THERE was lots to celebrate for customers andstaff in south Sefton’s hospitality sector this weekafter locals were allowed to meet up indoors andenjoy food and drinks!

Restaurants and bars across south Sefton are nowable to reopen inside as lockdown rules were relaxedby the government on Monday, May 17.

Also up and running are art galleries, theatres,sports centres, cinemas and soft play centres, withpeople now allowed to meet inside and stayovernight in groups of six, or two households.

Andrew Peters, who co-owns So Salsa, Rock Saltand The Tree House, all in Crosby, was delighted towelcome back some familiar faces to his restaur-ants.

He told the Champion: “Covid has impacted every-body and hospitality has been hit hard.

“We are very lucky to have an amazing customerbase, who have supported us every time we haveadapted and changed the concept of our restaurants.

“The last five months felt like a year, but we are car-rying on with a positive mind-set hoping that the nexttime we will close our doors will be Christmas, for theright reasons this time.”

There were similar feelings of relief from staff at

Pioneer Bar and Brasserie, also in Crosby.Michele Parry said: “It’s a relief to be open after

being closed for over 150 days in 2020 and 135days in 2021. Plus the endless restrictions duringthe limited time we were allowed to open.

“Our local customers have supported us amaz-ingly since reopening on April 12, whilst enduringthe elements of the British weather sitting outside!

More pharmaciesin borough arenow offeringvaccinationsTHREE more pharmacy-led vaccinationsites have opened in Sefton to help theongoing battle against Covid-19.

Linacre Methodist Mission, on LinacreRoad, in Litherland, St Faith’s Church, onCrosby Road North and Superdrug, on East-bank Street, in Southport, are now offeringthe Covid-19 jab.

People aged 38 and over, health and careworkers, unpaid carers and those withunderlying health conditions are invited tobook their vaccine.

The venues were three of seven new loca-tions opened last week in the north west.

Regional director of commissioning(North West) Dr Linda Charles-Ozuzu, said:“I am delighted to see these additionalpharmacy teams, joining us in the fight tobeat Covid-19 and it’s great news for thepeople in those communities, who will beable to access vaccine services closer towhere they live.

“We are now asking people aged 38 – 39to come forward to receive their vaccine, inaddition to anyone from the previousgroups that were invited and have receivedthe offer but may not yet have booked.

“We all want to get back to some form ofnormality and we have already takenmassive strides to get there in the NorthWest, so if you are eligible for the vaccine,please do your bit to protect yourself andyour loved ones.”

People who have received a letter or textinviting them to book their vaccine can logon to the national booking service atwww.nhs.uk/covid-vaccinationand choosefrom a range of vaccination services acrossthe North West.

Anyone unable to book online can call119 free of charge, anytime between 7amand 11pm seven days a week.

Veterans given extrasupport by local firm

VETERANS in Sefton will benefit from free use ofminibuses, resources, fuel and training andemployment opportunities thanks to a newpartnership with Apex Management Solutions.

The specialist transport provider has been dis-cussing opportunities for partnering with theSefton-based charity throughout Covid lockdown,and is now able to put plans into fruition as restric-tions begin to lift.

Apex will provide free use of its minibuses to takegroups to the Welsh mountains for vital break-awayweekends, as well as offering pick up and drop offfor some of the regular social sessions. Moving for-ward, they will offer training opportunities in bothdriving and support roles with the potential of longterm employment.

Dave Smith of Veterans in Sefton explained: “It’sbrilliant to be able to work closely with Apex, alocal company who are keen to make an impact. Wed o n’t always necessarily want additional funding,what we want is real and tangible support wherewe find practical ways that will make a lasting andpositive impact on the people we work with. We arekeen to work in partnership with businesses andare able to save considerable costs by working inthis way.”

Veterans in Sefton provide critical support toformer veterans across the borough whose agesrange from 16 to 95. According to NHS figures,there are an estimated 27,000 veterans under theage of 65 in Sefton, around 13 per cent of whomhave complex issues that need to be addressed.

Dave continued: “We ’ve been talking throughideas for several months now and its brilliant tofinally be able to put firm plans in place for our firstaway trip where we will use the Apex minibus.”

As an official partner of Veterans in Sefton, theteam has nominated Apex for the Armed ForcesCovenant which recognises organisations, busi-nesses and individuals who support the veterans.

