WELCOME TO ST. AIDAN Our parish is a vibrant and active Catholic community located in Nassau County, Long Island, New York. We are a Roman Catholic parish in the Diocese of Rockville Centre serving the communities of Williston Park, East Williston, Albertson, and parts of Mineola, Roslyn Heights, and Searingtown. RECTORY OFFICE 516-746-6585 HOURS MONDAY TO FRIDAY 9:00 AM TO 12:00 PM 1:00 PM TO 4:00 PM SATURDAY & SUNDAY 9:00 AM TO 12:00 PM MISSION STATEMENT We, the parish family of the Church of St Aidan, strengthened by the Eucharist and encouraged by the Word of God, welcome all, for we encourage that everyone is a child of God and no one should be excluded. Guided by the Holy Spirit through prayer, we strive as one to build the Body of Christ. We commit ourselves to nurturing lifelong faith formation, fostering lay leadership, promoting social justice, engaging our youth in every aspect of parish life, and offering care and compassionate service to all. We invite everyone to walk with Jesus and experience His healing power and love. THE CHURCH OF ST. AIDAN IS OPEN Daily 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Daily Mass can be viewed on staidanparish.org and on Facebook. The faithful are required to attend Sunday and Holy Days of Obligation Masses. This obligation does not apply to those who are ill, those who are confined to their home, a hospital, or nursing facility, or those with serious underlying health conditions. RECEIVING HOLY COMMUNION Holy Communion unites us more closely to Jesus, and it is also a sign that we are living in communion with His Church, following the teachings that Jesus has handed down to us. One should only receive Holy Communion if he believes what the Catholic Church teaches, and is living as a member of the Church, following the way of life that she sets out for her children. If one is conscious of serious sin, he should receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation before approaching Holy Communion.
CONFESSION Confessions are available in the church, screen only, on Saturday from 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM and 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM. You can also make a confession appointment with a priest by calling the rectory office. BAPTISM To arrange a baptism contact the rectory at 516-746-6585. Forms need to be completed giving information on the parents, child’s date and place of birth, as well as the names and religious affiliation of the sponsors. At least one sponsor must be a practicing Catholic. Baptisms are held on the 1st Sunday and 3rd Sunday at 1:30 PM. To hold a private baptism you must make arrangements with a priest or deacon to perform the baptism. Private baptisms are held on Saturday or Sunday when the church is available. First time parents are required to attend a Baptism Class. Classes are held in the church on the second Sunday of the month after the 12 Noon Mass. Parents are asked to gather at St. Joseph’s statue to the right of the main altar. MARRIAGE Arrangements are to be made at the Rectory office at least 9 months in advance. Pre-Cana and FOCCUS registrations must be arranged. ANOINTING The anointing takes place at 1:00 PM on the 4th Sunday of each month. Please wait for the priest at Our Lady’s Shrine. ADVENT IS THE SEASON OF HOPE. But
when we look at the world around us,
when we hear the news, it’s pretty hard
to make a case for living with hope!
Rising inflation has everyone worried about the cost of
living through Winter. And who’s going to pay for the
astronomical debt we are assuming? And then there’s
the violence. Every day we hear of attacks on city
streets that were once safe. The increase of migrants
from neighboring lands where there is no work and no
hope, has resulted in a crisis at the border. And that’s
just in our own nation. In light of all this—is it
possible to face the future with hope?
The disciples of Jesus were wondering the same
thing. He had just been talking with them about
Jerusalem and the Temple. He had predicted
destruction, catastrophe, and chaos. The disciples,
understandably, were alarmed, and asked if this would
be the sign of the end of the world as they knew it.
“No,” Jesus replies. “The end of the Temple won’t
mean the end of the world. In fact, I can guarantee you
this: it’s bad all over now, and it’s going to get worse
before the end comes!” Well, thanks a lot, Jesus!
So—is it at all possible to face the future with hope?
Well, as is often the case, we need to take a closer look
at the words of Jesus. Yes, he speaks in today’s gospel
about hard times coming for the people of God, but
Jesus also encourages Christians to live in such times
with HOPE, not in fear and dread! After all, Jesus says,
chaos and evil and death do NOT have the last
word. GOD has the last word! And, as he speaks these
words, Jesus is about to do just what he is promising.
Jesus is preparing to enter right into the jaws of evil
and death, and suffer and be killed on a cross. Jesus is
about to challenge the powers that be, and let them
have their way with him, but then rise in triumph over
death and the grave! He is about to have the last word
and usher in the kingdom of God. So He encourages us,
‘Stand erect and raise your heads because your
redemption is at hand.” And what would that kingdom
look like?
