AMERICA’S GREAT DIVIDE

THE RISE AND REIGN OF JEFF BEZOS

Jeff Bezos is not only one of the richest men in the world, he has built a business empire that is without precedent in the history of American capitalism. His power to shape everything from the future of work to the future of commerce to the future of technology is unrivaled. As politicians and regulators around the world start to consider the global impact of Amazon—and how to reign in Bezos’ power—FRONTLINE investigates how he executed a plan to build one of the most influential economic and cultural forces in the world. With interviews of current and former insiders as well as regulators and critics, this film raises important questions about Jeff Bezos and the empire he built. 2x60, 1x120 HD

McCarthy chronicles the rise and fall of Joseph McCarthy, the Senator who tested the limits of American decency and democracy. Free of restraint or oversight, he conducted a crusade against those he accused of being Communists and enemies of the state, a chilling campaign marked by groundless accusations, bullying intimidation, grandiose showmanship and cruel victimization. Finally, after years in the headlines, he was brought down by his own excesses and overreach. He died a broken man, but his name lived on. NATURAL HISTORY

Sixty-six million years ago, an asteroid slammed into Earth, bringing the dinosaurs’ reign to a fiery end. But from this catastrophe, tiny mammal survivors were able to emerge from the shadows and flourish. Today we live in the age of mammals, with a staggering array of species, from lions to bats to whales. But how did our predecessors evolve so rapidly and diversify into the range of creatures we know today? An astonishing new trove of fossils is finally providing some answers. NOVA takes you to Colorado, where fossils hidden inside ordinary-looking rocks provide a dramatic picture of how life rebounded in the first million years after the asteroid impact. They show how plants and animals evolved together, and how rat-sized mammals—safe from dinosaurs’ jaws—ballooned in size at an astounding rate. What the fossils tell us may transform our understanding of our fellow mammals—and how life can recover after a mass extinction. 1x53 HD

Mama Twiga in the Garden of EdenSince prehistoric times, there has been a place in the Serengeti where giraffes are permanent residents. They now share their grounds with the local impalas, Thomson’s gazelles and Grant’s gazelles. These new inhabitants live in constant danger from predators such as cheetahs, leopards, lions and hyenas, but adult giraffes are relatively safe. The giraffes’ offspring, however, are not as lucky. Mama Twiga in the Garden of Eden tells the emotional story of a mother giraffe, Mama Twiga, and the struggles of young giraffes and gazelles as they take on the risks of growing in the wilds of Swahili. 1x50 HD

Saving the Dead Sea There’s no place on Earth like it. Cleopatra attributed her beauty to its secrets and King Herod built one of the world’s first health spas on its shores. Now this wonder of the world is dying. Since 1976, its level has declined by more than 65 feet. Its coastline is pockmarked with thousands of sinkholes. Can the Dead Sea be saved? After more than a decade of research and debate, scientists, engineers and political leaders have come up with a daring plan, one that could not only save the sea but help bring stability to a region rife with conflict. NOVA follows this unprecedented endeavor as scientists and engineers race to save the Dead Sea and help bring water to one of the driest regions on Earth. 1x54 HD

Something In The AirPollution is killing tens of thousands of people every day around the world. Cities across Asia and Europe have had to shut down and stop traffic to manage “Airpocalypse” pollution events when the air is unsafe for the people who live there. But air pollution is a major killer everywhere, even places we think of as safe. Pollution causes a range of respiratory diseases, and even short exposure can change how our DNA functions. New science is finding that microscopic bits of air pollution may be able to travel from your nose directly into your brain, and could be causing dementia in humans. How unsafe is the pollution we can’t even see? Something in the Air explores these and other questions about the most precious resource we have—air. 1x52 HD

