light bulb, great achievement though that be, but by his sharing with us the lessons he has learned from his experiences. He once said, “Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time.”

In more recent time we can reflect on the journey of the illustrious author, J.K. Rowling, of Harry Potter fame, who encountered so many setbacks before she finally achieved the celebrity status she now enjoys. As well as her books she was able to transpose into an eloquent writer of some of the most loved movies ever which were based on her writing. People appreciate not only the hero of her fictional stories but also her own personal journey.

We all love stories that have themes i.e. from ‘rags to riches’, from ‘hatred to love’, from ‘struggles to victory’. This is because we always look forward to happy endings and new beginnings. We, too, want to succeed in all areas of our life. We work for it. We never settle for mediocrity. We utilize what we have and nurture it. Then, little by little, we achieve our goals.

Let me relate this in to what we encounter in our everyday work. Maybe we have some technical issues with something at work that are seemingly impossible to solve. Yet we don’t just give up; we try again… and again. If after trying different things repeatedly the problem still persists, we ask for assistance from colleagues and then try other things until we get the desired resolution to the problem.

We should show great perseverance and learn from great people who stick to their goals even when the going gets tough and in the face of opposition from others.

Push until something happens. We don’t stop, we don’t give up, we continue. It is just like the attitude of a child who, until it gets what it wants, will keep on trying and never stop.

Persistence plays an important role in the pursuit of excellence. It involves an ADRI (Approach, Deployment, Result and Improvement) format. You cannot just start on a course of action only to give up somewhere down the line. You must stick to it and finish the race, get the result you want, and even evaluate your successful outcome for possible improvements.

It is just like the slogan of a famous sportswear company- “JUST DO IT.” When you start on something, make sure it gets done. ‘Getting it done’ entails having the same positive mindset that you had when you first started your project, even though you are faced with challenges, difficulties, and reproaches. It is all about making the necessary sacrifices, not only for the sake of obtaining satisfactory results, but also for you to be able to properly develop your own strengths, ingenuity and flexibility.

Imagine yourself chasing your dreams or climbing the highest mountain. If you don’t persist, then your dreams will remain just that, only dreams. But persistence will turn mere possibilities into realities.

Persistence is the 3rd and final ‘P’ in achieving success. Realizing our hopes is all about being consistent and adaptable, and above all remaining steadfast, having that unwavering inner strength that makes us want to persist- to always go on in life and to achieve one’s goals.

he Educational Technologies Center (ETC)

Nowadays, we have become reliant on the

Internet and people are hooked on to it,

especially students.

The Internet has

become one of the

greatest discoveries

in the world that

will continue to

progress and expand

its contents. It has

changed the way

we interact and

communicate with

each other. It has a lot

of advantages when

used appropriately.

However, the reality

of the situation is

that without proper

guidance, the internet becomes a very dangerous platform

that could do worse things than one can ever imagine. It can

corrupt the minds of people, especially minors.

As agents of technology, we are not only here to support

and serve our students for their technical concerns but we

are here to protect them from any harm that technology can

cause. We are here to provide them guidance and awareness

on how to be safe and secure in the cyberspace.

From previous statistics in the Sultanate, we see that users

of the Internet have

constantly increased

from 2007-2016. The

trend is constant and

is expected to be like

this in the coming

years, too.

The Sultanate has

many initiatives

for students to use

technology as a

tool for learning

and we support all

these initiatives. As

a part of the annual

program, ETC

provides in-house training for staff who are our partners in

helping us in our endeavors to educate our students about

Net safety and protecting their online accounts. ETC also

conducts several training-workshop and coordinates with

academic departments in providing orientation to students.

Here in the Sultanate, there is an organization OCERT

(Oman National Computer Emergency Readiness Team) that

provides education and awareness about cyber safety. “It

was established to face these challenges and to serve as the

trusted focal point of contact for any ICT security incident in

the Sultanate, focusing on cyber safety and security and to

serve all information technology users in Oman, whether from

the government sector or private sector or individuals,” (Dr.

Salim Sultan Al-Ruzaiqi, OCERT ITA).