It would look like Jesus ruling for eternity with a
love and mercy that just won’t quit—even in the
face of horrible evil and certain death.
It would look like Jesus, gathering disciples from
among the forgotten ones of this time, training and
empowering them for a mission far beyond their
wildest imagination!
It would look like Jesus, through His Church,
pouring life into a world that seems to be dying,
giving hope to the hopeless!
And do you know what? That kingdom is near, right
now as we gather around the Lord’s table.
God’s kingdom is near when God’s people act
selflessly, rather than selfishly, and feed the
hungry, clothe the naked, and shelter the homeless.
God’s kingdom is near when God’s people say “no”
to evil, and promote truth.
God’s kingdom is near when the most vulnerable
are protected, from womb to tomb, when the
mighty are humbled, and rich and poor alike turn
in faith and hope to God.
If you agree, ‘stand erect and raise your heads’ to
watch for the coming of Jesus among us. Do not
look down in fear, or become distracted from what
really matters. Isn’t that the theme of Advent “Be
alert! Watch! Pray!”
So the answer to the question is “Yes.” Yes, in Christ
it is possible—possible to face the future with hope!
What’s Pastor Thinking
Stand erect and raise your heads because
your redemption is at hand

GETTING MARRIED IN CHURCH
The Catholic Church has a long history of helping couples to
prepare for marriage. It has learned a great deal that can
benefit any couple, regardless of religion. Because the Catholic
Church wants couples to form strong, lasting marriages,
couples who wish to marry in the Catholic Church are asked to:
Contact and meet with your parish priest as soon as you
are engaged.
Take at least six months to intensively prepare for your
marriage. This goes beyond choosing a date and church,
reserving a place for the reception, and picking out
dresses. It means using this time to delve more deeply into
your relationship and approach this momentous day with
prayer and reflection.
Attend an approved marriage preparation program. There
are many different formats for marriage preparation
programs ranging from intensive weekends, to a weekly
series, to “in home” mentor couple programs. Catholic
marriage preparation programs are usually presented by a
team of lay married couples and a priest or deacon. They
are not restricted to Catholics, but they are always in
keeping with Church teaching.
Most dioceses ask couples to take a marriage preparation
inventory (such as FOCCUS). These are not “tests” to
determine whether you can get married in the Church, but
rather discussion starters to assess what issues you
already agree on and what you might need to discuss
further.
At the time of your engagement, the Church welcomes you to
this sacrament of Marriage in the spirit of Jesus who said: ‘This
is my commandment: love one another as I love you. No one
has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s
friends.’ (John 15:12-13)’

FAMILY MASS
Each week the Family Mass continues to
provide some materials to help children
participate at Sunday Mass and to
enhance follow-up during the week. The
Magnifikids magazines are available on
a weekly basis along with the Children's
Worship Bulletins for ages 3 to 7 and
ages 7 to 12. They are located in the
Children's Corner racks in the main
lobby of the church. Please do not leave
them in the pews.
Today is the First Sunday of Advent and
the beginning of a new Liturgical
(Church) Year. The liturgical color is
purple. Each week we have been
focusing on a Word, Phrase, or Short
Sentence of the Week to help link the
Sunday gospel to Family Life. This
week’s Short Sentence of the Week is:
WATCH AND WAIT FOR JESUS. Write
the Short Sentence of the Week and
place it on the refrigerator as a
reminder during the week.
Today’s Gospel, (Luke 21:25-28, 34-36),
describes the signs and wonders that
will anticipate the Second Coming of
Jesus at the end of the world. The old
liturgical year ended on the exact same
theme of the Second Coming of Jesus.
This most important theme rolls over in
the new liturgical year as we move into
cycle C of the readings, which are
primarily from Luke’s gospel. Clearly,
regardless of which account of the
Second Coming is read, there will be
natural signs that it is imminent so the
theme in all these readings is that we
should be ready whenever that may be.
Thinking quite practically, none of us
knows when our individual lives will
end so we must be in a state of personal
readiness at all times! This may seem to
be a scary, almost morbid way to begin
this season of joy that should prepare us
to celebrate Christmas, but on the
contrary, this gospel is one of huge
hope. Jesus said, “But when these signs
begin to happen, stand erect and raise
your heads because your redemption is
at hand.” Thus, we continue to WATCH
AND WAIT FOR JESUS as we strive to
celebrate His First Coming on Christmas
and we live in hope and joyful
anticipation for the Second Coming of
Christ.