They not only reveal that early Judaism was far richer and more varied than previously thought, but also hold vital clues to the birth of Christianity. But who compiled them and do more scrolls await discovery? While certain scrolls have survived intact, others have been ravaged by time—burnt, decayed, or torn into pieces—and remain an enigma. Now, scientists are using new technologies to read the unreadable, solve mysteries that have endured for millennia, and even discover million-dollar fakes! Decoding da VinciLeonardo da Vinci was the quintessential Renaissance man, accomplished in engineering, fine art, and biology, among other disciplines. Today, his centuries-old “inventions” seem to predict our modern age: contraptions similar to parachutes, army tanks, hang gliders, and robots fill his notebooks. But the man and the techniques behind masterpieces like “Mona Lisa” remain a mystery. On the 500th anniversary of da Vinci’s death, NOVA goes to Italy to explore his life and work. Then, in the basement of the Louvre, scientists and art restoration experts deploy cutting-edge technology to (digitally) peel back the layers of da Vinci’s works. Ultimately, they’ll reveal the impact of his science on his art and his art on his science. 1x55 HD

Rise of the RocketsWe may be witnessing the dawn of a bold new era of human activity in space for science and exploration—but also for profit. An explosion of private companies is sparking the development of new technologies and lowering costs to bring space closer than ever. And at the same time, NASA is returning to crewed spaceflight with gusto, building a rocket more powerful even than the storied Saturn V to take us far beyond Earth. But this is not the first time we’ve seen signs of a rocketry renaissance. In the 1980s, there was a boom—and bust—in the privatization of space travel. Will today’s optimism about companies like SpaceX and Virgin Galactic prove prescient, or nothing more than hype and wishful thinking? 1x54 HD

Despite the constant news of violence, from mass shootings to wars, psychologist Steven Pinker believes we may be living in one of the most peaceful periods in human existence. Could it be true that physical violence has been in decline for centuries? And can it be prevented—or is it simply part of human nature? NOVA takes you on a journey through history and the human mind to explore what triggers violence and how it may have decreased over time. Taking clues from a Kenyan archaeology site, modern laboratory experiments, and even literature, researchers trace the social and neurobiological roots of human violence. They look at how individual forces, like income equality or personal contact through sports may curb violence in modern societies. And in places like Baltimore, where violence “interrupters” treat violence like a contagious disease, NOVA examines evidence-based approaches to making the world more peaceful. 2x54, 1x115 HD

Donald Trump has made opposition to immigration the signature policy of his presidency, and used anti-immigration fervor to animate his supporters and fuel a political movement. Drawing on nearly 40 lengthy, on-camera interviews, this documentary describes how Steve Bannon, Stephen Miller and Jeff Sessions saw in the Trump candidacy a chance to roll back immigration—and how they have waged a war inside the White House to keep an unpredictable president on course. Zero Tolerance shows that while Trump rode to power amid a chorus of “Build the Wall,” behind the scenes the president was an unreliable ally on implementing key anti-immigration plans. As the president waffled, Miller, Sessions and Bannon played the central role in bringing their “imperfect instrument” back into line. It’s a must-watch look at how America’s immigration policies—and the rhetoric and images surrounding them—reached this moment. 1x54 HD

Fire in ParadiseOn November 8, 2018, the deadliest and most destructive fire in California history began. By the time it would finally be extinguished, the fast-moving Camp Fire had burned an area the size of Chicago, destroyed approximately 30,000 homes, decimated the town of Paradise, and killed 85 people. Fire in Paradise shares tales of both miraculous escape and unfathomable loss—and raises tough questions about who and what are to blame for the fire’s catastrophic toll, drawing on firsthand accounts from survivors, first responders, and local authorities, as well as harrowing footage filmed by those in the path of the inferno. Fire in Paradise examines how climate change has contributed to making fires bigger and more frequent. 1x54 HD

On The Presidents OrdersIn 2016, President Rodrigo Duterte announced a “war on drugs” in the Philippines, launching a wave of violence and murder targeting thousands of suspected drug dealers and users. With unprecedented, intimate access both to police officials implicated in the killings and the families destroyed as the result of Duterte’s deadly campaign, On the President’s Orders is a shocking and revelatory investigation into the extrajudicial murders that continue to this day. Entering a murky world of crime, drugs and politics, the filmmakers have captured the clear trajectory of what depths those who wield excessive power can reach, when attacking those who have the very least. 1x54, 1x71 HD