The OCERT was established on April 2010. Their vision is

to provide world-class cyber security capability whereby

computer and the Internet users feel safe and secure using

Information Communication Technology (ICT). Furthermore,

their mission is to build cyber-security capabilities to increase

the capacity of security incident detection and emergency

responses to such incidents. Moreover, the organization

ensures cyber-security awareness to the public and private

sector organizations, to the citizens and the residents of

Oman.

To all the Internet users young and old, here are some practical tips to ensure your security and protection in cyberspace:

• Don’t post any personal information online – like your

address, email address or mobile number. Don’t post

anything that reveals your address or whereabouts.

• Think carefully before posting pictures or videos of yourself. Once you place a picture of yourself online most people can see it and they may be able to download it; it’s not just yours anymore.

• Keep your privacy settings as high as possible. Always check it first before posting anything. Your setting will let you determine who can view and check the information you post.

• Never give out your passwords.

• Don’t befriend people you don’t know.

• Don’t meet up with people you meet online. Speak to your parents or guardians if people that you met online, have asked you to do so.

• Remember that not everyone online is who they say they are. Be vigilant!

• Think carefully about what you say before you post something online.

• Respect other people’s views. You do not need to be rude, even if you don’t agree.

• If you see something online that makes you feel uncomfortable, unsafe or worried, leave the website, turn off your computer and tell a trusted adult immediately.


On a technical note, ensure that you have an up-to-date anti-virus software, and be aware of any social engineering schemes and how to avoid them. Being conscious of potential risks online, will definitely help in preventing and protecting you from nasty things happening.

ow does social media affect education? The

impact of social media on students has both

advantages and disadvantages. As learners

and educators, we are already aware of this,

but it is good to be reminded in order for us to deliver a

healthier learning environment for the students. Knowing

about the effects will also let us maneuver the ‘not-so-good’

effects into beneficial ones.

Social media has become the melting point of communication

and collaboration among people all around the world. Its pop-

ularity has depended on the evolution of new technologies

that aid us to express our ideas and share them with the world

without much difficulty.

Some of the social media that have become immensely

popular in the present era are Facebook, Twitter, Instagram,

Snapchat and so many others. They have become platforms

for everyone to post their thoughts, ideas, and feelings.

Social media developers continue to expand their services,

offer many new features everyday that attract users to sign in

and consume their time using their devices daily for hours. It

has become a way of life for most if not everyone.

To counter the side effects of the social media, developers and programmers have come up with brilliant ideas to use social media as a tool for learning in the field of education.

Also, as agents of learning and education, we are responsible

for providing awareness to all our students. Subsequently,

we need to remind them how to utilize SMTs in the correct,

effective and most efficient ways possible in order to minimize

or even eliminate their bad effects. Being cognizant of the

risks and vulnerabilities that our students are exposed to, it

is imperative that these tools be utilized further in a positive

way. It is up to us to ensure that social media will not turn into

a social dysfunction.

ETC would like to share some SMTs for education that may

help to deliver all the topics and lessons to students. Online

resources and tools might be overwhelming because there

are so many options available. However, it is worthwhile to

attempt using some new ones that may increase the stu-

dents’ and teachers’ collaboration. In addition, this may help

improve students’ performance in the class.

research papers. The company’s mission is to

accelerate the world’s research.

Academics use Academia.edu to share their

research, monitor the analyses around the impact of

their research, and track the research of academics

they follow. 49,710,638 academics have signed up

to Academia.edu, adding 17,863,155 papers and

2,036,769 research interests. Academia.edu attracts

over 36 million unique visitors a month.

Building a website for classroom does not require

an advanced technical skill. WordPress has created

readily available templates to be used by teachers.

Try the website and you will be amazed by the result.

Though we have presented these 3 SMTs, teachers

should still check the appropriateness of the materials

and resources before recommending them to

students. As we live in a diverse cultural background,

it is imperative to check before recommending these

SMTs to the students to ensure that contents are

acceptable according to the norms, values, and

standards of the community where we live.

Shinas College of Technology started

using Sharepoint last September 2016

as a new platform for collaboration.

It has opened up more opportuni-

ties for the staff to exchange teaching

and learning resources without thinking

of using other storage media, share

ideas, foster transparency and open

communication among committees

and provide a fast and readily avail-

able online tool.