All of the Biblical readings that describe
the end times can seem scary to children
but with some guidance from parents
and the trusted adults in children’s lives,
they can overcome their fears and
embrace the many beautiful messages of
these passages, hope, victory, eternal
happiness, love, peace, etc. The list is
really endless. We should point out to
children that being watchful and ready
for Jesus’ coming can actually bring
them a sense of confidence and peace.
They do not have to be afraid of Jesus
because He loves them completely and
forever, no matter what happens. This
child-like confidence is age appropriate
and definitely something to build upon
when helping children to form some
type of planned preparation for
Christmas. We prepare for and
celebrate Christmas to help us to be
ready for when Jesus comes again.
The season of Advent is rich in customs
and traditions that can be very helpful in
teaching children joyful anticipation and
deliberate preparation as we approach
the Christmas season. From all the
family and household activities that
precede the Christmas season, children
understand at even very early ages to
observe the “signs” of the times around
them. They take in all the lights, colors,
shopping, and decorating that is
happening with and around them. It’s
only natural that as the big day draws
nearer, the anticipation, unfortunately
mostly centered on toys and gifts,
builds. Children, along with us, can
easily lose the true focus that should
accompany both the Advent and
Christmas seasons. The Family Mass is
trying to help by distributing a simple
cardstock Advent wreath today along
with the first candle, the Candle of Hope,
to attach to the wreath. Going forward,
each Sunday in Advent, the children will
receive another candle for their
wreaths. Even if you already have an
Advent wreath in your home, it is still
advantageous for each child to make one
of these wreaths and keep it in a special
place in his/her room. The first candle
is symbolic of hope. Remember the
promise of “redemption at hand” in
today’s gospel? That is probably one of
the most hope-filled statements in the
Bible! Celebrate this first week of the
Advent season with a conversation
about the kind of hope that Jesus gives
us while we are being asked to WATCH
AND WAIT FOR JESUS.
Younger children may enjoy playing the
Waiting Game, which is a take-off on
Simon Says…. Begin by giving a list of
commands such as Touch your toes and
Hands on your head, etc. Then
periodically say Wait followed by slowly
counting down from 10 to 0. After a few
rounds ask children how it felt to wait in
whatever position they were in. Even
though we may be excited about
Christmas, we are now in Advent, a time
of waiting and preparing for Jesus.
Brainstorm ideas to formulate a list of
service experiences that your family can
do together during Advent. Decide on
one or two things that can include
everyone in the family doing something.
Try to pick activities where children can
be directly involved. A good example
would be that if your family decides to
collect food, avoid just going to the
supermarket to pick out some food
items but rather, create ways your
children can earn the money or assist in
packing the food donations as would be
appropriate to their ages. Even little
ones can help by carrying light cans
even one at a time! Play Charades and
talk about how each player has to pay
attention to what the person is trying to
communicate without using words.
Jesus is asking us to pay attention to
what is going on around us so we will be
ready for Him.
Reading I Jer 33:14-16
The days are coming, says the LORD,
when I will fulfill the promise I made
to the house of Israel and Judah. In
those days, in that time, I will raise up
for David a just shoot ; he shall do
what is right and just in the land. In
those days Judah shall be safe and
Jerusalem shall dwell secure; this is
what they shall call her: “The LORD
our justice.”
Responsorial Psalm Ps 25:4-5, 8-9,
10, 14
R. (1b) To you, O Lord, I lift my soul.
Your ways, O LORD, make known to
me; teach me your paths, Guide me in
your truth and teach me, for you are
God my savior, and for you I wait all
the day.
R. To you, O Lord, I lift my soul.
Good and upright is the LORD; thus he
shows sinners the way. He guides the
humble to justice, and teaches the
humble his way.
R. To you, O Lord, I lift my soul.
All the paths of the LORD are kindness
and constancy toward those who keep
his covenant and his decrees. The
friendship of the LORD is with those
who fear him, and his covenant, for
their instruction.
R. To you, O Lord, I lift my soul.
Reading II 1 Thes 3:12—4:2
Brothers and sisters: May the Lord
make you increase and abound in love
for one another and for all, just as we
have for you, so as to strengthen your
hearts, to be blameless in holiness
before our God and Father at the
coming of our Lord Jesus with all his
holy ones. Amen. Finally, brothers and
sisters, we earnestly ask and exhort
you in the Lord Jesus that, as you
received from us how you should
conduct yourselves to please God and
as you are conducting yourselves you
do so even more. For you know what
instructions we gave you through the
Lord Jesus.