Trump’s Trade WarPresident Donald Trump’s decision to put tariffs on billions of dollars in Chinese imports in 2018 shocked the world—and launched a perilous confrontation between the world’s two largest economic superpowers. From FRONTLINE producer Rick Young and his team and NPR correspondent Laura Sullivan, Trump’s Trade War takes viewers on the ground in both the U.S. and China, drawing on business and government insider accounts to offer an eye-opening look at the increasingly competitive rivalry between the two countries—a rivalry that extends well beyond just trade and tariffs. 1x54 HD

The FeudThe feud between the Hatfields and McCoys is perhaps the most famous family conflict in American history. As legend has it, two neighboring families in the backwoods of Appalachia waged a crude and bloody war against each other over a stolen hog, an illicit romance, and longstanding grudges. Once it started, there was nothing to stop the spiral of murder: no social mores against violence, no legal or political institutions in control, no personal religious values holding people back. Yet as this program reveals, the legend belies the truth. Both the Hatfields and McCoys were entrepreneurs seeking to climb up from hardship after fierce economic competition and rapid technological change had turned their lives upside down. When members of both families took their grievances to court, their dispute grew into a struggle between two states. Far from an isolated story of mountain lust and violence between “hillbillies,” the Hatfield-McCoy feud was a microcosm of the tensions inherent in the nation’s rapid industrialization after the Civil War. 1x60 HD

By the close of the Industrial Revolution, the American food supply was tainted—by frauds, fakes and legions of new, untested chemicals—all threatening the health of consumers across the country. Based on the critically acclaimed book by Deborah Blum, The Poison Squad tells the story of crusading government chemist Harvey Washington Wiley, the man who led the pure food movement against the food manufacturing industry in the early years of the twentieth century, embarking upon a series of bold and controversial trials on twelve human subjects—who would become known as the “Poison Squad.” Wiley’s experiments and tireless advocacy laid the groundwork for the United States’ consumer protection laws, and ultimately the creation of the FDA. 2x60, 1x120 HD

WoodstockIn August 1969, nearly half a million people gathered at a farm in upstate New York to hear music. What happened over the next three days, however, was far more than a concert. It would become a legendary event, one that would define a generation and mark the end of one of the most turbulent decades in modern history. Woodstock: Three Days That Defined a Generation turns the lens back at the audience, at the swarming, impromptu city that grew up overnight on a few acres of farm land. 1x82, 1x99 HD

The SwampOnce more than 100 miles long and 60 miles wide, the impenetrable grass, water and wildlife of the Everglades originally covered most of south Florida. One journalist decried it as a “vast and useless marsh.” Today, the area is home to seven million residents, 40 million annual tourists and the world’s largest concentration of golf courses. The Swamp tells the dramatic story behind this transformation, examining the history, ecological collapse, and potential resurrection of one of the Earth’s largest and most unique ecosystems. The Swamp recounts the work of the politicians, businessmen and engineers who transformed the Everglades and cleared the way for the development that would ultimately destroy it, as well as the activists who sounded the alarm about its future and lobbied for its preservation and revival. 1x114 HD

HISTORY

Memory of the CampsIn the spring of 1945, Allied forces liberating Europe found evidence of atrocities which have tortured the world’s conscience ever since. As the troops entered the German concentration camps, they made a systematic film record of what they saw. Assembled and edited that summer under the supervision of the British Ministry of Information and the American Office of War Information, some of the documentary editing was done under the direction of Alfred Hitchcock—but the film was left unfinished. FRONTLINE found it stored in a vault of London’s Imperial War Museum and, in 1985, broadcast it for the first time. Thirty-five years later, Memory of the Camps remains one of the most definitive and unforgettable records of the 20th century’s darkest hour. 1x57 HD

The WarThe War, a seven-part series directed and produced by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick, explores the most intimate human dimensions of the greatest cataclysm in history: a worldwide catastrophe that touched the lives of every family on every street in every town in America and demonstrates that in extraordinary times, there are no ordinary lives. Throughout the series, the indelible experience of combat is brought vividly to life as veterans describe what it was like to fight and kill and see men die at places like Monte Cassino and Anzio and Omaha Beach; the H’rtgen Forest and the Vosges Mountains and the Ardennes; and on the other side of the world at Guadalcanal and Tarawa and Saipan; Peleliu and the Philippine Sea and Okinawa. In all of the battle scenes, dramatic historical footage and photographs are combined with extraordinarily realistic sound effects to give the film a terrifying, visceral immediacy. 14x60 HD