Dave added: “We have a really exciting partner-ship plan in place with Apex and their commitmentto us undoubtedly deserves recognition, and so wewe’re really pleased to be able to nominate them forthe Armed Forces Covenant.”

Boy, 15, accusedwith manslaughterof Connor Dockertyappears in courtA TEENAGE boy has appeared incourt on suspicion of man-slaughter over the death of ConnorDockerty, from Litherland, lastmonth.

Connor Dockerty, 23, wasrepeatedly stabbed and killed out-side a parade of shops onKingsway in Huyton on Monday,April 19.

A post mortem examinationrevealed that Mr Dockerty diedfrom multiple stab wounds.

A 15-year-old boy appeared atmagistrates’ court on Friday, May14 and after the brief hearing hewas remanded in custody to appearat the city’s crown court on June 11.

A 14-year-old boy accused of mur-dering Mr Dockerty has alreadyappeared at the crown court andhas been remanded in custodyuntil July 19 when he is expectedto enter his plea.

A provisional trial date has beenfixed to begin on October 20.Neither boy can be identifiedbecause they are juveniles.

Meanwhile, police are continuingto appeal for anyone with informa-tion about the incident to contactthem, in particular anyone withCCTV, dashcam or video/mobile

footage from the Kingsway or Liv-erpool Road area from around 8pmon April 19.

Rosa beat boredom inlockdown by writing anovel with her grandad!

A YOUNG girl from Maghull and hergranddad who lives abroad managed toteam up over the lockdown period towrite a book together!

Ten-year-old Rosa Parry kept in regulartouch with her grandfather, Harlan Cock-burn, who lives in Budapest, Hungaryusing an internet video chatting serviceand it blossomed into an idea to pen a chil-d re n’s novel.

The book, called Autumn and the WildWorld Web, is how a young girl, calledAutumn, struggled with boredom andloneliness during lockdown until she wasvisited by an urban fox and it sparks anexciting adventure.

Rosa said: “I really enjoyed our calls onZoom and always thinking about what todo next in the story.

“I got surprised sometimes by the thingswe came up with because there weretwists we made up.

“I love the thought of people reading thebook, and it’s for adults too.

“Even people who are seventy couldenjoy it.

“My teacher was excited about the bookand said she would order a copy forschool.

“We have a ‘Proud Wall’ at school andgrandad and I got our names on it, and agold star each. Now I definitely want towrite another book!”

Harlan, who writes under the pseud-onym Harefield, said: “Rosa and I startedchatting on Zoom at a time when she wasdown about missing school and herfriends through lockdown.

“Those feelings are expressed in theopening chapter of Autumn and the WildWorld Web.

“I am based in Budapest, Hungary, sothroughout the pandemic have been

unable to visit my British family.“We then started discussing what Rosa

would like to happen during lockdown,and soon found that we had started tellingan adventure story together.

“We allowed our ideas to roam every-where, and the result is a novel which isnot just for ten year olds, but can appeal toanyone who enjoys a heartfelt tale.

“T h e re ’s also a strong ecological andnature-loving element to the story, andalthough the setting is not specified, read-ers in the Maghull area may recognise

some locations!“Rosa is also the cover artist, and drew a

heading illustration for each chapter.“The book is now available in hardback

Covid evictionban due to expireat end of MayTENANTS and landlords inSefton have been urged to seeksupport as the government’sban on evictions comes to anend on Monday, May 31.

The ban, which was broughtinto place in response to thecoronavirus pandemic, wasextended from its originalSeptember deadline but will nowend on the last day of May.

Sefton Council’s Homeless Pre-vention Service can provideadvice to the borough’s tenantsand landlords and they areurging anyone affected to get intouch.

They can help tenants find sup-port to help maintain theirtenancy or with moving on tomore affordable and suitableaccommodation .

They can also assist landlordsthat are facing issues such as rentarrears and late or inconsistentrent payments.

Landlords who have concernsabout vulnerable tenants canalso contact the team for supportin resolving the situation.

Cllr Trish Hardy, Sefton Coun-cil’s Cabinet Member forCommunities and Housing said:“The impact that the COVID-19pandemic has had on many

people’s circumstances andincomes is likely to be makingthe costs of housing a problemfor some people in Sefton.

“We want any tenants whothink they might be facing prob-lems after the Government endsits eviction ban at the end of Mayto contact us as soon as possibleso that we can work with them tofind practical solutions.

