Siyaqhuba shuts down illegal businessesSenior offi cials from a number of metro departments took to the Streets of Springs last Thursday as part of Siyaqhuba.
Siyaqhuba, which means moving forward, was an initiative put into place, in January, by mayor Mzwandile Masina during his fi rst 100 days in offi ce.
The campaign seeks to ensure that service delivery issues are responded to rapidly.
The group visited numerous sites in Springs, and infrastructure services MMC Robert Mashego says he was appalled when he visited some of the business sites in the area which were not complying with by-laws.
He demanded that the Springs Hotel and a tavern in First Street be shut down after they were found to be operating illegally.
They discovered that the hotel was registered, but rendering illegal services.
"We found illicit activities of prostitution, illegal gambling and various businesses operating on the premises.
"This is unacceptable and they must face the consequences.
"The hotel will remain
closed until the owner complies with the registration criteria," he says.
Mashego ordered the EMPD, who were present, to immediately shut it down.
He also shut down a tavern because it didn't have an operating licence.
The team then addressed numerous other problems including potholes, blocked storm water drains and the fi lth visible at the main taxi rank.
Mashego says the taxi rank is operating illegally on the premises and he asked the offi cials on site to look into the poor conditions at rank.
"We are not going to tolerate the poor conditions of the taxi rank whether it is on private or public land, it must be looked after.
"This is a matter of urgency because it puts the lives of the drivers and commuters in danger
The MMC was also concerned about a betting place in Second Street which renovated the building inside and outside but could not provide building plans.
A notice was served to the owner of the business to provide plans within 28 days or face the law.

Police successes
Springs police have raised concerns about photos or videos of suspects posted on social media platforms.
SAPS spokesman Capt Johannes Ramphora says the risk associated with this is that it may have a negative impact on judicial procedures.
"It is an invasion of their privacy even though they are a suspect in a crime," he says.
Ramphora says pictures or videos posted of suspects are illegal as the suspects are innocent in the eyes of the law.
"It may damage the reputation of the person or people accused and open doors for possible legal
action taken against the person who posted the picture or video," he says.
While images posted may be used to combat crime, the opposite may occur as a result.
These are some of the repercussions:
• A SAPS identity parade will not be conclusive: It may be argued that the witness or victim saw the suspect's face on social media and identifi ed the suspect based on the image portrayed rather than physically having seen the suspect commit the crime.
• The suspect may not be charged for the criminal incident.
• Posts may teach
individuals how to commit a crime: Ramphora says this results in criminal incidents being committed by individuals who may not have attempted to commit crimes before viewing how it can be successfully done.
• Pictures or videos may alert the suspect and their accomplices that the police are aware of who they are: This may lead to the the suspects fl eeing without being caught.
Ramphora's advice is to rather allow the police to do their work, with the community's assistance, in a proper manner instead of the public jeopardising police investigations.
Posting suspect's pics could hamper justice
The body of a 21-year-old man was found in First Street, in the CBD, at 7pm, on Wednesday.
Police were conducting routine patrols when they were stopped by emergency services members who
informed them about a body they had found near the Springs Station.
Capt Johannes Ramphora, Springs SAPS spokesman, says the body had a stab wound to the right shoulder.
Paramedics declared the man dead at the scene.
According to the police, the deceased was identifi ed by his brother as Khendevu Mabena.
Police are investigating a case of murder.

Two robbery victims and their neighbours chased three robbers away last week.
The son of a 54-year-old woman raised the alarm when he heard their glass door being broken on Tuesday.
The incident took place at 11.20pm in First Avenue, Welgedacht.
Springs SAPS spokesman Capt Johannes Ramphora says the mother
and son (age unknown) asked the robber, "What do you want?"
When the robber asked for money, the woman offered to give him cash.
"However, they soon realised the robber wasn't alone when they heard the sound of falling glass," says Ramphora.
The family ran to a bedroom, broke the window and escaped.
Ramphora says they then
ran to their neighbours and called for help.
The mother and son returned with their neighbour's sons (ages unknown), who chased the three robbers away.
The robbers took two cellphones and an iPad valued at R18 000.
Police found the plastic pipe that was used to break the glass door on the scene.
A house robbery case is being investigated.

The murder and attempted murder case against the Springs policewoman, who lives in KwaThema, who allegedly poisoned her two children last year, was postponed in the Springs Regional Court last Tuesday.
The case was postponed to March 27.
KwaThema police spokesman Capt Thabo Sibuyi says the case was
referred to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
The mother is being accused of allegedly feeding her two children, aged four years and 10 months, rat poison mixed with yoghurt, before poisoning herself, at her home in KwaThema on September 1.
The three of them were taken to a nearby hospital, but the woman’s 10-month-
old baby died en route.The woman’s R2 000 bail
was extended.“She was granted bail at
her fi rst court appearance on September 16, two weeks after she was discharged from hospital,” says Sibuyi.
He says the policewoman is allowed to see her four-year-old son under the supervision of a social worker.