D-Day 360Focusing on the most important strip of Omaha beach that day—the exit at Vierville-sur-Mer—D-DAY 360 strips D-Day back to its raw data to reveal how the odds of victory, in the greatest gamble of World War II, swung on what happened over a five-hour period on a five mile stretch of French coastline. Data gathered though forensic laser scanning, 3D computer modeling, and eye-witness accounts bring the battlefield to life as never before. 1x54 HD

The Rape of EuropaThe Rape of Europa tells the epic story of the systematic theft, deliberate destruction, and miraculous survival of Europe’s art treasures during the Third Reich and World War II. In a journey through seven countries, the film takes viewers into the violent whirlwind of fanaticism, greed, and warfare that threatened to wipe out the artistic heritage of Europe. For twelve long years, the Nazis looted and destroyed art on a scale unprecedented in history. But heroic young art historians and curators from America and across Europe fought back with an extraordinary campaign to rescue and return the millions of lost, hidden, and stolen treasures. Now, more than sixty years later, the legacy of this tragic history continues to play out as families of looted collectors recover major works of art, conservators repair battle damage, and nations fight over the fate of ill-gotten spoils of war. 2x54 HD

The Siege of MeccaOn November 20, 1979, hundreds of heavily armed men took over the Grand Mosque of Mecca. Within minutes, they transformed the holiest shrine of Islam into a fortress—and a trap for almost 100,000 pilgrims inside. The ensuing 15 days of battle cost hundreds, if not thousands, of lives, shook Saudi Arabia to its foundations, destabilized the Middle East and pushed the global balance of power to the brink of collapse. After more than five years of research, with exclusive access to first-hand accounts and private archives from Arab, French, German and American military, intelligence and civilian sources, this film finally reveals what really happened during the siege, what consequences it had and how it still affects the world today. 1x52, 1x90 HDSUFI/SHUTTERSTOCK

SealabOn a February day in 1969, off the shore of northern California, a U.S. Navy crane carefully lowered 300 tons of metal into the Pacific Ocean. The massive tubular structure was an audacious feat of engineering—a pressurized underwater habitat, complete with science labs and living quarters for an elite group of divers who hoped to spend days or even months at a stretch, living and working on the ocean floor. The Sealab project would push the limits of ocean exploration the same way NASA was pushing the limits of space exploration. As Americans were becoming entranced with the effort to land a man on the moon, these divers, including one of NASA’s most famous astronauts, were breaking depth barrier records underwater. Sealab tells the little-known story of the daring program that tested the limits of human endurance and revolutionized the way humans explore the ocean. 1x53 HD

Boss: The Black Experience in BusinessThe history of business and entrepreneurship lies at the heart of the American story, but often absent are the names and experiences of African Americans who, from the country’s earliest days, have embodied the qualities of innovation, risk-taking and determination to forge a path toward a better life—which is at the heart of the American entrepreneurial spirit. Boss: The Black Experience in Business, by Peabody and Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Stanley Nelson, seeks to illuminate, educate, and inform, by examining more than 150 years of African American men and women—from those bound by bondage, to moguls at the top of multi-million dollar empires. 2x54, 1x112 HD

Charley Pride: I’m Just MeCharley Pride stands as a symbol of hope and an example of the ways music can influence societal change. He arrived in Nashville in 1963, a year in which the Tennessee capital was the site of sit-ins and racial violence. Two years later, he was a recording artist on a major label, and in short time he became a superstar whose path would lead him to a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and a place in the Country Music Hall of Fame. Charley Pride’s story is a lesson in the ways that art and expression can triumph over prejudice and defeat injustice. Raised as less than a citizen in brutally segregated Mississippi, Charley Pride’s buttery voice and steely resolve helped him to a place as one of the world’s most impactful musical artists. 1x53, 1x78 HD
