1. INTRODUCTION

Presentations within other events have been seen from the beginning as a key tool to achieve dissemination goals. During this first stage, partners have been focused on general project presentation under task 4.2 (so far 44 events) to publicize the ECOMED initiative with the objective of maximizing stakeholder’s interest in ECOMED research alliance and contributing to the creation of an active and successful network. Event participation has covered more than 10 different countries (Scotland, England, Germany, Greece, Italy, Spain, Canada, Portugal, FYROM, France, Turkey, etc.) and some online participation with all EU scope. All external events dealt with themes related to ERASMUS topics, bio-engineering, ecosystem services, type of plants and living material, entrepreneurship, research and education, etc. It should also be noted that the events had different scope, finding events with national, European or global dissemination. All this information is collected under the Output 4.2-Events (WP4 folder in ECOMED_ALL).

CONCLUSIONS

The participants of the "3rd International Symposium of Soil and Water bioengineering" organized by the “Ente

Parco dei Nebrodi”, the C.I.R.I.T.A. of the University of Palermo (Italy) and the AIPIN (Italian Association for

BioEnginnering) in Sant'Agata di Militello (Messina) in the Nebrodi Park on 13-14-15 October 2017, at the end of

the conference work they bring to the attention of the population and, in particular, of the political and

administrative class, the urgency to undertake as soon as possible regional policies and effective actions for

adaptation to Climate Change.

In particular, the Council formed by numerous representatives of the national and international scientific and

575796-EPP-1-2016-1-ES-EPPKA2-KA

professional world, highlighted two critical priorities:

• The risk of desertification with dramatic consequences on ecosystems, agriculture, tourism, freshwater

supply, and the health of citizens;

• The risk of possible extreme weather events, localized to produce landscape instability, landslides and

floods, even in the urban area, of critical proportions

Our proposal is to prepare as soon as possible a programme of adaptation to Climate Change that

passes through the restoration, the recovery and the renaturation of degraded ecosystems. In

particular, it is planned to implement interventions to improve the resilience of ecosystems and the

natural and ecological recovery of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, articulated in the following

objectives:

1. To improve the microclimate through an adequate plant cover that involves the use of indigenous

herbaceous, shrub and tree species ecologically compatible with the intervention sites.

2. Introduce species with biotechnical characteristics suitable for addressing the new challenges arising

from changes, which requires an adequate experimentation necessary to test the responses not only of

the different species, but also of the herbal combinations and of the planting techniques.

3. Drastically limit the phenomena of soil erosion and landscape instability with appropriate naturalistic

techniques and reforestation interventions, also using indigenous shrub species.

4. Restoring landscape connectivity and reducing habitat fragmentation.

5. To safeguard habitats, endemic and rare species of flora from invasive species.

6. To increase the resilience of coastal marine ecosystems and to counteract the release of greenhouse

gases through reforestation and restoration interventions with marine phanerogram on the degraded

seabeds.

7. Facilitating, monitoring and managing the adaptation of wildlife and habitats to Climate Change.

8. Improving the protection of aquifers, with priority for the most vulnerable ones.

9. Restore the morphological diversity of watercourses.

10. Apply the techniques of Water & Soil Bioengineering for the maintenance of the territory.

11. Take sustainable actions to prevent the damage to the Natural and Cultural Capital of the territories.

12. In general, increase the Natural and Cultural Capital of the regional territories.

We remind that an extensive documentation is available for defining the priority areas on which to

operate, and a wide range of multidisciplinary competences suitable to provide coherent design

solutions to meet the goals of the objectives. We also remind that not intervening in time will cost much

more than the costs of intervention themselves.

The institutions, the professors and the associations present in this Symposium are ready to get involved

and work with the Political actors to address choices towards feasible and scientifically coherent

policies. They are also ready to provide information for the citizens.

The institutions and associations present today ask the Presidents of the Italian regions to include in

their political agendas the "Green infrastructure programme for the renaturalisation of ecosystems" as a

priority programme and, at the same time, to proceed quickly to allocate and find the sums necessary

for the first interventions.

www.ecomedbio.eu

The 9th and 10th of May the Third Symposium of R+D+I in Soil Bioengineering was held in the Forestry School of Madrid (Technical University of Madrid). The focus was set on Green Infrastructure and Urban Sustainable Drainage Systems.