SAPS and business sector meetSprings police hosted a successful safety and security meeting with the Springs business sector last Wednesday.
The aim of the meeting was to put in place a structure for the commercial and industrial business sector of Springs.
The police recently contacted Anita Greeff, general manager of the Eastern Gauteng Chamber of Commerce, to request the meeting which she then organised, inviting all chamber members.
She says the meeting was well attended by all the larger industries in Springs.
A number of problems experienced by businesses were raised, with the police, by representatives of businesses.
Col Doctor Mtimkulu, the head of Visible Policing (Vispol), and his team of sector managers and Crime Intelligence were present.
SAPS spokesman Capt Johannes Ramphora says to form a good relationship with the business sector, they need their cooperation.
Mike du Toit, chairman of the Springs Community Police Forum, who chaired the meeting, says the exchange between SAPS and business was frank and open and covered areas ranging from customer service centre problems to non-enforcement of by-laws, as well as the drug culture taking hold in Springs' streets.
He suggested that businesses organise themselves into a safety and
security forum along the lines of the existing neighbourhood and sector CPFs.
"They should do it under the auspices of the chamber, which will be able to fi ll the role of secretariat for the organisation," he says.
The forum should then elect a chairman and small committee that would represent business at the Springs Precinct CPF.
Du Toit says although the meeting consisted mainly of representatives of large
companies, they urge small businesses to get involved as well.
Ramphora supports the idea of the establishment of the suggested safety and security forum.
"The outcome of this meeting means that the businesses are interested in working with the police in their fi ght against crime," he says.
For more information contact Greef at the chamber on 011 815 5750.
Col Doctor Mtimkulu, head of Vispol (left), thanking the business sector representatives for their input during the meeting. Anita Greeff, general manager of the Eastern Gauteng Chamber of Commerce and Industry, notes the key points discussed at the meeting.
Natalie de Beer has a hole in her arm which she believes is the result of blood samples being taken with a dirty needle.
"My arm started to swell less than a week after I visited Far East Rand Hospital (FERH) on February 9 and soon thereafter, a blister formed," she says.
The 25-year-old epilepsy sufferer recently went to have blood tests done at the hospital and claims a regular check-up turned into a nightmare.
She alleges the nurses couldn’t fi nd a vein in her left arm and chose to look for another vein on the side of the same arm.
“The needle pricks left red marks which soon caused swelling and redness on my arm,” she says.
She noticed a blister forming at the spot where the second needle prick was and went back to the hospital to have it checked out.
De Beer, who lives in Brakpan, was asked to return the next day to have a doctor look at the blister, which the nursing staff allegedly said it was a spider bite.
She says her arm was swollen and quite painful as the blister burst and formed quite a large hole.
When she returned the next day a doctor on duty allegedly gave her local anaesthetic and cleaned the wound.
She claims the doctor informed her that it was indeed a spider bite.
“However, it is not, as I know for a fact that the hole is exactly where the nurses drew blood from my arm,” says de Beer.
De Beer was asked to return two days later to have the wound cleaned again, but instead she was taken to a private doctor.
The hole allegedly got bigger and she claims since a private doctor treated the wound, it looks substantially better.
“It is scary to think that there is a
hole as big as a R5 coin in my arm but at least the wound is almost healed,” she says.
FERH spokesman Hendrik Buda confi rms de Beer's visit to the hospital.
She was seen by the doctor on duty, given treatment to take home and was referred to the medical
outpatients department to be seen by a specialist.
"We advise the patient to honour this appointment in order for the doctors to address whatever medical concerns she has.
"She can contact me and I will ensure she is referred to the relevant doctor," says Buda.
Needle prick leaves big hole in woman’s arm
Natalie de Beer (25) shows the hole in her arm which she claims is less painful and much better since she visited a private doctor.
Natalie de Beer claims a doctor at Far East Rand Hospital recently cleaned the wound which left a hole in her arm the size of a R5 coin.
Once the blister burst on Natalie de Beer’s arm, it formed a hole.

Residents who travel on Ermelo Road are unhappy about potholes not being fi xed by the metro.
Spokesman for the metro Themba Gadebe recently commented on a previous query on potholes that the metro fi xes potholes as they are reported.
But, says Casseldale resident Magda Pretorius" "Ermelo potholes require proper repairs and not patchwork."
She uses Ermelo Road frequently during her travels and feels that it has been left too long without repairs.
"The patchwork doesn't last long because surface preparations are not conducted properly by the metro or their contractors," she says.
Gadebe reported in September that the roads department does regular maintenance of the town’s
roads."However, if this was the
case, then why are there so many potholes in Springs?" asks Pretorius.
To report potholes contact the metro call centre on 086 054 3000.
No comment had been received from the metro at the time of going to print.
Pallo Sello (47) cleans the man-made cul-de-sac in Sheiba Road, Selcourt, on a daily basis. “The area looks much prettier when it is cleaned,” he says.

Potholes must be fixed properly
Hitting a pothole can damage your vehicle - and this pothole in Ermelo Road, near Grootvaly Road, Strubenvale, has been there long enough to damage tyres.
Welgedacht residents gathered at the corner of First Avenue and Welgedacht Road to express their dissatisfaction with metro service delivery.
The residents blocked off the intersection with burning tyres on Tuesday morning.
It was a peaceful gathering and the crowd soon moved to the Welgedacht Stadium to discuss a possible march, as they feel they are not being heard when they complain about service delivery.
Welgedacht resident Kutlwano ‘Strawberry’ Ngema says their streets are full of potholes and the street lights are not working properly.
“Some of us have been living here for more than 10 years and this is how long we have been asking for the street lights and potholes to be fi xed,” she says.
Another resident, Sipho Fokazi says: “We don’t even have a park with playground equipment where the family can watch their children play,” he says.
Residents add that there is only one entry and exit to Welgedacht, along First Avenue, where all residents are forced to come to a standstill during peak hour traffi c – mornings and afternoons – waiting to cross the road.
The community signed a petition asking the metro to erect traffi c lights at the intersection of First Avenue and Welgedacht Road in July 2015.
The petition was handed over to ward councillor Dean Stone who claims he handed it over to the metro.
Stone says this is probably one of the busiest intersections in Springs and a robot is defi nitely needed there.
He shares the concerns and frustrations raised by the community regarding the lack of service delivery in the area.
“There were numerous meetings held with the community leaders from Welgedacht.
“We asked Springs Customer Care Centre manager Ace Phiri to have monthly meetings with the leadership to address their concerns.”
He feels optimistic about the future of Welgedacht claiming the parks department will be dealing with the lack of parks for the youth in the area saying construction of parks in the area will start in June.
EMPD and SAPS were also present on Tuesday morning.
Kobeli Mokheseng EMPD spokesman says they are monitoring the area for the safety and security of the community.
The Addie is awaiting response from the metro.