Sharepoint is integrated in Office 365

E-mail that provides users a tool for col-

laboration and sharing of documents

that can be accessed online. It is now

Step 6: In “Links”, press “ShCT Internal Collaboration Platform” link to open the site.

Step 8: To access a particular app in a sub site, press the app.

Step 11: Once the sub site/app is followed, the icon will be shaded as shown below. Press to close the site.

Step 12: In the app’s “Sites” view, all followed apps/sub sites will be shown under “Following” for easy navigation. Click a “followed” app to navigate to it.

Once redirected to the “followed” app, “Activity” view will be shown. Explore also other tabs like “Files”, “Lists”, & “Site Navigation”.

he Calendar in Office 365 is packed with full of useful features. Scheduling meetings

is made easy and can be done with just a few clicks. You can add an agenda and other documents to the invite, and invitees are then notified by email.

When you use the Scheduling Assistant, any clashes with invitee’s shared calendars are made visible to you while you are setting up your meeting, enabling you to pick the

best time for maximum attendance. You can see this on the screenshot of Scheduling Assistant in action. Notice that the calendars of invitees are displayed side by side and any overlapping appointments are shown when you enter the date and time for your meeting;

Attendees are prompted to accept or decline the invitation, and also to give a reason for declining.

You can book a room for your meeting and any resources you

might need. These will be reserved and shown as unavailable to anyone else who tries to book them during your meeting time slot.

‘Morphing technology’ is a ‘transformation of technology’

and talk about it. We often hear slogans of companies of various products like “Connecting people,” “Touching Lives,” “Making Difference,” “In Touch with Tomorrow,” etc. Why are these catchy phrases used? Is it simply because they

want to attract consumers to buy and try their product? Like technology in every sense, it creates a great impact on everyone and aims at streamlining all processes which is why people are drawn and hooked up.

When internet connections improved and handheld phones became smartphones, a lot of social media platforms and thousands of Apps surfaced on the World Wide Web. If we trace back we learn that it all started from a simple electronic chip. This evolved later to integrated circuits and then to nanotechnology. After nanotechnology came picotechnology. The next step will be femtotechnology which is not available yet, but who can predict what the future holds. One invention leads to another and then to another and the loop never ends.

Though 2020 is just two years from now, it is ample enough time for new inventions to make an appearance. By then, self-driven cars may finally hit the market, Internet of Things (IoT) as we know now may be replaced by an improved version or may disappear altogether and be replaced with a better technology, genomic technology might gain popularity in the treatment of life threatening diseases, 5G technology could evolve and so on. The possibilities are endless.

Some things that are just imagined of at present will became so real that even the predictions and opinions of some scholars will not be good enough to do justice to what ‘morphing’ technology really is.

Catapulting the future of technology, some of the imaginary which were just seen in sci-fi movies before, have now started to become realities. For example, robots in the past were amazing fictional creations seen in the I-Robot movie, but now they have become part of real life and the production of robots is increasing. Flying cars shown in the movie ‘Flubber’ and even Time Machines may become a reality in the future! Whew!! Technological development is unbelievably, faster than the Fast and Furious. Seriously, we are in the ‘TECHRA’ (technological era). I just coined this word. Who knows, I might get lucky and this word might gain popularity and become part of everyday language. On a more serious note, let us take a look at what future technologies might evolve over the next 2 to 5 years.

Let us take a look at Gartner’s top 10 near-term predictions for Tech written by the Senior Editor of Computerworld magazine, Patrick Thibodeau on October 21, 2016. A small note before going through the top ten list, Gartner is an American research and advisory firm providing information technology related insight for IT and other business leaders located across the world.

1. By 2020, 100 million consumers will shop in augmented reality environments.

AR will be “overlaying data on top of environments,” said Gartner analyst Daryl Plummer. For instance, when you walk into a grocery store, “all the data about the different items will be floating in the air in front of those items,” he said. The bulky and boxy glasses that customers need to see the augmented reality at the store will get more fashionable

and will be easier to wear. AR also will be used in online shopping.

2. By 2020, “the average person will have more conversations with bots than with their spouse.”

More practically for IT managers, what this shift to voice means is that in four years, 30% of web browsing sessions will be done without a screen. Users of Amazon’s Alexa voice service, which comes with its Echo device, are already doing this.