“And we want to hear fromlandlords expecting difficulties,so that we can help them reachpractical solutions without thelost rent and other costs that canresult from evictions and dis-putes.”

Former care homecould be turned intohotel and restaurant

A FORMER care home in Maghull could be turnedinto a hotel and restaurant under plans put toSefton Council.

The Mikhail Group which runs the Bold Hotel inSouthport want to renovate Harrison House andconvert it into a 16-room hotel with a restaurant andbar/lounge which could also be used for functionh i re .

The building was owned by the Parkhaven Trustbut has become disused since more modern facilitiesnorth of the site were opened.

The application states that the building is nolonger viable for modern day care standards, andthat an alternate use would be beneficial to thebuilding as well as the local area.

The existing gatehouse will also be renovated andthere will be a 100 space car park created under theplans.

The Mikhail Group describe the property as “trulystunning” and state that they have “a passion forresorting or renovating buildings of significant localor historical importance.”

The statement adds: “We would encourage anyoneto visit The Bold Hotel in Southport and just appreci-ate the venue. We are immensely proud of the workundertaken which we believe to be completed to thehighest of standards.

“At the start of each project the aim is to bring thebuilding to life, to appreciate and restore its existingfeatures and highlight them to our benefit.

“We aim to restore buildings and compliment theircharacteristics while at the same time tastefullyadding a standard of finish that would be expectedof modern society when they visit a high end hospit-ality venue.”

The planning application states that the new hotelwould look to reuse the “existing internal configura-tion as much as possible to prevent any harm to theinternal fabric of a listed building.”

Three arrested on suspicion ofstealing tractor GPS equipment

THREE people fromSefton have been arrestedas part of an investigationinto the thefts of GPSequipment from tractors.

A lengthy police probe,which began last year,involved finding the cul-prits who had beenstealing the navigationsystems used by farmerson their tractors.

In Cheshire alone,officers estimate thataround half a millionpounds worth of GPS equipment has beenstolen since the back end of last year.

In the early hours of Thursday, May 13,officers searched two addresses in Bootle andarrested three people – two men aged 24 and

23, and a 25-year-oldwoman – on suspicion ofconspiracy to steal.

Cheshire Constabu-lary ’s Rural Crime Teamhave been leading theinvestigation into thethefts, in collaborationwith the farming com-munity and MerseysidePo l i c e ’s Wildlife CrimeTeam and LancashirePo l i c e ’s Rural Task Force.Farmers use GPS on

tractors for a number ofreasons, including mapping the boundaries offields, calculating the area they cover andrecording drainage problems.

One of Sefton’s oldest residentscelebrates her 106th birthdayONE of Sefton’s oldest residentshas celebrated another remark-able birthday - her 106th!

Edith Parnell, who lives at StNicholas Care Home in Nether-ton, enjoyed her big day onMonday, May 10 with staff,friends and family.

She has never lived anywhereother than Bootle, having grownup on Dryden Street before mov-ing to Knowsley Road, ThackerayGardens and then St NicholasCare Home in 2015 at the age of100.

Edith was the youngest sister ina family of five siblings and shemarried twice, firstly to JohnBirchall in 1940 but he sadlypassed away 14 years later.

Two years later, she was re-mar-ried to Ivor Parnell and they livedhappily in Bootle until he died in2001.

Edith has three children and is aproud grandmother to four and agreat-grandmother to eight.

Rapid Covid testingsite moved to Strand

One of Sefton’s two ‘rapid’ c o ro n a v i r u stesting sites, which are for people with nosymptoms, has been moved from BootleLeisure Centre to the nearby Strand Shop-ping Centre.

Sefton Council, which owns the shoppingcentre, has specially adapted the former HSamuel unit for people to come along andtake a rapid test safely.

It is now open seven days a week.S e f t o n’s other rapid test site is at South-

port’s Splash World.Around one third of people with

coronavirus do not show any of the tell-tale symp-toms so by taking regular rapid tests, the councilcan check if you one of these asymptomatic carriersto help make sure you don’t pass on the virus acci-d e n t a l l y.

Rapid home testing kits involves taking a throatand nasal swab, dropping the sample into the con-tainer supplied and then checking for the resultafter 20 to 30 minutes.