The dying trees on the island at Selcourt Dam and the water stagnation are of great concern to residents.
Selcourt resident Bill Wilson is worried about the high water levels allowing water stagnation, which comes with a smell.
Wilson says the previous aesthetic appeal of the park is spoiled by the number of dead island trees which he believes contributes to the smelly environment of decaying vegetation.
"The wildlife population has declined over the past few years and I believe it is due to the trees on the island which have mostly died," he says.
Environmentalist Stan Madden says trees on the island have died for no apparent reason.
The Springs/Nigel branch of Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (Wessa) has been involved in monitoring this dam as
far back as the '70s.Records of birds have been kept
which shows the dam and island to be a very important breeding site for wild birds.
"In particular, the large herons, cormorants, gulls and waterfowl, including ducks and grebes, breed here," says Madden.
"The dying off of the trees has led to a reduced number of birds breeding but they are now relocating to the trees on the shoreline and therefore not as visible," says Madden.
He says Justin Donaldson, chairman of Wessa, planted a few young trees on the island last year.
"The quality of the water in the dam is at times not good but with the current infl ow of water from Nigel Road, we are hopeful that it will improve," says Madden.
Also of concern to Wessa is the poor fence condition with many
ducks, geese and associated waste food disposal providing other hazards.
Madden says this problem is monitored and has been brought to the attention of Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.
"We need their assistance in removing alien species of mallard ducks which is a serious problem," he says.
The metro was recently seen working in Nigel Road, Selcourt, to improve the Selcourt Dam drainage and overfl ows that create fl ooding hazards along Nigel, Halkyn and Sheiba roads.
Madden says the work was started in November and is still unfi nished.
"The area was left with plastic barriers on the edge of Nigel Road and, three months later, these are still there," he says.
The metro is currently erecting a Clear-Vu fence around the property of the old O'Hagans in Zig Zag Road.
Metro spokesman Themba Gadebe says the fence is being erected for safety and security purposes.
He explains this was done on instructions given by the Ekurhuleni mayor, Clr Mzwandile Masina, after he visited Springs in November.
"Tenders to lease the former O’Hagan’s Pub and Grill building and parking area will be invited as soon as possible after the council has considered a report pertaining to the proposed lease of the said facility," says Gadebe.
Following the mayor's visit, the metro has already cut down a number of blue gum trees.
The area will cleared of all foliage deems to cause a nuisance in the area.
Local business owner Karen Tocher expressed her gratitude
for the metro's quick response. This initiative was made
possible together with the Eastern Gauteng Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
"It already looks stunning and I am sure it will curb illegal dumping as well as prostitution," she says.
Tocher and her Square-up and Clean-up team, which is part of the chamber's Clean Springs initiative, will keep looking after the area by maintaining the garden.
They are going to clean the fl ower beds and plant new fl owers inside the property as soon as possible after the completion of the fence.
"We plan on erecting advertising boards on the corner of Eighth Street and Zig Zag Road and the money raised will go towards the clean-up campaign," says Tocher.
To advertise on these boards contact Tocher on 011 815 5588.

Netcare N17 Hospital hosted a Healthy Lifestyle Awareness Day last Wednesday.
This special free event was held to encourage people in the community to live healthier lifestyles which will make them feel great.
The awareness day was held by the N17 Hospital in partnership with two laboratories, audiologists, a slimming group and various infection protection companies who were on hand to offer advice and guidance.
Hospital manager Andries Joubert says they also offered free blood pressure and blood sugar testing.
"Our focus is to inform the community not only to eat
healthier but also have regular health check-ups done.
"We also want to give something back to the local community by hosting these Wellness Days" he says.
Different stalls where available where experts explained the hygiene procedures of effective sanitising of fi ngers, hands and surfaces in a hospital environment.
Joubert says the same principles of hand hygiene can also be applied at home to help prevent the spreading of germs, especially with the winter months and colds and fl u looming in the not-so-distant future.
The event was held between 9am and noon and free samples of waterless hand sanitisers and pens
were handed out to the visitors.Nigel residents Martie Lezar
(74) and her friend, Henriëtta Heydenrych, found the free basic hearing assessments quite interesting.
"It is wonderful to know that the hospital offers free services to those who don't have medical aids," says Martie.
Margaret Daneman, from Petersfi eld Extension, says the services rendered on the day were excellent and well organised.
Local laboratory representatives, Emarie Vermaak and Hanneli Binneman, say people enjoy the freebies.
"It is simple things that give you a feeling of well-being," says Emarie.

Great attendance at St Mary’s Pregnancy DaySaturday saw more than 100 people celebrating Pregnancy Awareness Day at Life Springs Parkland Hospital’s St Mary’s maternity unit.
Hospital manager Tertia Niemandt says the aim was to make mothers- and fathers-to-be aware of what pregnancy entails.
“The do's and don'ts during pregnancies are quite important,” says Tertia who was surprised at many men joined their partners.
The day was full of surprises with hampers and lucky draws up for grabs.
Midwife Emcé Muller shared
her medical expertise on morning sickness, sleeplessness, heartburn, constipation, healthy eating, backache and swollen feet.
“All of these can be experienced during pregnancy,” she says.
More talks followed on stress during pregnancy, how to feed your baby and infant CPR.
Local physiotherapist Adèle Roets says lower back pain, known as sciatica, can cause severe discomfort during and after pregnancy.
"Hormonal changes to the body also play a huge role and contribute to the discomfort," she
says.More than 20 stall-holders
had plenty to offer the pregnant couples and visitors on the day.
Hospital staff made sure that the guests had something to eat and drink during their visit.
Bakerton resident Poovershree Pillay (35), pregnant with her third child, says the visit was very nice, quite long, but very informative.
"I really enjoyed the morning and feel the maternity staff have done an excellent job.
"There were lots of lucky draws and advice given to us," says Poovershree.
Marlize Retief (left), Adèle Roets and Evette Botha say that during pregnancy more of the hormone relaxin is released. This is a normal process.

