LOCUST VALLEY HISTORICAL SOCIETY
Long Island Democrat - February 15, 1853 Microfilm copy obtained at Hofstra University - Long Island Studies Institute - by Newsday, for Long Island, Our Story
DREADFUL ACCIDENT Glen Cove, Tuesday Evening, Feb. 8th, 1853 Continued…
The room was about 20 feet square, the flooring supported underneath only by the beams -- 20 feet in length. About 3 o’clock the room was filled to its utmost capacity, and in order to obtain a better view, and to economize space, many stood upon an old table in the room. So closely were they
packed together in the room, and on the table, that it is said not one more person could have obtained standing room, even. In the midst of the proceedings, several persons spoke of the floor springing, and (we are told) it was recommended by several that they had better adjourn to the next room, that being beyond a doubt safe. Notwithstanding, some of those who had less fear than others, tried to spring the floor,
which every attempt to do so, only settled it the more, the weight on it being not less than 15,000 lbs. At a few minutes before 4 o’clock, and while the witnesses were being examined, the floor on the north-west corner of the room gave way.- - Just previously, however, the table on which many were standing gave way, which was the first impetus- -and the whole tumbled down together in the
second floor of the building causing that to break through and precipitating chairs, benches, tables, a portion of the chimney, the grate containing red hot coals, and about 100 persons sown a distance of over 20 feet.
The scene at this moment was all description. Some striving to make their way out of the ruins over rubbish and the bodies of those under them; and others severely injured crying out for help.
People were to be seen running here and there not knowing what to do, and the greater portion of those seriously injured were extricated by those who fell, but were less hurt or apparently so. Some four or five who had helped others out after the excitement of the sad calamity was over, found them-
selves badly hurt; and under the head of “slightly injured” their names will found. To be continued...