As well as both rapid testing sites, kits are avail-able from any Sefton pharmacy and between2.30pm and 8pm, seven days a week from the bor-ough’s walk-through Local Test Centres.

These are located opposite Bootle Town Hall andat Crosby Library Car Park, Netherton ActivityCentre and Southport Town Hall and are open from8am to 8pm, seven days a week.

Sefton Council leader Ian Maher said: “I’m gladthat we can now provide the facility where peoplecan take those rapid tests and collect free home test-ing kits at this convenient Bootle town centrelocation .

Burglary victim speaksof terror ordeal at thehands of armed raiders

A WOMAN from Crosby, who was thevictim of an armed burglary when fourmasked men broke into her home andthreatened her with a knife, has spokenout about her terrifying experience.

The local resident, who is aged in her60s, did not wish to be named, but hasspoken out about the ordeal and how it hasleft a damaging impact on her life.

It happened on Wednesday, December 2last year when the cowardly burglars pre-tended to be delivery men before theybarged through the door, knocking the res-ident to the floor.

They then threatened her with a knifeand a hockey stick as they stole two largesafes from her house.

The safes contained sentimental jew-ellery as well as golden Hindu statues ofGod Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi,which are important to her family’s faith.

The woman was left with leg injuries fol-lowing her ordeal and was extremelyshaken .

She said: “Since the burglary, my familyand I have really struggled to come toterms with what has happened to us.

“Much of what was taken is irreplaceable– items of jewellery that have been passeddown to us from our parents and grand-parents that have been in our family for

generations.“We feel like it’s not just possessions that

have been taken from us but a part of ourfamily history.

“They ’ve also taken statues of the GodGanesha and Goddess Lakshmi which arereally important to our Hindu faith. Theyare symbolic of good fortune and positivityin the home and so by taking these statuesthe thieves have taken away our symbolsof hope.

“It’s taken us a while to get together pic-tures of what was stolen from us becausesome of the pieces of jewellery haven’tbeen worn for a while so we have neededto go through our old photo albums to findever ything.

“Now that these pictures have beenreleased I’d ask anyone who may knowanything about the burglary to pleasecome forward to try and help my familyand I regain what we have lost.”

One of the men was described as a whiteman, skinny and tall with dark coloured

eyes. He was wearing a black face mask,black boots, a beanie hat, beige tracksuittop bottoms and gloves.

A second man was described as havingcurly hair and wearing a full green, pinkand black face mask.

The men are believed to have left thescene in a blue car.

Detective Inspector Tony O’Brien said:“This was a disgraceful crime which hashad a lasting impact on the victim.

“Many of the items stolen are family heir-looms with a great deal of sentimentalvalue.

“We are releasing images of some ofthese very distinctive items and would askanyone who has seen any of the items, ormay have been offered them for sale or asa gift, to contact us.

“Although some time has passed sincethe incident, as the victim has needed timeto gather images of all the items stolen, wewould urge anyone who has seen the itemsor has any information to let us know.”

Man held over £10m drugs seizureTHREE men, including one fromAintree, have been charged in rela-tion to the seizure of drugs worthmore than £10million in an opera-tion by the Organised CrimePartnership (OCP)– a team ofofficers from the National CrimeAgency and Metropolitan PoliceService.

OCP officers seized 109kg ofcocaine and 15kg of heroin afterraiding an industrial unit inEnfield, north London, on April 27.

The drugs had a street value of

£10,220,000. The accused havebeen charged with conspiracy tosupply Class A drugs andremanded to appear at WoodGreen Crown Court on May 17.

They are: Antonio Monobianco,42, of Wanstead, London formerlyEnfield, London; Levi Howarth,25, of Barnsley, formerly Wake-field,, and David Owens, 61, ofPreston, formerly of Aintree.

Seven other men arrested in thesame operation have beenreleased under investigation.

Healthcare firm expands into formerVe r n o n’s Pools site creating 25 jobsPREVENTATIVE healthcarecompany PAM Group hasdoubled the warehouse capa-city for its specialist retailbusiness with a £3millioninvestment in new premiseson Aintree, which will createmore than 20 jobs.

PAM Group has acquired For-tune House, a 30,750sq ftwarehouse on the Sefton Busi-ness Park which was built in1989 as a call centre for Ver-n o n’s Pools.