Some members of the Springs community are upset to learn that a supermarket in The Avenues Shopping Centre has closed down.
It is believed the supermarket will relocate to the new Springs Mall, which will open on March 16.
Botlhale Galane, from Growthpoint, says while they cannot comment on behalf of the supermarket, they are currently in negotiations with a new food anchor.
Once they have fi nalised an agreement, Growthpoint will share the news with the community on which new supermarket will take the place of the one that has closed down.
“We believe that Springs is a dynamic and diverse community with many consumer markets and we are confi dent that The Avenues and Palm Springs will always be able to offer a valuable shopping experience for the CBD market,” says Galane.

Selcourt Trinity Methodist Church, the only offi cial Cansa Shavathon organiser in Springs, hosted the fundraising event on Sunday.
Organiser Beth Adamson says she is not sure if the weather was to blame for the low turnout, but they still raised about R10 000 on Sunday.

Rev Charlie Wernich is a familiar sight with his long, dark ponytail, which he cuts off every second year for Cansa.

The reverend has been supporting the Cansa Shavathon since he left school.
The shaven hair and ponytails are donated to Cansa.
"Ponytails are used to make wigs for cancer sufferers and it is believed that Cansa also uses the hair shavings for oil spills and to make hair mats," she says.
Beth says the church will defi nitely host the event again next year, giving Charlie another year to grow his hair.
Shavathon supporter Elvine Tait not only sprayed her hair different colours, but also convinced Grace de Gouveia to have a silver butterfl y sprayed onto hers.

Several others also took on the challenge of having their heads shaved or sprayed different colours.

Strubenvale hosted its fi rst Out of Africa Market Day in Madeley Road, on Sunday.
Ilse O'Kelly, a local business woman and organiser of the event, says it is the fi rst of many planned market days for Springs.
She claims she initiated this event because she felt Springs needs regular market days.
She was surprised at how many people supported the market day even though the weather forecast predicted more rain.
Aside from the presence of many interesting stalls, there
was also a good variety of entertainment for the children including go-carting and horse rides in a safe environment.
Tayla Passanah made sure that the children's faces were painted in the characters of their choice.
"I enjoy working with children and seeing the end product of my artwork and the happy faces of the children means a lot," says Tayla.
The next market day is planned for March 25.
Anyone interested in booking a stall can contact Isle on 083 651 1113.

This week's guest columnist is Hosia Sithole, assistant director at the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) (Gauteng Region).
The abandoned mines, which initially brought hope and economic progress to residents of the mining towns in SA, have become an eyesore that is threatening to cause environmental catastrophe and choke life out of these communities by poisoning their water resources.
Despite being one of the backbones of the SA economy, the activities of these defunct mines is causing untold damage to available limited water sources.
Therefore, DWS had to intervene to mitigate the real possibility of water sources being poisoned by the acidic water fl owing from the rising acidic water levels in these unused shafts.
In light of this impending disaster, DWS has had to intervene to prevent what could be one of the most devastating occurrences that would have meant loss of life.
An instance which highlights the danger posed by these disused mines is the one in Springs where the old Grootvlei Mine operated.
Here the acidic water, known as the acid mine drainage (AMD), fl owed into the Blesbokspruit and the Marievale Bird Sanctuary.
The Blesbokspruit forms part of the Vaal River catchment.
It is certain that were it not for the timeous intervention, the upshot of this would have been the contamination of the freshwater fl owing into the
Vaal River System, with dire consequences for the public.
The issue of AMD is therefore a challenge that cannot be a part time exercise by government and the mining sector.
It is an urgent issue that requires immediate attention.
Enjoined by the responsibility imposed on it by the Constitution, DWS has moved swiftly to ensure the lives of the communities living in and around the Grootvlei Mine, situated in the Eastern Basin, are not adversely affected by the acidic water seeping into their fresh water meant for household consumption.
The gravity of the situation posed by AMD puts Gauteng at a dead end as, despite Gauteng being the economic hub of the country, it does not have its own water sources.
Thus, Gauteng is experiencing an unprecedented challenge that is unique compared to other parts of the country.
In mounting an offensive to deal with the results of AMD, minister of water and sanitation, Nomvula Mokonyane, last week launched the Eastern Basin Water Treatment Plant in Springs in an effort to prevent the acidic water from polluting fresh water sources.
The plant is pumps water from the abandoned Grootvlei Mine and controls AMD from fl owing onto the ground.
The main objective is to maintain the AMD water level below the environmental critical levels, thus reducing key environmental risks of contamination of shallow groundwater, fl ooding
underground infrastructure, increased seismic activity, ecological impacts, and regional impacts on major river systems and localised fl ooding in low-lying areas.
The department in partnership with Trans-Caledon Tunnel Authority is striving to augment Gauteng's water supply.
These solutions will cost the department between R10-billion to R12-b.
Speaking during the launch of the plant, Mokonyane said due to the scale of mining in the last century, it has been determined that the impact of the mines on the water resources and the resultant challenges of AMD cannot be avoided and left unattended.
What we should bear in mind is that the department cannot invest its energy and resources alone in mitigating the impact caused by AMD.
Partnerships are needed to ensure a sustainable supply of water for all sectors of society.
Mokonyane said her department has established partnerships with key role players that will remain mindful of the benefi ts of mining, whilst simultaneously appreciating that water resource protection should be at the forefront of every mining venture.
With over a century of AMD due to prolifi c mining, the DWS is making efforts to mitigate the effects of AMD but requires business and civil society organisations to work with them to ensure the protection of our limited and depleting water resources.

OPINION \ SPRINGS ADVERTISER
The Addie asked residents what they thought of the Budget Speech by Minister of Finance Pravin Gordhan last Wednesday. This is what they had to say:
JP Meyer Danie Coetzee Michelle Otto Ashleigh Maartens
“It’s close to impossible to be able to make ends meet when you’re making a respectable living. How do they expect us to pay more for everything?”
“I don’t understand why they always increase the sin taxes so much - it’s already too expensive to buy alcohol and smokes, now we have to pay more.”
“Nothing is affordable anymore and while I’m glad for the social grant increase, the average South African is already struggling as it is.”
“Well honestly, I don’t see how the government expects us to make ends meet if everything is getting more expensive all the time.”

