WINE TASTING TIPSWhen in doubt, call ahead. It never hurts to call the winery to make an appointment no matter the size of your party, and if you have a group of six or more it’s proper etiquette (if not mandatory). This phone call is a great time to ask any questions you may have and, if you have flexibility, gauge the best time to visit.

If you plan one thing, make it your meals. Start the the day with a hearty breakfast and pack snacks like bread and cheese. Some wineries have food for purchase; check our key for the icon . Check for the picnic area icon

and always ask before bringing outside food to a winery.

Don’t overbook. Plan for at least 45 minutes at each winery plus travel time, and remember that three relaxed winery visits will make for a much more memorable day than eight rushed ones.

You don’t have to be the designated driver to make use of spittoons and dump buckets. Wine industry professionals spit constantly, so no one will think you’re an amateur for pacing yourself. (If no one wants to be the designated driver, the Willamette Valley has several tour companies to choose from—see page 45!)

Avoid wearing fragrances or scented beauty products, which can distract you and your fellow tasters from what’s in the glass.

No need to book a babysitter: many Willamette Valley wineries offer outdoor games, picnic spots, family events and non-alcoholic beverages. Use our family-friendly search filter on our website to plan a trip with small children. Bringing the family dog? Watch for the dog-friendly icon in this guide.

Expect tasting room staff to follow the same laws as any bar regarding checking ID and denying service to inebriated persons.

Oregon is famous for its cycling culture. If you prefer two-wheeled travel, filter your search on our website for bike-friendly wineries. (Please wear a helmet and keep in mind that Oregon’s DUI laws apply to cyclists.)

If you wish to tip your tasting room associate, ask first. Tipping policies vary and some tasting rooms do not allow tips. A compliment to the hospitality manager or positive review for excellent service is always appreciated, too.

Never bring outside alcohol into a tasting room unless the business explicitly allows BYO.

Ask before walking through the vineyard or cellar; these are working production facilities and wandering around unannounced is unsafe. Consider scheduling a guided tour instead!