The site on Deltic Wayincludes an area earmarkedfor seven smaller units cover-

ing a further 18,700 sq ft.Plans for these additionalunits have been submitted toSefton Council.

The warehouse will be themain storage and distributioncentre for PAM Health, whichsells exercise, fitness, sports,ergonomic, physiotherapy andrehabilitation equipment.

Fast-growing PAM Healthsupplies consumers as well asprofessionals such as physio-therapists, and healthcarep ro v i d e r s .

It has expanded throughacquisitions as well as organ-

ically, with revenues on trackto reach £5m this year.

James Murphy, founder andchief executive of PAM Group,said the investment would ini-tially generate 25 new jobsacross PAM Health’s ware-housing, sales and customerservice operations, rising to50 over the next couple ofyears.

Residents donate more than 200shrubs for community woodlandMORE than 200 mature shrubs have beendonated by residents in Maghull to improve acommunity woodland area in the town.

The Friends of Maghull & District made anappeal for woodland themed shrubs and saythey were amazed by the response.

Street garden projectwelcomed by residentsAN innovative environmental project in southSefton which is creating 80 new sustainablestreet gardens has received an enthusiastic wel-come from local residents.

Following introductory sessions at North Park andSouth Park, in Bootle, families quickly took up allthe available spaces in the first phase of the Com-munity Growing Circle project, which involves themin planting out and creating ‘mini farms’ in the nar-row front yards in front of their homes.

The aim of the project is to highlight the benefitsof the circular food economy - growing your ownfood, eating it and then composting the waste tohelp grow more produce.

The project has been established by the TakingRoot in Bootle community gardening network withthe help of a grant from the Liverpool City RegionCommunity Environment Fund.

Each household taking part in the project receivesa front yard growing starter kit which includes pots,troughs, a water butt and a kitchen caddie for col-lecting and transporting food waste to the newcommunity compost bins in the local parks.

The project is also supplying soil, seeds and plantsto enable residents to grow lettuces, spring onions,tomatoes, green beans, carrots, courgettes, raspber-ries and strawberries.

Families have even had the opportunity to requesta dwarf fruit tree and planter to enable them togrow miniature varieties of apples, pears, plums orcherries.

The distribution of the kits started in April, andfamilies are now planting and growing in earnest,with support from the project organisers.

Huge storm tanknow built to reduceflood risk in village

A HUGE underground stormwater storage tank has beencompleted in Melling as apart of a project to reducethe risk of external floodingnear homes.

The tank has been built nextto Dapple Heath Avenue in thevillage as there is a history ofroads and gardens beingflooded there when the localsewers become overloadedduring heavy rainfall.

Built by United Utilities, thetank is 12 meters deep, eightmeters wide, and will be ableto hold 630,000 litres ofw a t e r.

It is part of a £4million majorsewer upgrade project by thefirm to prevent the risk ofexternal flooding.

Mark Walker, from UnitedUtilities, said: “This is a major investment for thearea and the completion of this project will come asvery good news for those householders who haveexperienced the awful problem of flooding fromsewers.

“T h e re ’s no way of doing engineering work of thisscale without causing some temporary disruption.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank thelocal community in the area for their understandingduring our time on site.

“We still have some elements of work to completeand we will continue to speak with residents as we

near the end of this essential project.”A key part of protecting communities across the

borough from flooding is through collaborativework.

United Utilities has recently signed a joint state-ment of intent with Sefton Council and theEnvironment Agency to reassure Maghull com-munities that they are continuing to work togetherto explore solutions to reduce the risk of flooding.

Hospital worker’s booktells of her experiencewith breast cancer

AN inspirational worker from Aintree Hospitalwho won the prestigious title of Employee of theYear was left rocked just days later following abreast cancer diagnosis at the age of 35.

Danielle McDermott, a Patient Experience andEngagement Officer, has now written her own book,Bald, Brave and Bloody Beautiful, detailing herjourney through breast cancer.

The mum-of-one, who lives in Kirkby, checked herbreast just one day before the staff awards ceremonyat St George’s Hall in November 2018. She felt alump, but was unwell with a chest infection andthought nothing of it and fell back asleep.

The next day she won Employee of the Year, along-side being nominated for Innovator of the Year andProfessional Excellence for Life after Stroke for herwork at Aintree Hospital, but still couldn’t shake thefeeling that something wasn’t right.