More than 130 practitioners attended the event. The attendees had the chance to analyse the role of both the Green Infrastructure and Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDs) in safeguarding and improving the water storage capacity of soils and aquifers.

Thanks to the magnificent presentations of the invited key speakers, the existing synergies between the green infrastructure concept and the soil and water bioengineering techniques were both explained and highlighted. The Ecomed project was introduced to the attendees.

Interesting contents were discussed such as: the Sustainable Drainage Manual from Lombardy region (Italy), the green infrastructure planning and design within the IVCyRE strategy and framework, a urban design incorporating the SUDs, examples of urban runoff management in some important cities, the green and blue infrastructure systems in Vitoria Gasteiz (Basque Country, Spain), The example of a stormwater basin in Viladecans (Bercelona, Spain), the problems related to runoff management in Madrid city…

The 10th of May, during the excursion to the Valdebebas Park, different interventions (e.g., the urban planning works, gardening and landscaping works, etc.) carried out by the Madrid Council were in situ discussed and visited.

The world has grown at a dizzying pace over the last century. As a result of this often unbalanced development,

the Earth's green spaces are shrinking dramatically, with a tendency towards globalisation to the detriment of

biodiversity. Reversing this tendency in the name of eco-sustainability and biodiversity is the goal of everyone

wanting to give a future to the world to come. Flormart, the international exhibition of floriculture, floristry and

landscaping, the Terra Verde Project and Ab Origine are working to achieve this purpose.

SUMMARY

Started in 2007, “Vestire il Paesaggio” is an international meeting at its IV edition aimed to propose innovative

planning and production ideas coming from Pistoia and fully using the opportunities offered by a wide range of

cultivated plants to enhance the town through an environmental policy and effectively encourage the contact

between citizens, natural beauty and the healthy green.

The 2017 edition with the topic “From the Culture of Green to the Culture of Landscape” is one of the major events

of “Pistoia, Italian Capital of Culture”: an additional role of promotion tool for the territory of Pistoia, not only as

“City of plants”, but also as town of art and excellence, offering a territory rich in landscape beauties, masterpieces

SUMMARY

The initiative intends to make known and disseminate the best practices and solutions for the control of erosion phenomena that manifest themselves over the territories in the post-fire phase, using for this purpose, study and demonstration plots of Natural Engineering techniques that will contribute to stabilization of slopes and in the mitigation of erosion and silting phenomena in watercourses. The general objectives of the test area were to place 4 sediment retention techniques in the most similar situations possible: slope, erosion, stability and vegetation cover. Prior to each retention technique a coconut erosion control blanket was placed at half the distance to provide a comparison term for retention techniques with and without immediate erosion control.

DESCRIPTION AND ACTIVITIES

Day 21: For the test area, four plots with approximately 9-10 meters length were implemented, where each of the four longitudinal techniques of sediment retention were constructed. The techniques chosen were the coir log, the log barrier, the cylindrical gabion and the palisade. The longitudinal line chosen is located on a slope having on each side a temporary water line which joins at the end thereof. The techniques protect and retain the sediments in the middle of the slope and at the same time prevent them from being drawn to the water lines. In order to evaluate and monitor the difference between a zone where the soil will be protected with an immediate erosion control solution, in contrast to a zone that will be on bare soil, a 5 meter strip with coconut erosion control blanket and another identical unprotected strip. In the afternoon the coconut erosion control blankets were installed. At the bottom they were placed under the sediment retention techniques and at the top in an anchoring ditch. The coconut erosion control blanket was fixed with a j-hook approximately 1 per sqm. In schist areas such as the chosen slope, the fixing of the blanket has become a very complicated task, and there is the need to find other alternatives for fixing the chosen technique.

