Welcome

Bonjour à toutes et tous,Dear cinema lovers, Welcome to the 16th French Film Festival! On behalf of the Embassy of France in New Zealand, we are delighted to be partnering with the festival, bringing you this selection of intriguing, and moving stories from the “cinéma français”.

Behind the scenes, the work is carried out by the selection committee headed by Fergus Grady and the FFFA team, under the supervision of Managing Director Simon Werry. Thank you for all your dedication, turning the French Film Festival into one of the most popular cultural events in New Zealand in 2021. Building on last year’s resounding success, the festival’s team has once again packed all the essentials from the latest releases: comedies, dramas, romance, topped with some discoveries from the Festival de Cannes. The audacity and excellence of French cinema and its talents will be showcased with a generous line-up of films to choose from.

I am looking forward to seeing Ouistreham (Between Two Worlds), a poignant story of resilience, betrayal and hope, starring the charismatic Juliette Binoche. Another highlight is Un autre monde (Another World) with Vincent Lindon and Sandrine Kiberlain, who form a superb duo fighting to restore a precious work-life balance.

Take your pick and mark your diary.

Vive le cinéma!

Bienvenue à la Fête du cinéma français en Aotearoa.

After the success of last year’s festival where we saw record attendance, we’re excited to present 21 of the best French films to NZ audiences this June/July.

It was a strong year for French cinema, despite the obvious production problems, and we are proud to premiere a French box office no. 1: OSS 117: From Africa with Love.

Our opening night film A Mermaid in Paris invites you to experience a refreshingly original vision, where our protagonist rescues a mermaid who has washed up on the banks of the river Seine.

We have included some of the funniest comedies released in France - including Happy 50, Murder Party & Rumba Therapy - that will have you in fits. We’ve also highlighted some of the strongest dramas in Maigret, Everything Went Fine, and The Young Lovers.

For our foodies we have The Kitchen Brigade, and for our younger cinema lovers the star-studded reboot of Little Nicholas’ Treasure is a great outing for the family.

Whichever city or town you live in, we’re excited to present all 21 films at your local participating cinema. The Festival couldn’t take place without these 16 dedicated cinema partners, as well as our sponsors & dedicated Festival team.

Vive le cinéma! Vive les émotions partagées!

Festival patron - Francesca Rudkin

I’m honoured to be invited back this year to take up the role of Festival Patron - and what a line-up! It was hard to narrow down my top picks, but these were the standouts:

FAREWELL, MR HAFFMANNOne of the strongest dramas I’ve seen from France, the film had me on the edge of my seat for the entire two hours. The legendary Daniel Auteuil gives one of his best performances in a script that couldn’t be any tighter.LA TRAVIATA, MY BROTHERS AND INour is a 14 year old virtuoso on the way to becoming the new Luciano Pavarotti. A touching story of hope, the film breaks down the barriers and preconceptions surrounding art and culture.EVERYTHING WENT FINEFrom mastermind director François Ozon, starring Sophie Marceau and Charlotte Rampling, this film had a powerful impact.

A MERMAID IN PARISA Mermaid in Paris transported me to the Parisian streets and into the speakeasy club where our leading man Gaspard (played by Nicolas Duvauchelle) sings every night to an adoring audience. A spectacle of amazing outfits and locations.EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTHVincent is seconded to the worst jobs that a French government employee can land, including an isolated post in the North Pole. The film takes the audience on an overdue journey around the world.

Antoine, a history teacher in his early 50s, learns that he has become very hard of hearing. Unable to own up to his handicap, he resigns himself to living in his bubble, even though his entourage finds his behavior increasingly odd. His encounter with Claire, widow and mother of a young girl who has stopped speaking, will lead him to open up to the world. The well-rounded cast of Hear Me Out delivers a touching exploration of the risks and rewards of revealing our vulnerabilities and that shows there’s no shame in asking for help.

Gilles Lellouche stars as Mathieu, a gregarious and dedicated diplomat who accepts a posting to Irkutsk as the head of Siberia’s Alliance Française. He hopes the change will be good for his family and struggling marriage, but before long Mathieu’s staging of cultural events and support of artistic expression sees him fall afoul of local authorities. Accused of a terrible crime, he soon realises someone has fabricated a case with Russia’s Federal Security Service; he has been framed. Arrested, imprisoned and isolated, Mathieu has nowhere to turn. Defending himself is impossible, the French authorities are helpless... it seems he has no choice: to try and escape.

In this irreverent and feel-good comedy, a group of long-time friends get together for a hilarious and eventful vacation, in which nothing will go as planned and their friendship will be put to the test.

To celebrate Yves’ 50th birthday, his friends plan to take him to the sunny paradise of Paros in Greece. But due to a cancelled flight, the holiday will take place in a far less glamorous and much rainier destination: Yves’ family home in Brittany. During the vacation, their bonds are challenged by Antoine’s constant complaining, Yves’ pride, Baptiste’s superstition and Laurent’s jealousy of Jean-Mich’s perfect life and family. On top of that, Antoine’s supposedly harmless joke – offering Yves a DNA ancestry test – has unforeseen consequences…

France, early 1960s. In the idyllic world of 9-year-old Nicholas (Ilan Debrabant), there is Papa (Jean-Paul Rouve), Mum (Audrey Lamy), his school and - most importantly - his ragtag group of friends. Cheeky, inseparable and mischievous, they call themselves ‘The Invincibles’ and life couldn’t be better.

But when his father receives a sought-after promotion and announces that the family must move to the south of France, it’s the worst news imaginable. Nicholas simply can’t fathom life without his pals, and neither can they. Before long a plan is afoot to prevent this terrible relocation…

In this psychological thriller in the Hitchcockian tradition, Virginie Efira (Bye Bye Morons) deftly embodies the troubled personality of a woman whose identity cracks under the weight of her own lies. Judith leads a double life between Switzerland and France. In the first country, she lives with Abdel, with whom she is raising a little girl; in the latter, she lives with Melvil with whom she has two older boys. Gradually this fragile balance, based on secrets, lies and back-and-forth trips begins to veer dangerously off the rails. Trapped, Judith choses to plow forward despite the dizzying escalation this entails.

But Jeff is distracted: he’s fallen for Roxane, a supermarket cashier he adores from afar. He tries to win her heart by writing love poems, but doesn’t have the courage to deliver them. Meanwhile, Jeff’s grizzled enforcer is sent to shake down local suburban widow Suzanne (Vanessa Paradis), who is preparing to portray Simone de Beauvoir in the community theatre’s annual musical, but instead finds himself drawn into the actual production…

Drama | Rating TBC | 113 minutes French with English subtitles

Fanny Ardant, Melvil Poupaud and Cécile de France beguile in The Young Lovers, a modern and emotionally-nuanced romantic dramedy of a woman who embarks on a relationship with a much younger man, and the implications her choices have on those around her.

Elegant, retired architect Shauna (Ardant) crosses paths with Pierre (Poupaud), a married oncologist in his 40s, who first made an impression on her in a brief meeting over a decade earlier. Both are drawn to each other, and begin a passionate affair. While Pierre’s family life is soon turned upside down - his wife Shauna struggles with feelings she thought well-belonged to the past, and the promise of what may remain…

Comedy | M | 97 minutes French with English subtitles

With an all-star ensemble cast led by Gérard Depardieu, The Villa joins the ranks of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Calendar Girls and The Intouchables, with its touching and oft-hilarious depiction of friendships formed against all odds.

An unlikely story of friendship between Milan, a young man on parole, who is forced to work in a retirement home rather than going to jail, and a larger-than-life group of retired people who are not really prepared to accept this new recruit.