I was forced to watch what they called the ‘budget speech’ last week and wasn’t very impressed. How is a little piglet such as my wondrous self supposed to understand such big, gibberish words mixed with way too many numbers in one row? What a snooze fest. So, I was told that there is very important information in all this blabber and couldn’t for the life of me fi gure out what. I later found out that social grants were increased and that made me very happy. Important info after all. Hopefully more children will be able to go on an Easter egg hunt next month! See, I already started collecting.

The view by Samantha Keogh
I have been the editor of the Springs Advertiser since 2012 and am passionate about the people and news in my community.I believe the communities we serve are the life blood of our industry and love hearing about the amazing things Springsites are doing to put our city on the world stage. While I enjoy reporting on all aspects of this community, my true passion lies with hard news.
Early last Monday morning as the East Rand was waking and preparing for another week, a Benoni man jumped into his car ready to start the day.
However, as he turned on the ignition both the car and the man were engulfed in fl ames and, while he managed to escape, he suffered severe burns and is still in hospital fi ghting for his life.
No, he was not in a Ford and this is not the start of an insensitive joke about the car manufacturer.
In fact, the man involved is Barry McCallum, an ex-colleague and someone I have known for over 20 years who is a son, brother, father and friend to many.
Both he and his older brother, Kevin, perfected their craft (journalism) in the Benoni City Times newsroom where I too started my career, and to say that the brothers are well known in the community is somewhat of an understatement.
The details of Barry's morning are horrifi c.
However, the general manner in which people who do not know him have reacted to it cannot be ignored.
While those he knows have been devastated by the incident and Kevin is receiving hundreds of messages daily wishing Barry strength for his recovery, those who do not know him have not been as sensitive.
When I mentioned it to people I wasn't expecting weeping but I certainly wasn't expecting the callous response: "Oh, was he in a Ford?"
I ignored the fi rst ignoramus and put it down to one woman's lack of compassion.
However, when the fourth person asked much the same question I had to wonder if our desire to berate a brand or spread shocking gossip has started to outweigh our humanity and sense of decency.
The make of his car is surely of little importance when you hear of a burn victim who has suffered devastating wounds and will have to spend months in rehab, and perhaps countless hours in the operating room, on his road to recovery.
Is it really too much to ask that we stop to think about the people affected by an incident before asking stupid questions
which ultimately are designed to turn a tragedy into a malicious conspiracy?
Regardless of why it happened, when a car bursts into fl ames why is the person inside the car, and their welfare, less important than assigning blame?
Why would we rather dwell on assigning blame or bad mouthing a car manufacturer, rather than simply asking after the person and wishing them well?
And why does everyone have a ghastly story to tell of "someone they knew" who went through the same thing.
Why can people simply not offer a kind word of encouragement or a simple act of compassion to ease the burden of those hanging onto the slightest sign that things will be alright.
How have we become a society which takes more pleasure in adding to someone's burden than easing it or taking pleasure in others' pain?
And more to the point, how do we continue to face our collective image in the mirror, seeing the morbid and cruel society we have become?
Insensitivity is killing the communityDon't forget our charity shop "Scratches" in the

Two Hoërskool Hugenote learners and actor Phillru van Achterbergh accepted roles in the stage production of Fiela se Kind.
For those who don't remember the story line, the production is about Benjamin, a three-year-old blond boy found on Fiela Komoetie's doorstep.
She raised him for nine years until the census committee took notice of Benjamin and claimed he was Lukas van Rooyen, who had disappeared nine years before.
Graigan Swartz (14), a Grade Nine learner from Hoërskool Hugenote, plays the role of Fiela's own child, Tollie Komoetie.
"It is a dream come true and I am overwhelmed," says Graigan.
He believes through perseverance and prayer God answered his prayers.
Divan Prinsloo (15), a Grade 10 learner from Hoërskool Hugenote, says he will focus on the play as well as his homework.
"Playing the role of Willem van Rooyen, Lukas' brother, is defi nitely an exciting challenge," he says.
Both teenagers feel it is a privilege to be part of Frans Swart's team at Lefra Productions.
Their advice to the other children who auditioned and didn't get parts is to never stop trying.
"Believe in your dream," they say.
Ex-Springs resident Phillru van
Achterbergh (26) takes the role of Lukas van Rooyen, who was renamed by Fiela as Benjamin Komoetie.
He is excited about being the "kaalvoet kind" in the play.
Fiela se Kind will be performed at the Springs Theatre in Second Avenue, from Thursday to Saturday at 7pm.
There will also be show at 3pm on Saturday.
Frans says the proceeds of Saturday evening's show will go towards the "Goue Ankers" of the NG Kerk Springs-Oos.

this little girl from her horrifi c life.I think her emotions got the better of her, but she did what she thought best at the time, including kidnapping the girl. This lands her in court, but she manages to adopt the child who she calls Chloe. Her life changes completely when she marries to Anthony, and moves to New Zealand.
I believe children with a traumatic past deserve a second chance, but also need to be handled with care.
Chloe's behaviour is that of an insecure, scared child who suffers from a lot of abuse as well as rejection.Charlotte's promise to Chloe is to love her forever and, coming close to breaking that promise, there is more than one hero in the story. But let me not give too much away as this book is brilliant and a must read.

No need to go big or go home in the property marketIf there’s one area in which the saying “go big or go home” should defi nitely not apply, it’s the residential property market.
Homebuyers should adopt exactly the opposite strategy, of purchasing only as much home as they absolutely need right now, at the best possible
price in the best possible area. It’s never a good idea for property
buyers to stretch themselves to their fi nancial limits to buy a property, and that is especially the case at the moment when consumers are facing ongoing and sizeable hikes in the cost of fuel, food and utilities, not
to mention the possibility of interest rate increases.
Buyers really must leave them-selves some room to manoeuvre if and when these increases materi-alise, or they are very likely to fi nd themselves unable to meet all their fi nancial obligations and at risk of
losing the home they have worked so hard to acquire.
Buyers should be targeting proper-ties at the moment that cost at least 25 per cent less than the maximum bond they would qualify for, a move that also makes it easier to qualify for a home loan.