Danielle said: “Something was just telling me no,check your breast again. And that’s when I definitelycould feel a lump in my left breast.

“I was in the breast clinic at Aintree just four dayslater when I was diagnosed with the devastatingnews of breast cancer.”

At the time of Danielle’s diagnosis, her colleaguesd i d n’t know if it had spread so a biopsy was taken tounderstand more.

Two weeks later she was told she had grade 2invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC), which is cancerthat has started in the cells of the milk duct andspreads to the tissue of the breast

She would need to have a mastectomy and recon-struction surgery. IDC is the most common form ofbreast cancer.

Danielle said: “I felt my femininity had been takenaway from me when I lost my breast and my hair.

“I didn’t want to lose my hair but I wanted toensure I stayed cancer free and the chemotherapywould improve my chances of a longer life and see-ing my daughter Hollie grow up. It was such adifficult process, and that’s when I said I was goingto write a book.”

Yasemin will use rarecancer diagnosis tofundraise for charity

THE President of MarineFootball Club wants to raiseawareness of a charity that issupporting his wife after shewas diagnosed with a rareform of cancer.

Dave Thompson is hoping toraise the profile of OcuMel UK,which has been helping his wife,Yasemin Thompson.

In 2012, the 49-year-old wasdiagnosed with a very rare eyecancer known as ChoroidalMelanoma, which affects the back of the eyebetween the sclera and the retina.

After going through successful treatment, whichleft her partially blind, she was able to continue liv-ing her life to the fullest.

However, in January this year she was told she hasterminal liver melanoma metastases.

Yasemin wants to mark her upcoming 50th birth-day in July to help raise money for the charity, andso far she has managed to reach more than £5,000.

She said: “Successful treatment options are nolonger available to me as I have lost a large amountof my liver, this is partially due to limited researchinto this rare cancer.

“As I am turning 50 in July, I would love to markthis milestone by asking people to help make a dif-ference and donate whatever you can to OcuMelUK. This charity has needed much research in thisrare form of cancer and in turn this may givepatients a better chance of beating this disease thanthey can do right now.

“This would be a wonderful way for me to saythank you to those who have looked after me over

the years and for me to leavea small legacy behind.”

Dave and Yasemin live inCanterbury where Yaseminworks as the Ophthalmologybooking coordinator for EastKent Hospital.

Dave told The Championthat she was diagnosed withthe terminal condition twodays after Marine hosted Tot-tenham Hotspur in the FACup in January.

What made the treatmentoptions even more limitedwas that Yasemin contractedCOVID -19.

Dave said: “She was diagnosed only two daysafter the Marine vs Spurs game which I attendedand at which I believe I caught Covid-19, which Ialso passed on to her. This set her treatment back afew weeks and gravely affected her immune systemat a time when she needed to be at her strongest.

“She was only able to go through one course oftreatment that could have helped prolong her life alittle, before the doctors said doing more treatmentwould cause additional issues that could shortenher life further. She decided to stay with us and tryand enjoy what time she had with us to the most.

“After all doors of possible treatment trials wereclosed to her, she decided to try and raise funds forthe only charity that supports her condition, butmore importantly to create awareness into the life-ending disease that only affects 200 or 300 a yearin the UK.

“Marine FC and Marine in the Community havebeen great, but as a former Crosby and Sefton resid-ent, I would like to help Yasemin spread the word.”

It calledfor candidates in the mayoralelection to pledge to end pedes-trian deaths and injuries onroads, tackle air pollution, makeschool streets safe and makewalking easier by cutting theclutter on our pavements.

It is time we redesigned ourstreets around people not cars.

It’s truly embarrassing that hecontrives such a specific ‘setup tofail’ scenario of picking a very

short range, last-generationvehicle and then taking a ridicu-lously pessimistic estimate of theremaining range... and still man-ages to be wrong simply throughnot undertaking the most ele-mentary of research to discoverthat IKEA Warrington has severalcharging points, neatly hitting onthe fact that even a very old,short range EV is still sufficientfor his real world use-case.

There are many arguments to

be made against Electric Vehiclesat a societal level, and the ques-tion of how folk in 2-up-2-downhouses so common near Warring-ton will be able to charge is valid,but this is a rather patheticattempt at edginess rather thanan honest attempt at discourse.

I rather suspect the meatballscould have done a better job ofresearching that particular piece.