The growing reliance of voice communications to interact with the internet raises big questions, said Aren Cambre, the web technologies team leader at Southern Methodist University,

“We have been thinking of visual representations of data,” said Cambre, “but how will these “nonvisual-interaction” methods of getting services work?”

“Let’s say a student wants to check his grades through Alexa. How do we authenticate the student?” Cambre said. “There are some tricky questions and important questions” that have to be answered.

3. By 2019, 20 percent of major brands will abandon their mobile apps.

According to Plummer companies will stop using apps as the first point of marketing for their brand, because Apps aren’t producing the results businesses thought they would.

“There are so many apps in the app stores,” said Plummer, that “it’s very difficult amongst all the noise to find the apps that are really great. The cost is still higher than the benefit.”

“Instead, businesses will turn to the mobile web or will use approaches such as “Progressive Web Apps,” which Google is doing. When you connect to a website using a mobile device, a mobile framework is downloaded to the client and begins to run, and the next time you connect, it runs instantly and updates will be automatic”, said Plummer

Apps won’t disappear, but “we’re in the post-app era,” he said.

4. Businesses will use algorithms to “positively alter the behavior of billions of global workers.”

These systems will work like a virtual assistant, but will use behavioral and psychological knowledge to help employees make appropriate decisions.

5. By 2022, there will be a blockchain services business that will be worth at least $10 billion.

Blockchain, a public ledger of financial transactions, will improve and lead to development of “large c o m m u n i t y - s h a r i n g transactions.”

Because it helps to increase transparency and trust in

transactions, blockchain will lead to development of large “ecosystems,” or business networks that will use it.

6. By 2021, 20 percent of all activities in which an individual engages will involve at least one of the top seven digital giants.

Those companies are Google, Apple, Facebook, Amazon in the U.S., and Chinese firms Baidu, Alibaba and Tencent. It means consumers will be more reliant on the services of large digital services businesses than ever before – in short these companies will become as essential as utilities.

7. Spending on innovation won’t be cheap. Gartner estimates that for every $1

earmarked for innovation, it will take another $7 to execute. Why? Because data centers aren’t modernized, and new and unfamiliar technologies may be needed, such as machine learning.

As per Plummer, new technologies will mean that skills also will have to be improved.

About HandBrake

2. Once you’ve downloaded the HandBrake installer, simply double click to run it. If in case, you are unable to see it in your taskbar, you can go to Downloads folder by clicking Windows Start button located at the lowest left corner of your computer screen. Click C o m p u t e r and click D o w n l o a d s folder. Then, double click on the Handbrake to start the installation..

3. Click Next button as shown in the image.

You will find shortcuts for launching HandBrake placed on both the Windows Desktop and Start Menu.

Note: When installing on Windows 8 or 10 with Windows SmartScreen enabled, you may see a message indicating that the HandBrake installer is not recognized by Windows.HandBrake is not “signed” by Microsoft. This message doesn’t mean anything is wrong; rather, it indicates that HandBrake is not part of Microsoft’s paid program to validate Windows applications.

By selecting More info, you will be able to select Run anyway to continue the installation

ETC offers MS Office Application Training to the Community

As a way of giving back to the community for the warm support they are extending to the college, the Educational Technologies Center (ETC) recently concluded a 20-Hour Office Application Training (MS Word, Excel and Powerpoint) from February 4 to 8, 2018, held at Shinas College of Technology (ShCT) E-Library.

A total of 15 participants from neighboring Wilayats completed the Local Community Course, handled by Mr. Abdulrahman Al Hamadani and Mr. Sidney Souribio.

Primarily, the training was aimed at providing basic understanding of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft PowerPoint by giving real work and scenario-based hands-on activities. It also provided the participants the ‘learning while doing’ concepts of office application and publishing.

The participants expressed profound gratitude to the organizers for offering the course. They added that it was indeed helpful to them.

ETC conducts Trainings for IT Students

Committed to provide a “Service You Can Trust,” ETC conducted three different trainings for IT students on November 23, 28, and 30, 2017.

On November 23, ETC technician Mr. Melvin Belarmino trained IT students on Active Directory and DNS at the ShCT E-library. Participants of the training were given the step-by-step hands-on guide on AD and DNS.