Budgeting tips for the new homeownerAdvising first-time buyers about home fi nancing is a serious business and should be taken seriously.
Getting pre-qualifi ed enables prospective buyers to focus their home search on those properties they know they can comfortably afford, instead of being tempted to “stretch” themselves fi nancially to buy something too
expensive. It also increases the likelihood of their
offer to purchase being accepted, because the seller is reassured that they are fi nancially capable of buying that particular property.
Meanwhile, home buyers calculating the ongoing costs of home ownership should not forget about the premiums for at least two
types of insurance that will probably be new to them, the fi rst being homeowners insur-ance (HOC), which covers the “bricks and mortar” of the home itself at replacement value that is, the amount it would cost to rebuild should it be completely destroyed, say by fi re or fl ood.
Most homeowners simply allow the
premium for this insurance to be debited to their home loan account, but it is worth not-ing that paying it separately when it falls due could mean a long-term saving of thousands of rand in interest.
In addition, a borrower does not have to buy this insurance from the bank that gives him a home loan, as long as he can prove that
he has enough cover. The lending bank may also insist on the
borrower having what is called “bond insur-ance”, which is actually credit life insurance to cover the outstanding amount of the bond in the event that the borrower dies or is perma-nently disabled but the borrower is also free to obtain this insurance wherever he likes.

Centre needs your helpKwaThema - The people with disabilities at the Kopano Disabled Movement Centre are using their gardening skills and handiwork to sustain the centre and themselves.
The centre was formed 21 years ago to offer support to people in the area who are living with disabilities.
The chairperson of the centre, Sithembiso Mdebele (50), says the centre offers life skills training, handiwork in designing beads as well as crafts and gardening.
“We don’t want people to feel sorry for us because we are physically challenged.
“We have the brains and
intelligence to work like other people.
“We were only born different.”
He adds that they sell some of their produce to the keep the centre running.
Mdebele says that the centre is going through fi nancial diffi culties.
“We currently do not have any funding support and we are forced to depend entirely on the gardens.
“We use the money we make from the sales to buy food and electricity and to provide transport for the members who stay far away.
“Sometimes they are forced to walk the long
distances to the centre when we cannot afford it.
“We also share some with poor households and other centres in the area.
"We are proud that we are also able to feed others through our gardens and would like to keep the programme going,” he says.
Mdebele says they are pleading for the help of business people, the agricultural department and anyone who can assist them with donations for gardening tools, seed and other tools to help keep the centre running.
Anyone who can assist can contact them on 060 3024338.
Isaac Mogaga (21), Themba Sibko (43) and Sithembiso Mdebele (50) working in their gardens.
KwaThema - Residents fear that the long uncut grass on street corners and unoccupied plots is putting their lives in danger.
They allege that the grass in the area has not been cut since last year.
A concerned resident, Alina Motsepe (60), says that they have reported the matter to the council numerous times.
“When we complain at the council offi ces they give us reference numbers and promise to attend to the grass-cutting within a week.
“We have been waiting since last year, hoping that one day they will turn up, but they never do.
“We have lost hope,” she says.
Motsepe says that criminals in the area hide in the grass and rob people of their valuables.
“We fear walking out when it is dark because we don’t know who will be hiding in the long grass.”
“The long grass is now breeding rats, mosquitoes and illegal dumping sites.
“We are unable to sit outside because of the rats and mosquitoes,” she adds.
Another resident, Ezra Tali (65), says that he fears that the long grass at the street corners might cause accidents.
“When approaching the
T-junction, drivers cannot see oncoming vehicles.
“We have to peep right into the road fi rst to see whether there is a car coming before we can drive in or take the curve.
“We are pleading with the municipality to cut the grass and clean the unoccupied plots,” he says.
Ehurhuleni spokesman Themba Gadebe says that it is the responsibility of the owner of the stand to ensure that the stand is properly maintained.
“The notices with time
frames were already served on the owners of the private vacant stands to cut the grass.
“If they fail to cut within a specifi c time frame, a contractor will be appointed by the Ekurhuleni’s Health and Social Development Department to cut the grass and the bill will be issued to the owner,” he says.
Gadebe says grass on the pavements of privately owned stands as well as the grass in parks and on council-owned stands are cut by the council department.
Long grass causes concern
Concerned resident Alina Motsepe stands next to the uncut grass and weeds on an unoccupied stand behind her home.

Although the Comrades Marathon is only taking place on June 4, it is important for runners to prepare themselves well in advance, to ensure they make it across the fi nish line of this year's 86.7km 'up-run'.
To make ensure fi rst-time runners are well informed about the training and nutritional requirements of this race, a free, informative seminar will be held for novice runners.
A panel of experts in the fi elds of medicine, sport psychology and dietetics will be on hand to offer advice and answer your questions.
The Offi cial Comrades Coach will also be there to provide insight to help delegates with information which will support them in training as well as on race day.
The novice seminar is aimed at fi rst-time runners and will be held on Northerns Athletic Club, Benoni Northerns Sport Club, 1 Brodigan Road, Rynfi eld.
The seminar will be held on March 29 and starts at 7pm, entrance is free and no reservations are necessary.

