THEY WERE MY FRIENDS JACK, BOB & TED MY LIFE IN POLITICS

TUESDAY, JANUARY 16 • 2:30 - 3:30 PMDoherty will be visiting The Center to share stories from his book, followed by a conversational question and answer segment. Hear about Doherty’s rare, first-hand account of the behind the scenes work that lead to some of the most influential moments of the Kennedy brothers’ political lives and how the son of a Boston Firefighter got to be in the middle of it all. Doherty weaves his unlikely rise to the top of Massachusetts political leadership and how he became the man behind the Kennedy political machine at key points in history. Books will be available for purchase.

“BARBRA STREISAND, HELLO GORGEOUS!”PRESENTED BY BRUCE HAMBRO

FRIDAY, JANUARY 5 • 2:00 - 3:00 PMWe have invited Bruce back for a new Barbra Streisand presentation. Streisand is one of a kind—totally unique! She is the best-selling female recording artist of all time, and has won every award that show business can bestow: Grammy, Tony, Emmy, and Oscar. This program covers Barbra’s unlikely and glorious rise to fame.

In this audio-visual lecture, the audience will hear Barbra’s signature songs: Happy Days are Here Again; People; The Way We Were; You Don’t bring me Flowers; and many more. Hundreds of images will be seen during the powerpoint presentation as well as video clips from concerts, TV shows, and movies such as Funny Girl, Yentl, and A Star is Born.

LAUGH FOR THE HEALTH OF ITTUESDAY, JANUARY 9 • 2:30 - 3:30 PM

Trevor Smith will deliver a program that focuses on using the applications of laughter to improve our health and well-being.

In this workshop, participants will learn a systematic method of chuckles, chortles, giggling, and guffawing that promises to help reduce stress, prevent hardening of the attitudes, and contribute to world peace. The laughter routine, designed to make anyone feel better, works without using jokes or comedy to stimulate the laughter. “There can be many sensitive issues around humor, such as people not getting jokes or being offended by them,” Smith said. “So we skip jokes altogether. We laugh with each other, never at each other. The sounds of genuine happiness-and-health-boosting laughter ring out and roll on.”

Thanks to the generous support of Wingate Healthcare, there is no charge for this program.

SHINE BULLETINWITH MEDICARE PLANS, DOES IT MATTER WHICH PHARMACY YOU USE?

YES, THE PHARMACY YOU USE COULD MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE IN THE COST OF YOUR DRUGS!

All Medicare drug plans and Medicare Advantage plans (HMOs, PPOs) have network pharmacies. Most pharmacies accept most plans. However, if you go to a pharmacy that is not in your plan’s network, your drugs will not be covered, and you will pay full retail price.

For 2018, there are 22 Medicare drug plans and all of them have preferred pharmacies. In addition, several Medicare Advantage plans also have preferred pharmacies. By using a preferred pharmacy, you may save money! Please note that there are significant changes to preferred pharmacies this year. The plan and/or pharmacy that worked well for you last year may not be the best option for 2018!! You should check that the pharmacy you currently use is the best one to use with your plan.

For further assistance with any Medicare issue, contact the SHINE Program. Trained SHINE volunteers offer free, confidential counseling on all aspects of Medicare and related health insurance programs. To schedule a SHINE appointment, call your local Senior Center. For other SHINE related matters, call 1-800-AGE-INFO (1-800-243-4636), then press or say 3. Once you get the SHINE answering machine, leave your name and number. A volunteer will call you back, as soon as possible.

DIRECTOR’S LETTERLetter from LaTanya

“What’s your New Year’s resolution?” According to Wikipedia, A New Year’s resolution is a tradition, most common in the Western Hemisphere but also found in the Eastern Hemisphere, in which a person resolves to change an undesired trait or behavior, to accomplish a personal goal or otherwise improve their life.

The best news is you really don’t have to stick to them. I never do. I just need to convince myself to modify my habits for an improved future. I start my New Year with resolutions…spend time with family, eat healthier and exercise more.

After I created such a lengthy list, I can then forget about it and return to my old self in a few days. Please don’t take resolutions so serious!

Happy New Year!!!

FEBRUARYFebruary is upon us, and it’s due to be a packed month. With the Super Bowl, Valentine’s Day, and Mardi Gras quickly approaching, you need to shake off the winter blues fast and get ready to celebrate.

The name “February” comes from the latin term “februarius mensis,” referring to a month of purification. The Roman calendar was changed in 700 bc to include January and February, then called februarius, and have a longer year, according to timeanddate.com.

I hope you all had a pleasant holiday season and a wonderful start to 2018.

Throughout the month, we will be celebrating a number of occasions, such as Groundhog Day, Valentine’s Day, Presidents’ Day, and Black History Month. One can only hope that Punxsutawney Phil does not see that shadow of his, and we can see an end to this cold winter weather.

FRIENDS OF THE CENTER AT THE HEIGHTS DONATIONS

Dear friends:

Thank you everyone who gave an extra donation with membership and a donation in memory of a friend or family member. We also want to thank Jackie Julian-Martin for a wonderful job in selecting and planning the trips program last year. The next trip will be in the spring. Watch for details. We also want to thank Judi Finkle for managing and buying merchandise for the gift shop.

We had a wonderful year in 2017 as we supported the staff and volunteers at the center and our new programs and services. As expected, our expenses have increased and there is more demand for the senior compass, for which we cover the printing and mailing expenses. The compass provides you with all the important details on the center’s programs, classes, entertainment, enrichment events, fitness center hours and more. We need your support more than ever!

Please fill out the form below for 2018 membership and we would truly appreciate it if you would consider including an additional donation.

We hope you had a happy and healthy holiday season. Happy New Year!