ETC technician Mr. Felman Garcia trained 15 IT students on Database Recovery at the Computer Lab A-149 on November 28, 2017. Students were oriented on the different types and ways of data recovery as well as the different prevention techniques for data loss.

ETC orients new staff on its servicesThe Educational Technologies Center (ETC) conducted an orientation program for the new ShCT staff at the Computer Lab, October 17, 2017. ETC organized the two-hour orientation program that introduced its services, especially the on-line and support services, to the new ShCT staff. ETC technicians Mr. Humaid Al-Mamari, Mr. Sidney Souribio, Mr Melvin Belarmino, Mr. Felman Garcia, and Mr. Ajith Kuriakose conducted the said program. The ETC technicians

discussed the different features of the College E-mail, SharePoint, Staff Portal services, ESS Online System and Policies, ETC Online Smart Support and the basics of ActivBoard. Attended by the new staff from the different departments, the program is included in the ETC Development Plan for Academic Year 2017-2018. Apart from sharing its technical knowledge and skills, ETC aims to continually provide the necessary development programs that will help maximize the utilization of technology and educational resources in the college.

The Educational Technologies Center (ETC) conducted two sessions of training on using the Ultra Short Throw (UST) projector at Room F-001, English Language Center(ELC) Building on October 4, 2017.

The participants were taught how to use several features of the UST projector, such as using interactive pen, playing videos and audios, uploading presentations and workarounds on using USB flashdrive without using a computer or a laptop.

ESS Staff deliver training on InDesign, Photography for Staff

The Educational Services Section (ESS) in alignment with the Staff Professional Development Plan for 2016-2017, delivered a training on InDesign and Basic Photography for the staff on March 9, 2017. The trainings were conducted by Mr. Joel Palad and Mr. Gary Olfindo both ESS staff.

Mr. Olfindo imparted the Basic Photography training and discussed the basic feature of DSLR cameras. Other topics discussed were: basic photography equipment, areas of photography, proper handling, camera exploration, Q & info button, mode dials, shutter, ISO and aperture functions as well as focus points.

The InDesign training workshop aimed to impart knowledge on the use of the Adobe InDesign in creating lay-out for magazines, newsletters and brochures as well as other promotional materials.

Among the topics discussed at the InDesign training were: creating and modifying pages/spread, hiding, applying images and plotting to spread, locking and hiding object using layer tool, adding text and applying effects, inserting shapes, inserting paragraph using text on path and exporting the project as a book/publication

These trainings were conducted in order to adhere to the projection plan of the ETC-ESS in providing training and workshops to all staff.

do at the start of a day or before

retiring to bed at night is to check

text messages and emails. This has

become a part of daily routine. To put

it in a nutshell, most of our chores and

activities are orchestrated to what is

received over electronic mail. But have

you ever thought that our email inboxes

can be a reflection of our personalities?

Even though some email management

techniques are entirely a knowledge

and skills-based issue, many email

users don’t even know about spam

filters, folders or even the location of

the delete button. With most people,

email management boils down to some

personality-related behaviors.

This article is a humble attempt to

make a study of how individuals

manage their email inboxes based on

their personalities. Though it sounds

somewhat of a cliché, this will help us to

better understand our co-workers,

managers, and even our friends. Of

course, it is impossible to look at a

colleague’s inbox to find out whether

he/she is doing things effectively or if

he/she is suffering from some emotional

problems. Email management strategy

depends heavily on the nature of work,

how the daily processes are being

carried out, as well as the standard flow

of instructions in the offices.

Some online articles on psychology

and technology have yielded some

surprising insights into the connection

between email habits and personality

traits. There are a lot of articles that deal

with various personality traits, but we

will focus on three of the most common

and understandable personality traits

(based on an online article by Business

Insider):

THE FILER/DELETERThe Filer/Deleter: this type of person

is the one who sees a message and

takes action immediately. In a proactive

approach, he/she reads and responds or

takes action on whatever is mentioned

in the email. Once the email has been

read and responded to, he/she either

deletes the email or archives the email

in a specific folder. Basically his/her

email inbox count hovers around zero

because he/she immediately deals with

every email received.