Tommy and Frith enjoy the DusiTwo East Rand Kayak Club members who put in solid performances at the 120km FNB Dusi canoe marathon, held last weekend between Pietermaritzburg and Durban, are Tommy Booth and Frith Cooper.
Springs resident Tommy Booth achieved his goal of moving up fi ve positions.
He was well prepared for the single Dusi (K1), but believes it was a tough and special marathon.
“I wanted to end in the top 100 and am happy to have been able to achieve my goal,” he says.
Tommy believes this was due to his six-month-old daughter, Corinne, and his wife, Izaan, being there to support him.
“I found the fi rst day to be the toughest as, traditionally, there were only four portages but this year there were more due to the low water levels,” says Tommy.
Stage two is the longest and hardest
stage, with a 46km stretch, which Tommy managed comfortably.
Stage three, from Inanda Dam to Blue Lagoon in Durban, is a 36km stretch.
“Since the dam was built about 30 years ago, the water level was at the lowest it has ever been.
With the level only being ankle-deep, there were about 15km portages,” says Tommy.
However, this didn’t deter the young canoeist, as he claims running is one of his stronger points.
"Being placed 100th was quite an achievement," says Tommy.Frith Cooper
Frith and her canoe partner Deon Gerber fi nished 279th in the K2 double canoe.
“This was my second Dusi and I found the water levels adding to the toughness of the marathon,” she says.
"There were long portages where
we had to carry our canoes for about 8km."
On the fi rst day, Frith found the water fl ow to be good, but the second day was quite a challenge.
She says many people dehydrated due to the hot summer temperature of 35° and the water tables running out of water for the paddlers.
“Rapids were non-existent and we still had to carry our canoes for longer periods where there was no water,” she says.
She claims they were warned on day three that the water levels were very low.
“For paddlers to run Burma Hill is like running the Comrades,” she says.
Frith and Deon originally planned on fi nishing day three in four hours, but they eventually managed to fi nish in 8:47:42.85.
"A tough and diffi cult race, but worth every minute," she says.

Audi’s city slicker Q2
www.autodealer.co.zaThousands
of used carsavailable
Hyundai’s baby Tucson, the CretaAs you will see in this issue of Autodealer,
we feature the Audi Q2, a premium compact crossover. To be honest, our market is
flooded with similar offerings ranging from budget-friendly suzuki models to the more premium Mercedes-Benz products.
The Audi Q2, as good as it is, might be a bit costly for some. Well, not to worry because Hyundai has just launched the Creta and seeing as I was already in Cape Town, I went and took it for a drive.→ What is it?For starters, all of Hyundai’s suVs are named
after famous places, mostly cities. Take the sante Fe and Tucson for example. The Creta on the other hand is named after the Greek island Crete. As for the car though, well it’s basically a baby Tucson with the likes of the Ford Ecosport,
Mazda CX-3, suzuki Vitara and Jeep Renegade firmly in its sights. → the looksAt first glance, it looks larger than other compact
crossovers on offer like the Ecosport and Renault Duster. It has a long bonnet with a square, muscular suV stance, an upright grille and decent ground clearance (more than the Tucson actually).
Viewed from the side, you will notice a flowing roof line and a more upright design with familiar Hyundai character lines. The rear is also somewhat attractive with wraparound taillights and a steeply raked rear windscreen. overall, it’s a good looking car which should attract customers. → What about the interior? When I got inside, the first thing I noticed is that,
well, there isn't too much going on. The design of the dashboard is simple, neat and uncluttered. one can expect a large screen mounted in the
> justin jaCobs centre which incorporates all of the infotainment functions, as well as navigation and display for the reverse camera.
Quality plastics have been used throughout the interior and one does not get the sense that anything is cheap. The rear is also fairly spacious and the boot large with a flat floor.→ safetyThe Creta comes with six airbags, ABs, EBD
and other electronic gizmos to keep it going in the right direction. It also features strengthening bars for extra rigidity, and safety and structural features for instance; the entire front end can be replaced as a single unit in case of damage.→ under the bonnetHyundai south Africa has introduced two
engines for the Creta; a 1.6-litre petrol available with a manual or automatic gearbox, and a 1.6-litre turbodiesel which is only available as an automatic. Both engines are definitely up for the job
and feature new technologies which not only aid fuel economy, but power delivery and reliability. The four-cylinder petrol makes 90kW and 154Nm of torque, whereas its turbodiesel sibling punches out 96kW and an impressive 265Nm.→ VerdiCtAfter driving on numerous gravel and tar roads,
the Creta definitely offers an alternative to the numerous options available in the segment. I was impressed with the overall ride quality and the refinement of the diesel model.
The petrol model did seem to struggle to get a move on even at the coast, so taking into account our need for speed up in Johannesburg, it would be the diesel for me.

•adFor most people, cars aren’t really about
the driving experience, they are more about making a fashion statement, facilitating your active lifestyle, keeping you fully connected and most importantly, letting others know that you have made a success of your life. the new Audi Q2 offers all of that and a lot more. → What is it?I’m not quite sure really, but Audi says it fits into
the range between the A3 and Q3, so it offers compact proportions with a sort of sUV appeal thanks to a raised ride height. It looks sporty like the A3 and funkier than the Q3, which should make it very appealing to fashion conscious younger buyers.→ the looksI’ll be honest, it is becoming very difficult to
differentiate many of Audi’s latest models these days. the Q2 however is different. It features a bold, new octagonal grille, a new light design as well as bold character lines down the side.
Another radical design element for a rather conservative brand like Audi, is that the large C-pillar can be optionally finished in silver or dark grey which adds to the design appeal of the car.
At the rear, it also doesn’t look like any other current Audi. Instead, it looks a bit like a VW Polo if I’m honest, however that doesn’t detract from its overall design. It looks good and is certainly different.→ it’s about proportionsAt 4 190 mm in length, it’s closer in size to the
A3 sportback with which it shares its mQB platform. the newcomer is actually slightly wider than the A3, while also riding higher as you’d expect – with 35 mm of added ground clearance.
→ What’s it like inside? As this is an Audi, one thing you can always
count on is that the interior is going to be filled with quality materials all assembled with precision. For the most part this remains true with the Q2, however I did notice some cheap plastics on the lower parts of the doors. Everything in front of you though is top quality.
the design of the interior is very similar to that of the A3 but with some slight differences. For one, I found the dashboard slightly more angled towards the driver and Audi do offer more personalisation options, such as an array of various inlays, stitching and a 10-colour LED mood lighting system .
As for space well, it’s a bit snug at the rear, however, boot space is around 405-litres with the seats up and an impressive 1 050-litres with them down. → techno savvyInside is all about the Virtual Cockpit, Audi’s
impressive 12.3-inch digital instrument display. It not only displays trip and infotainment information, but the navigation as well. If this is still not enough for you then, fear not because Audi has also fitted a retractable dashboard mounted screen so the passenger can also enjoy the technology.
this screen is controlled by Audi’s easy-to-use mmI control pad found on the centre console. Before you get excited however, note that these toys do come at a price so take that in to consideration.→ engines on offerAt the launch, I only got to sample the tried and
tested 110kW/250Nm 1.4 tFsI motor which can be found in many other Audi models. It now features cylinder-deactivation technology which will help improve fuel economy. Buyers have a choice of either a smooth six-speed manual or Audi’s impressive seven-speed s-tronic transmission.
A 1.0 litre three-cylinder tFsI with 85kW and
200Nm will become available in may this year, along with a 2.0 tDI that’s good for 105kW and 350Nm. The latter is fitted as standard with the s-tronic which is optional on the petrol.→ verdictAfter driving on dirt and tar roads, both highway
and twisty back roads, I can report that the Q2 is fun to drive and able to get you to that spot in the country side that a hatchback might struggle.
It has an array of safety features as well as customisable options. the looks might not be to everyone’s tastes and if you want the larger wheels, expect the ride quality to be slightly compromised.