Day 22: At the beginning of the day it was necessary to replace one corner of the organic blanket of the first parcel. During the night the test area was visited by deer or boar, who raised the coconut erosion

control blanket. At the scheduled time, Ing. Miguel Freitas, Secretary of State for Forestry and Rural Development, and Ing. Rogério Rodrigues, President of the Nature Conservation and Forestry Institute, were received by approximately 60 people. They explained to the participants the preparation of the test area and started the visit. Coming to our plot Prof. Domingos Lopes continued the subject initiated by Ing. Miguel Freitas, explaining the reasons for the presence of UTAD, the needs and the benefits that UTAD can bring to the resolution of problems related to burnt areas. Before closing Ecosalix then explained the techniques and function of each one. Pamphlets were also distributed on the Ecomed project and Ecosalix. Accompanied by Ing. Miguel Freitas and Eng. Rogério Rodrigues and those present, the techniques were then explained, identifying all the products used, the constitution and the usefulness of each one. The need for the joint work of entities such as Ecosalix and universities was also strengthened and the presence of Ecosalix in the European ECOMED project was addressed.

CONCLUSIONS In this event, Ecosalix intends to present erosion control and sediment retention techniques useful for burning areas, to help the ICNF to solve the problems that will appear with the first rains. This event is due to the creation of Operation 8.1.4 «Reestablishment of forest affected by biotic and abiotic agents or by catastrophic events» (PDR 2020) by the Portuguese Government and the ICNF. This operation intends to reduce the effects caused by the large fires that occurred in the continental national territory.

PLACE Ecological Engineering Journal SUMMARY

DESCRIPTION AND ACTIVITIES

Due largely to anthropogenic activities and extreme climate events, the risk of shallow landslides and erosion has increased enormously over the last decade, and so is investigated and disseminated n the ECOMED project. Although the planting of vegetation is widely acknowledged as improving soil conservation on slopes, how to plant and manage a vegetated slope over time can be problematic. Correct identification of the mass-wasting process and site characterization is necessary before choosing the plant species best suited to a site. To aid the site manager choose the most appropriate species, in the ECOMED project, we have developed a database containing species sorted by their utility for retaining soil on slopes subject to shallow landslides, wind and water erosion. The list of species was compiled from the literature and suitability is based on ecological attributes, shoot and root traits. The database is open to experts who can add new information via a website (in particular ECOMED members), whereas the general public can access the data freely: http://publish.plantnet-project.org/project/stability en.

SUMMARY The aim of the symposium is to present and discuss the possibilities offered by the technical discipline of Soil- and Water- Bioengineering to the ecological, economic, and societal challenges we are facing within a changing climate. As a society, we are experiencing a period of uncertainty, in which we perceive that the solutions could come from finding a balance within our environment based on the sustainable management of our ecosystems, the restoration of their functionality and services, and the use of nature-based construction systems such as soil- and water- bioengineering techniques. It is envisaged that UK practitioners and researchers will foster a deeper and more meaningful relationship with their international counterparts at the Symposium by sharing experiences around common areas of interest. www.symposium.efib.org

CONCLUSIONS The summarizing discussions and round table showed that the interest and enthusiasm for soil and water bioengineering is increasing throughout Europe and internationally. However, there is an urgent need for better communication and cooperation between academia and industry. Practitioners believe that the advancement in the sector depends largely on the amount of evidence in terms of successful design and construction of bioengineering measures that needs to be presented to the decision makers who would then become more aware and attuned to the rationale and benefits bioengineering can produce. Some of these benefits include long-term sustainability which can be measured and recorded using a more standardized approach as presented during the round table.

SUMMARY Recent years have seen an increase in catastrophic incidents due to slope instability problems in Europe. Rains and floods are often causes of mass wasting and it is fundamental to study the nature of territory to find a solution. To restore a slope stabilization depends both on the type of vegetation and the origins of territory.

DESCRIPTION AND ACTIVITIES Experts discussed about the hydraulics but overall about the nature of territory. To know the place where you have to do an intervention is fundamental to understand what is the best work you can do. After doing that you can start to project considering also the autochtone vegetation of the place. During the conference some case studies are analysed and the final conclusion was that a lot of work is be done.

SUMMARY What is Ecomed? Ecomed is an alliance of 14 partner joined together for the purpose to create a unique syllabus about bioengineering and a cooperation between the several nations. Landslides, erosion, and floods are natural processes which increase soil loss and land degradation. These events are region-specific. Climate change is important to consider region by region. Ecomed is a project to discuss all these subjects and to create new ideas in a sustainable world.