Gospel Lk 21:25-28, 34-36
11/14/21
Jesus said to his disciples: “There will
be signs in the sun, the moon, and the
stars, and on earth nations will be in
dismay, perplexed by the roaring of
the sea and the waves. People will die
of fright in anticipation of what is
coming upon the world, for the
powers of the heavens will be shaken.
And then they will see the Son of Man
coming in a cloud with power and
great glory. But when these signs
begin to happen, stand erect and raise
your heads because your redemption
is at hand. “Beware that your hearts
do not become drowsy from
carousing and drunkenness and the
anxieties of daily life, and that day
catch you by surprise like a trap. For
that day will assault everyone who
lives on the face of the earth. Be
vigilant at all times and pray that you
have the strength to escape the
tribulations that are imminent and to
stand before the Son of Man.”
The season of Advent begins today!
Take time to reflect on how you will
use the next four weeks to prepare for
Christmas.
We do not know with any degree of
certainty when the celebration of
Advent was first introduced into the
Church. Certainly, the preparation for
the feast of the Nativity of Our Lord
was not held before that feast itself
existed, and there is no evidence of
this prior to the end of the fourth
century, when it was celebrated
throughout the Church, although not
always on the same date. Some
celebrated on December 25, and
others on January 6. But it is still an
ancient tradition.
Advent (from, "ad-venire" in Latin or
"to come to") begins the Church’s
liturgical year, and is the season of the
four Sundays (and weekdays) leading
up to the celebration of Christmas.
With Advent the ecclesiastical year
begins in the Western churches.
During this time the faithful are
admonished to prepare themselves
worthily to celebrate the anniversary
of the Lord's coming into the world as
the incarnate God of love, thus to
make their souls fitting abodes for the
Redeemer coming in Holy
Communion and through grace, and
thereby to make themselves ready for
His final coming as judge at the end of
the world.
So Advent is a season with a dual
sense of preparation, directing our
hearts and minds to Christ’s second
coming at the end of time as well as to
the anniversary of Our Lord’s birth on
the first Christmas. Christians have
long been fascinated by Jesus’
promise to come back, as far back as
the apostles who asked Him when this
would be. But the Advent scripture
readings tell us not to waste our time
with predictions. Advent is not about
trying to foretell the future. Instead,
the readings call us to be alert and
ready, not weighed down and
distracted by the cares of this
world. This being ready introduces
an element of penance in the sense
of preparing, quieting, and
disciplining our hearts for the full
joy of Christmas. Hence, the
liturgical color for Advent is
purple, although often not as deep
a purple as Lent, since the stress is
less on penance than on
preparation.
Since this is the first Sunday of
Advent, we will begin with a
traditional opening ceremony. It is
time to bring out and bless the
Advent wreath. Traditionally,
Advent wreaths are constructed of
a circle of evergreen branches into
which four candles are inserted,
representing the four weeks of
Advent. Ideally, three candles are
purple, and one is rose, but white
candles can also be used. The
purple candles symbolize the
prayer, penance, and preparatory
sacrifices and good works we
perform at this time. The rose
candle is lit on the third Sunday,
Gaudete Sunday, when the priest
also wears rose vestments at Mass
instead of purple. Gaudete Sunday
is the Sunday of rejoicing, because
the faithful have arrived at the
midpoint of Advent, when our
preparation is now half over, and
we are closer to Christmas. It also
serves to remind us that even in
this season of penance, there is
reason for joy in what we are
preparing for. Each week at Mass,
we will light another candle as we
draw closer to Christmas and to
symbolize the hope we enjoy from
our Lord’s first coming into the
world and in anticipation of His
second coming.
If you wish to have an Advent
wreath at home, a blessing could
be offered by a parent or other
member of the family. Here is a
suggestion for this.
All make the sign of the cross as
the leader says:
Our help is in the name of the
Lord.
All respond: Who made heaven
and earth.
Then a passage from
Scripture, such as Isaiah 9: (verses
1-2 and 5-6) or Isaiah 63 (verses
16-17 & 19) or Isaiah 64 (verses 2-
7) may be read, followed by
Reader: The Word of the Lord.
All: Thanks be to God.
With hands joined, the leader says:
Lord our God, we praise You for
Your Son, Jesus Christ:
He is Emmanuel, the
hope of the peoples, He is
the wisdom that teaches
and guides us, He is the
Savior of every nation.
Lord God, let your
blessing come upon us as
we light the candles of
this wreath. May the
wreath and its light be a
sign of Christ’s promise
to bring us salvation.
May He come quickly and
not delay. We ask this
through Christ our Lord.
All: Amen.
My choice would be the
first reading from Isaiah
noted above. And may
we all share the blessings
of Advent as we prepare
for Christmas.