Audi’s city slicker Q2It is however easy to drive and easy to live with.
the price is on the premium side though and some might find it a bit high when compared to its competitors. that said, the Q2 offers good quality and will definitely appeal to those who value a premium badge.

Link between budget cars and road deaths?
Dear Editor
It was once mentioned in this publication that our car culture is very diverse, as we have a mixture of all kinds good and bad. We drive cars considered to be safe in Europe and those not allowed like Renault Kwid, Datsun Go, Fiat Uno, Tata Indigo and Geely to name a few.
If these cars are not safe enough, does this mean they also contribute to our roads death count, which is as we know, is quite high, or are there no statistics to support that? If so, why are these cars allowed to enter our market? If not then there is
no need for European safey standards. To me it also makes no sense that car compa-
nies will produce budget cars which do not put the safety and lives of their intended clientele first. In my opinion, I think all cars must meet at least minimum safety measures to prevent injury and deaths.

unique sa car cuLture wiLL never end
Dear Editor
The opinion piece by Sean Nurse on South Africa’s unique car culture (Autodealer Week 7) was a pleasant read. I agree very much that consumers / automobile owners think more with their hearts than head.
The trend in South Africa has always been to own something that stands out. Stamp your authority or just show off. Or isn’t this a worldwide trend.
The survey on how much owners owe on their cars should be your next article. The culture has two faces; living like the Joneses and being the Jonses.
My highlighted moment of your article was, “I suppose if we take a rational approach to the figures, we can see that there is a massive socio- economic disparity between the citizens of this nation.” I can’t see this culture ever ending as in South Africa we consume, not save but consume as much as we can save. Unique I will say again.

Upgrades that make your car slowerTo see the latest pics and videos go to www.autodealer.co.zalong term update
We’ve all been there before, toying with the idea of upgrading our cars, whether it is something as simple as a set of wheels or as complex as turbocharging your naturally aspirated machine.
The problem in some cases though is that certain modifications or ‘upgrades’ actually hamper performance, make the car heavier on fuel and sometimes, quite dangerous to drive. Here is a list of modifications that I think you should carefully consider before proceeding with.
→ Bigger wheelsI know this because I’ve been there, bigger
wheels are a tempting proposition. These large alloy items can change the entire look of your car, and even make it appear faster. But here’s the thing, unless you have a powerful sportscar, all that large diameter wheels and tyres are going to do is slow you down.
Sure, the handling may be a bit better with proper tyres and wheels, but in non-performance cars, the larger the wheel, the more rolling resistance and in most cases, the heavier the wheel and therefore,
premium fuel whereas the cheaper and more basic vehicles will likely state 93 as the preferred fuel.
→ rear wingsYes, those massive ‘aero wings’ that are
available anywhere from a flea market to proper aftermarket suppliers certainly have their place in motorsport and on certain sports and supercars, but I’m afraid that on your daily ride, it will do nothing but compromise performance.
You see, for a wing to work it needs airflow and therefore high speed. I don’t know about you, but I don’t do 200 km/h down the N1 on my way to work. Besides the speed needed, most vehicles sold in South Africa are front-wheel drive, bar bakkies of course (which can’t really have a wing anyway, right?) and therefore will not benefit from having their rear end pressed down by a rear wing.
If anything you’re effectively lifting up the wheels that you’d want pushed down. In cars like the BMW M4 GTS which is a proper track machine, the adjustable rear wing helps the vehicle in dynamic situations by pressing the rear end down for traction, while a front splitter and rear diffuser are also at work. So think before your Vivo gets that wing.

ask? Well, you see your vehicle comes out of the factory with a shock and spring combination that suit one another. By replacing the spring with an aftermarket item, you’re fitting two parts that don’t complement one another and will therefore prevent your shocks from doing their job properly while also causing more wear and tear.
I recommend looking for a shock and spring combo that will work well together to improve handling handling and give you the look that you desire. If you’re in to adjustability, look at a coilover suspension set-up.
Can you think of any other modifications that either make your car slower or worse off as a result?

→ 95 ron fuel in a 93 ron carI have heard bold statements like “I run my car
on 95, because you know, it’s more expensive and better for your car.” The only thing I have to say to this is that this statement is not entirely correct.
You see, every car is tuned to run on a specific fuel and therefore will run optimally on that fuel. Adding 95 RON to your car which is happy on 93 RON won’t really do anything, meaning it’s a waste of your money.
As the USA’s Federal Trade Commission notes, “In most cases, using a higher-octane gasoline than your owner’s manual recommends offers absolutely no benefit. It won’t make your car perform better, go faster, get better mileage or run cleaner.”
So pay attention to the recommended fuel stated by the manufacturer on the inside of your fuel filler cap. You’ll note that most performance and high-end cars state something like “Min 95 Max 98” meaning that the vehicle is meant to run on our