DESCRIPTION AND ACTIVITIES

A description about the project has showed how it is important to have an interchange of ideas coming from different nations. A round table is formed by all the students discussing the several problems created by the climate change. A lot of solutions are thought about these accidents. The real problem is that administration is not always so open to the bioengineering projects.

Few words on MAB/ UNESCO Programme

The MAB Programme develops the basis within the natural and social sciences for the rational and sustainable use

and conservation of the resources of the biosphere and for the improvement of the overall relationship between

people and their environment. It predicts the consequences of today’s actions on tomorrow’s world and thereby

increases people’s ability to efficiently manage natural resources for the well-being of both human populations

and the environment.

By focusing on sites internationally recognized within the World Network of Biosphere Reserves, the MAB

Programme strives to:

identify and assess the changes in the biosphere resulting from human and natural activities and the effects of

these changes on humans and the environment, in particular in the context of climate change;

study and compare the dynamic interrelationships between natural/near-natural ecosystems and socio-

economic processes, in particular in the context of accelerated loss of biological and cultural diversity with

unexpected consequences that impact the ability of ecosystems to continue to provide services critical for

human well-being;

SUMMARY

UNESCO CONFERENCE: ‘MOBILISING UNESCO CHAIRS IN NATURAL SCIENCES FOR POLICY ACTION TOWARDS THE

2030 AGENDA’

This conference will mark the 25th anniversary of the creation of the UNESCO/UNITWIN Chairs Programme, and

will bring together, for the first time, all UNESCO Chairs and UNITWIN Networks related to the natural sciences in a

common reflection on their contribution to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its Sustainable

Development Goals (SDGs).

Today UNESCO has more than 700 Chairs worldwide, with more than 170 belonging to the Natural Sciences Sector

and covering a wide range of UNESCO themes from water science to engineering, from the science-policy interface

to biodiversity conservation. This unique network is widely recognized and has an important role to play in the

common efforts to achieve the 17 SDGs.

DESCRIPTION AND ACTIVITIES

Topics for Discussion

It is now well accepted that sustainable development and climate change can only be tackled at the global level

and through the active participation of everyone: States, international organizations, NGOs, civil society, and

scientific communities, notably that for Science, Technology and Innovation (STI).

Thus, scientists need to be at the heart of the global governance surrounding the SDGs. To achieve this, interfaces

between stakeholders, notably scientists and International organizations, need to be created, developed and

nurtured. UNESCO, with its mandate in Sciences, is a go-between.

A. Strengthen, Promote and Create: the Geneva Milestone

Point 1: How can we strengthen the capacities of UNESCO Chairs to contribute to the SDGs?

Point 2: How can we promote exchange and cooperation among Chairs and between them and UNESCO?

Point 3: How can we develop outreach and partnerships between UNESCO Chairs and other stakeholders, such as

international organisations and the private sector?

B. International Initiatives to Protect Human Scientific Capital

The pursuit and application of knowledge through STI represents and underpins the some of the most significant

human achievements. STI is considered as a key enabler for the achievement of the 2030 Sustainable Development

Agenda and its 17 SDGs.

Ecoengineering is a method that should be further adopted and implemented worldwide since it can help

sustainably with the meting the 2030 Agenda.

AWARENESS EVENT: What is ECOENGINEERING. Importance of soil field measurements

Freshman students in the Department of Forestry and Natural Environment Management, EMMaTTech were

introduced to the concept of ECOENGINEERING and the importance of soils and the interconnection of soil field

measurements and ecoengineering.

DESCRIPTION AND ACTIVITIES

ECOENGINEERING Definitions. How to take soil profiles and measure soil properties in the field.

The students were initially introduced to the concept of ECOENGINEERING and how it differs from other

engineering works. Next the students were introduced on how to take soil profiles . Specifically the students in

groups took soil profiles along the slope of a forested area, at the top middle and the bottom of the forest areas .

The students would separate the soil profile into the major horizons and measure different soil parameters at each

horizon (e.g. color, pH, structure). Finally the use of soil profiling in ecoengineering was explained.