According to Larry Rosen, Ph.D., research

psychologist and author of ‘iDisorder:

Understanding Our Obsession With

Technology and Overcoming its Hold on

Us’, the filer/delete makes sure that he/

she is in absolute control over his/her

inbox as he/she feels secure only when

things are in order. A bunch of unread

messages would trigger a negative

reaction. What goes beyond his/her

reach and domination triggers his/her

personality to react negatively. “A huge,

exploding inbox releases stress-based

neurotransmitters, like cortisol, which

make them anxious,” Rosen says.

Keeping a tidy inbox quells that anxiety,

at least temporarily.

A lot of managers and well-known

businessmen fall into this category. Larry

Rosen admits that he too falls into this

category. Away from his inbox for too

long makes him nervous and anxious.

He wants to control and monitor things

and keep them in the order that he

is used to. Based on his findings, Dr.

Rosen believes that his individual email-

management strategy comes down to

his desire for control. A lot of people

are at ease with messy and disorderly

houses, desks, workplace or inbox

but the filers/deleters would go crazy

over messy and disorganized things.

“They need an external way to have

control over the world,” Rosen says,

and sticking to an inbox-management

system fulfills their constant need for

order.

THE SAVERThe Saver: This type of person is

almost the same as the filer/deleter,

but this type will have a few unread

emails in his/her inbox and he/she rarely

deletes messages after reading them.

The messages are retained for future

reference.

According to Pamela Rutledge, Ph.D.,

Director of the Media Psychology

Research Center, there are a few

potential explanations for this kind of

saving behavior. One is perfectionism:

“Perfectionists save read emails with

the idea that they will get to them

[eventually], these same people will

have a to-do list that is so long it can’t

possibly be useful”.

This type of person is the kind who

saves all his/her clothes in the back of

the closet even when he/she has a lot

of new ones, thinking that he/she might

need those clothes someday for some

reason.

The savers save the emails thinking that

they might use those emails or email

addresses in the future. Rutledge also

theorizes that deleting emails feels too

risky for savers. “Some people save

read emails for the sense of security

In our organization savers are

predominant, we read and take actions

on every email that we received but we

don’t delete the emails. Read emails

are archives in the inboxes without

proper indexing or filing. Emails are

recalled as the need arises or if there are

documentation requirements.

THE IGNORERThe Ignorer: This type of person ignores or

leaves a lot of emails unread in his inbox.

It may sound adverse but according

to Ron Friedman, Ph.D., author of

‘The Best Place to Work: The Art and

Science of Creating an Extraordinary

Workplace’, keeping hundreds or

thousands of unread emails in your

inbox isn’t necessarily a problematic

behavior. Although Friedman cautions

against drawing broad conclusions into

people’s personality and psychological

state from their email habits. He offers

a few possible explanations for this

tendency.

Most people actually read their email but

a few don’t. Our daily lives are mostly

entangled by digital communication.

Some people don’t care very much

about unread emails, even though there

may be thousands of them. As long as

they are doing their routine job on a

daily basis, they don’t feel that there is

anything in the emails that they ought

to worry about. Though unread emails

signify that a person is disengaged,

Friedman tells the Business Insider that

it can also mean that you recognize that

monitoring and organizing those emails

isn’t helping you achieve progress. And

for some, it’s a sign of intelligence.

In our current organizational setup there

will be some staff that belong to this

type of personality, but believe it or

not some of them are more productive

than savers. After all, Friedman says,

“email reflects other people’s priorities

for you, not necessarily important work

that requires your immediate attention.”

At the end of it, it is the individual who

determines the need for actions he/she

will be taking in order to accomplish the

given task(s).

In our present organizational set-up,

the importance of emails and electronic

communication is akin to the effective

performance of staff. It’s a fact that

instructions are given electronically for

fast and ease of service. Thus, everyone

is obliged to check and monitor their

emails.

I still remember during the staff induction

activity conducted by the center the

need to check our emails regularly was

stated and restated emphatically, but

apparently the management has no

mechanism to evaluate if staff have read

their email or discarded them, as long

as the staff performs the required task

effectively.

Regardless of the type you belong to, as

long as you are efficient and promote a

productive working environment these

personality-related behaviors do not

really matter. But if you think it does,

then what according to you is ideal to

make our work easier and simpler?