‘Fossil fool’ must havedowner on electric carsDavid Simister, in his column‘Life on Cars’ urged us not towrite in to complain that hehas an unreasonable downeron electric cars.

Unfortunately David thenwent on to make a fool of him-self by stating that he couldn'tpossibly buy a second handNissan Leaf as it’s estimatedrange of 45 miles wouldn’tallow him to get from South-port to IKEA at Warrington tostock up on meatballs. He saidthat he would run out of bat-tery power ‘somewhere on theM57 on the return trip’.

What David seems to haveoverlooked, through either lackof knowledge or for deliberatemischief making, is that IKEAhas rapid 50kw electric carchargers in the car park and bythe time he had been in andpicked up his meatballs and

had a browse or a coffee his carwould be fully charged ( a ro u n dhalf an hour) and he would gethome without problem.

He also fails to factor in otherrapid chargers within a mile ofIKEA or those on his routeeither via the M6 or Ormskirk,St, Helens etc

to think he’s a fossil fuel cham-pion with a downer on electriccars maybe he should write aproper article with factualinformation to help peoplechoose to drive electric or not.

Glue traps are recommended for indoor use onlyto trap vermin.

Unfortunately the traps are not just being usedindoors and do not discriminate as to what animalsthey trap.

I am writing to askwhat can be done tosafeguard ourdunes - forexample, greaterpolice presence,community/volun-teer fire patrols,installation of CCTVcameras etc.

If action is nottaken soon, I fearthere will be noneof our beautifulsand dunes left.

MOTORSComposer has harder job with BMWthan creating a movie soundtrack!

BMW’S latest M-badged offering sounds like a greatcar – and one that can trace its roots all the wayback to Video Killed The Radio Star.

Wondering what a new arrival from Munich’s best-known purveyors of performance motoring could pos-sibly have to do with a new wave hit from the lateSeventies (which, incidentally, was the first song everplayed by MTV)?

Well, it’s all to do with one of the band’s experts insynthesisers, who’s now been lined up to give yougoosebumps when you put your foot down.

Even if you’ve never heard of Hans Zimmer and youa re n’t old enough to remember The Buggles, you’llprobably know his work.

The German composer and record producer is bestknown for his work on film soundtracks, adding hisaural expertise to more than 150 movies. The Lion King.Gladiator. Pirates of the Caribbean. Inception. Dunkirk.Blade Runner 2049. If you’ve seen any of them at yournearest multiplex, then you’ll have heard Hans Zim-mer ’s handiwork first-hand.

But now he’s been given a far tougher gig than doing

the score for The Dark Knight– convincing carenthusiasts that they’ll enjoy an electric model justas much as a petrol one.

BMW knows all too well that the howl of, say, anE46-generation M3’s perfectly tuned straight six isone of the key sources behind the car’s enjoyment,and that if it isn’t careful all of its go-faster offeringscould end up sounding like depressed milk floats by2030. So, it’s handed over to Hans to create a syn-thesised soundtrack for its M-badged versions of thei4. That car isn’t due to be launched until later thisyear, so instead I ended up watching a video thatHans and BMW did the other day to show theirworking.

T h e re ’s lots of stuff about being clever with syn-thesisers – although probably not enough to troubleDaft Punk fans – and about how performanceBMWs need to sound explosive, but it was only atthe very end that you got the briefest snippet of howthe i4 M is going to assault your eardrums.

It sounds like…. well, it sounds like a BMW whenyou put your foot down!

Surely, if I were the BMW Group’s creative directorfor sound (and yes, that job title really does exist),I’d be wanting Hans to come up with something thateasily tops his work on Te n e t .

If the i4 M’s going to be the first performanceBMW to have its own score, I’d want it to sound likethe best bits of an Aston Martin V12, an Alfa RomeoV6 and a Lotus Twin Cam, depending on whatmood you’re in and which part of the rev rangeyou’re exploring. Or, given that Hans is world classwhen it comes to synthesisers, something that easilyoutdoes anything Bronski Beat could manage. OrThe Buggles, for that matter.

BMW were never going to be there first with anelectric performance car, as Tesla chucked its towelon that deckchair years ago. But it can at least makeit sound better than anyone else can.

We then expanded further to Lytham to allow us tocover more of the North West. We are one of the oldest family businesses in Southport and currently have the fourth generation of Molloys working within the business.
